QT is designed primarily for the simultaneous playback of multiple tracks or movies. The player app does not contain any internal "playlist" capabilities as such.

Simplicity is in the eye of the beholder. There are several ways to do this. You could, for instance,
1) If the AVI compression formats are compatible with iTunes/your QT component configuration, you could place the audio and video data in an MOV file container, add them to iTunes, and place them in an playlist for playback.
2) You could create an Automator app which would play multiple AVI files or folders/subfolders of AVI files (in MOV containers) dropped on the app in a sequential manner.
3) You could create a "reference" movie (i.e., a pseudo "playlist) whose pointers point the the AVI files you want played in the order desired.
4) Use an alternative third-party player which includes an internal playlist.
And then perhaps repreat the sequence.
Easy, simply save the "Reference" movie mentioned above with the "Loop" option set.
In short there are many ways to do what you want. However, only you can decide which is the simplest for your purpose.

My mac won't read my external harddrive's videos that I took with my Nikon.  Half the videos won't play, and those are .avi files.  WHY won't they play anymore and how can i retrieve them?

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

  • Quiktime 7.7 plays no sound with .AVI files

Quiktime used to play sound for my .avi files, but no longer does.

After the install of Perian 1.1 drag the AC3 codec out of the folder it is in as Perian handles AC3. BTW AC3 is Dolby Digital codec for audio and not the problem with an AVI file.

  • Aperture crashes upon trying to play video. Exporting .AVI file wont play.

    Hi,
I uploaded my holiday pictures and 4 videos into Aperture and when I try to play the videos I get pretty bad beachball with no playback of the video. When I export the file I am presented with a SAM_xxx.AVI file. (SAM from Samsung camera). I have tried to play the file with Quicktime, VLC & MPlayer X. I ran the 4 files through DivFix++ and I am given the error, "Input file is not .avi"
Any thoughts as to whats going on? Aperture shows a thumbnail for the videos and VLC shows correct length but no playback.
    Thanks

I have both an iPad and iPhone connected to my Mac. I disconnected both, then restarted my Mac and Safari. No improvement. Used Lion Recovery System to reload Lion. Interesting thing, Safari 5.1.7 was installed rather than Safari 6. This made me happy, as Safari 6 has been nothing but trouble for me. When I opened Safari, it took me back to apple.com, even though my homepage is yahoo.com. I was immediately confronted with the infamous Steve Jobs video, that has crashed my computer every time it's popped up on my screen. This time, however, it didn't crash ... I just got the spinning beachball for about 30 seconds, then the Quicktime thermometer at the bottom started moving and I was sure it was going to work. After the thermomter passed about one-fourth of the way over, the screen blanked and the Quicktime thermometer started all over again. This behavior persisted until I got tired of it and went to my home page. However, I can open Quicktime and watch videos again, even the YouTube ones that were crashing every time. Now I just have to figure out how to never let a Software Update stick me with Safari 6 ever again. If it does, I'm simply through with it and will make Firefox my default browser. Thank you so much for getting me this far. I will keep monitoring these discussions to see if Apple ever gets Safari 6 to the point that I'll give it another trial.

  • Converting avi files so I can view on apple tv

I am very very new to the mac world so please don't laugh!  How do I convert avi files to a format I can view on my apple tv.  I have recently purchase a macbook pro.  Do I simply download software??  thanks so much, Karen

There are many video conversion options out there, but many of the better tools are free such as MPEGStreamclip.  From memopry there may be an AppleTV preset in MPEGStreamclip.
AppleTV1/2 use an MPEG-4 variant called h264 on the whole for stuff purchased from iTunes store.   They will play more basic MPEG-4 but not at as high a resolution as h264.  MJPEG is also supported on ATV2 but I suspect this is for some digicam files.
    See specs here:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
Another good free format converter is Handbrake which may also be worth a shot.  It has presets for AppleTV 1 or 2 and is quite straightforward.
Worth noting that video conversion, especially to h264 format, can be time consuming.

  • Any way to play CRAM/Microsoft video1 .avi files?

I used to be able to play them in Tiger, however now I have leopard they dont want to play in QT, VLC, DivX player or anything.
Just white screen with sound only.
    Any way of playing them?

    Yes.
The only way i found to make it work was to use FFMPEGX to convert the AVIs to .mov, apparently the older codec has been taken out of support for the latest QT.

