Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Unknown error -12894 when I try to play a movie rental

I bought a movie rental to watch while I was on the road.  When I tried to play it on the plane however it would not play and I got this error message:
The operation could not be completed.
    An unknown error occurred (-12894)
I have tried to play it again at home and I get this same error message.  How to I reload this purchase so I can watch the movie?

I don't believe I've seen a solution to that error code. There's a new version of iTunes out, have you installed it yet, it might be worth trying. You might also try restarting your Apple TV and router.

  • HT1657 why cannot I play itunes movie rental on our tv?

I rented a movie off itunes, but th eeror message says 'thr connected disply is not authorised to play protected movies.

Try restarting your iTunes in 32-bit mode, as per the following document:

  • Why isn't ATV able to play my movie rental through iTunes on my Mac?-I can see it on ATV through the computer icon but it won't play.

So I've had my Gen 2 ATV for a little less than a year..it's been great...up to last week!  Now nothing downloads and all I get is ''able to view in 90 hours...all week it's not gone under 70 hours.   So I went to Itunes on my Mac and downloaded it again thinking it should show up as a rental through the computer on ATV..it does it's right there...but can I play it?  Heck no!  First it gets the icon showing its buffering..or whatever it's doing and it just stays there doing nothing..then I tried it again an hour later and I get an error message that I need to authorize my computer....I go back to check in Itunes and of course the computer is authorized.
I've just spent $12 on the same movie trying to get it to work and I'm just so over reading in all the forums but finding nothing that will fix this issue.  Does Apple even care?  Sooo many people with problems and no help to fix the issues.  THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY INTERNET CONNECTION!
How about Apple just fixing whatever it is that's wrong?  I can only think it has something to do with the last update I did since nothing has worked properly with movies since then.

    Hello there, Abigail.
It sounds like you are unable to watch an HD download becuase of the message saying that your display must support HDCP. The following Knowledge Base article offers up nformation on why this message can pop up:
iTunes for Windows: Unable to view or play HD video content that requires HDCP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3354
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a security feature requiring the use of HDCP certified products in order to display digital media like High-defintion (HD) video. In iTunes for Windows, in order to view HD content, both the display hardware (computer screen, LCD, external monitor, and so on) and video card driver must support HDCP. For additional information on purchasing and viewing HD Videos, refer to iTunes: Purchasing and viewing HD Videos.
If you want to download the SD version you can do so from Purchases in iTunesas shown by this article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Download previous purchases from the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12491
Click iTunes Store near the top of the iTunes window.
Click the Purchased link at the right of the iTunes Store homepage (below Quick Links).
In the page that appears, select a category.
iTunes shows you which of your purchases are available for download. You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download.
If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re viewing by album, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading.
To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.
To download an item, click its Download button .
Be sure to uncheck the Download HD When Available in the lower right corner before downloading the movie.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Can't play iTunes movie rental because of QuickTime error????

    Dear All,
I just rented and downloaded an HD movie from iTunes ("Despicable Me"), but can't play it, because instead I get the error message: "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."
I do have QuickTime (V.10.1) as well as the latest version of iTunes (11.0.4).
How can I solve this supposed incompatibility problem?
Or can I at least get a refund or credit on the unused rental?
    Thank you!!!

When I read your post, I checked my version of QuickTime, and see that it is version 10.2.
Then I noticed you are not running Mountain Lion - you are still on Lion per your post.
I don't know for sure if that's the problem, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

  • Quicktime V7.4 won't play movie rentals

I upgraded to QT 7.4 and now iTunes won't play my movie rentals. It just somes me the movie with no sound. I have even gone so far as to uninstall 7.4 and install 7.1, but then the movie won't play at all, just goes to the iTunes store and then stops, doing nothing. Can anyone help? Much appreciated.
    Larry

I was having the same problem but just found a solution for IE. You need to make sure the QuicktimeCheck Class addon is enabled. Tools>Internet Options>Programs>Manage Addons. (Addons currently loaded in Internet Explorer)
I am not sure how this got disabled but enabling it got rid of the "Get the latest Quicktime" message and allowed me to view trailers once again.

  • ITunes HD movie rentals/purchases don't play in QuickTime player

I am trying to play HD movie rentals/purchases in QuickTime player. Although I can play them without problems in iTunes, opening the movie file in QuickTime player only gives me a grey screen and no sound. The "grey screen" issue occurs several times in the community, but for my case I haven't found any solution so far. I am using Windows 7 (64-bit), and I have all the latest versions of iTunes and QuickTime Player (free version) installed. I appreciate any suggestions for help.

    SteveEli wrote:
i can open the files in VLC, and when i spress the space bar, the preview window plays the file. It also plays the file when i click on it once, then press the play button on the file itself.
that tells me, the needed codecs are already on the system.
m4v is a container format for iTunes and contains mostly two streams. One video H264, one sound mp4
Check handbrake for its sound settings.
Try to rename the movie into kids playing.mp4 and check if Quicktime will open it.
    Quicktime is a crap.
    By the way...
    What OS X ?
    What version of Quicktime?
Generally ... if VLC, iTunes, FrontRow is available and plays the movies, why want to play it in Quicktime?

