Photoshop CS6 PSD losing layers
Hi, my Photoshop CS6 PSDs are getting flattened if opened by any previous versions of Photoshop, depsite not being saved just opened. When I open the original in CS6 again, all layers are merged. Where there were 12 layers, there is now one. This is causing loads of problems. Please advise.
Yes, thank you, Conroy. Now I think of it that was the true basis behind my post above. It wasn't that the Save As PDF operation had flattened the image, it was that it had turned off the option Conroy showed for subsequent operations.
You can reproduce it like this:
1. Open a layered document.
2. Save As - PDF, disable Preserve Editing Capabilities.
3. Save As - PSD, note that the above mentioned checkbox is now OFF.
This is a nasty gotcha, and while the little caution symbol is there it's not that noticeable. Maybe Adobe should draw the red border around it as we have done.

Your description of the issue is not clear:
What format, bit depth and color was your original file "from the net"? It sounds like it was a Color Indexed GIF, which would cause what you are describing.
In the Macintosh Finder, select said "net image" and do a Get Info on it (Command+i). When the Info box appears in the Finder, take a screen shot and upload it here by using the little camera icon in the Reply Editor in the forum's web interface.
If the image is a 256-color GIF, remember the rule: GIGO = garbage in, garbage out. -
Back saving illustrator CC file to CS6 without losing layers?
How can I back save illustrator files created in CC (CS7 version???) to CS6 without losing layers? when I open the files in CS6 it says "some info will be lost' Ha! all layers and separation is lost, so cannot separate parts... whole file seems grouped and cannot be separated???
When I go back to my (other) computer where I was foolish enought to upgrade to CC, I cannot figure a way to save back as I can with InDesign and saving as a idml file. Help!Hi, M

I am on a mac mini with Illustrator CS6 and do not want to load Illustrator CC to it (too many problems)
but have Illustrator CC on my laptop (now at home, not with me) where the files were created on it. I saved the files to a flash to work on my mini while away... but encounter problems if I just open the CC files in CS6.
So... I am trying to explain to my husband (at home with the laptop) how to save the needed files 'back' for me so that they open fully and safely in CS6.... but doing it sort of 'blind' thus I need very specific, step by step instuctions and to explain to him exactly what each box or choice is named.
Sorry it is so hard, but he is not computer literate. Adobe help said to do the following:
click on save as, then click on save, then you get window where at top is an option for a dropdown window and it has a 'default version 17' which then gives another dropdown with options to backward save as CS6 or CS5.
That 'save as' then 'save' seemed strange (to an illustrator and InDesign user) as did the 'default version 17' part.
In CS6 the save as Format box only offers ai, eps, ait, pdf, fxg, svgz, and svg.... nothing that sounds like the .idml of InDesign backsaving.... I as about to call home and try to walk him thru the above, blind... when got your email which sounded more hopeful.
Can you be more specific as to what to look closely at? Thanks so much! -
Photoshop CS6 + psd layers always lose

but not if I open old psd files

In Photoshop CS6, I created two TIFF files each having a different focus on the same subject. The intent is to create a single file using focus stacking with all subject elements in focus. The methods used to import the files as layers and align the layers do not create any artifacts.
The "Auto-blend Layer" function, however, creates permanent artifacts on the layers when creating the masks. The function creates masks for each layer based on its own logic for determining what is best focus. The analysis is fairly good where high contrast exists however it is not 100 percent accurate and is fairly inaccurate in low to medium contrast images. In trying to edit the masks and even when you disable or delete the masks artifacts are left along the margins of the masks on the layer itself. This is a bug. No matter what occurs with the mask the underlying layer should be inviolate - at no time should the underlying layer be affected by a mask until the mask is applied. When the masks are disabled or deleted the remaining layer should not display any evidence of the borders of the mask. Hi, I am new on here so please excuse if this is posted in the wrong area, I have no idea where to post this.
I Have Photoshop CS6 Extended (on Windows 7 - 64bit).
But it does not open my .psd files, only if I run Photoshop CS6 and go File > Open > "and then open the file", it will open, but If I go to the file it self it does not recognize CS6 as the default program or to open it. It tells me it cannot find a program to open the .psd file with. I have tried several times to set the Default Program but it is not even there and if I click on "browse" to find Photoshop and click "open" it does not open or show Photoshop in the Default Programs.
Now I accidently clicked on coreldraw and I don't want my .psd files opening with coreldraw! because I hardly use coreldraw, I only needed it for my studies...
When I had CS5 it worked and opened fine, with CS6 the .psd files just don't find Photoshop.
Can anyone help me please, how can I fix this so that my .psd files get recognized?

