Pixelated text on ipad retina

Hello,
I have an iPad2 and an iPad with Retina display for testing my folios. I've just created a folio in horizontal format with the settings 1024x768 pixels as this is the only horizontal iPad format you can select in Indesign (as far as I know). Now I'm checking my folio and on the iPad2 it looks fine but on the iPad Retina the text is pixelated. Help :-(

Create a new folio and use the PDF format for the articles. If this makes no
sense to you I invite you to watch my new lynda.com course.

  • Pixelated text on iPad

Hi. After the last update of indesign fonts in my apps is very unclear/pixelated for quite a while before they becomes sharp. Swiping back and fourth makes the font become unsharp/pixelated again... This is most disturbing with text in scrollable containers.  Do you have any solutions for this?

    Preferences has been reset :-)
The same thing appears also on my android phone.
    Kind regards
    Geir

    Hello,
I do not know if it's the same as with me, but last year I was feeling quite similar to the representation of texts.
The solution was to upload the format for a Retina display. You have to note that the pixel format is 2048x1536
from generation iPad 3. If you load it in this size on your Adobe Viewer, the text appears sharp.
    best regards, Lil.

  • Question about Apple's new iPad retina requirement.

Apple recently made it a requirement that apps support all retina displays for both iPads and iPhones.
What acceptable options are available in AIR for supporting the iPad Retina display and still meet Apple's new requirement?
    Here's my situation :
I've been working on a universal app using AIR 3.6 that works well in all iOS resolutions other than for iPad retina (2048x1536).
When building native support for the iPad retina resolution, the app performance is very poor (due to having to animate and manipulate such large bitmaps). The coding approaches that I've used are supposed to be good on performance, so I doubt that I can optimize things to the point where the performance would be acceptable using the larger art assets.
In comparison, when I use an older version of AIR (3.2) and let the iOS compatibility mode automatically scale up the app to fill the 2048x1536 screen, the performace of the app is just fine (and looks almost identical).
Would using this type of approach cause an app to be rejected by Apple now?
It appears that AIR 3.6 added the ability to restrict just the the iPad high resolution (without restricting iPhones ) using :
    <requestedDisplayResolution excludeDevices="iPad3">high</requestedDisplayResolution>
It seems that this would solve my performance issue, but I'm not sure if Apple's new "retina support requirement" would result in my AIR app being rejected if I used this approach to disable iPad Retina support.
Does anyone know if Apple will now accept an app that was built with iPad retina support disabled through this approach?
Another option that I've tried that may be a workable solution is :
During launch when 2048x1536 resolution is detected, the app loads all of the 1024x768 art assets instead and then scales up the app by a factor of two (using scaleX = scaleY = 2).
The above seems to generate acceptable performance. The artworks looks a little blurrier and less crisp using this approach due to the scaling, but is acceptable to me personally. As this is technically using "standard" resolution art assets and scaling them up, would taking this approach get rejected by Apple?
I'm open to any other options/approaches/suggestions to adding iPad retina support that would allow me to address the performance issues on iPad retina and still allow my app to get approved by Apple. I'm just a little bit confused on what constitutes an app having "iPad Retina" support. Does the app just need to be compiled with a newer version of the iOS SDK to get through the approval process, or does this mean something else?
    Thanks.

Seems like you have two options, if you are already scaling stuff down after launching at a higher res why not make it an option. Have a setting for "High Resolution" and one for "High Performance" the difference would is one would run in Retina mode and one would run in standard mode so users with iPad4 and iPhone5 could probably use the High Res but iphone 4 users can switch to the High Performance setting.
The way I have dealt with it is design everything to a 1024 width and 640 height, this is standard Kindle Fire resolution but almost all devices crop the app in a way where all the key features fit on screen, I just had an app approved 2 days ago by Apple using this technique so basically I am running 1024 graphics on the retina screen, they look great (we are only humans and we can't make out every pixel despite what Apple thinks) and the performance is nice as well. I think they worry about apps being stretched for some reason when apple ups a 1024 app to a retina width using their software it looks horrible but if it is done by the developer it looks great. Download a non retina app and try it on a retina iPad or export your app for Standard resolution and check it out vs exporting for high.
I think you will be fine either way.

