Play count sync

I have my iPod set to "Manually manage music and videos" but still whenever I plug it into my computer, it syncs the play count of songs on my iPod, to the songs on my iTunes. How do I make that stop? This is a big deal to me because I mostly just listen to a smart playlist on my iPod of my top 100 most played songs. This doesn't work anymore because the songs on my iPod get reset to 0 everytime I plug it into my computer and open iTunes. How do I fix this??
I'm running the latest version of iTunes on windows (version 11.1) and iOS 7 on my iPod if that makes any difference.

I went into the music tab. Nothing is checked to sync.
Went into the preferences. It's already checked to prevent iPod from syncing automatically.
Any other ideas?

  • Play Count Sync Issues

hey here, I've had my touch for a week now but since updating to 1.1.3 I've noticed that any songs played on the iPod aren't added to the play count in iTunes. Anyone else have or had this problem, or any ideas for how I can cure his? I don't really want to uninstall as I have theipod how I want it otherwise.
    thanks

Are you making any edits to the songs in your library? If so, when you re-sync your Touch the updated songs in the library will be seen as new songs and will replace the versions on the Touch -- effectively bypassing any playcount updates.
Also, if you're auto-syncing to a specific playlist (or group of playlists) and you change the content of those playlists, it seems that the Touch will not update playcounts on the next sync.
If those aren't the problem then I don't know what is. I'm syncing just fine with 1.1.3 and iTunes 7.5 if that matters.

  • Play count sync for multiple devices

So, why is it that say . . . subscribed Podcasts that i watch on my iPod don't show as watched on my apple tv. They have separate play counts on separate devices - iTunes, iPod, AppleTV?
It's a bit annoying that i have to go thru the podcasts already viewed.
    Any suggestions?

the play count certainly syncs between all devices for me.
are the appletv and ipod getting the podcast from the same location (ie your itunes library) ?
once you have watched the podcast on the ipod (and you sync the ipod so that itunes knows you have watched it), do you then initiate a sync of the appletv so that it receives the update from itunes? (if you don't then appletv won't know it has been watched).

  • IPhone 4s does not sync purchased items' play count?

I recently bought a new album using my iPhone, and subsequently synced.
Now, looking at my recently played, I can see items I've played over the last several days, but not this album.
I really want this album to sync play counts as I really like having play counts.
As an iPhone user since the beginning, I'm really starting to get fed up with these silly little inconsistencies.
Has anyone ever experienced this problem, or know how to resolve it?
Would it work to delete from one and sync to the other? If so, which way?
Suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Okay, so, a few minutes after posting this, I gave up and decided to try something.
I deleted the files from my WIndows PC (which I am now using for the main syncing machine).
I then synced the phone to remove them. I subsequently added them back in, and synced them again.
    Presto, play counts syncing.
I have a feeling that when I downloaded from iTunes on the computer, and the phone seperately, somehow iTunes didn't consider the iCloud/iTunes songs as the same, and must have been treating them as separate files, rather than the same.
Now that I've added these "new" files in, it considers them to be the originals I guess!

  • When I sync my iPad with iTunes it does not update the play count?  Is there a setting I need to change?

When I sync my iPad with iTunes it does not update my play counts.  Is there a way to make this happen?

Are you using iTunes Match by chance?  I had no problems whatsoever with play counts synching between any of my devices until I started using iTunes Match.  I turned it off and magically my play counts synced.  Once. Hasn't happened again though.

  • Syncing resets play count!

    iTunes 10.1.1; iPod Touch 2G 8GB iOS 4.2.1
This started happening with the latest iTunes update.
Every time I sync, iTunes resets the play count to zero on the track I happened to be playing at the time I started the sync. The track is always paused and I have tried going back to the beginning of the track and going to the previous track; but still the same result.
The smart playlist I'm syncing selects 800 tunes at random based on play count > 0 and last played is not in the last 3 days. I suspect iTunes is having trouble with particular types of smart playlist - similar to problems some of us had with a previous update: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11332318#11332318

After trying all sorts of different combinations of things I couldn't find any correlation to playlists. I actually didn't start having this problem until after I re-created my Library following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
I only re-created the library to solve a separate issue with non-existant podcasts showing up in the Remote app. It did fix that problem, but created the play count syncing problem.
I have now reverted back to my old library and the play count syncing problem is gone.
So in my case this was clearly a problem with the actual iTunes library and not the syncing device (or somehow a combination of both).
I tried testing a brand new library in iTunes 10, but the syncing problem was still there.
It seems unlikely, but could this be a bug with libraries "created" in iTunes 10? I would assume most people have iTunes libraries that were created with an older version. There are probably not many people who have just started an iTunes library with version 10 and are also paying attention to play counts and how they sync. Perhaps this is why so few people seem to have this problem or be aware of it?
Have any of you re-created your library with iTunes 10 or started a new library with iTunes 10?

