Physical standby is the easiest to setup and administer and supports all datatypes. You can use it for reporting (if it's rarely req'd), except for you would have to cancel the recovery, open the db is a read-only mode, and then put it back in the recovery mode.
Logical standby is a pain, but you can run reports at anytime without canceling recovery. logical does not support certain datatypes, like IOT's, BLOBs, etc.

I am planning to buy a Creative Sound card for my Streo 2. Speakers but don't know which of Creative EXTERNAL solution will sound better and blast my bass when i connect it to my notebook to streo speaker.Which one do you prefer ? Thanks.

If you have a spare PCMCIA slot, check out the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. External solutions, there is the SBLi've 24-bit External.
You might want to check out the Xmod though, it is a new product and seems to fit the bill if you're trying to improve the audio quality from your laptop.

  • PLease help me with the best product to buy, Logic Express, which one?

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.4 with garageband 09. I need a very simple to use editing and mastering program and wondered if the logic express would be best suited to my needs. If so, Then WHICH logic express is the easiest to learn that is compatible with my computer an with garageband 09?
I am not an engineer, so I need something user friendly, and self help along the way. Any suggestions on what to purchase would be great, and money IS a factor. If the logic express program would be best, does it have to be an '09 program?
So, What would be the best program for a beginner who needs good results? It seems with some of what i have read that some of these programs replace the garageband? I like garageband.
    Help?!

I upgraded from GB to LE8 a few months ago and whilst there is a steeper learning curve it is much better, you won't regret it. If you're wanting to just do simple editing then LE 8 & 9 are pretty similar (i picked up LE8 very cheaply on ebay then decided to upgrade to 9 once I'd got my head around it to take advantage of flextime editing & the drum replacer). You'll find all the things you do in GB much easier, quicker, & more effective in Logic once you've learned how to use it. Both 8 or 9 are great for the relative lack of outlay, just depends how much money you want to spend is my advice.

  • If you  own an ipad and mac book air which one do you prefer

I currently own an ipad and was wondering if i should perhaps buy a macbook Air to sort of "replace" my ipad. My question is, is the macbook Air better than the ipad?

I'm going to be getting an iPad soon, which I will have in addition to my MBA. Why do I want an iPad when I've got an MBA? Because I love to read and an iPad is better for reading books and magazines. I'm sure I'll also find a lot of other apps doing things that I couldn't do on an MBA (the Air does not, after all, have a touch screen and a touchpad is not at all the same). My sister-in-law uses her iPad to fingerpaint. And the iPad is way more useful on a car ride for watching movies, listening to music, playing games, checking maps. It is very useful to not have to flip open a lid and balance two halves of a device on one's knee rather than one.
BUT...I'm a writer. I type pretty much every day and for long hours during that day. As a touch typist, I need to feel those keys. I can't work on flat glass staring at the keyboard. An iPad is fine for short e-mails or notes, but for writing essays, blogs, novels? I think not. I could, of course, have gotten the keyboard that goes with the iPad. I know a writer who did that and uses only the iPad. But that doesn't work for me. I love my MBA for writing and web-creation. However, when I'm sitting at lunch, I don't like pulling out my computer to read. I like the idea of an iPad that takes up very little room, and can be adjusted to any angle, and which flips the page with a tap in the corner.
Which is better? Which ever one does what you most need it to do. If I didn't write, if I was only a reader or an artist, I'd have only an iPad. But I do write, and so I have an MBA. What do you do and what do you most need your "computer" to do? That's the question you have to answer before we can advise you.

  • Icondom or invisble shield  Which one do you prefer?

    Hi,
it will be nice if those who try both, could give their opinion here,
    thanks

May not be guaranteed but they will be...
I had the option of either and must say I am glad with my choice N95.
The fact it has the expandible memory (I have already heard of several crashes on the 8GB version and they have lost everything).
With the latest FW version, the battery has dramatically improved (I get more than one day use with a lot of usage on the phone). That includes sat nav, wifi, bluetooth, calls, texts etc.
The phone feels better to me (and my friends that have the 8GB version and now regret it).
Looks is a matter of opinion but I feel the 8GB version looks cheap.
My friends have commented on the slider feeling more solid on my phone than theirs.
The lens cover IS an advantage - you may be able to blow dust of, but what about scratches?
    just my 2 pennies worth
The best way to get a quick response is to use the boards. Please do not be offended if I don't answer emails immediately.

  • Which one do you prefer?