  • GPU Mode crash when using 1024x1024px images on iPad Retina with cacheAsBitmapMatrix

So I am building a menu for a mobile app and I have created a sliding menu with tiles, I have done this before, all works great normally.
This time, my tiles were really close to the power of 2 ( 1024x1024px ) so I decided to use that size and resize my tiles to that for performance gains.
    So the setup is this:
GPU Mode active, 7 movieclips with 3 frames each, PNG images in those movieclips sized at 1024x1024px. So that's 21 png images.
I need to use the cacheAsBitmapMatrix feature for full smooth performance and when I do, it crashes on the Retina device when loading 1024x1024px images.
On non-retina devices I load the lower resolution assets ( 512x512px) and that works perfectly fine with the cacheAsBitmapMatrix on. On the iPad 1 it runs super smooth.
So I started playing around with the different render modes:
No crashing on CPU mode and no crashing on DIRECT mode, only on GPU setting.
The retina device is NOT out of memory, it does not do anything really heavy. It just loads in these movieclips in a sliding menu, and tweens their alpha, scaleX and scaleY ( which is not part of the issue as it crashes without this too ).
    In summary:
1024x1024px images inside of movieclip containers crash an iPad Retina device when using cacheAsBitmapMatrix.
The fix I have found is to just lower the image size a tiny bit: from 1024px to 1016px, it resolves the crash and makes everything work perfect.
So, what do you guys think this could be? I tried with previous versions of AIR (3.7,3.8) and it happens on those versions too. I am using the latest beta of AIR 3.9.

I have not had that happen to me, so I can only speculate, but here are some questions that might help us narrow down the problem.
    1. Were the slides created on your ipad, or did you create the presentation on your mac/pc & then import it onto the ipad for presenting?
    2. You said When not using Keynote projected images are sharp." Does that mean that the same images used in the presentation display fine on the same projector when you open them in Phoots or another app?
    3. Is it only the images on the slide that are compressed, or does it impact text as well?
If you run the presentation on your ipad, not connected to any outside screens, dothe pictures show up normally, or are they compressed then as well?
Like I said, I havent' had this happen to me. My first guess (without knowing any of the details) is that maybe the presentation was created on another device & it was not set to display as 1024 x 768, but at some other aspect ratio, and since that it what the iPad displays at, it is compressing the slides to fit.

  • Adobe viewer, iPad retina, videos

How can I get the videos to show on Adobe viewer on my iPAD RETINA? Some videos I can view, but others I can't. On my iPad 2 I can view all the videos on the Adobe viewer.

    Thank you for your reply.
I am making an apple app using Adobe's InDesign. To test my folio files, I
upload to the Adobe Cloud and view the folio file on my iPad 3 with the
Adobe Content Viewer. The text, jpegs and buttons and the videos play
according to the folio settings i  have chosen.  Screenshot #1 shows a page
of the folio article as it looks on Folio Preview. Screenshot #2 shows what
happens when I tap on Behind the Scenes button. The video comes on full
screen according to my Folio Overlay settings. Everything works according
to the folio settings when I view the article on my iPad 3.
    THE PROBLEM
I recently purchased an iPad Air with the Retina Screen. When I tested my
InDesign folio with the Adobe Content Viewer on the new iPad Air, the text
and jpegs looked sharper and a lot cleaner than on the iPad 3. The buttons
worked according to my settings. The video, however, did not show up. I can
hear the audio. I can see the control panel, and I see the 'Done' when I
tap on the screen. But the screen remains black.
    THE ANOMALY
Screenshot 3 shows the video button for Stuart. When I tap it on the iPad
Air, the audio comes on but the screen remains dark. I can see the controls
when I tap on the screen.
Screenshot 4 shows the InDesign page for James. Screenshot 5 shows the iPad
Air Retina shot of James. When I tap it on the iPad Air, the video and
audio respond according to the folio settings. (See Screenshot 6)
On the iPad 3, the folio responds according to the folio settings.
How can I remedy this situation? Whatever help anyone can give me would be
    greatly appreciated.

