Please help me!! My Power Mac G5 is stuck at the grey apple logo screen and nothing is working!

My computer froze a few weeks ago and I got a grey screen that told me I needed to restart the computer.  When I restarted, the computer froze on the grey screen with the apple logo. No pin wheel. Nothing. Eventually the fan begins running at warp speed.  I've scoured this discussion board for a solution and I've read every possible thing I can find on the Internet regarding this issue.  Nothing is helping.  I've tried reseating memory, resetting PRAM, I replaced the PRAM battery, all the standard stuff on the message boards. I can't run a disk, i cant boot from a disk holding down c, but I can hold down the option key to open the hardware test, I've done the extended and short test and passed both.
When I hold the shift+command+v it tells me-
com.apple.driver.appleintelcpupowermanagement isn't a valid Mach-o (magic is cefaedfe)
Error mapping module file com.apple.driver.appleintelcpupowermanagement
Can't map com.apple.driver.appleintelcpupowermanagement in preparation for loading
Can't determine dependencies " "
Can't alloc class " " blah blah blah
I'm pretty sure this is some sort of kernel panic. This computer has been pretty much trouble free in the 8 years I've owned it.  I had recently upgraded iLife to iLife 07 before the trouble happened.
I've also been able to get it to boot once or twice since then. I get a message that says" the computer was shut down blah blah do you want to send a report to apple?" I'm able to do some basic stuff like back up some pictures onto my external hard drive and then it will freeze again and the fan will come on. While I had access to the desktop I checked the disk repair permissions and they were all messed up.  I tried repairing permissions but I don't think it worked.  Also the time and date was messed up which made me think it was a battery thing.   Lately I haven't been able to boot at all past the apple screen.  I don't have much money but I have to get this fixed!
Some specs--
Power mac g5
CPU @1702037.8 ghz
Boot rom version 5.2.4f1
Memory 8 gb, 400mhz
Pmu/fcu versions:127/6.0.1 f0
Running OSX 10.5.6
Just to be clear this is the power pc from around early 2005, not the intel based g5, not the water cooled one, and not a Mac Pro!
Please help me!!

HI, have you blown the dust out lately?
Does it boot better/further if allowed to cool?
If you're sure the RAM is good, try the Hair Dryer trick...

The Macbook Pro 13, late 2009 will not start past the grey Apple Logo screen?  Any help will be most welcome? Thanks

Have you tried booting with the install disc that came with your computer?
Find it and then run Disk Utility to verify your hard drive. If errors are found, try to repair the disk.
It sounds as if the hard drive might be failing.

  • PowerPC Mac Mini gets stuck at grey apple logo screen, wont start

I have a bit of a problem and would appreciate some help, im not especially good at this stuff.
My Powerpc Mac Mini froze up recently, having left it on for a few days without shutting down/resetting. I impatiently turned it off with the power button at the back. When I turned it on again, it only got as far as the grey apple logo screen, it now refuses to go past this screen despite numerous power resets, and unplugging at the power.
I have reset the PMU and the PRAM as suggested by the troubleshooting, to no avail - the PRAM did work as it changed the resolution of the apple logo, but still got stuck at the grey startup screen. Its out of warranty so I have to pay for technical support. Can anyone help?

If you have the original install disk that came with your mini, the first thing to do is to insert that, and then boot the system holding the C key down. This should force it to boot from the install disk rather than the internal drive. The reason you want to do this is two-fold: firstly that if it boots OK that way, it shows the basic hardware is OK, and secondly, it's possible that the hard drive has developed errors (likely directory damage) and the tool to check for that and attempt to resolve it is on the install disk.
Once you've got the system booted to the install disk, exit the installer and run the Disk Utility application. That should display the internal drive (and the install disk) on the left. Select the internal drive and then click 'Repair Disk'. If no errors are found, the drive is fine and the problem lies elsewhere. If errors are reported and the disk is fixed, then you should be able to reboot normally afterwards. If errors are found and Disk Utility reports 'error on exit' not having fixed them, then run it again just to be sure, but otherwise it means the drive is damaged sufficiently that Disk Utility can't fix it. A third-party application such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior will then be needed if you want to try and fix the drive and recover data, or you can simply elect to do an erase and install, meaning the drive will be reformatted and a new copy of MacOS installed. Do not do this if you have data you need to get off the drive!!

