Picture auto-rotation on import into LR3 ?

Hello !
When importing directly from a card into LR3, vertical pictures are displayed correctly in the library, but JPEGs are not rotated in the file system.
That's not too much of an issue if you edit with CS5, or export the pictures. In those cases they are handled appropriately.
However if you edit with something else (in my case Topaz's filters via Topaz Fusion Express), the pictures aren't rotated appropriately.
Context: W7x64, LR3, Cameras (EOS5D, G10) set to Auto-rotate "on"
Any idea about how to fix this?
Many thanks!
Jean-Paul

Ok - bear with me...
Workflow1: import pictures from camera, with Canon EOS Utility or Canon CameraWindow. Both of them activate ZoomBrowser.
Result: jpegs and raws stored in the file system.
View with Windows explorer, all thumbnails have correct orientation.
Edit with CS5 orientation is correct.
Workflow2: import pictures from card, with Adobe LR3.
Result: jpegs and raws stored in file system.
View with Windows explorer, vertical photos are not displayed correctly (not rotated).
View in LR3 library, orientation is correct.
Edit in CS5 (called from LR3) orientation is correct.
Edit in Topaz Fusion Express (called from LR3) orientation is not correct.
I moved from 1 to 2 because of Canon's inability to provide a driver for W7x64, and, more importantly, because of the workflow improvement with LR3. The incorrect orientation is of course not a showstopper, but an annoyance...
Thanks
Jean-Paul

  • Make XFCE4 desktop picture auto-rotate

I have a friend that would like to have his XFCE4 desktop picture auto-rotate based on updated images from a website.  It's this one specifically ...

Can I do this with a script?  An app?  If I wget the picture every 5 or 10 minutes and set it as the background, that would work perfect, but I don't know where to start.  Maybe there's an option in feh?  Just thinking at this point ... what should I do?

You could use wget as a crontab job, replacing the same file and restarting feh to refresh the background.
I'm sketching the codes here, but does the image name changes when the image does? Right now it's "ALWV.JPG", but will it change along with the new image?
[EDIT] Sorry, I didn't see the XFCE part. So you don't have to use feh to manage your background, thus making life easier.
    Here it is:
    Execute this once:
    wget http://www.goes.noaa.gov/GIFS/ALWV.JPG
Now you have a ALWV.JPG somewhere in your home directory (probably). Find it and set it as the default XFCE4 background image through the common configuration programs. Do not change the file name.
    Run this with bash:
    crontab -e
This will take you to the crontab file. Append this line:
    */10 * * * * wget -m -nd http://www.goes.noaa.gov/GIFS/ALWV.JPG & killall -USR1 xfdesktop
And change the 10 to whatever time you want. Save and exit.
Now, every 10 minutes, crontab will fetch the image and restart the XFCE wallpaper program, making it reload the new one.
The "-m -nd" options state that the program will compare image timestamps, download if newer and overwrite the old file.
If any problem occurs, please report. I couldn't test it here.

  • Different colors after imported into LR3

I really i do not know what is this problem related to, but after I imported pitures into lightroom , it makae some modification and change the color of the picture.
    Here are the examples:
The picture rendered by CDPP, looks as i wanted the picture to look like (also looks like this in the camera), while the one in LR modified the color, I have check the setting in the importer and i do not apply any preset. What am i am doing wrong? or there is a known problem in LR? Note: the render preview option is minimal.
The other issue i have. is when i shoot a picture with a high iso it ended up in LR with a red color. if needed i can post some exmaples as well.
    Thanks for the help.

    Helena,
    You're right.
    @Cafu_co,
Lightroom won't automatically match your camera settings, and it never will.
What you can do is to edit a file in Lightroom so it approximates the starting point that you'd like to have, and then make that the default change to the image that you're presented with after importing. You set the default in the Develop Module: hold down the Alt/Opt key and the button on the lower right of the window changes to Set Defaults... Press it.
One of the things that you'll want to investigate during that process is the Profile setting in the Camera Calibration panel. Most Canon models have profiles available that mimic your picture styles that can be set in the camera.