  • My iPod Shuffle 4th Generation refuses to sync up the PC plays count

As soon as a new podcast episode arrives in my Podcasts iTunes library, it shows up in that library with a plays count = 0.   When I start up iTunes and update the podcasts, I then copy all new (unplayed) podcasts to a Playlist named "1-UnheardPodcasts", then mark all unplayed podcasts in that playlist as Played, thereby setting the play count on those podcast episodes to 1.   I then copy a bunch of podcasts to my iPod shuffle 4th gen and wander off cackling into the night to listen to those podcasts.  In the fullness of time, I return to my PC, fire up iTunes, plug in my shuffle and see that the shuffle shows the plays count (on the episodes I have listened to) as 2.   I then sync the iPod to iTunes but the plays count in my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and in the podcasts library both stubbornly remain set to 1.   I then have to manually pretend to listen to the podcasts in iTunes again, fast forward to the end of each podcast, let it finish, then the plays counts everywhere are set to 2.  I can then delete the plays count 2 episodes from my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and all is right with the world and I'm ready for new episodes to randomly appear in my podcasts library.
My older first generation shuffles (both of which died and were replaced by the 4th gen shuffle recently) did not have this problem.  Sync from those would always update the plays count on the iTunes application on my PC to match what it showed for the plays count on the shuffle.
What's up with that?  Is there any way to fix this?  It happens whether or not I completely fill up the shuffle.
I also have problems with getting back to where I left off if I stop playing a podcast by pressing the centre button on the iPod face and then try to resume play a few minutes later.  If I shut down the shuffle and restart it, it seems to always resume play from where it left off.
I've got everything turned on in the iPod settings menu except the thing about reserving disk space for Windows files.
I've got what claims to be the latest version (11.0.4) of iTunes running under Windows 7 (64 bit) on a BIOSTAR MB with an AMD phenom II X4 820 2.8 GHz quad core processor with 8 GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of free disk space.
When I click on check for updates with the iPod attached on the iPod settings window, it comes back with "you have the latest version"

If you are loading the shuffle manually, by dragging podcast episodes to the shuffle in iTunes, that is probably why the playcount does not update in your iTunes library, after playing the podcast episode on the shuffle (and then connecting the shuffle).
When you use the manual method to load the shuffle, the iTunes library on the computer and the library on the shuffle are separate.  iTunes does not keep the two libraries "in sync."  Therefore, data such as playcount are not synced back to the computer when you connect the shuffle.
If you set up automatic syncing using the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes, iTunes keeps your iTunes library in sync with the shuffle's library (based on how you set up the shuffle's Podcasts screen).  So data, such as playcount, should sync back to the iTunes library.  In your case, if you maintain a playlist in iTunes with the unheard podcast episodes you want on the shuffle, you can select that playlist on the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes (where it says Include Episodes from Playlists).  iTunes will automatically keep that playlist in sync between your computer and the shuffle.
NOTE:  If you are currently NOT using automatic syncing, and you also have music on the iPod, you will also need to set up the shuffle's Music screen in iTunes.  When you start using automatic syncing, any content on the shuffle that was loaded manually is replaced.
The 1st and 2nd gen shuffles used a different very simple software design, compared to other iPods.  They did not have an automatic syncing mode.  You loaded it manually, but it was linked to only one iTunes library at a time.  Therefore, although you loaded it manually, iTunes does keep data (such as playcount) in sync.  On all other iPods, including the newer shuffles, iTunes only keeps the data in sync if you use automatic syncing.

