  • Playing dvds with vob formats on mac?

my mac pro os x 10.6.8 uses vlc and real time players which don't play dvds with vob format. The mac dvd player 4.6 was recently installed, but it fails to work on mac. Dvd player 3.1.1 also failed as an older version. Whhat would be the right mac dvd player version to use on my mac?

That seems to be the general consensus from what i am reading, memorex is terrible media! Something else to note, the DVD played fine on two other MACs that were running OSX on 10.6.5 and 10.6.6. the issue is on the machine that is running 10.5.8. Could it just be a compatibility issue with the operating system not being up to date?
BTW, the stills are PPT slides converted to JPGs, and yes i am importing them as slide shows.

  • Can't Play DVD (with VLC, Totem, Xine, MPlayer), But Works in Windows

I have a DVD that I can't play for the life of me in Arch. I've tried VLC, Totem, Xine, and MPlayer. And I do have libdvdcss installed. Other DVDs work fine.
With VLC the DVD menu comes up, but when I hit play I get choppy sound and no picture. And I get these errors:

With Totem I get the DVD menu and when I hit play it just freezes.
With Gxine I just get a popup window that says "Media stream scrambled/encrypted" (but again I do have libdvdcss, libdvdread, and libdvdnav installed). In the terminal Gxine reports it's using libdvdcss to get the encryption keys and it appears to all go fine, but then I get the "Media stream scrambled/encrypted" popup window.
Mplayer plays the the DVD but the image is scrambled and the sound is a little choppy.
On the other hand, in Windows, on the same computer, the DVD plays fine with an older version of VLC (0.8.6d) and with Media Player Classic with the K-Lite Codec Pack.
I'm especially baffled that VLC does it in Windows, but not in Arch (nor in Debian).
    Any thoughts? Thanks.

Rasi wrote:Welcome to copyprotection hell. Many dvds are not only encrypted using css, but with several other mechanisms too. Such dvds cannot be played back on linux. It might work with one of the commercial players, but definately wont work with free tools.
That's interesting. I didn't realize it was all css. But how does that explain in this case the DVD did work with free players in Windows. As I said, both with Media Player Classic with the K-Lite codec pack and with an older version of VLC (0.8.6d)? Thanks.
That is very possible. All those players use (or can use) direct show. As soon as you have the needed filter installed by SOME software all those players will be able to make use of it. And i think Vista even had dvd filters pre-installed.
Btw. One of the more common protections on dvds is called arcos and is developed by Sony. Google for it

  • Sound Distortion playing DVDs with Audigy2 Va

Last time I have problems playing DVD movies on my computer: The sound is distorted
by scratches like an old vinyl. I am using a SB Audigy 2 on Win XP. I have tried several software DVD players, reinstalled the old drivers from CD and cleanly installed teh newest drivers via internet auto update. I also tried to update my VIA chipset drivers, deactivated several background programs etc.
I found out that disabling the sound acceleration in DXDiag removes the sound distortion but then the sound (speech, effects) within a movie are extremly quiet compared to the music.
Another thing: First I deinstalled completely the software and drivers from my audigy to replace it with new ones. Then I had to notice that the new Audio Control Center does not support the option to send bass-frequencies to my subwoofer. I could set the speakers to 5. but had no chance to get my subwoofer working. At the moment I have status quo by using new drivers, but my old creative applications for configurating my speakers.

Ijust checked the preferences, go to Disc Setup and on the bottom in the Audio section, check off the box that says "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression" see if that helps.

  • Play DVD with audio sound via Airport Express speakers

Is it possible to play my DVD with audio sound via my Airport Express speakers?
I can play music with iTunes trough these speakers, it would be nice if I can hear my DVDs aswell.
iMac intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Not using Front Row.
The real issue here is that audio and video stream at different speeds and it is hard to maintain sync. You know how when you hit play within iTunes it takes a while for the song to start through the speakers? It's the same with the DVD. So you'd need to work an offset into the audio when playing a DVD and it's not an exact science.
You can download VLC player and mess around with the offset, then you'll also need a program like Airfoil to be able to force audio through the airport express.
    Good luck!