The profile that is automatically profiled with X-Rite 24 Colorchecker chart, or any of your camera vendor's? What I have learned after reading a couple of books, and searching through several internet forums is that I need the colorchecker chart to calibrate MY OWN camera. I just want to make sure that it will give me better result than my Nikon D300 camera profiles before I spend $75.00. Has anyone compared the results?

    Thanks for your comment, Ramon.
I thought Camera manufacturers finally decided to open up their encrypted color profiles so that Adobe could have them in ACR. Was I wrong? Was it Adobe who made all the camera profiles like Nikon's Vivid, Neutral, Canon's Faithful, and so on, accessible in ACR? That's a really outstanding job.
The default ACR 4.4, Adobe Standard color profiles for my own D300 have too strong red so I'm now using Nikon's Picture Control Profiles in ACR.
They give my raw images nice color(more than reality) which was made by the professionals in Nikon whose job is making color profiles. They just look better than what I made (without colorchecker) by adjusting HSL panel based on ACR 4.4 profile, as an amateur photographer.
But, they not only have exact same color of Nikon Picture Controls, but also their problems. For example, the transition between clipped highlight and midtone is posterized. And moving recovery slider to the right shifts the color significantly. Of course, default ACR 4.4 profile doesn't have these problems.
I'm trying to escape from those problems by calibrating my D300 and building my own profile. I already ordered it. :)

  • Encrypt sensitive passwords in shell script - Which one do you prefer ?

    Hi ,
I am looking for various options to encrypt a sensitive password in a unix shell script. After a bit of googling, I learned about 'shc'.
Can you please advice on what things you use for this purpose, if any ?
    My requirement / idea is
A .sql file will have to be executed by a shell script in SQLPLUS as USER/XXXX . The .sql file will be prepared by developer and will be put to a directory to which their osuser - say 'user1' will have write access. I will have 'oracle' user in the server , who is the DBA user. I want them to run this SQL like, runthis.sh test.sql where runthis.sh is owned by oracle user and will reside in some directory owned by DBA user. I am planning to configure schema password (USER/XXXX) in runthis.sh , which a developer is not supposed to know.
But if I give execute permission for 'user1' to runthis.sh, it becomes readable and all can read the password. Is there anyway , I can store encrypted password in SQLPLUS connect string in this file / encrypt shell script as such ?
    Thanks in Advance.
    With Regards,

The Oracle account should be identical to the O/S account, and set up as 'externally identified'
But heck, why I am explaining it when it is all on your doorstep, accessible 7 x 24 hrs, at http://tahiti.oracle.com

  • Physical standby database fail-over

    Hi,
I am working on Oracle 10.2.0.3 on Solaris SPARC 64-bit.
I have a Dataguard configuration with a single Physical standby database that uses real time application. We had a major application upgrade yesterday and before the start of upgrade, we cancelled the media recovery and disabled the log_archive_dest_n so that it doesn't ship the archive logs to standby site. We left the dataguard configuration in this mode incase of a rollback.
    Primary:
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2='DEFER';
    alter system switch logfile;
    Standby:
alter database recover managed standby database cancel;Due to application upgrade induced problems we had to failover to the physical standby, which was not in sync with primary from yesterday. I used the following method to fail-over since i do not want to apply any redo from yesterday.
    Standby:
    alter database activate physical standby database;
    alter database open;
    shutdown immediate;
startupSo, after this step, the database was a stand alone database, which doesn't have any standby databases yet (but it still has log_archive_config parameter set and log_archive_dest_n parameters set but i have 'DEFER' the log_archive_dest_n pointing to the old primary). I have even changed the "archive log deletion policy to NONE"
RMAN> configure archivelog deletion policy to none; After the fail-over was completed, the log sequence started from Sequence 1. We cleared the FRA to make space for the new archive logs and started off a FULL database backup (backup incremental level 0 database plus archivelog delete input). The backup succeded but we got these alerts in the backup log that RMAN cannot delete the archivelogs.
RMAN-08137: WARNING: archive log not deleted as it is still neededMy question here is
    1) Even though i have disabled the log_archive_dest_n parameters, why is RMAN not able to delete the archivelogs after backup when there is no standby database for this failed-over database?
    2) Are all the old backups marked unusable after a fail-over is performed?
FYI... flashback database was not used in this case as it did not server our purpose.
Any information or documentation links would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Harris.

