Playing manually added Video Podcasts?

I have a 5th Gen (60GB) and I update some podcasts manually and other automatically.
When I manually add a Video Podcast to my iPod, it does not add to the Videos>Video Podcasts directory, nor to the music directory. I've managed to get around this issue by creating a podcast playlist which finds the video and allows access through Video>Video Playlists>
Is there another, more reasonable option?
P.S. I assume my issues are related to my desire to automatically sync some podcasts and add others manually (an option "available" in the iPod Preferences, right?) and my solution may ultimately be to do everything automatically or manually, but I'd rather not.
Thanks in advance for all replies!

I have exactly the same problem with a 5th Gen 30GB. The onlyu way to view manually-added video podcasts seems to be the way you suggest: to create a playlist. It's the same for audio podcasts, incidentally.

  • Can't play manually added videos since upgrading to IOS 8

Since upgrading to IOS 8, my iPhone 5 won't play any videos that I copy to the device manually through iTunes.
These are videos that I've played on the iPhone before, so I know they are compatible and of the correct format.
Basically what is happening is that I can copy them across and they show as being on the device, yet when I eject the iPhone and open the Videos app, the video player immediately presents the message 'Cannot play video make sure you are connected to a wi-fi network'
When I reconnect the iPhone to iTunes, the videos still show as being on the device, but they all have a small exclamation mark next to them.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
EDIT: I have just discovered that if I add the videos to my iTunes library first, then sync them to the iPhone, they play normally. However, I do not want to have to keep adding any video I want to play into iTunes first, I'd rather just copy them straight off my external HDD as I used too before.

I have this problem too, but even adding first the video to iTunes isn't working. The videos I'm trying to add to my iPad are in my iTunes library and were in my iPad before the iOS8 upgrade (and played normally), but since the upgrade, none of them work. When transferred to the iPad in the video app show no content, and viewing the iPad content from iTunes just shows the video title in gray with the exclamation mark.
    Waiting for help too.

  • Cant play or import video podcasts from garageband to itunes

    Hi,
ive just update iTunes to version 7.2, however since doing this i can no longer import any kind of video podcast or imovie file to itunes. This is driving me mad as its very important for me to be able to do this as its a big part of my job!
If i delete the video track in garageband and just export it as a normal audio podcast it works fine, its just video files that are the problem, im pretty sure its iTunes related and not garageband, any ideas about whats going wrong?
(iTunes and garageband have both been updated)

Mike you are an absolute legend. Thankyou, this has been troubling me for weeks. Works perfectly now mate, nice one!
On another note, why did quicktime not update itself automatically, as i did do software up date, even ran software update from quicktime, but it didnt find anything, even though it was only on 7.0.4, surely it should have updated itself and saved me all the trouble?

If you are referring to a "thumbnail" with title to the right, either reset the "TV out" software switch to "Off" or ensure you are playing your podcasts under the Video menu and not the Music menu.

  • Adding videos to the proper playlists?

This is probably a question that has already been asked and answered, but I've been having trouble finding the answer.
I have successfully added Video Podcasts to my iPod and they show up fine, play, etc.
My question is how do I get them to show up under the Video Podcasts library on the iPod? Right now, they are in the Video Playlists in a playlist I called Video Podcasts.
I haven't had a chance to change over any movies or tv shows yet to see if there would be the same problems.
I've checked in the settings in iTunes, but the options only let me change the video kind to Music Video, Movie, TV Show.
The genre on these videos say podcast.
Does anyone have a clue as to what Im doing wrong here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Okay.
Do you have room on the other partition for everything?
Do this to move it to the other partition.
    1 - Quit iTunes.
2 - Move the entire iTunes folder to where you want.
3 - Restat iTunes while holding Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac).
4 - iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library where you moved the iTunes folder.
Drag the old iTunes folder to the trash but do NOT empty it yet.
Restart iTunes and make sure it works. If so, empty the trash.

  • Suggestion: iTunes Video Podcasts

I just got a 30 GB iPod yesterday and have been playing around with video podcasts a bit. It would be much easier to find iPod formatted podcasts if they were marked with a special icon or something next to the name of the podcast in the thumbnail listing. What would be even better would be if iTunes had an option to convert all video podcasts to an iPod compatible format automatically if an option were selected.
And one more thing... The feedback page for iTunes only allows you to request songs and albums. Maybe it should allow you to submit functionality feedback as well?

