Playlists can't find musc already in iTunes Music folder

I've seen this question is many forms but can't find the answer. Here goes:
I rebuilt my Vista system and then restored my iTunes files and music. I also installed the latest iTunes version. Within iTunes I see all my songs, playlists, ratings, etc...
However, each entry has an "!" to the far left and when I try to play it I get a message that says "The song XXX could not be used because the original fine could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" If I say yes, I can go to the iTunes Music folder, find the file, and then it will work.
However this is not a viable solution for 4,341 files. My music is stored on a separate internal D: drive witch looks like D:\iTunes Music\artist name\album name\file name. It has been this way for a couple of years. The reinstalled iTunes application and related files all all in their default locations. Only the location of the music files is different than the default, but not different from when it was working just before the system rebuild.
If you go to the iTunes menu for Edit - Preferences - Advanced - General tab - "iTunes music folder location I have it set to D:\iTunes Music, just as it was before I did the system rebuild.
With these settings and folder/file structure it won't "find" any of my music. There has to be a way!! Please help!!
BTW, all music was originally imported by either (1) ripping from original CDs with "keep iTunes Music folder organized" or directly from the iTunes store.
I need to get my songs to play "without:" moving the songs or losing the playlists, information, ratings, etc. Help, there has to be a way. I just can't take the weeks or months necessary to recreate this.
Many thanks,
John

hexonxonx,
Thanks for responding to my question. I'm trying to troubleshoot an audiobook that won't download from the iTunes store. It's part one of a two part audiobook. The second part downloaded properly, along with three other audiobooks.
iTunes support has given me two sets of instructions, neither which I can carry out.
The first set is to empty the Downloads folder and then empty the trash, and the second set to to empty the cache folder. Unfortunately, I can't find either folder. I also cannot find a folder labeled with the name of the audiobook that is hung up. If you have any further advice, I'd appreciate it.

  • Can't see mp3 files in iTunes Music folder.

The artist and album folders are there under the main iTunes Music folder. They contain the album name and album images, but not the actual mp3 music files.
iTunes plays all the music fine. I just can't find the mp3 files in their folders in iTunes Music Folder.

  • Restored my Macbook Pro but my iTunes content was saved on a separate partition. When I re-setup iTunes the status bar reports 30gb less content than my iTunes Music folder. How can I find what is 'missing'?

My Macbook Pro software was failing and the Apple Store was able to restore it without removing the partition on my hard drive that contained most of my files including all my iTunes content. Initially when I re-setup my library I simply went to file--> add to library. Shortly after I realized that was essentially copying the library to the other portion of the partition because I forgot to change the location of the library. So I deleted the content already copied & then I re-setup the library, by asking it to be pulled from the previous location using this pages advice: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
It appeared to work & everything I thought was imported. But on closer inspection, it appears that I have 30gbs less appearing on the status bar in the iTunes app than I do when I pull up the info on the iTunes Music folder in my finder. I'm not sure if this means somehow I have 30gbs of duplicates in my finder folder or if (most likely) I somehow didn't fully import the library from that file. Any advice? Is there a way to restore iTunes to factory settings again & set it up correctly this time?
Also I never actually trashed the original content I accidentally transferred to the other drive but when i skimmed those in my trash bin it appears they ARE indeed in iTunes, so I have no clue what didn't actually import. Any ideas?! I'd greatly appreciate it!

You could have all the computers point to the same library but it can't be opened by more than one at any time.
No answer for knowing which library is in use other than selecting it at startup.  This question gets asked here occasionally but I don't think it is a high-demand feature since most people have just one library.  I guess you could put in an empty playlist with the library name so you have an identifier.

  • I moved my song files and now my playlists can't find them

    Here's my scenario:
I run iTunes off my laptop and stored most of my songs on an external drive. My external drive went bad, so I copied the songs off my external drive onto the laptop hard drive in a separate folder.
Now when I run iTunes and open a playlist, there are exclamations next to all the songs that used to be on the external drive but are now on the laptop drive.
I can re-locate the songs one by one, but that will be a pain for the 2000 plus songs that used to be on the external drive.
My purchased music stays on my laptop, so I have music in two different folders.
How can I re-point the playlists to the correct folder(s) without doing it song by song? I don't want to lose the playlists (i.e. I don't care about metadata like ratings, play count, etc.) I have seen the "Moving Your iTunes Music Folder" article, but I'm not sure if this applies to my situation because I already moved my song files through Explorer and not through iTunes. I want to make sure that my playlists can find the song files even though I've moved them.
    HP pavilion laptop   Windows XP

Well, I think I figured it out. My playlists were pointing to an external drive E:, which I had removed from my system. So I gave the playlists something to find: I enabled my iPod as an external disk, moved the files that I had previously removed my exHD and put them on my iPod. With my ipod connected and now acting as a new exHD, I opened itunes and hat cleared up all the exclamation points. Then I consolidated my library (in edit>preferences>advanced menu, check "keep itunes music folder organized," check "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library," then OK; in advanced menu choose "consolidate library"). That put all those songs from the exHD into the iTunes music folder. I then deleted those files from my iPod, enabled automatic update again, and now I'm back in business.
Hope that helps anyone else out there with the same problem. My advice is to keep your library all in one place. Easier to backup and restore. Also, if you want to move itunes song files, read the article "changing where your itunes files are stored" and "moving your itunes music folder."