    Thanks for the reply.
The FINISH FORCE works in some cases but if there is an archive gap (though it didn't report in our case), it might not work some times (DOCID: 846087.1). So, we followed the Switch-over & Fail-Over best practices where it mentioned about this "ACTIVE PHYSICAL STANDBY" for a fail-over if you intend not to apply any archivelogs. The process we followed is the Right one.
Anyhow, we got the issue resolved. Below is the resolution path.
    1) Even though if you DEFER the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_N parameter's on the primary, there are some situations where the Primary database in a dataguard configuration where it will not delete the archive logs due to some SCN issues. This issue may or may not arise in all fail-over scenarios. If it does, then do the following checks
Follow DOCID: 803635.1, which talks about a PLSQL procedure to check for problematic SCN's in a dataguard configuration even though the physical standby databases are no available (i.e., if the dataguard parameters are set, log_archive_config, log_archive_dest_n='SERVICE=..." still set and even though corresponding LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_N parameters are DEFERRED).
If this procedure returns any rows, then the primary database is not able to delete the archivelogs because it is still thinking there is a standby database and trying to save the archive logs because of the SCN conflict.
So, the best thing to do is, remove the DG related parameters from the spfile (log_archive_config, log_archive_dest_n parameters).
After i made these changes, i ran a test backup using "backup archivelog all delete input", the archive logs got deleted after backup without any issues.
    Thanks,
    Harris.

  • How to Flashback Primary with Physical Standby

We have a dataguard configuration with one physical standby (which is the FSFO). We had an application cause problems in the primary database (basically what would be considered a user error) and we would like to flashback the primary database without having to drop and re-create the physical standby.
Does anyone have a basic set of procedures for doing this?
We are running 10.2.0.3 on windows 2003 server sp2
    Thanks!

We have flashback turned on in both the primary and standby. We want to flashback the primary (and subsequently the standby) to some previous point in time.
In a regular non-data guard setup we would just shutdown and startup mount and issue the flashback database to timestamp (sysdate-1). But with dataguard it's a little more complicated because if we shutdown the primary then the observer will initiate a failover which we don't want. And when we startup mount and flashback the primary, how do we flashback the standby? manually or do we re-start the broker and let data guard do it?
I think it's going to require some specific steps and I was hoping someone had gone through this and could offer some suggestions.

  • Redologs in physical standby database

The MRP process is started and the standby database is physical standby, which is running under managed standby. My Question is as below
    1. Under managed recovery mode do we require the redo logs created on the physical standby database.
    2. How does oracle keep the database in sync when there are no redo logs are created on the standby database.

  • Physical standby error

    Hi friends,
I configured a physical standby database for my primary database. I am able to switchover successfully to physical standby database. So the roles are now changed. Primary is physucal standby, and physical standby is primary.
Now when Iam switching back (now primary to physical standby), there is error at the physical standby which states media recovery needed. I have checked the archives are present at this location. I tried to recover....but thats not working.
Both the databases are 10.2.0.1.0 on windows platform.
    Any comments??

  • Which one do you use?

I recently started asking myself which stability and stress program to use.
Theyre many, but i usually chose between those 3:
1.Stress prime 2004 by Johnny Lee
2.Super Pi by the japanese record breaking guys
3.the well known prime95 (which i dont like to use to test my machines).
prime 95 lacks information and details IMO but is reliable(at least thats what people say), and many people dont know how to use it at first sight(including me), asking themself what is s11t this for?
super pi does not take much time to complete the 32million task, so im not sure about its reliability.
and finally the one that i think is the best is the stress prime 2004 which i like the most, and the funcitons are there and it shows everything in details. the source is taken from prime95 but redone to give better results and details.
so c'mon you o/cers, which one do you prefer ? maybe you can suggest another good one from the rest which you find interesting and reliable!!
and pls no everest or sandra stress test suggestions.
    good day

    I use the following:  http://www.7byte.com/index.php?page=hotcpu
Hot CPU pro is available in an evaluation version that doesn't perform all the tests but still has an accurate diagnostic and burn in mode.
I licensed for the full features and find it works fantastic.   Pressing the diagnostic performs tests of the chipset, cpu, memory, hard drive and more for 6 hours and then tells me the result.   Or I can run Burn in and test it much more extensively.
LOL .. we had quite a discussion a few years back about this .
    Here's a post thats quite amusing :  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=63480.0
I have experienced full so called "prime stable" test over 8 hours just having HotCpuTest fail as it just doesn't do prime numbers calculations or Pi calculations but some more and it's one of the best progs to get you down to earth when you thought your system was overclocked stable.
In addition back then there was some faults in prime95 build x.xx (don't remember) with certain setup with A64 page file size and amount of memory.
Was like talkin' to certain stoneheads back then .
Read the thread through and see why not only trust one cpu calculation/benchmark prog  :D