  • JMStudio won't play .avi files - mpeg-2 works fine

Why doesn't JMStudio play .avi files?
A small application that I created with JMF 2.1.1 has the same trouble.
My .avi files can be played successfully with mediaplayer and also zoom player but JMStudio chokes on them. Why?
I want to create a two-pane player for side-by-side video comparison with JMF but I don't want to start the effort if simple .avi playback is not possible.
Sun's JMF 'supported format' page shows that all forms of .avi are at least 'playable' - yet my files are not.
I have several mpeg-2 files that are playable in JMStudio and also in my simple app - so I know that the code is working.
There are several old threads on this forum that ask this question but none of the threads give a decent answer.
    Please help.
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

    Got it working.
Apparently, JMF can't handle type-1 .avi files but it can handle type-2 .avi files.
Nero and Sony-DvGate both create type-1 .avi files in the capture process from a DV camcorder.
    I found a (Windows) utility - DvConverter - that will convert a type-1 .avi file to type-2.
I'm now able to play these type-2 .avi files in JMFStudio and also in my own prototype player.
Surprisingly, the FramePositioningControl functions also work - skip() and seek() !!!
I'm currently working on eliminating the 'comb-teeth' effect that exists in both JMFStudio and my own player.
I've read that this effect is the result of interlacing artifacts but my experience has shown that it also has a lot to do with the codec that's running. In windows, installing, un-installing, and re-installing codecs has a tendancy to mess with the registry in unpleasant ways resulting in a lot of time wasted trying to get rid of this 'comb-tooth' effect.
Andrew, do you know of a foolproof way to solve this problem on windows?
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

  • How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC.  All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.

Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • Will ATV play .avi files/films?

    Hi,
I am thinking of getting rid of my Cisco Kiss 1600 as I am having codec error messages spring up frequently.
Does anyone know if ATV will play my library of .avi files that I have? Will I have to convert or import them to iTunes?
Any advice around using the ATV as a media (specifically films) streamer would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Dave

Does anyone know if ATV will play my library of .avi files that I have?
As AVI is a container, not a format, the answer can only be that it depends on the codec. See below.
Will I have to convert or import them to iTunes?
Yes; use MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro to convert to MPEG-4. You may need to install Perian. Some AVIs can't be played or converted on the Mac.

  • How do I get quicktime 10 to play avi files

Bought a macbook pro a few months back, and it doesn't seem to play avi files. How can I fix this.

Install Perian. If that doesn't work, you probably can't play those specific AVIs on a Mac.
Neither the QuickTime Player nor MPEG Streamclip can convert a file that it can't play.

  • AVI file only plays sound, NOT video in Premiere CS6 and Element

I tried getting this to work in Premiere pro cs6 or premiere element but it wouldn't accept this avi video file. When importing the avi file to either application, the file is imported but it shows up as an audio with no video. The video does play just fine in Windows Media Player. The file is archived as an avi file from a lorex dvr system with a codec IMM4. It is encrypted with the date and time which is very important to maintain.
I have tried the following, but same problem of no video, only sound persists.
Download the latest 32-bit static build of FFmpeg from here: Zeranoe FFmpeg - Builds
Open the archive; you'll probably need 7-Zip since the archive is a .7z file. Extract the ffmpeg.exe file in the archive (it's in the "bin" folder) to the folder containing your AVIs.
Create a text document (Notepad is fine) called "avi2mp4.bat" (no quotes) in the same folder as the AVIs, making sure to change the default TXT extension to BAT.
Paste the following into the BAT file:    @ECHO OFF
    for %%a in (*.avi) do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f mp4 -y "%%~na".mp4
Once you save the BAT file, double-click it; your AVIs will be rewrapped to MP4s without any conversion. The MP4s will correctly import into Premiere Pro.
I would appreciate anyones insight on this matter.
The following is the GSpot report on the file:

    I'm having the same problem.
CS3 works fine with the avi files, but CS6 can't decipher it.
Very aggravating - I thought CS6 was supposed to be an improvement.
Luckily I have not uninstalled CS3.
One solution I found was using Windows Movie Maker to open the file and then save it to a WMV format.
    That opened correctly in CS6.
    It's still another step I didn't need in CS3.

  • Cannot play avi files from my samsung digimax i5

Hello y'all. I can't seem to play any of my avi files from this camera in quicktime. I have done some research and it seems I can view them on a vlc player which is fine. But how will I create movies in imovie and idvd when quicktime can't read them. It seems that there was a codec to download which I have but there is still no sound, just a picture. Can anyone help?

You may be able to get the audio to play by using this freeware but no guarantees:
    http://www.3ivx.com/divxdoctor/
If the Doctor can't fix it you may want to open one of these videos in QT and then use the MovieInfo window to reveal the compression methods used for audio and video. Post those and perhaps someone will have more info on how to get the audio decompressor.

  • Why cant i play some avi files an other avi files work ?

where can i get the codecs to watch avi files ? i can watch some avi files but not all why is that ?

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might work. If not, you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Do not install both Perian and the DiVX/3iVX codecs at the same time.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

  • Why final cut express wont read my avi file?

    Hi all.
I am currently expreience some problem. Few days ago, i was shooting a video project with my D3s. My D3s shoots in AVI format. yet i dont know why the final cut express and the quick time only able to play and edit the avi file with sound? and wont be able to edit or play the video without the sound. [my d3s have an option which can let me recored the video without sound]

    Hi
There is a bit of confusing about this.
    • .avi - is a container - not a codec and can contain old .avi with codecs as Indeo 5 - and this needs to be converted
to be used in any iMovie or FinalCut (as I understands it)
    • I think Flip4Mac is the program to buy and use.
Howto find out what Codec - If Your .avi movie opens in QuickTime Player - then open Movie inspector and read it.
