Please help - iTunes won't start anymore: unknown error -69

Hello out there,
please can anybody help me: all of a sudden my iTunes won't start any more - it only shows a message stating an unknown error -69 and then quits.
I did not change anything on my system before that, so I just don't know what could trigger that...
I am using iTunes 7.0.2 on Windows XP SP2, both German versions.
Before posting this question I searched the archives and tried the following, all to no avail:
1. disabled "safe mode" in QuickTime audio options -> problem remains
2. set speakers to "stereo headphones" in Windows sound options -> problem remains
3. deinstalled iTunes, downloaded the installation file again and reinstalled it -> problem remains
4. deinstalled iTunes and QuickTime, downloaded QuickTime stand-alone version, installed this and afterwards iTunes again -> problem remains
5. deinstalled iTunes and QuickTime again, deleted all iTunes and QuickTime data folders, reinstalled everything again -> problem remains
6. ran a CHKDSK an the drive iTunes is on -> no problems found
It still won't start, always giving this unknown error -69.
Please, does anybody know what to do?
Any hints and help are much appreciated!
Thanks a lot
and best regards
Frank

  • Please help:  iTunes won't import whole songs!

I have put my old hard drive (which contained all of my music) into my new computer, and added all the tracks into iTunes on the new computer. Unfortunately, some of the tracks cut off prematurely, even though the track shows the correct time (it just goes right to the next track instead of running completely through). Short of manually importing each CD back into iTunes, I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

Hi thanks. I have try'd installing an older version off a disk that i've got but it get a message telling me it is not possible to install an older version. Will i have to remove the current one 1st? an if so how do i do it like i said i'm a bit off a novice? do i just drag it in to the trash?
    Thanks

  • ITunes won't start up, no error message, appears in task manager

    Hi,
I have been running this system since quite a while and haven't had problems with iTunes for a while. I updated to the recent version not to long ago and it worked then once or twice, I even bought a game for the iPod (Tetris)...
Now iTunes doesn't start up anymore. I haven't installed anything new and I am virus free.
I try to launch iTunes and but the UI will not appear. I can see that it's loaded (or stuck somewhere) as the application is in the processes tab in the task manager and doesn't disappear.
Obviously I did the usual: curse a lot, removing everything incl. any traces of quicktime and itunes in the reg, 'application data' folders, the mysterious 'My Music' directory in my docs, reinstalling different versions of iTunes and quicktime, running hijack-this to see what processes I can't recognise, curse even more (**** MS monopoly) and reading a lot on the net and on this particular website.
There are holes in my firewall to accomodate iTunes. I use Sophos anti-virus software (not becasue I chose too).
Is there anything you could recommend?
Reinstalling windows is really not an option here, as I use this computer for work too.
I also use Linux on a seperate partition (Fedora 7), but I know that there were issues with iPod support on Linux and it once broke the whole **** database. Maybe Apple can one day release some software for Linux users? Afterall OS X is just a unix based OS anyways...
Please help, I wasted so much time on this already

    Hi, dengar.
Let's try to get an idea of what might be going on by running through b noir's "smack" for iTunes launch failures.
Based on your original post, I'm going to bypass some of the preliminary questions and make the following assumptions - if any of these assumptions are wrong, post back and we'll follow a different path.
    Assumptions -
    1) There is no error message associated with your iTunes launch failure.
    2) QuickTime itself launches on your computer without any problems.
    3) When you reboot your computer and attempt to launch iTunes, iTunes.exe appears and remains in the Processes list.
If those assumptions are all true, I'd refer you to this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.

  • Itunes won't start anymore

my itunes worked fine yesterday yet today it won't open, everytime i try to open it, it says The instruction at "0x10001040" referenced memory at "0x10001040". The memory could not be "read". i have restarted my computer, i have reinstalled itunes, then restarted again, and i have also done a virus scan. if anyone can help me, i'd greatly appreciate it.

ok, nevermind i fixed it myself, anyone experiencing similar problems this may be relevant. my problem was caused by media player clasic which i downloaded because of the codecs it contains, i hadn't had any problems until now because i moved the folder containing media player classic into My Documents, for reasons that i can not explain this cause itunes to malfunction, media play classic has a built in quicktime substitute so i'm sure that had something to do with it, anyways i moved the folder back to the desktop, put a media player classic shortcut back into the folder and clicked itunes which now successfully started. Hopefully that will help at least some people out there.

  • Please help--iMac won't start up

My daughter has an iMac G4 flat panel (OS X 10.4.8), and a serious problem. I've been trying to help her but have run out of ideas. She recently downloaded and installed some updates. After installation, she clicked the restart button, but only got a blue screen with the beach ball appearing (apparently not steadily, but kind of intermittently). She turned it off and tried to restart several times and got the same thing. Then, she tried to start up from the disk. I'm not too clear what happened at this point. But she did manage to repair permissions. But this didn't help. Then, she tried to repair disk, but the computer told her she couldn't do that (I'm not sure why). Finally, she reinstalled OS X. Upon doing that, all she gets is a blue screed with a box containing her name and two buttons--quit and restart. She has tried to restart many times, but just comes back to the box with the the two buttons. I have been trying to help her over the phone (she's in MD and I'm in WI). So, having not witnessed any of this first-hand, I can't be much clearer about the situation. Obviously, one possibility is going to the Apple Store. But she really can't afford that. Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thank you,
    Carl Kalwaitis