  • HT201302 Why do my pictures sync sideways when importing into my computer

When Importing my Pictures to my PC why do they come in sideways.

Because the software you're using to view the pictures on the PC is not reading the file/metadata information on the picture to put it in proper orientation.

  • Raw & Jpeg import into LR3.3

    Hi,
Just upgraded to LR3.3; I can now import RAW files from my Sony A33.  I shot the images using the RAW & JPEG setting.  The import was sucessful and the file extensions on the image shows ARW & JPEG.  My question is, how can I access the images separately; the RAW and the JPEG.  In IPhoto the images show up separately.  I'm a newbie to LR; any help appreciated.

If you have "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" checked in your preferences, LR will import ARW and JPEG completely seperately and you can access (and work on) both of them. But there won't be any automatic synchronization of metadata and such.
If you have this option not checked, the JPEGs are only imported as so called "Sidecar Files", which you cannot look at or access for development.

  • Photos import into LR3 super contrasty, orange and with a Vignette

My husband wiped off our wireless keyboard while LR3 was open, a bunch of settings windows popped up and now when I import photos they look ok and then when I click on them in develope mode they load and turn super dark, contrasty, orange and with a dark vignette (without touching any settings) Now, LR3 has always colour corrected a slight amount but this is  extreme...can anyone help me out?

    Interesting:
What do you have checked on this screen?
What is the position of this switch?

  • Auto-rotate images on import, AP 2.0

Since I upgraded to version 2.0 images are no longer auto-rotated on import and I can find no way of switching this function on. It worked fine with all previous versions. I am importing RAW files directly from my D200. Anyone else having this problem?
    Andy.

Same here. My KM 7D files used to rotate on import with v1.5.x, but not with v2. I hope this is just a temporary glitch because I REALLY liked that feature. Picking through 400 thumbnails to rotate the images before importing is a pain.
(Just a tip: Until Apple fixes this issue, it's best to rotate your photos while still in the import screen. Aperture hasn't yet begun to create previews or thumbnails for these images and it will save a little time if your computer can start creating these things with the correct orientation from the beginning.
If you wait until after you've imported the photos, Aperture has already begun processing and you'll have to fight for CPU time while you sort through the images looking for shots to rotate.)

  • Disable Auto-Rotation in OCR Process (Acrobat 9 Pro)

Is there a way to disable the auto-rotation step as part of the OCR process? I have documents which I assemble in from images of tables. (If I had acces to the text of the tables, I wouldn't be using images of them). I place each screenshot in the correct orientation, but when I have Acrobat 9 Pro OCR the document, it auto-rotates many pages into the wrong orientation (some 90° clockwise; others 90° counterclockwise and some 180°). Since Acrobat is horribly confused by what it is seeing, I need to disable the auto-rotation part of the process so that it will OCR what it finds exactly as it finds it.

Very likely the pages of interest have a least one character of renderable text. This might not be readily seen by you or me but it'd be there.
Acrobat's OCR will not process a page that has any renderable text.

  • Where can I find my photos I've imported into iPhoto in Finder

Can anyone tell me where to find the physical location of my pictures that I've imported into iPhoto?

I've backed up my MacBook with Time Machine because I've just purchased a new MacBook Air. Since I have less hard drive space I wanted to transfer only some of the pictures.
    Be very careful now.
Time Machine is a rolling back up. It's not an archive. If you restore only part of the Library then eventually the remainder of the Library will be deleted.
To do what you want you'll need an external Hard Drive not used for Time Machine.
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager
As to the location of the Photos:
By default, your photos are stored in the  iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that +looks+ like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside?  Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning:  Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • How come auto-rotate sometimes works, and then stops working until i reboot?