Photoshop CS6 automatic shape layers?
In Photoshop CS6, I have Shape Layer B clipped (ctrl alt G) by Shape Layer A. SL-B has a color fill different from SL-A, and has 50% opacity. Is there a way to automatically make every new Shape Layer drawn to have the same transparency and fill color as SH-B, and should also be clipped by SH-A?
When I select SL-A and then draw a new shape layer, it copies the fill color of SL-A and is clipped automatically. When I select SL-B and then draw a new shape layere, the new layer copies SL-B's fill color, but not the transparency, and it is also not clipped.Play with the manipulator keys (shift, ctrl,alt) or use the boolean icon in the top tool bar. This would allow you to add or subtract from the same layer. Making it possible to have more than one shape on the same layer.

Photoshop CS6 creates new layers when cropping
when I crop my image CS6 is now creating a layer. If I check history, there is no sign that a layer was created, just cropped, however if I check under Layer, "Flatten Image" is highlighted. How do i get rid of this, just started today.

Is Layer 0 the only layer you see in Layers panel after you crop the image or is there still a 'Background' layer under Layer 0?
In Photoshop CS6, the Crop tool has been refined. There is an option that enables you 'not' to delete cropped pixels when you crop - meaning your image data is not lost - you can go back to the original version at anytime. With this feature enabled (by default, it is - look in the menu bar on top - 'Delete Cropped Pixels' will be unchecked), your 'Background' layer of the image is simply 'Unlocked', therefore leading to 'rename' of layer as 'Layer 0'.
If you enable 'Delete cropped pixels' option, it will simply get rid of the pixel data that you're cropping out and your layer will remain as 'Background'.

Photoshop CS6 PSDs into After Effects CS5.5
Hi there,
Our graphics department have recently upgrade Photoshop to CS6 version 13.0 x64. I am trying to open a .psd file they have created in After Effects CS5.5 version 10.5.1.2. However I get the following message:
'After Effects error: could not open (.psd name) because it is not a valid Photoshop document. ( 51 :: 19 )'
Is there any way they can save their photoshop files differently so that they will open or do I need to upgrade to After Effects CS6?

(wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the photoshop forum - thought I would try here first though)I've never encountered such an issue, and switch between both versions regularly. On the machine I'm working on right now I have CS6 Creative Cloud installed, but do most of my AE work in CS5 or 5.5 because the clients I'm working for haven't upgarded yet. But all my PSD work is done in CS6.
Is there anything unusual in the file, ie 3D content? As Mylenium says, PS 3D has changed and is no longer supported by AE. Otherwise, are you moving between platforms, ie Windows to Mac? Does the file have a valid PSD extension? -

Today Accidentally my photoshop has closed at that time i am working on my demo template work from last 2 months, so again i open my .psd file thier is error prompt “could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop”.

ThanksHere's a good trick that's works in many cases. You'll be using Fireworks to open, and re-save the Photoshop file. This will fix most corruptions.
Open the corrupt Photoshop file in Fireworks.
Use Fireworks to save it as a .psd Photoshop file. (Important: Do Not save it as a Fireworks file or another extension, because Photoshop may not recognize the layers, or you could lose data.)
Remember to give your file a different name when saving, so you won't overwrite your original. (A good idea would be to create a backup of your original before trying this procedure.)
Open your newly created file in Photoshop.
Remember that many effects will not show in Fireworks, but should show up in the Photoshop layers.