    Hi Supreme D,
    first check your internal battery.
With your computer you have to keep a certain order of installations.
    1. Backup!
    2. Boot up from the 9.2.2 install CD and reformat the hard disk (this is important because you need a bootable OS 9 for the firmware upgrade)
    3. Install OS 9.
    4. Make sure you can boot into OS 9!
    5. Upgrade your firmware: Mac OS X: Chart of Available Firmware Updates
    6. Insert the 10.4 install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key
    7. Once the installer has started and you selected your language select "Disk Utility" from the MENU
    8. Repair the disk and select "repair OS 9 privilegies" from the MENU
    9. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation of MacOS X
    10. After the restart Repair permissions!
    11. Download and apply the standalone Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC)
    12. Repair permissions again.
    13. Run software update from the Apple menu and apply all available updates.
    Good luck!

  • Please help. iTunes Won't Save My Album Artwork

OK, here’s a basic question that will probable be easy to answer. I have iTunes 8 on a MAC 10.4.11 and it won’t save my album artwork. I have a play list of 23 songs and for some reason track 21 and 22 keep rejecting the artwork I drag and drop. I have tried adding the image as both a JPG and PNG in various sizes and resolutions.

Patience! You just posted the original 30 minutes before your follow up. Give people time to find your post. Anyway...
All you did is changed the preference so that any NEW stuff you import will look up artwork. For any albums already in your library, select all the songs from the album, right click, and pick Get Album Artwork.

  • Please help - iTunes won't backup!!!!!!!

    Hello, all...can you help me?
I have iTunes 7.3.1 (I'm pretty sure) and when I tried to backup my library, it tells me to insert a blank disk...so I do. Then, it says "burn initializing" for a couple of seconds up at the top of iTunes (where the "Now Playing" displays) and then tells me to insert a blank disk. It's a continuous cycle.
Can anyone help me, or at least let me know where I can get iTunes 7.1? That was the only version that worked on my computer.

Do you have any older backups, or was that the only one. While iTunes will overwrite regular backups that are done, if you have done a restore in the past, those are kept with a date/time stamp. If one isn't too old, you can try that, but remember that anything done since that date/time would be lost.
The only other alternative is to restore the device as new and sync whatever data you can back from the computer.

  • ITunes won't start anymore in Windows 8

i just loaded windows 8 and my iTunes was working just fine and then it wasn't. Anyone having the same issues?

    tnbarlow wrote:
that is a shame. ... early adopters bleed again.... so i guess it is an Apple issue as it worked then update then nada.
Hhhmmm! So which bit of "it's not yet supported" do you not understand?
Although the definition of an early adopter is open to dispute, it is fairly obvious that that's the price you pay for being an early adopter - especially if you insist on adopting before the product is actually supported.
I guess - no I think - that the issue is yours, not Apple's They have given no undertaking yet, to support Windows 8 but you go ahead anyway.
And then you complain about it.
It's not that I'm unsympathetic, but it's a bit much that effectively, you were asked to wait, you ignore that, and then try to hold Apple responsible. Perhaps, next time, a little patience might be in order.

  • ITunes won't start after upgrade--error message

When I launched iTunes after upgrading to 6.0.1, I got the following message after agreeing to the usual legal terms:
"The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder."
    Any suggestions?

    Jeff,
Thank you for the reply and your suggestions.
Yes, I did take a look in the Music folder--and no, the file was not there. I then used Spotlight and did find an iTunes Music folder, but when I tried to copy it to the Music folder I got error message -36, saying that parts of the file weren't readable and, therefore, not copyable.
I also used my disk utility to repair permissions and re started the computer---with the same results.
I'm not sure what else to try and may take my computer to my local expert.

  • ITunes won't start.  No error, no message.  I've already tried everything suggested.  Anyone else?

I've tried uninstalling everything iTunes/Apple related.  New computer, it worked for a while then just stopped.  Nothing happens when I try to open iTunes from programs, from desktop, by plugging in my iPod.  Nada.

  • Itunes won't start-says it has to shut down

i started having problems with itunes and downlaoded the new itunes. won't start. in the error report it sayd its a compatability issue. when i send the report to ms though, they claim it to be an itunes problem. i could use a lot of help.

+when i tried to start quicktime it produced the same message as itunes with a little change to it. in the last part of the code it was 1482appcomp.txt.+
That problem will be causing the iTunes problem.
So let's try swapping out your existing QuickTime for a fresh copy.
Head into your Add/Remove programs. Uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer.
Next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
Go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. Does it launch properly now?
(If, however, you get an error message on any of the install or uninstalls, let us know what that message says. Precise text, please. Include any error message numbers if you're getting any.)

Re: error 4002 in itunes match do you have a solution?

    Hi All,
I had this problem today myself, and was frustrated repeatedly by the '4002' error.
I have literally just fixed the issue by doing the following steps:
1: Go to the 'Store' tab and select 'Turn Off iTunes Match'
2: Return to the 'Store' tab and select 'Update Genius'
3: Wait for this to complete succesfully, the return to the 'Store' tab once more and select 'Turn On iTunes Match'.
4: iTunes Match will now go through the motions and should succeed!
    I hope this helps