  • Movie rental plays on atv3 only through airplay from ipad

In ATV 3 downloaded rental movie disappears from line up of rented, purchased etc. I can download rental movie on to the ipad 4th gen and iarplay the movie on atv 3 only. I get a message on atv3 to go to settings and downloads but there is no "download" section in the settings for ATV 3. If I select the "check for rentals" I am told no rentals are present.
Basically, I can't play my movie rental through through atv3 but have to relay on my ipad to airplay it to atv 3. Help!

I have spent 2 hrs. searching this forum and others for a solution to this problem. I have the same problem - I have an iPad 2, brand new ATV. We don't have fast Internet at home (can't stream video), so I rented a couple of movies from iTunes onto my iPad. I have a DLink router running (with no Internet connected) - the ATV and iPad are both on that network. When I mirror the iPad, the ATV says (on the TV) - it can't show it (I can't remember the precise message). Tried two movies - same result.
I know you can't move a rented movie you downloaded onto an iPad to your computer. But it seems like you should be able to watch a movie rental from your iPad to your TV via ATV. Is that not the case?
    Wow ....

  • HT1657 I am going on a 2 hour flight. Do I have to be connected to the internet to play the movie?

I want to rent a mivue on my MacBook to watch while I am in an airplane. I will not have an internet connection. Can I watch the movie without an internet connection?

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
You may need to validate the rental prior to watching so it starts the rental period timer and for that you will need an internet connection. You can probably do that by starting the rented movie while on the Airport Wifi or right before leaving home. You'll have 24 hours to watch the movie after you start it.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:
iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657
Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • How is it that my Apple TV will instantly stream a Netflix movie yet it takes HOURS to load a movie rental?

I've tried everything.  It makes no sense.  So, Apple has made a Netflix device???  Anyone else have this problem and find a solution?  I would really like to watch my movie right now rather than 1 hour and 26 minutes from now (currently the amount if time left before movie is ready to play).

AppleTV movie rentals are HD by default.
They are fixed size and weigh in around 3-4 GB size compared to 1-1.5GB for SD.
Enough of the movie has to download to allow it to play back without interruption - this is calculated and you get a 'ready to start in' figure.   If you use the AppleTV for other things while waiting for a rental, unfortunately it seems to flush the part already downloaded so you have to start from scratch again.
If you go to iTunes Store Setting in AppleTV and disable HD rentals, it's likely any newer rentals (not existing ones) will play quicker in SD.
Test your sustained download speed somewhere like speedtest.net - you are probably getting around 2-3Mbps.  A connection of around 6-8 Mbps is needed for near instant streaming.  If your sustained speed is good it could be traffic shaping by your ISP, use of some DNS servers or even Apple's servers playing up.
Netflix on the other hand reduces stream quality for slower connections so plays almost immediately whatever the connection speed.

  • Movie Rentals / Purchased TV Shows no longer play on iTunes

Playing movie rentals and purchased TV shows have been working just fine on iTunes until a few days ago when I attempted to watch a movie rental, a pop-up warning came on and I pressed OK too quickly to fully read it. It said something about being incompatible. Unfortunately, since the error, I'm unable to watch the movie or any of the purchased TV shows on my MacBook Pro. All I get is a black screen with nothing happening after repeatedly pressing the Play button. I've tried to delete and re-download the TV shows, and iTunes Support has had me delete the movie and TV shows and re-download them. Still getting the black screen. Can anyone help??

The lack of a purchase date, although I am not quite sure why it happens, does not in itself prevent the track from being authorized and played.  However, since the account name is correct and they have disappeared from your purchase history, something may have been corrupted.
Unless someone here has a better idea,  you should take it up with iTunes Customer Service.

  • TS1424 Itunes movie rental wan't play...

i download a movie rental on my Itunes on my mac and i only get a black screen, the movie don't play what should i do? I even can select the chapter but still the movie don't play.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • Movie rental wont play

I just rented two movies and they both finished down loading, i tried playing both of them and neither of them will. The screen just stays black and does nothing
    any ideas?

From the iTunes Store Terms of Sale:
    MOVIE RENTALS
Movies are viewable only on your Mac or Windows computer (using iTunes version 7.6 or later), iPhone, video-enabled iPod (iPod touch, iPod nano (3rd generation), or iPod classic), or on TVs using your Apple TV. Movies in high definition resolution (HD) are viewable only on TVs using your Apple TV and must be downloaded directly to your Apple TV. Movies are viewable only on one device at a time.
You must be connected to the iTunes Store when moving or streaming movies. Once a movie is moved, it is no longer viewable on the sending device. You may only move movies to another device from your Mac or Windows computer. Movies downloaded directly to your Apple TV may not be moved.
You have thirty (30) days after downloading a movie to begin viewing. Once you begin viewing, you have twenty-four (24) hours to view the movie (the “Viewing Period”). You may view the movie an unlimited number of times during the Viewing Period. Movies are not viewable after the thirty (30) day period. Stopping, pausing or restarting a movie does not extend the available time for viewing.
If you move a movie to an iPod or iPhone and then use iTunes to restore the iPod or iPhone before you finish watching it, the movie will be deleted and will not be recoverable. This also applies to choosing Settings > Reset > Erase all content and settings on iPod touch and iPhone.
    Broadband Internet connection required.