  • Which one first? GRC or IDM

Guys, if you have to choose between one of the two, GRC or IDM.
Which one would you prefer and why?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. GRC and IdM serve different purposes even though it seems that they both do lots of common stuff. In fact, GRC is complimentary to IdM and vice versa.
If staying SOX compliant is very important for your company than GRC would be the way to go. If you just want to manager users and roles to different ERP systems, legacy systems, LDAP etc. than IdM should be the choice.

  • Canon EOS-1D X vs. EOS-5D MK III - Which camera do you prefer ?

Canon has two excellent full frame cameras occupying their higher end of the DSLR market. They are the EOS-1D X and the EOS-5D MK III. I have been using Canon equipment for about 25 years now and started with the EOS-1 series when it first came out in 1989 and the EOS-5 series when it first appeared on the market in 2005.
I am a Wildlife and Travel photographer and have used both cameras extensively out in the field. The two questions I get asked the most are, which is a better camera and which one do you prefer? My answers are always the same two questions, what type of photography are you shooting and how much do you want to spend? This analysis will not have photos, charts and graphs and assumes the reader is already familiar with Canon equipment. It will get straight to the point on my opinion of the two cameras from the viewpoint of a photographer out on photo shoots.
First, let us compare the major specs of the two cameras, EOS-1D X vs. EOS-5D MK III :
Sensor Resolution :  18.1 MP  vs.  22.3 MP
    ISO Sensitivity :  100 - 204800  vs. 100 - 102400
Processors :  Dual DIGIC 5+ and 1 DIGIC 4  vs.  One DIGIC 5+
Recording Media :  Two CF slots  vs.  One CF and One SD slot
    Viewfinder :  0.76X  vs.  0.71X
Burst Rate :  14 fps  vs.  6 fps
    Autofocus :  61-AF points  vs.  61-AF points
    Cycle Count :  400,000  vs.  150,000
    DxOMark Sensor Score :  Overall - 82  vs.  81
Low Light Performance :  2786 ISO  vs.  2293 ISO
    Weight and Dimension :  6.2 x 6.4 x 3.3 @ 3.37 lbs  vs.  6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 @ 2.1 lbs.
    List price :  $6,799  vs.  $3,499
Both cameras are excellent performers out in the field. The 1D X is completely weather sealed and can stand up to most conditions. AF is lighting fast and high ISO performance are superb and as you can see from the specifications above, they are almost evenly matched in performance but the EOS-1D X edges out the EOS-5D MK III in Sensor Score, Low Light Performance, burst rate and cycle count, while the 5D MK III has an edge in pixel count. So, going back to the original questions posed to me :
    Q : Which is a better camera ?
A : They are both great cameras in their own right. If you are primarily a Wildlife photographer, the obvious choice is the EOS-1D X. It comes through for me under extreme conditions with little fuss and stands up to harsh use but if you are into Portrait and Landscape photography, the higher megapixel count in the 5D MK III will allow a slightly more robust cropping and lends itself to very big photo prints.
Q : Which camera do you prefer ?
A : If I were strictly a Landscape or Portrait photographer, I will pick the EOS-5D MK III. A photographer shooting both Wildlife and Landscape/Travel will do better with the EOS-1D X.
Q : Which camera is the better value (price dependent) ?
A : Without a doubt, I have picked the EOS-5D MK III as the best value in full frame DSLR camera on the market today.
    Q : Which is a better camera, overall ?
A : Without another doubt, the EOS-1D X excels in all categories but at a price some may not want to, or cannot afford. Good, used ones will appear on the market eventually.
Q : Which camera would you buy (price dependent) ?
A : The Canon EOS-1D X represents the pinnacle of Canon's camera technology. There is really no substitute to shoot with the latest 1D. The performance, feel and ruggedness of the camera exudes confidence. I have not bought the EOS-5D MK III because I still own the original 5D and I have the EOS-1Ds MK III as well. So, there is little room in my equipment bag for another full frame camera but the price of the 5D MK III is now down to $2,600 on eBay (limited quantity) and is tempting me by the day.

I went through the same drill - came down to $3300 extra for 14 vs 6 fps.  I bought the 5DIII.
