Placing tiffs

The two images below are identical but were placed on the layout differently.
The left was placed and then the alpha channel used via the clipping path
The right was placed with the alpha channel selected in show import options.
Is there a way to get the left image to look like the right image after placing or is show import options the only way to do it?

"i need to know how to apply the alpha channel after placing it so it appears exactly as it does on the right (which was done with show import options selected... if that makes sense."
perhaps I misunderstood your question (the answer below is the best I can do)
you need to get to the Import Options dialog box again… and the easiest way to do that is to relink the image to itself. That is, select the image in the Links panel, click Relink, turn on the Show Import Options checkbox, then choose again from the Alpha Channel pop-up menu.

  • Placed .tiff files in illustrator have box around them.

I am wondering how to properly place .tiff files in illustrator, so that they can easily be set up for commercial printing. I have created a simple sell sheet for a product that has 3 placed tiff images in it. The images are circular and appear fine on screen. However, when printed, the images have a slightly darker box around them. The images were created in photoshop, and i'm wondering if i needed to use a clipping mask or perhaps another format for the images to maintain the transparency. Should i rasterize the images, embed, or keep linked? Any help would be great!

I am getting a dark line around psd images (they have clipping paths) which I place into illustrator. Everything looks fine in illustrator, but when I save the AI file with pdf compatibility and open it in photoshop, there is a dark line around the images. My solution was to save the bubble as a tiff file (there is an option to save with transparency), and then place the new file into AI. It seems to work soo-far.  After I placed the attachments into this forum, I realized that they are too small to see the black lines around the bubbles.)

  • Placed TIFFs or JPEGs: Is there a High Quality Display setting?

Does Illustrator CS5 have a setting like InDesign does where you can specify to make a placed TIFF or JPEG display in a high quality mode?
    Thanks-

    M,
    We may be talking Anti-Alias.

  • How do I disable Illustrator (CS6) from recognising TIFF paths inside placed TIFF files?

    Hi all,
I have recently output a job to print that was supplied .AI with a simple .TIFF image placed on an artboard at its desired crop.
After referring to the original TIFF file I have realised whilst inside illustrator my image suddenly has a clipping mask attached to it, and a lot of it is missing. (however in outline, illustrator only see's a single TIFF bounding box)
Looking more closely at the TIFF in Photoshop, i've found it has x3 paths inside it!)
Illustrator is picking these up and masking my photo. Is there a default function or process that can stop this from happening in the future, so it ignores any paths within the file?
It's concerning how many jobs may be ruined because of this auto feature.
I look forward to your response
    Thanks
    Matt

haha, it's not an easy one to describe.
So when checking the TIFF initially, it is a flat locked image: (image below)
when placed into Illustrator CS2 and outputting a PDF, I get this correct result: (image below)
When placed into illustrator CS6 and output to PDF I get this incorrect result: (image below)
Close up detailing masking effect: (image below)
When looking more closely in photoshop at my TIFF, it has this inside of it: (image below)
However, in illustrator there is nothing I can release anywhere as it still treats it as a flat image: (image below)

  • No preview with placed tiff in Illustrator cc?

While in Illustrator cc, when I place a tiff from Photoshop, the preview does not show up. I had this problem yesterday and I worked it out with help from this forum. So today I was placing images and everything was working perfect until I wanted to place another image, all of the sudden I couldn't see a preview again. I could see a preview of the other files I placed but not this one? I check PS preferences "always show preview" is clicked. Not sure what to do, is this a bug?

what do you see when you place the file--a gray box?
solution is probably same as yesterday--sounds like you may have some file corruption (what's the source of this 'new' tiff?)
open it in photoshop and do a 'save as' with a different name--see if that helps

  • Problems with placing Tiff images in CS2

When placing a Tiff image in CS2 the file crashes or a memory warning appears. I am able to place much larger EPS images, so image size is not necessarily a factor Saving the file as an EPS in PhotoShop is not a solution as I am placing GeoTiffs which must retain their geographic reference file. The OS is Windows XP 32 - a quad core proc. - Radeon HD 6350 graphics controller with 512mb (dedicated)

No - it is possible to place a geotiff in illustrator - I have been able to do it. However, now I have a new PC and am unable to place the same types of tiff images I previously was able to in an older PC.

  • Placed TIFF looks washed out compared to original in Photoshop

I have a TIFF file created in Photoshop with Adobe RGB (1998) color profile. It looks vibrant and great. When I place it into my InDesign document, however, it looks drab and washed out. InDesign color settings are:
    Working Space: Adobe RGB (1998)
Color Management Policies: Preserve embedded profiles (for both RGB/CMYK)
When placing, I selected 'Show Options' and tried using both Adobe RGB (1998) and Use Document Default. Nothing seems to make any difference.
This occurs on both my Mac Leopard 10.5.5 and Windows XP SP3 machines.