When I try to play my video podcasts I'm getting the message "iTunes has stopped working".
Your Windows 7 will have been recording additional information about those ones. Fingers crossed, that'll give us a heads up about the nature of the trouble.
Head into your Action Center and look through your Problem History for iTunes problem reports generated at the time of the errors. Open them up and have a look through.
Do they seem to be saying pretty much the same thing? If so, copy the contents of a typical problem report into a reply here so we can have a look.

  • Video Podcast issue with iPod Video

    Hi
I just upgraded from 60GB photo to 80GB video and am having problems playing back some video podcasts. It plays back some but not others. The ones that don't work have audio but the video is jerky, i.e. it looks as if it is playing a still slideshow. I have checked the problem videos in iTunes and they play fine in there.
    Regards, Simon Smith

If anyone knows of an answer to this problem, I'd be grateful as well... having the same thing happen with a couple of my video podcasts as well.
    Cheers,
    Darren

  • N95 Video Podcasts and mp4 issue

Hi, I wondered if anyone could help me.
    My Loan N95 8Gb is on the 'current firmware' ( v.30.0.018 - RM320 ).
Using the podcast directory on the N95 i used to be able to play the geekbreif video podcasts (mp4 format) until recently. They are still mp4 files but it only plays the sound element. Why is this?
Background - it's the same as the highly amusing dr. cockney video podcasts. I cant play them either any more. My 'old' N95 8Gb ( currently being repaired) could play these podcasts. It's likely that my old N95 8Gb was on an older version of firmware. Surely Realplayer is realplayer and they would allow backwards compatability on mp4 files.
Also, On my current loan phone, if i download an old version of the geekbreif podcast, it works. This would imply that the website are sending out a slightly different 'type' of mp4. Surely this cant be correct, as it would not be in the 'publisher's' interest to do such a thing. (i.e. make the podcast less viewable to the masses)
    In anticipation....
    Thanks

you don't need additional tools to load the podcast or video podcast to your ipod, excepting an ipod manager like itunes, floola or juice.
Just provide the feed into the ipod manager that you use and you are done. Probably the simplest option is to go with itunes. You need an internet connection though.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcasts.html
    http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/
EDIT: Well, Juice is not really an ipod manager, but a podcast manager/receiver

  • Manually sync videos but auto sync music?

Anyone know how to do this? When I uncheck the "sync videos" command on ipod preferences, it erases all my videos from my ipod and won't let me manually drag the ones I want onto it.
If I check the "manually manage music and videos" button, it also unsyncs my music, and when I try to click the "sync music" button, it deletes all my manually added videos...
Any ideas? Videos take up lots of space on my comp, so I would like to put them on my ipod and delete them from itunes so they use up less space, but I would like my music to continue automatically updating...all help appreciated!
    Thanks!

I'm sorry, I guess I didn't fully understand your sync/delete method for videos. I'm not sure I know of a way to work around this dilemma short of manually updating your iPod.
If you have to resort to manually managing your files, you could resort to the "playlist" update option:
Try creating playlist(s) and syncing only those playlists.
Select the iPod in iTunes. Click the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and Selected playlists.
Tick the playlists you want on the iPod.
Then just Add/Delete from those playlists and plug in the iPod.
When you add a video and delete it from your library things won't get erased this way.

  • Can't get video podcasts to play on my Iphone

When I download them, they display properly in ITunes in the little video window. However, when I try playing them from my Iphone, I get audio only. What gives? Thanks for any help!
    - robjohn

This is an area where the iPhone does not work like the iPod with Video.
In my case, I create a series of playlists called "Podcasts 1 Day Ago", "Podcasts 2 Days Ago", etc. so I can sort through them in order that I added them. On the iPod, going in to Playlists-> will just play the audio for the videos in that list, but going in through Movies->Video Playlists will play audio and switch on video when it hits a video podcast. Works great.
On iPhone, this does not work. It ignores video items in the playlist, but if you manually allow the specified podcasts to sync they will show up under video. So you have to do it in multiple places, and can't just rely on a playlist like the iPod does.
    Maybe version 1.1?