Photoshop cs6 .psd file extension
Hello, if you create an image and it has a .psd file extension. Do you have to download software to view the .psd file extension. Or can if easily be converted to a .jpeg. On my mac I can see the image. At work a windows machine it's asking me to find a program that can view a .psd. I was hoping to convert it to something that will open easily. Thanks!
Here is what I did. I took a picture from the internet and created a new file in photoshop. Then I added some layers for background, and text. Now, the image has 4 layers. It's basically a banner for a title of a page. It has a .psd format. I emailed the photo to myself here at work. I can not open the file. What started this is: If I use this new .psd file I have created and used it in dreamweaver. When someone opens the webpage will that .psd file open for them to see the image? This is why I have been thinking that I need to convert it to a different format. I'm Sorry! I hope this clears up what I am trying to do. Thanks!

Photoshop cs6 psd saved file video display is degraded from original imported file
I have had some 16mm film converted to avi 1900 by 1080 pixels, 72 pixels/inch. Photoshop displays it ok. Then when I save the file as a psd and open it again the quality of the video displayed is deteriorated from the origional. Then no matter how it is rendered, it deteriates further. I am using a windows 7 computer. I have tried this with an Nvidia Quatro 1800 card and an Nvidia Gforce 760 card.
Why does not photoshop at least keep the quality of the video as origional in a psd file? I can understand offering to degrade the display for faster display, but not the rendering degradation. I have tried rendering at H.264 High Quality and DPX full range 8 bit, they both degrade the quality, even though the origional avi file is also 8 bit depth. Rendering degrades the colors considerably.
Where can I get information on what is going on in photoshop 6 as to how to control how it saves a psd file and more control of the rendered color depth?

[email protected]I have to make a lot of color corrections because this is film taken from the early 40s to the early 50s. I tried doing it in Avid Studio, Pinnicle studeo and Corel Draws Video Studeo which is what Avid Studio became. None of them alow for the amount of correction allowed in Photoshop. I already owned Photoshop 5 so I upgraded to 6 to take advantage of its advances in video. The plan was to break the converted files up in smaller peices so that Photoshop could handle it and use Premier Pro perhaps to do other post production editing. The origional avi files are a movie about 1 hr and 15 min long and another one about 45 min long. The CODEX is MJPG in avi.

Photoshop cs6 3D motion: layers missing after render???

I really dont know what is hapening and what i did wrong:
I was having three 3D layers moving ontop of a background. Everything was working fine, although very slow on 8GB macbook pro late 2011. Everything was fine while testing it in the "motion window". Then i started rendering it and the output video file is missing two of the three layers? What is wrong? Additionally, if I now go back to the "motion window", i have the same problem: While playing the file, two layers are missing.
Any Ideas?

Change Color Selecting Layers in PSE10 for a Drawing from Photoshop CS6 (non-photo) .PSD file?

I have a drawing that was created in Photoshop CS6 (non-photo) and saved as a .PSD file. I am able to open the file in PSE10 and see the drawing and select the layers. I am having trouble with figuring out how to change the colors on each layer in PSE10. When I select a layer where do I go to change the color of that layer? Can this be done in PSE10 as this a drawing created in Photoshop CS6 and not a photo?

Here are the steps I have tried.
I made sure the RGB Color (Image>Mode) was selected.
I selected the star layer
Next I selected Layer>Created Clipping Mask
Then I selected Color blend mode
Then I selected Solid Color
When I choose a color the entire canvas fills with the solid color and covers up the drawing.
What step am I missing?
The small red square outline you have next to the orange color box in the color fill layer I am not see this small icon.