    Sorry - additional info:
InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on both computers
Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 on both computers

  • Color profiles of placed Tiff files

    Hi,
I'm using CS3 on Mac with 10.4.11. I want to know what happens to a color profile when placed in Illustrator.  My color settings in Illustrator are to "Preserve Embedded Profiles". My guess though is that as soon as I choice to embed the .tif, it is converted to the working space. I realize that when I save out of Illustrator as a EPS there is not a profile attached, but is the info still maintained in the document somehow or is it really converted to the working space? Thanks for any info you can give me!
    Trese

The way Adobe explains it ( i.e., Designer's Guide to Transparency CS1 ), the "Placed" file is converted to the Illustrator EPS' profile upon mismatch.  I disagree with the previous statement that the EPS is "Profileless".  The Illustrator EPS has an embedded profile setup in the color settings, which is read by a RIP or printer driver.  The key to all of this is to have the "Placed" file's profile match the Illustrator EPS profile, otherwise, there will be a mismatch and the "Placed" file's profile will be converted, or, if yoiu choose, you can assign a profile when you Place the file in Illustrator ( when, if you set it, Illustrator asks you what to do with the profile upon mismatch ).  You will encounter fewer problems by issuing the same profile to both the tiff and the Illustrator EPS.  This is how I've set it up into an established workflow.  There will be deviates, of course, and I think there is enough ways to deal with mismatches when they occur.
The Color Settings you implement in Illustrator are saved in the file and if you save as an EPS, the color information is saved as Postscript data, which, as I understand it, includes the profile you assigned or setup in the color settings.  To go a step further, the EPS information can then be read by Distiller and saved in a PDF which should also honor the same profile that came in the EPS.  All this comes back to the original tiff's profile, should it not match the Illustrator EPS, then a conversion will take place, but it will be based on the "preserved profile", not some arbitrary assigned conversion, Illustrator just converts based on the embedded profile.  This is how I understand it.  Others may want to chime in.

I can't use the threshold controls on a tiff image that I placed and traced. I feel dumb.
Plus, I never learned how to reduce the resoolution on my projects...

  • Numbers dropping placed TIFF images

I have a few versions of our company logo placed on various sheets in our master Estimate template. Frequently, when I create a new file from this template (or a copy of one that I've set up as a master for a particular ongoing client) I find that the images are missing and I have to re-insert them. This does not seem to happen every time, but quite often.
Does anyone know why this might be happening and how to prevent it? Thanks!

    Good.
If you prefer to keep your image linked you can of course replace the embedded image with a fresh linked one while still making use of the clipping mask.

  • How to List Placed Tiffs into a BY PAGE???

    Dear Scripting team,
Is there a way to list the name of graphics (links) on each page and make a list like:
    file1.tif Page 1
    file2.tif page 3
    file4.tif page 5
    file5.tif page 8
I can list the graphic names with this:
    Set myInDesign = CreateObject ("InDesign.Application.CS3")
    for each element in myindesign.ActiveDocument.links
    msgbox(element.name)
    next
BUT I can not get the page where the graphic is contained as my list above or say something like... myindesign.ActiveDocument.pages.item(1).links because it give me an error... i mean.. ican't specify the page where I wanto to get the links and also can't know the page number where the element (link) is contained...
ANY IDEAS?? Thank you!! Thank you!!!

    >myindesign.ActiveDocument.pages.item(1).links [..] give me an error<br /><br />That's because pages do not have a links property. Whatever manual you saw that in, throw it out, and use the proper Help manual. Pages have an allGraphics property, which conveniently "Lists all graphics contained by the Page." (from the ESTK2 Help). Rather <br />i unconventiently <br />is that this graphic type first contains a link, and the link then contains a filename -- you have to string'em all together by hand.<br /><br />Try this instead. It iterates over all your pages (first loop) and over all images on that page (2nd loop). This one is sure to display the items in order of appearance (which is possibly different when iterating over all links in your document at once).<br /><br />>for (var p=0; p<app.activeDocument.pages.length; p++)<br /><br />>     for (var g=0; g<app.activeDocument.pages[p].allGraphics.length; g++)<br /><br />>          app.activeDocument.selection[0].contents = app.activeDocument.selection[0].contents+"\r"+app.activeDocument.pages[p].allGraphics[g]. itemLink.name+" Page "+app.activeDocument.pages[p].name;<br /><br />[Before running this, draw an empty text frame and place your text cursor in that.]