  • Ipod 5 can't upload or play some of my video podcasts

I have been watching Photoshop TV and loving it. Now i want to watch TheInDesigner video podcasts but I can't get them to upload to my ipod.
I can listen to audio podcasts of this show but all the video versions are a no go. I have them loaded up on my itunes (they play fine on my computer) but they will not upload to the ipod. I have tried restarting the ipod and trying manual uploading.
Do you think that these podcasts can't be played on the 5th generation Video ipods? Is it a compatability problem?

    Yep.

  • Video Podcasts won't play

Any video podcasts on my iPod will only play sound as if it were a regular song.
Please help! I would love to be able to watch them again.
If this helps, they stopped working after I accidentally added one show to my on-the-go play list. I have reformatted and reset to factory settings twice.

After several reformats to factory settings it now works again. I wish I knew what was wrong though.

  • Video podcasts won't play after archive and install

I'm one of the folks having capture issues with FCP 4.5 and OS X 10.4.9. So I decided to archive and install to 10.4.8. Now it seems I'm having all kinds of video problems, including downloading and playing video podcasts in iTunes (7.2). When I download a podcast, say "Tiki Bar TV", the file downloads, but in the podcast screen, I get an error message which reads,
"There is a problem adding the video to iTunes. The file might be corrupted, or a file type that iTunes cannot play." For the record, I have never run into anything like this before. And it's the same way with every video podcast.
I had some similar wonkiness going on with QuickTime, too. But after I installed a divx plug-in, and flip for mac, everything seems to be okay with the QT. iTunes is still a mystery. Any ideas on what my next step should be would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

There are files that are not brought along with Archive and Install.
Some are invisible and not accessible without enabling "root" access and even then you have to know exactly which files have to be moved from the 'previous System' folder.
Archive and Install never works with Apple's Pro apps.
If Niel's suggestion doesn't work you'll have to erase your hard drive and reinstall everything making sure you first backup important data to another hard drive.

  • Older and manually-added podcasts not in iTunes 7 Podcasts

I recently upgraded to iTunes 7. For some of the older podcasts and ones that I have downloaded manually, they don't appear under the Podcasts icon in either the iTunes:Library:Podcasts or iTunes:Devices:<my iPod>:Podcasts.
All these new and old podcasts have the Podcast genre label.
However, if I create a Podcasts Smart Playlist with the genre is Podcast, I can see them all. However, I notice that in the Browser, the newer podcasts show up in the Artist mind-window as "Podcasts", while the older ones have their actual Artist listed.
What is going on here? It's really inconsistent, and I miss some of my podcasts going through the Podcast label on the top level of the iPod.
    iPod 20GB, 4G   Windows XP

I use the "Recently Added" smart playlist to find my "hidden" manually-sync'd podcasts. Let's me play them but I can't delete the darn things EVER! I'm afraid to try the suggestion about only syncing checked items cuz every time I change the syncing settings, everything gets deleted off my ipod.
Thank goodness I have the 60G so at least I have room -- for now -- for the old undeletable ipods. If I had a nano, I'd be really mad!
Has anyone figured out how to delete?

  • IWeb video Podcast won't play music on PC and crash iTunes.

I used iMovie to make a picture slideshow and added a mp3 file I got from a CD I own. I shared the slideshow to iWeb as a podcast with iLife06 and it built a page for it on my .Mac account web page. I published it and it went to the server flawlessly. I subscribed to the podcast on my Mac computer and it came into my playlist and played great. The problem came when I went to the website on my IBM PC. I at one time used it to hold the music for my iPod. I subscribed to the podcast, downloaded the slideshow to iTunes, and when I tried to play it on the PC I got a weird noise that would not stop. I had to control Alt Del to get it to stop. I am running the latest version of iTunes on both computers.

ensure that you are navigating to the video
correctly. The correct path to a video podcast on a
    5th gen ipod is /videos/video podcasts/*insert
podcast here*. I assume that you are attempting to
    access the podcasts via /music/podcasts/*insert
podcast here*. If you are accessing the podcasts
through the music menu, the podcast will show up, but
only the audio will play. If you access it through
the video menu, both the audio and the video should
    work.
