Photoshop CS5 Trouble with thumbnails obscured by mask or channel

I can hardly believe there isn't a thread for this already. I've been having this problem since Photoshop 3.0. In the event my current version of Photoshop saved preview thumbnails, and my OS would display them, there would often be portions of the image missing. I noticed that there was usually a mask or channel matching the missing portion, and deduced that Photoshop was arbitrarily masking the preview, making them useless even in the cases where I could see them.
Don't bother responding with "Adobe does not support thumbnails" or something similar. I suspect the only reason Adobe Developers ran into this problem and realized it would drive customers bug nuts. Ignoring it, however, does not prevent it. Other companies have attempted to address the users desire to see and identify their PSD files precisely the same way they can see most other graphic formats in Windows (the only platform I have personal experience with on this issue). It does not help, however, when Photoshop is not able to save a clear and accurate thumbnail, so after finding nothing on this topic online, I'm here to ask if anyone has run into this and found their own work around that does not involve deleting all masks and channels "just in case" one of them randomly spikes the thumbnail. As mentioned, it seems to occur randomly; I have hundreds of tiles with scores of masks and channels that produced clear thumbnails. Perhaps one in twenty graps a random alpha channel and obscures the preview. I'm getting tired of wasting HD space saving a PNG clone with every PSD to save myself the hassel of opening up dozens of PSD files to find the one I need to work on.

I have had similar problems. I use iMac and this problem presents itself such that the thumbnail, as seen in the FINDER, is distorted.
The distortion looks somewhat like a mask has been superimposed on the thumbnail. It has been suggested that there is a problem with the mac os and alpha channels (masks, not the standard 4 channels.) This seemed always to affect only images containing an alpha mask.
This has not happened lately, but older thumbnails that had this problem remain distorted. The images when opened are good, however.
I know you use windows and I believe I have others on windows complain about the problem.
good luck,
vince

  • Using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended with MacBook Pro Retina

I intend to buy the new MacBook Pro with retina display. Does anyone know if I will be able to use Photoshop CS5 Extended with it? I could upgrade to CS6 but it seems an unnecessary cost given that I am still quite happy with CS5.

CS5 does not offer Retina quality display - in fact, it looks awful. The current version of CS6 was updated to work with Retina display models (you'll need to check with Adobe to see what the current version of CS6 is... I know they haven't 'abandoned' it, but I subscribe to CC so I'm on CC 2014).

  • Is Photoshop CS5 compatible with Windows 8?

My computer died and I have to buy a new one which will probably come with Windows 8. Is Photoshop CS5 compatible with Windows 8? I can't seem to find a straight answer.

It is not officially supported as the OS was not available with CS5 was written.  It will work on it however.
From what I have read Win 8 is a step down from Win 7 from a purely operational view.  It also has an annoying problem with the screen blinking with many of the video cards.  So see if you really like the features of Win8 before committing.  Win7 should still be available but you would have to make it a special request.

Currently using Photoshop CS5, but with a replacement computer and upgrade to Yosemite, keep being told I need to install the legacy Java 6. Currently, Photoshop won't even open. I absolutely do not want to subscribe, don't want to mess with the cloud, just want to buy an upgrade to something that will run for a while longer. I don't care about Lightroom, Bridge, Illustrator, etc.; most of those I've deleted over the years. But I do use Photoshop - or would if it would still run. What options do I have?

This is the java you need for photoshop cs5 to work on mac os x 10.10 Yosemite
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US
It's also possible you may have to reinstall photoshop cs5 even after installing the above java, because sometimes the upgrade to mac os x 10.10 messes up the photoshop cs5 installation.
You can download photoshop cs5 from here if you don't already have the install media.