I am going to be as specific as possible simply because some people seem to have similar problems, but mostly they just can't get it to rotate. I have a 6, and for whatever reason it is finicky with auto rotating after going into an app. Say i am in messages in portrait mode and i exit in portrait mode. When i go back in in landscape mode it won't rotate without me first putting the phone into portrait, allowing the gyro (or whatever controls this) to reset, and then rotating it back to landscape. However, if i reboot the phone, it will work without issue for a short while, automatically detecting which mode it's in and adjusting itself accordingly, until it stops working again. This happens with most pre-installed apps like Messages, Safari, and Mail. Any help would be appreciated. I also get freeze ups from time to time while typing, where the screen isn't responsive at all after switching modes, so i have to rotate, and then back again to get the keyboard to accept entries.

The issue turned out to be the mouse.  It was somehow shorting the USB ports.  I tried a different mouse from restart rather than only after the problem began.

  • Article - creating complimentary colour groups / colour matching images imported into Illustrator?

    greetings all.
i have a number of pictures that i have imported into illustrator.
some are live traced vector images
    some are bitmaps from photoshop
here is my question. i want to take an image and create a swatch from the range of colours expressed in the image. alternatively i'd like a workflow that allows me to match complimentary colours to what is already there.
i am pretty sure that it can be done via a live trace but often it doesnt give me all the colours i would like to use?
are there any other ways in illustrator, 3 rd party programs or other recommendations that you recommend?
    thank you kindly

  • Auto-rotating portrait pictures in iPhoto Library

I'm using iPhoto 6.0.5 (316) and when I started importing photos from my old Windows PC, all of my portrait shots were auto-rotated in the library which is awesome. But I just noticed that the last several rolls I've imported aren't doing that. All the images are from the same camera so I'm not quite sure what I did (if anything) to cause the difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The orientation tag is part of the image files EXIF data recorded by your camera when the picture is taken. If iPhoto sees the orientation tag it rotates the image for you.
Unfortunately, there are lots of things you can do to inadvertently strip an image file of the EXIF data. For example, early versions of iPhoto would export photos with most of the EXIF data removed, at least the makernotes portions.
Did you open or view the photos that didn't rotate in any software that you didn't use with the others? If so, that may be what happened.

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

See my response to your other post.

  • How to auto rotate Images on Full Screen Slideshow if pictures were taken mixed Portrait and Landsca

In Muse: How to auto rotate Images on Full Screen Slideshow if pictures were taken mixed Portrait and Landscape

There is no way that Muse would automatically rotate the images. What you can instruct Muse to do is whether you want to show all image content and leave blank space in either direction OR scale the image to fill the frame resulting in some cropping, but filling the otherwise blank space.
The options are Fit Content Proportionally and Fill Frame Proportionally respectively.

  • Import Bridge CS4 metadata into LR3?

Is it possible to import metadata into LR3 that I've created in Bridge CS4?
Another thread here said it's possible, but there was no explanation on how to proceed.

    Yes it is possible.
The "metadata shuttle" between Bridge and Lr is the XMP-file.
( As an aside: Strictly speaking LR writes metadata to xmp-file (side-car file) only in the case of Raw images, whereas in the case of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs the metadata is written into the header of the file. I suspect that this is the same in Bridge. But in >Catalog Settings >Metadata tab the term "XMP" is used indiscriminately.)
To import the metadata that was created in Bridge in Lr, do a <Read metadata from file> via >Metadata >Read Metadata from file (in the Library Module), or >Photo >Read metadata from file (in the Develop Module).
Please be aware that by < read metadata from file> the complete set of metadata will be imported, including any develop steps you might have done in Bridge, and this will overwrite all metadata already done in Lr (including develop edits which are also metadata). I believe this will even be so in case you have done no develop steps in Bridge, i.e. any develop steps done in Lr will be overwritten with "0". <Read metadata from file> cannot be undone, and there will be a warning to that effect. A selective reading of metadata (for instance keywords only) is not possible.
So you have to import the metadata from Bridge as a first step right after importing the photo in Lr, and before you do anything in Lr.
The "metadata shuttle" works also from Lr to Bridge if you <Write metadata to file>.
Color labels will be imported correctly only if the textual descriptions for the individual labels are identical in Bridge and in Lr.