  • Mac stuck on the grey apple screen startup? Follow these steps to re-boot....

So today I had a little scare with my Macbook. It was stuck on the grey apple startup screen with the loading icon. Switching it on and off did nothing and neither did waiting. I did a lot of browsing to try and find a solution but all the forums ended in 'looks like thats the end of my mac' or 'I think i've lost everything' or 're-install Os' blah blah etc. I DID NOT WANT TO LOSE ANYTHING!!! and I'm guessing neither do you! Ok so enough talking, in the end I found a solution which worked perfectly for me and I did not lose anything!!!!!:
    Step 1
If the Mac is on switch it off.
Once it is off, switch it on again but this time as soon as you press the power button to switch it on, hold down the Apple cmd key + S.
Hold this down untill the 'safe boot' screen appears.
A black screen with white writing should now come up.
    Step 2
Once the screen has loaded, at the bottom type:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    [press enter]
    then type:
    chmod 775 /
    [press enter]
    then type:
    exit
this re-boots the mac. As soon as you have done this the mac should load up again as normal!! Voila!!!
    Hope it helps!

Someone suggested this to be risky. worked for me but DON'T DO IT WITHOUT RESEARCHING FIRST and if in doubt CALL APPLE!!!!!

  • My Ipad is stuck on the connect to itunes screen and I cannot get it to work even when I connect to itunes. I have tried switching it off and plugging it in while the home button and on button are switched but nothing works.  Please help me.

My Ipad is stuck on the connect to iTunes screen, I have tried plugging into iTunes but it makes the necessary noise but the computer does not recognise it and nothing alters on the Ipad screen. Have tried various computers and leads and it still does not work.  Have also tried the switching off, plugging in to computer and turning on again using the on button and then the home button but nothing works.  This happened while I was downloading software update.   Please help me.

I suggested several things to GeekyNerdGirl in her first post here. Take a look.
My iPad is in what seems like permanent restore mode after iOS 7.2 update?
It can take more than a few attempts before Recovery Mode will work and you have to follow the steps exactly. DFU mode is even harder to perform correctly beside of the 10 second hold. Don't stop trying. Eventually one of these methods could work for you.

  • Radeon 5770 in 2008 Mac Pro, won't boot - hangs at Apple logo screen??

Okay, so I had the Radeon 2600 XT and it kept giving me issues with pink & white checkerboards and freezing, then eventually wouldn't let me boot past the white/grey apple logo loading screen. Now, today I installed Apple Radeon 5770, just installed, got the MiniDisplay to DVI-D adapter and everything, but it STILL won't let me get past the white/grey apple screen! I can't seem to get the DVD drive to open either. Both of my hard drives have been working fine and I've even swapped slots and i still can't get past the white screen! What gives? I just dropped over $300 for this, so you can imagine my dismay and frustration. Can someone please help me with some ideas? Would be GREATLY appreciated.
    It's a 2008 Mac Pro dual 2.8Ghz (3,1), running 10.5.8
    M

Yeah, ok thanks for the response about the screen! So, I don't have 10.6.5. I'm running 10.5.8, which the Radeon 5770 says it needs 10.6.5, but -finally- I got my computer to boot up with the 5770 in it, on 10.5. Al I did was hold OPTION+ Power button and it took me to a blue screen, then to my 500 GB new HD. I then switched over to my other username on Macintosh HD (drive that came with the MacPro) and OSX loads fine! I can tell that it still needs to be on 10.6.5, so I can download the drivers because the text is ever so slightly fuzzy, and the color isn't tuned well (too much contrast) and images take a little longer to load/ are a bit laggy. I'm just glad it's up and running! No more pink transparent checkerboards, and loud *** fan sounds! I am wondering though, what was causing this hold up? Is it only booting up because I have the 10.5.2 install disc in the SuperDrive? I almost don't want to take it out and try without it, after the trouble i've had, just in case lol.  I'd like to have an idea as to why, because I don't want to mask a problem, and have it eventually turn into a catastrophe.