  • Sync play count, last played, and rating with iOS 5

From other threads (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16563011#16563011 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/16505730#16505730 for example) it is clear that there are some problems with play count, last played, and rating information updating and syncing under iOS 5. I have at least a partial solution. I am posting it here instead of under one of the existing threads because 1) some discussions seem to be confusing the difference between updating the iOS 5 device data and syncing the updated data to the computer, and 2) some of the discussions are focused iPhone, and though the problem appears similar I only have an iPod touch to test the solution on.
First of all, this is not a new problem. Prior to iOS 5, I would plug my iPod Touch into the computer and not see any play count or last played data for songs I knew I had just listened to. I discovered that if I clicked (in my computer's iTunes display of the iPod) on one song that I had recently listened to, it would suddenly display play count and last played for all the songs played since the last update. I could then transfer this playlist data (more on this in a minute) to the corresponding songs on the computer. Under iOS 5, this no longer works, and in fact causes the new play count and last played data on the iPod to be lost. However, under iOS 5 there is a way to get this information to update, even though you don't see it when you first connect to the computer.
To make this work, you have your iPod set on Manually manage music and videos under the Summary tab of the iPod settings in iTunes. I have messed around with this for hours, including several restores and resets of my iPod touch, and have found no way to get this to work under various Sync Music options. I have been using the Manually manage mode for years because I use my iPod with numerous different iTunes Libraries on several different external hard drives.
Here's the trick: Manually manage must be in effect before you connect the iPod to the computer. After your iPod shows up in the iTunes interface on your computer, in the main view (where it shows the different tabs at the top and capacity at the bottom) there is a Sync button at the very bottom right. Click on this and wait for it to go through the Sync steps (don't worry, you're not losing anything), and, voila, when you go to the songs (on the iPod) you have listened to since the last time you connected to the computer, the play count and last played data will be there.
Unfortunately, it's not a simple matter to get this data synced to the computer, but it can be done. At first I thought that once I got the data to show up on the iPod I could go to the Music tab and Sync Music to get the playlist data to the computer, but this does not work. It will sync the play count and last played data that are on the computer to the iPod, overriding the newer data. The way I have been getting my playlist data from my iPod to my computer without ever changing the Manually manage setting is by using the Copy Tag Info Tracks To Tracks script from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes <http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=copytinforackstotracks>. This isn't hard to download or install or use and copies playlist information very quickly.
I have never had a problem with play count or last played on my 2nd generation nano, which still works beautifully. As far as I can tell, play count and last played have never worked well on the iPod touch; there are threads in discussions complaining about this from years ago. It would be nice if Apple would recognize that these are extremely important features to many users and make it a priority to make these basics work before (or while) adding a lot of other fancy features.

Just for posterity in case anyone else ever has a similar problem.
I found out I can work around my problem, but I have limitations. The only time it'll update the correct songs is after I restore it and then add the initial songs on to the Shuffle. The key is to not ever have a situation where I reshuffle the order of those songs. If I ever shuffle to better alphebatize or categorize things, the sync updating screws everything up. If say Song #3 on my Shuffle's playlist after the intitial transfer gets moved around to being anything other than the third song played, my Shuffle/iTunes will still think that song has been played although the Song #3 I actually listened to after the sync update will be different. Now I have to carefully compose and place what songs I want loaded on since I can't mess around with the playlist setup at all.
I know Apple support would likely blame my Shuffle for the problem (it's over 6 years old now). But it's funny how this only happened right after I installed 11.0. The update to 11.0.2 did nothing.

  • When I sync my IPod it remembers the plays and doesn't count them from 1 even though I reset the play count, any fix?

The problem is I like to track my play counts and like it to be correct, and it was having some errors so I reset my plays on all my songs however when I sync my iPod it will remember the amount of plays for example, if I play a song once on my iPod and then sync it it will have 1 play, then if I reset the play count back to 0 and play it on my iPod again when I sync it again it will give it a play count of 2 and so forth as many times as it gets played.
I have an iPod touch 5, the most recent iTunes update and the most recent iPod software (iOS 8.1) and am using windows 7, but I think the problem comes from the iPod because if i reset the plays and play a song through iTunes it will go to 1, but if i listened to it 3 times on my iPod when i sync it, it will then go to 4.
I have tried restoring the iPod and syncing it so there is no music on it and then putting it all back on but the problem persists. The only other thing i can think to do is uninstall/re-install iTunes but I'm worried if I do that it will delete my music. That is not a big deal as I have back up files elsewhere on my computer but I also have album art, lyrics etc. for all my 1077 songs and id rather avoid having to get it all back.
Anyone know how to correct this or is perhaps having a similar problem?
    Thanks, Sean.