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:
when I want to watch a DVD on the laptop, i simply right-click the title and go for 'open with VLC' (which gives me the menu and so on) ... when I try to do this on the iMac, however, there is no
'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?

  • Playing dvds with quicktime

i just purchased the component to quicktime that allows me to play DVDs on quicktime but i still cant get my dvds to play in quicktime. when i put the dvd into my computer it doesnt open up with quicktime and when i look at the differnt files there are so many different video files on the dvd and none of them open up with quicktime. how do i get my dvds to play in quicktime now that i downloaded the mpeg2 player for quicktime?

Even though it is not encrpypted it could still be in transport_stream format and the component will not play it. Try this freeware. The Mac version will play transport_stream, so maybe the new Windows version will also. Mpeg StreamClip

  • Can't play DVDs with Totem

I cannot get Totem (Movie Player under GNOME) to play unencrypted or encrypted DVDs. Although it works fairly well with mplayer, I'd rather use Totem. Whenever I insert a DVD, Totem starts automagically (as it should) but spits out an error saying that a plugin is missing. I've installed every required gstreamer plugins along with libdvdcss (for encrypted DVDs). I know I could use VLC or GMplayer or Totem-xine but frankly I'm baffled that this won't work under Arch but works fine under Ubuntu (I dual boot between these two distros). Thanks in advance.

I think it has to be said that playing DVDs is not one of totem-gstreamer's strengths at the moment.  The Movie -> Play Disc 'Whatever' menu option just gets me the error about not having the appropriate plugins, even though I have the whole collection installed.  The command line "totem dvd://" will play a DVD but without either DVD menus or the ability to successfully change the audio track (so no viewing Night Watch without learning Russian first, for example!).
Swapping out totem for totem-xine ought to get working DVD playback with menus; however, if you're going to install xine-lib then you might as well go the whole hog and install xine-ui or kaffeine, both of which are much better movie players IMHO.

  • Playing DVDs with 5.1 sound

I connected Bose Companion 2 speakers to the stereo jack of MBP. The problem is when I play DVDs that come with 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound, some of the sound effects cannot be heard as they are channels not picked up by the stereo jack. Is there any way that they can be mixed into 2 channels so that they can be heard thru the speakers ?

Ijust checked the preferences, go to Disc Setup and on the bottom in the Audio section, check off the box that says "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression" see if that helps.

  • How to play DVDs with QT??

I can't watch DVDs with QuickTime! When the DVD should open, QT says that it can't open it. I hate that! It's so annoying!! Why doesn't it open them!? Someone please answer if you know why!

    Hi, Donny,
Sorry, but if you're referring to a commercial DVD, those are copy-protected. Breaking the copy protection is illegal in the US, so discussing ways of doing it are not allowed here (since the US courts have been holding in some cases that even discussing in print such cracking may be illegal). If you're outside the US where such de-encryption is legal (though it's up to you to make sure that your use of the material is legal), search around the net and you'll find places that can provide tools for de-encrypting the files for use.

  • Trouble Playing DVDs with Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter ?

So I went and bought the Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter for my 30" Cinema display to connect to my MacBook Pro.
I open up Apple's DVD player and the screen is blank but I can still hear audio.
If I unplug the display, the movie will display properly. Rebooting with the display plugged in doesn't help either. I also deleted all the DVD players enc setting files so that they would re-initialize but no luck.
Any idea what this problem might be??

You've probably fallen into the nasty pothole created by the advent of HDCP compliant graphics on Apple computers and a mishmash of older and newer Apple gear that does/does not support HDCP.
Ironically, if you were using an older Mac notebook (prior to late 2008), everything would play just fine because HDCP wouldn't come into play anywhere.
That is my guess as to what is happening.