  • Greyscale tiff won't colorize placed in Illustrator

I was working with a scan today, Greyscale and I was able to place it  into an Illustrator file then colorize it without issue. When I went  into the Photoshop file and duplicated the original locked scanned layer  and saved out the tiff would not colorize in Illustrator. Had to go  back to the raw scan and rework the file without duplicating the  original locked layer. This took extra time and was a bit troubling.  Does anyone know why the greyscale tiff with duplicated layer won't  colorize in Illustrator? Any insight to this would be greatly  appreciated. Oh one final detail, the colorization worked with spot colors but not CMYK builds. I forgot to mention that.

You could never colorize placed tiff CMYK files in Illustrator.  You can, however, colorize single channel Grayscale files and make changes to them. But then again, I base this information on CS4 on a home computer and not CS5 which is at work.

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?
    --Jay

The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • Illustrator CS5-Multiply used on tiffs are now hazy-gray in CMYK?

I have created AI documents in both RGB and CMYK document color modes. In both modes, I have a colored background or a photo. A TIFF file is Placed in the AI document on top of the background. It contains black line art on a white background (flattened in Photoshop, grayscale, Tiff). I use the Transparency>Multiply feature to drop out the white background, and leave the black portion of the artwork. I have other CMYK AI files with perfectly transparent artwork created yesterday. Everything is fine in RGB, all transparent...but the printer will need it in CMYK.
Today, I was working unbeknownst, in an RGB document, and in the middle of this project, changed the AI Color Mode to CMYK. Now 7 of the 10 Placed, Multiplied files have a gray "haze" over them that exists whereever the white is on the original file. Although I see these haze-gray boxes in the AI document, they come out transparent in a PDF file.
After doing that, I cannot create a new, fresh AI document and recreate the transparent backgrounds on the same Photoshop files in a brand new CMYK document using the identical placed tiffs.
In addition, the same files I used in the original document, are placed in the brand new document (For example, a dragonfly ink drawing.) The SAME tiff file now placed without any background AROUND the dragonfly but white windows in the wings where there aren't any black lines. When I Multiply, the area around the dragonfly is clear, but where the white was in the wings is now hazy-gray.
When I SAVE AS a PDF file, NONE of the placed tiffs are visible.
What have I done to change the way CMYK files are handled??? I was also working with drop shadows, and color swatch changes, on text, at the same time I decided to change the Document Color Mode.
Is there a better way to drop out the white background?
I use a iMac, OS 10.6.4, and Creative Suite 5.
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you. I'm not sure I'm responding to the forum correctly. I can
only respond through the email, can't find the Forum instructions on
line, and can't upload an image.
I checked the image modes in Photoshop. The PS files are not bitmap,
they are all grayscale. I use grayscale because I sometimes have to
colorize the black and white line drawing to a color, that can't happen
    with RGB or CMYK.
The printing method is a large inkjet-type print (not offset), a single
print, then high-pressure laminated to a product similar to Formica. The
printers have not had a problem with this method I've used before.
    (there are no color separations).
These files are huge because of the line art. A file that is 24"x36"
and 150 dpi preferred by the printer, makes the files very large. As I
understand it, a bitmap of ink line art needs to be 1200dpi, and at that
size it would be just huge.
In response to Doug's comment about how about combining all the "bitmap
work in PS and place the composite in AI as a single linked image".
Right now, with the client shifting the images around so, it's easier to
build the AI document with all the smaller vignettes as tiffs (which was
working up until this afternoon!). But I could consider combining it all
in PS, unless there was some layering issues. Like a giant puzzle piece.
I still don't understand why this is now happening to a new document.
And will it now mess up all my other projects that are half completed
and not corrupted. This has thrown me, entirely. I know just enough
about Illustrator to get me into a lot of trouble.
    Many thanks!

  • Warp effect tool illustrator, I want to arc an image/tiff

Can the arc tool in "Effects-warp" be used on a placed tiff? I have designed some labels and now the whole lot needs arcing to fit the bottle shape and the photo is not following all the type, is it possible to do this or can it be done in photoshop?
Well the answer is YES, what I failed to do was to embed the image first. Once embedded it worked perfectly!!!
I thought I would post this in case anyone else made the same mistake, hope it is helpful.

    Jackie,
It says "the selection contains objects which cannot be distorted"...:(
And the image does not show an unbendable thing, such as a (railway) rail?
Sorry, it was stronger than I.
It should work either way, and in 10 it works with just the linked image, without adding a rectangle at all.
But it might be one of the quaint behaviours. Here is a current thread about another one:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4228571#4228571
Maybe someone has told Illy that she can only work with vector artwork and has to leave anything with raster to others.