If you haven't done so install iTunes on your computer. http://www.apple.com/itunes/

  • IPhone loses play counts when syncing with iTunes

I would like to repeat the question from this thread, which has mistakenly been marked "answered".
When syncing with iTunes, not all play counts are transferred into iTunes. When I turn the iPhone off, it even forgets the complete list of played songs (it is even deleted from iTunes itself).

I have similar problem. Played podcasts becomes UNPLAYED after synch with iTune.

  • Will play count and playhead position sync back to iTunes?

I have a bunch of smart playlists that contain all the unplayed episodes of my favorite podcasts. If I drag these onto the Shuffle, will the play count and playhead position from my Shuffle sync back to iTunes?
It seems like the answer is no -- this is really a one-way copy to the Shuffle, and not a "sync".

The iPod shuffle is supposed to maintain a "played" flag for played tracks. I don't know if podcasts will work the same way as normal tracks, but I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't. Having said that, after the iTunes 8.1 update, my shuffle's marking the wrong tracks as "played" and leaving the actually played tracks unmarked, so until the iTunes team comes up with a fix for all the bugs they introduced in that update, anything goes.

  • Problem when syncing: won't update itunes play count/last played etc

My old 2g shuffle was capable of updating play count/last played and adding songs to the recently played playlist when synced to my itunes.
Seems my new 3g shuffle can't do this.
I remember the trick with the 2g was to make sure it was switched off first before connecting/syncing, but I've tried all sorts of different combo's with the 3g and nothing will make it update song stats in itunes.
How can I make it update my itunes?

Ok, cool, I figured it out:-) Just in case anyone ever has the same problem, here's a quick rundown:
Basically it's the same problem you can get with 2nd gen shuffles if you're manually managing songs. So I just unticked manually manage music in the device summary and got the shuffle to sync music from a playlist I created/dumped all the songs I wanted into.

  • My play count is not recorded and doesn't sync with my last.fm account

is anyone else having this problem? it's been going on since about january...
i don't sync my music, i manually drag and drop songs to add them and then simply delete them when i don't want them on my phone anymore.
my play count is not showing up at all when i check it on my itunes, and there is no last played data either...

    Hello james,
It sounds like you are reaching the limit of authorized computers you can have with your Apple ID. The most you can have is 5 computers authorized, so try authorizing your computer to play your purchases on this computer.
To authorize a computer using your Apple ID
    Open iTunes
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.
If needed, you may also deauthorize all the computers that have been authorized with your Apple ID if you need to.
To deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID
If you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than two authorized computers. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/).

  • Sync Play count between iPod & iTunes when manually update selected

    Hello,
I use manual updating on iTunes simply because I have so much music, it wont fit onto my iPod, so I manually select the songs I want on.
I have been reading and find that doing this stops the iPod and iTunes from updating the Play count and Last played. Doesnt this sound a bit daft?
People have played suggestions such as creating certain playlists that are automatically synced with the iPod, but my songs are all in playlists.
Is there any addon or way that you can get the iPod and iTunes to automatically sync that part so it updates? Without turning on automatic syncing?
    Thanks

Playcounts only sync if you are syncing. They don't if you're manually managing your music. Sorry.

  • Tried to sync ipod but too full - now play counts have shot up?!?

I tried to sync my 60gb ipod classic but a message came up saying it was too full ect.. that was fine, but a day or 2 later i noticed that the play counts and ratings for about 1250 songs (out of 11670) are completely messed up - the play counts of 721 songs have gone up by 512, 426 songs have gone up by 256, 54 songs by 100, 24 by 80, 10 by 60, and i think some of the others have changed too.
It's really important to me to have my play counts!! I've looked all over the internet - some people have had issues with play counts but I haven't found any solution to my situation..
Obviously i know i can reset them, but i want them to be how they were before! any ideas?? or am i being stupid for asking?
    many thanks!

also, what i find strange is that the songs that are messed up have no relation to each other other than a lot of them are in the same albums..
