Photoshop Elements Menu Bar Troublehsooting

Hey everyone, first time poster here. I have a question concerning a recurring problem that I'm having with Photoshop Elements 4.0's Menu Bar (File, Edit, etc.) I bought Elements 4.0 new in 2005 and have used it often since without upgrading because it still does what I need it to do for graphic design and photo restoration projects, but often, Elements' Menu Bar will lock up after increasingly shorter sessions of use. I can still use photo editing functions in the fields on the left & right, but the Menu Bar's buttons will flicker and not open when I click on them. When this happens, Elements won't close without Task Manager, and I can't use certain keyboard shortcuts on open projects (i.e. I can copy work suing Ctrl + C but I can't save it in Elements using Ctrl + S.) An unistallation and re-installation does solve the problem at first, but the frozen/flickering Menu Bar does return eventually
I don't want to buy a whole new version of Photoshop if I don't have to, so I was wondering if this was a recurring or fixable problem that I can correct, or is this a sign that I should get Elements 11 or 12? I'm running an HP Touchsmart 300 computer with Windows 7, and it flawlessly runs Elements 4.0 despite it's age aside from the aforementioned problem. This has been a recurring issue for over a year, but only now is it getting to a frequency rate where I can't move around it easily. I can provide other information if it's at all helpful, and thanks for any advance assistance!

First, thank you lundberg2 for moving this to the right forum, I didn't know that Elements had a separate forum.
I did delete the preference file for Elements 4.0, though not the way you gave because the Alt+Ctrl+Shift command didn't work on this version. I did it manually by deleting the Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 Prefs.psp file located in AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Photoshop Elements/4.0/Editor. This did help temporarily, but the problem returned after steady use today on restoring old family photos. Menu Bar buttons still just highlight and flicker, work can't be saved directly, and Elements won't close. I did notice that sometimes, changing the active tool on the left would get the Menu Bar selections open, but not all worked as normal, and the problem returned if I changed tools. Is there another possible fix/remedy that I could try?

Photoshop Elements Menu Bar hidden

I notice with Photoshop Elements that on some installs the full menu of 'File', 'Edit', 'Find', 'View', 'Window' and 'Help' appears at the top of the screen, yet on other installs only a Chevron '>>' appears that you have to click onto to reveal the menu options. How do I set up the program so that the full list of options appears in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen?

Photoshop CS4 - Menu bar background is showing as black

Hi all,
I've been attempting to change the background colour of the menu bar of my photoshop, for some reason instead of being a white background with black text, i have the below.
The machine I am running has:
Photoshop CS4
Win 7 64 Bit
4GB of Ram
Any help would be really be appreciated, thank you for you time,

If you have not set an oddball theme on the desktop (which Photoshop mostly ignores), it could be that you have a video driver glitch.
I think the first thing I'd try is this: Right-click on the open desktop, choose Personalize, then save your current theme. Now select the Windows 7 theme, just to make sure everything's set in a known way.
Does the problem persist?
If so, then it's likely a video driver update will help... Visit the web page of the maker of your video card, locate the latest driver version for your hardware and version of Windows, download, and install.

So I finally made a menubar in photoshop, styled exactly how I want it... but when I brought it over to DW I could not select the text or figure out how to create the links ... help please.
how do you select the text in a photoshop created menu bar to create links?

This is because no links have probably been applied to the menu bar.
You would be better advised to save each individual menu bar item and use these as background images for your menu items. To create links in Dreamweaver see - http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Dreamweaver/9.0/index.html.

Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac Question about Opening Files

Hi. I somehow must have changed some settings in Photoshop Elements and I don't know how to change them back. Whenever I open an image, it opens at a size of 34.5% and the window is sized accordingly. When I change the view to Actual Pixels, the image gets bigger but the window stays the same size as before so I need to manually resize the window. Anyway, I don't know how I accidentally set these settings as the default. I'd like Photoshop Elements to open images at 100% and have the window size be the same. Does anyone know how I can fix it? Thanks.

Elements will open an image at the largest size it can so that the whole image fits in the Active Image Area. It's the same as Fit on Screen view.
You can make the Active Image Area larger by collapsing Panels and the Project Bin.
To get your window to resize with your photo you need to choose a Preference. Go up to the Photoshop Elements menu (Edit menu for Windows users) and choose Preferences > General and click on the box next to Zoom Resizes Windows. Click OK.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12: dropdown boxes for tools not working properly in Win 8.1

Elements 12 system requirements are indicated up to Windows 8. Does that mean it should also work on any Windows 8 upgrades, more specifically 8.1? The drop-down boxes for the tools are not working properly in the program. I've installed it, uninstalled it, and installed it again with the same results. It worked fine on my old computer with Vista.