  • Update of photoshop CC - trouble with NVIDIA Quadro 1000M display driver. PS freezes

    Hey guys,
Since today I've got trouble with my PS CC.
I've updated PS CC yesterday 2014-12-12.
I was doing some drawings today and two times PS freezes during switching layers of or selecting a mask.
A message appeared that there was trouble with the display driver an PS switched off the GPU support because of that issue.
Ok, I thought let's update the display driver and so I've done today. I switched to actual NVIDIA display driver version 314.21
I'm working with an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M on a DELL mobile Workstation Precision M4600 with 8 GB RAM.
Now when I start up PS and press alt+k, my 2 displays showing a black screen for 1-2 seconds.
After closing the general setup window again black screen for 1-2 sec and the top menu bar is showing no entries.
When I move the mouse pointer over the bar, the menus appear again. But the bar is like transparent at the parts where no menues are.
When I unlock the window from the screen an put it back fitting to the screen everything looks like normal.
Till today I hadn't any problem with my notebook in that kind of way.
Maybe someone has or had similar problems.
Would be nice if someone can help me.
    thanks

Oh, that sounds very bad. It's not that bad for me. It's not crashing that often at the moment, only black screens at start up or if setting dialog is opened. But I will see tomorrow how often it will crash, during today it crashed 2 times when doing some ridiculous simple actions like switchid to another layer  and the other time when trying to edit an mask layer. I will contact the support chat on monday regarding this issue. Maybe there is a solution or an update soon... I keep may fingers crossed for you.

  • Is Adobe Photoshop CS5 compatible with Mountain Lion?

I'm interested in getting a new laptop but like using Photoshop CS5.  Are there any compatibility issues using CS5 with Mountain Lion?

Generally, users are having no problems with it in ML. Technically, Adobe support CS5.5, 6 and CC in ML, but a lot of folks are running even CS3 in ML.

  • Compatibility of photoshop cs5.1 with yosemite

Is anyone else having an issue opening Adobe Photoshop cs5.1 in Yosemite.  I keep on getting this message and then it quits.
I have had not problems before with it.  I have tried to find any updates or comments on Adobe's website but there is nothing as yet.

You need to reinstall Photoshop CS5 to replace files damaged by the MacOS 10.10 updater.
Adobe is working with Apple to determine all the damaged files and come up with a quicker/easier solution - but reinstalling works for now.

  • Photoshop CS5 compatibility with windows 7 and windows 8

    Hello,
I do not understand the technical side of computers - I just use them for my work as a photographer
I have Photoshop CS5 32 bit installed on my PC with Vista home premium. I am buying a new PC with 64 bit Windows 7 installed, and it also has the option to upgrade for free to Windows 8 pro.
Will my CS5 work on windows 7 and if I take the free upgrade will it work on Windows 8 pro?
Does it matter that CS5 is 32 bit and the new PC will be 64 bit?
I don't want to get the free upgrade if it means my CS5 won't work on it, as I am happy wioth CS5 and do not need to upgrade to CS6 yet.
    Many thanks
    Tog Porter

Photoshop CS5 is a 32/64 bit application, so when you install it on your new system it will install both 32 and 64 bit versions by default.  This will give you compatibility with your 32 bit plug-ins, as well as 64 bit capability to edit large documents.
You may want to avoid the upgrade to Windows 8 at this time.  It's still immature and the drivers (e.g., for ATI video cards) leave something to be desired.  Plus, in general Windows 8 doesn't offer any compelling new features over Windows 7 (and actually removes some very useful one) - unless you really want the silly full-screen Metro/Modern games they offer at their new App Store.
If you DO decide to install the Windows 8 upgrade, I recommend you take whatever steps are necessary to install the new system as a full, virgin installation, rather than trying to upgrade the Windows 7 system you already have installed - and by this I mean you should NOT take the "keep programs and settings" upgrade, but do a Custom installation and install Windows 8 as though on a blank disk.  Operating systems installed as upgrades to prior versions virtually never work right.
In any case, after having run Photoshop on Windows 7 for a while, you'll want to DEactivate your Adobe software before making the transition (you can do this through the Help menu), then reactivate it after you're up on the new system.  This keeps control of your activation/licensing in your hand.
I strongly suggest you read up on Windows 8 before deciding to upgrade.  You'll find a lot of experts agree that it's not an improvement over Windows 7, which is hard to imagine because all prior versions - even Vista - have been improvements over their predecessors.