  • Problem playing DVD with FrontRow

Hi, watched my first DVD (regular DVD, no rip) with Front Row. Two problems:
    - There was an incredible delay when I tried to use the infrared remote during the movie. Turning down the volume took the imac about two minutes to process the request.
    - At the end of the movie the computer froze up partially. I still could play/pause the movie via FrontRow but could not exit front row or switch to another application.
(The only other application running on the iMac during that time was iTunes, idling).
    Any ideas? Alex

  • Problems playing DVD with DVD player

I have my original superdrive. Today, we were playing a DVD we had burned with iDVD. It was playing just fine until it got to a certain point and then it kept freezing up. I got an error message stating: DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from. There was an error reading from the disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36] But, the disc is not dirty and it plays just fine in my son's computer. I have used a Maxll Lens Cleaner a half dozen times and it still hangs up when it gets to this point on the DVD. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem?????

Defects on/in DVDs can be unseen by the eye but the
drive's laser can have problems reading the "bad"
areas. I've seen this problem from Mac to Mac (or
PC). What about other discs? Same problem?
    Regards,
Yes, same thing with another disc the other day, just I was told that it was a defective disc. But, considering the same thing happened today with another disc and the disc plays just fine in my son's emac, I think the problem is my super drive.

  • Share dvd with windows vista

hi, I have the new mac mini and would like to share the dvd with a windows vista pc, after all the installation and the configuraztion of both apple and pc on a local network, I can see the windows pc but it doesn't share the dvd!
    someone can help please!
    thank you

I figured the Windoze (I like that...) machines could see the contents of the disk regardless of what the iMac sees.
Clarification -- Hmmm. I guess the main thing I need is just to see the DVD drive on windoze. I can't figure out why the drive won't show.

  • Satellite A200 does not play DVDs won't play

I'm a first time user on this forum so hello to everyone.
My problem is that my (Vista-running) A200 Satellite will not play DVDs. When I try I get the following message: "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings. Needless to say, I've played around with the relevant settings and there was no change to the situation. In a response posted at a different forum, someone suggested that I ditch Windows Media Player in favour of something better. I thought the alternative program he suggested would be free but it wasn't. Anyway, I've tried playing DVDs with other programs and got the same basic message. So it's not a Windows Media Player thing, it's a playing DVDs thing. Also, it doesn't matter if WMP isn't the BEST DVD player - I just want to play DVDs!! I've written to a Microsoft customer care helper person and they wrote back saying that it wasn't their problem. They consider it a "hardware matter". I don't buy that.
Just some history - I bought the computer second hand from a good friend. Now I can't remember ever playing a DVD on the computer, which slightly confuses things for the following reasons. Just after I bought the computer, which runs Vista, I installed MP3 player software that disagreed with the CD/DVD player drivers. This I think is a fairly common problem. That time Microsoft reps were happy to help me and told me to delete two key lines of the registry. That fixed the problem to some extent because now the drive a) existed again and b) could read and play CDs. But when I tried to play a DVD I got the above-mentioned message.
So like I say, as I don't remember ever even trying to play a DVD on the drive, I don't know whether or not the problems are related to the MP3 software clash problem, although it doesn't seem unlikely that they are related. Finally, the computer was less than a year old when I bought it and in every other respect it has been fine (Vista's intolerable sluggishness notwithstanding). Sadly the extended warranty has now run out so I hope it's not a hardware problem. The point is that since I've never even played a DVD on this thing, and it plays CDs with no problems (furthermore, the drive can READ DVDs, it can tell me all the chapters that are on a DVD and read files off it - it just won't play movies), I don't think it's hardware. I think there's some bug going on.
If anyone could shed any light on this matter, I would be eternally grateful!
    Regards
    Tom

Turns out that my confidence in Windows Media Player was misguided.
I wrote and said as much to the Microsoft rep who advised me to look elsewhere for advice.
I further told him that from now on, if I meet anyone with the same problem I will give them the advice with which I was originally provided - don't use Windows Media Player.
Heeding the rep's advice, I looked around on the website for the company that produced my DVD drive (Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device) and in other forums, I forget where I found the advice but this media player:
Videolan Media Player Downloadable for free at:
    http://www.videolan.org/
seems to play DVDs with no problems. I hope someone else might benefit from the information.
    Good luck to all