Yes PSE12 will work on 8.1
If problems persist try re-setting the prefs.
Go to: Edit >> Preferences >> General (Photoshop Elements menu on Mac)
Click the button Reset Preferences on next Launch

IPhoto 6 Problem when editing using Photoshop Elements 3.0

Please can someone help. If I edit a photo in photoshop elements 3.0 from iPhoto and then click the save button I get an option box that requires the quality and save settings. I've selected the best quality but I then have a choice of saving in base standard, base optimised or progressive. If I choose any of these options, when I go back into iPhoto the skin tones etc. have changed (they have a more reddish look about them)on that picture. Please can someone advise me how to save without it altering the colour of my photos. Editing in iPhoto doesn't effect the colour at all.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's not that setting (I use Base Standard) but the fact that PE3 may be adding a color profile to the file that is different to what was there originally. Go to the Photoshop Elements menu and select Color Settings... option. There you can set it to have "No color management". (I'm running PE2 so the menu selections may be different than PE3). Then see if that will make a difference.

Cannot edit in Photoshop Elements

Hi,
I´m running Lightroom 1.3.1 and Elements 6.0 on a Vista machine, and I´m having problems to bring up photos in Elements for editing. I had to modify the registry to enable the Edit in Photoshop elements menu, and now Elements opens up when issue this command.
The problem is no photo shows up in Elements! Elements opens up with an empty window but nothing more happens!

I managed to solve the problem on my own. By mistake, I put a reference to the Elements "container application" (the EXE-file that ends with 6.0) in the registry. For some reason the editor fired up which made me believe everything was OK. I changed this reference in the registry to EXE-file corresponding to the elements editor (this filename _do_not_ end with 6.0) and then everything worked all right.
I think it would be wise to update the technical note on this with a warning!

Photoshop elements 6 menu bar

how do i get the left side of my menu bar in photoshop elements 6, to show the edit, file, view, find, window and help buttons. Only the camera and little house show up. The only thing that shows is a tiny arrow which is barely visible. All was okay the first time I installed to another computer (which has since crashed). The reinstalling of photoshop the second time is causing the above problem.

Menu bar with Photoshop Elements 11

The Menu bar at the top of my iMac will not disapear when I am using Photoshop E 11 and hide the PE11 control buttons. The usual key strokes etc don't work. I have tried uninstalling anr reinstalling but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

From a Photoshop perspective (I do not have PsElements, but only its "big brother"), PNG is a very common format, and Ps CS 6 (and all the way back to about version 5, IIRC), Opens them just fine.
Can you Open those PNG files in say a viewer? I worry that they are corrupt.
Still, in the PsE Forum, you will get great assistance.

Photoshop Elements 8 top Menu bar?

Hi everyone,
I have just bought Photoshop Elements 8 after using PSE5 for about 18 months or so. I am having difficulty in reading the top menu bar where the black text is shown against a very dark grey (dark sea grey in model aeroplane terms). Can any one tell me if it is possible to change the colour/shade of this top menu bar to some more easily visible combination, say something like PSE5, with which I had no problems?

Unfortunately, your only options are that, or the white on black (preferences>general), which is actually less awful for most people (a bit more contrast), but still not good.

Photoshop Elements 7 Missing options on Menu Bar

I recently installed Photoshop 7 on my computer, I have Vista as my operating system.
I noticed that in the "Organize" screen, I am missing "File, Edit, Image, Etc.... options on the left side of the menue bar. I unstalled the program and reinstalled 7 again with the same result. I have looked at all the preferences I could find, but nothing that would alter the viewing of these Options. I have a registered copy of Elements. By not having these options, It is hard to utilize the "Organize Option".

please change your text size to 100 % or less. pse shows problem when the text size is greater than 100 % .

Photoshop Elements 2: Top Of Picture Disappears Under Shortcuts Menu Bar.

I know it's not an eMac problem but I thought this would be the best place to ask!
At one time whenever I opened a photo in PSE2 the top edge of the photo's window was neatly aligned with the bottom of the Shortcuts Menu Bar.
Now whenever I open a picture the top of the picture's window disappears under the menu. If it doesn't disappear the moment it is opened, it does if I try to enlarge it.
This means I cannot move the picture around the monitor or close the picture with the red button at the top.
The only cure I have found is to remove the Shortcuts Menu bar, which is rather inconvenient!
I have fiddled around with the preferences and also turned the "Resize Windows To Fit" setting on and off to no avail.
This never used to happen - so has anyone got a solution?

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!!!!
After a day of intermittent head-banging I have solved it.
The Shortcuts Bar should always be ABOVE the Options Bar.
Although I have used Photoshop a lot, I can go for weeks without looking at it.
Somehow the positions of the Shortcut and Options bars had been switched and I hadn't noticed.
I don't know how because I didn't even realise they could be moved and nobody else uses my computer!
Anyway, now the Shortcuts Bar is on top everything is back to normal.
Hope this is of some help should it happen to anyone else.