  • IPad Retina Resolution - PPI issue

    Hi All,
I am really struggling to get my head around what is going on in my document.
I am in process of creating a page for iPad. it only has to be a single PDF which will then go off into a magazine (publishing company will be doing this).
Now the iPads all have different resolutions and PPI abilities. The original iPad and iPad 2 are 1024px x 768px @ 132ppi and the iPad Retina is 2048px x 1536px @ 264ppi.
    (See - http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/ for specs).
Now my issue has arrisen after I have tried creating a document in inDesign with the settings of 1024px x 768px @72ppi (default & unchangeable ppi settings).
I create my image which ive made large enough & dense enough to ensure quality at the top end iPad. This image is at size 2172px x 1536px @ 528ppi (.
When I place the image into the document at its full size, it is tiny inside the document. You can see this in the attached screenshot.
Can someone please tell me what is going on, pixel wise and what I should be doing to create a document suitable for its prerequisites.
    Many thanks,
    Tim

Now my issue has arrisen after I have tried creating a document in inDesign with the settings of 1024px x 768px @72ppi (default & unchangeable ppi settings).
While placed images do have a pixel resolution, Indesign documents do not. So, when you make a new document with the Intent set at Web or Digital Publishing you get pixels as the initial measurement units, but you are free to change them after the doc is created.
For measurement purposes Indesign assumes there are 72 pixels in an inch—obviously that's no the case for most monitors and tablets. The Link panel's effective pixels per inch reading is relative to the page dimension in inches. So, if you accept the iPad 1024x768 preset and change the measurement settings to inches you'll get 14.22" x 10.66" almost twice the size of the iPad's physical dimensions.
If I scale up a 264ppi image to fill the page on a 14.22" x 10.66" page I get an effective ppi of 144, but when the page is eventually displayed on the smaller 7.7" x 5.8" iPad screen the effective res will go back up to 264ppi.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Will I need to purchase iWork for my iPad if I purchase an iPhone 5s? Everybody knows the iPhone 5s with IOS7 gives iWork for free. I assume that if I buy an iPhone 5s (or 5c) then iWork would be listed as a "purchased" app in my itunes store under my account. My iPad retina is in the same account... or are keynote, pages, and numbers completely seperate between ipad and iphone? I know they would be a seperate purchase for my Powerbook. Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi,
I was able to load the Productivity Suite / Free !!  on both my iPad mini and my iPhone 5s with no problems and at no cost.

  • HP ePrint mobile app on iPhone 4S & iPad Retina--Both devices say "Photos (0)"

I have just installed HP ePrint mobile app on both my iPhone 4S and my iPad Retina. However, when I go into the app, when the main screen pops up ("Photos" -- "Cloud" -- "Web" -- "Email"), when I tap "Photos," on either device it says: "Photos (0)"--i.e., I'm assuming that the app thinks I have "zero photos" on both devices, which of course is not true. Other details: (1) I have a Photosmart 7510 on my home wireless network; (2) I am able to print OK to the 7510 using Apple "AirPrint"--no problem there; (3) I can also print using either device (iPhone or iPad) using the HP "PrinterControl" app. So, how is it that HP ePrint mobile app cannot "see" my photos on either my iPhone or iPad (especially since they can "see" those photos when using the HP "PrinterControl" app). Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this situation.

The issue is related to the privacy settings on ios 6. To resolve this go to settings on your device, then you should see a privacy section. In there go to photos and turn the eprint app on. This should work to allow you to see the photos.

  • Face time fades out and then tries to reconnect on new ipad retina display on WiFi.  Iphone 4s has no problem with face time from exact same location and same contact.  WiFi signal strong on both devices.  What gives?

    Is the router to small?
Not necessarily, if you are using Facetime all the data goes through your WiFi router, your cable/DSL modem, your ISP and the internet to Apple's Facetime servers and then, in reverse, down to the Facetime recipient. If your ISP connection is too slow or there is excessive traffic on the internet you can have Facetime problems.
Most WiFi routers can handle this unless others in the house are also using WiFi at the same time. The problem may be your ISP connection or congestion on the internet, etc.

  • How can I connect my Powerbook or iPad Retina via HDMI cable to 4K digital video camera to be a "control monitor"

How can I connect my Powerbook or iPad Retina via HDMI cable to 4K digital video camera to be a "control monitor"

That won't work with the iPad, unless maybe there's a "control monitor" app somewhere.