  • Hey my windows 7 computer doesn't recognize my ipod? and my  ipod is stuck in the connect to itunes screen and is low battery but doesn't want to charge? help

    Plese help?
First my ipod didnt show it was charging but still turned on(it was dead) so i tried the hold sleep and wake button but my computer(windows 7) wont recognize it so its stuck on the connect to itunes screen.
PS i took it to get it fixed and they said they changed the battery not sure if that had anything to do with it????
    please help and Thank You.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector for bend or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • Continue to receive error 1604 and can't use the recover function - help!  I have gone through all the steps listed in support and nothing has worked.  I am using a usb port I tested with my printer cable and it's fine.

I wanted to update my software this morning and it has turned into a nightmare.  I continue to receive the error 1604, which is related to a usb port.  I followed all the steps listed in support and nothing has helped.  I just plugged in my printer cable to the usb port and it works fine, yet I continue to receive this error and can't use my phone!

A printer does not require power, and does not transfer large amounts of data. So that is not a valid test. It's like saying "if I plug a nightlight into an outlet it works fine, so why do 2 hair dryers on at the same time trip a circuit breaker?"
Are you using a port directly on the computer, and not a hub? If it's not a laptop and it has ports on front and back are you using a back port, which can supply more power?
Have you EVER used this computer to hack or jailbreak ANY iPhone (not necessarily the one with the problem? Or used a program to downgrade the version of iOS on any phone?

  • Mac Pro gets stuck on the grey screen and won't finish booting

I have a Mac Pro 1, 1 recently (successfully) upgraded to snow leopard that gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning rainbow cursor (after the apple logo and brief blue screen) and won't finish booting up. This happened after my computer froze up and I had to force quit.  I checked out the forums and I tried all the all the suggestions (like disconnecting peripherals) and appropriate disk utilities, saw no errors with the HD reported, and had no trouble doing a safe boot  (everything works o.k. there) or starting up from the software disk to perform the repairs.  I did notice that during the repair permissions command, it gets stuck in the last few minutes, the CD starts to chug along, and everything freezes and I have to force quit.  This happens every time I try it.  I eventually backed everything up, erased the HD and reinstalled the OS, reset PRAM and NVRAM, but I'm still getting the grey screen on restart.  Tech tool deluxe reports a "fail" on the video RAM, but everything else seems to check out.  Could it be a graphics card issue?   I did notice some funky visual glitches occurring prior to the breakdown.  Any other ideas?

I wouldn't trust Apple Disk Utility to do a hard drive repair, but I would go with TechTool Pro 5/6 if you have that instead of Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
Clone the drive, though you should have some bootable backup clones already; repair the clone; then boot and work from that drive. Always have a working copy of the system.
And off load all your data to other drives.

  • IMac G5 Power PC won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel

After everything froze and having to shut down (holding the power button), it won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel. After a few seconds, the fans speed up and then nothing else.
*it won't boot into safe mode (holding shift)
*booting to OS on DVD works but then freezes after select language and hit "continue"
*disk utility shows the actual hard drive name but no disk image/partition is listed for me to repair or change
*running the system hardware diagnostic CD returns a list of "passed" for all hardware
I did have the logic board replaced during the extended warranty period a few years back and have not had any issues at all since.
    Any thoughts, suggestions, tricks/tips?

Perfect diagnosis. I replaced the HD and reinstalled the OS. Back in business! Thanks!