  • Moved iTunes music folder to HDD, Now iTunes Can't Find it--Help :-)

I finally was able to get an HDD that actually mounted and now I have moved my iTunes music folder based on the instructions here: iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder. I printed them out and followed them step-by-step.
Before moving the folder iTunes Music from my internal HD (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) to the trash, I played random tracks with no problem. So I moved the folder to the trashcan, then emptied the trash as instructed. Went back to iTunes to play some music, and now all of my tracks have the dreaded exclamation point in the first column. When I click on a track to play it, I get the message "The song 'blah blah blah' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Of course, I can select 'Yes' and go through the steps and locate the files on my HDD. This, however, is not an optimal process with over 2400 songs. Does anyone know what went wrong with my relocation?

I've used that method to transfer music from one drive to another literally dozens of times and never seen it fail in the way you experienced. I'm at a loss to explain how you could have followed the instructions, successfully transfer the music to the new drive, and yet have the iTunes database still think the music should be on the original drive.
What I can suggest are two solutions: One for it you don't care about keeping your playlists, rankings, and playcounts intact. The other for if you do care.
Fast fix but loses the meta data: Quit iTunes. Open your home directory, find the music folder and open it. Trash everything you see in your music folder and restart iTunes. All your music and playlists will be gone. Open your new drive on the desktop, find the folder with your music, and drag it into your iTunes window. Your music will be imported into a new iTunes catalog and then you can create your playlists.
Keeping the metadata: After quitting iTunes, move the music back to its original location by dragging the music folder(s). Unmount the new drive and play some music. Remember the songs you clicked on and showed iTunes how to find? Do those songs all over again and once you've verified the iTunes library now points to all the songs properly, delete the songs from the new drive and repeat the steps to move them again.

First of all, you should always save you photos on computer like any other digital camera.
Backup on iCloud or iTunes only backup your Camera Roll. The other photos should be already on the computer.
Note: Photos are not saved in iTunes, it's only a conduit between your iPhone and your photo managing software on computer.
    What computer do you have?

  • How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud

How come I can't add a song to my playlists in itunes match? Is it me or itunes match? It keeps on coming up with a message " iCloud playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud music library. If you continue, the playlist will be removed from iCloud and will only be available on this computer"?
You must surely be able to add and subtract songs on specific playlist?

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

It sounds like you essentially have a new computer and unless you restored from a backup your iTunes library would be empty.  You can transfer your iTunes purchases from your iPod to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
SInce you changed syncing computers. after you move the stuff you need to restore the iPod to factory defaults and sync the stuff back to your iPod.  If you had the iPod backup file you could restore from backup.
If you have non-iTunes pruchases you can copy them to your computer by using one of the third-party programs discussed in this previous discussion:

Many thanks JEM24 for your help.  Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone  the actual cost of each additional  gigabyte of storage  to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. Many thanks again though for helping me.

  • ITunes can't find my external hard drive music

Hello, our computer crashed recently and I have restored Windows Vista and iTunes. All of our music is stored on an external hard drive (drive I). There is a main "iTunes music" folder, and then there are a ton of folders in there that are named by music artist. I went to iTunes and changed the preferences to the I drive iTunes music folder, but it will not import the music. If I go to "computer" and open the individual songs, they will play on iTunes. Please tell me I don't have to go in and click on every single song; there are thousands of them. How do I get my songs back in the iTunes library? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I'm sorry, I don't have an answer, just to be clear immediately, but I do have the same problem and I'm looking for an answer as well.
Because of a problem with the computer I had to re-install everything yesterday. Also my music is on a separate disk, not on the computer itself. I forgot to save or copy the separate iTunes-library-document, because I never use the bloody file, I only use iTunes and sometimes I copy something from the G:\-drive (with the yellow folders with the names of the artists) to the H:\-drive to back-up my music.
So my music is all there, all 60 days of music, so a h e l l of a lot, but I don't know how to get to open everything as one big action, instead of one by one which will be weeks of work. To be clear: because of the re-installment I downloaded iTunes again. The music is for sure on the G:\-drive.
I googled my problem of course, but then problems turn up like people who don't know how to install music on their iPod and stuff, but that's not what my problem is.
Just like Lauren & Mikes mom I changed in 'Preferences' the C:\-drive (the computer says C:-drive automatically) to the G:\-drive, but no action was undertaken by the computer. Of course I tried it several times. In vain.
I don't understand why I can't find the solution by googling this problem. I'm sure Lauren & Mike's mom and I aren't the only ones having this problem...
Thanks in advance for an answer.
