Plugging in USB on 20" iMac G5

Love new iMac but who put everything on the back??? I was plugging in a USB jump drive and in the process of turning computer around, I unplugged the power cord going into computer loosing an hour's work.
Is there a product hug or something that makes USB connections more accessible?
Thanks

Darren, I like your 2nd suggestion better... / :-O Actually I cannot imagine how by plugging and unplugging a USB drive can actually "rip" the power cord out of the iMac? On iMac's end or from the wall end? The power cord plug actually tugs quite tightly fit into the back of the iMac, and in my region we have the 3-pin power plug, you need to yank the plug out to get it out, lifting the power cord won't do the trick...
Cheers

  • IMac will not boot up when printer is plugged in USB

After buying my new iMac (with Tiger) I successfully transfered everything from my old iMac (with Panther) and all was well.
The problem is that when my printer (Canon Pixma MP130) is plugged in on start up, the iMac will not boot up (no gears turning on the white/grey screen). When I unplug the printer from the USB and start it up, it works fine. Its not a super big deal because I can just plug the printer in when I need it. But why does it do this?
I foound on the internet someone else who had the same issues. It was suggested to him to search the printer manufacturers website for updated drivers. I did this, installed them etc..... still no luck.

    Hello there,
I hope it is OK to recycle this old thread.  I did not want to create a new one since I am experiencing the exact same issue as the original poster *flying girl* as well as other posters in the following threads:

I have two Macs, a PowerBook G4 and an Intel iMac 20" (Aluminum)--please refer to my signature or profile for the specs of these machines.  Of course, I got the PowerBook before I got the iMac.  I am running the latest version of the Canon MP130 drivers, printer drivers version 4.8.3 and scanner drivers version 12.11.0, on both machines.
When I turn on my PowerBook with the Canon PIXMA MP130 multifunction turned ON and connected via USB to the PowerBook, the PowerBook boots up just fine.  I have even experimented with both a USB hub and a direct connection to the Canon MP130, and the PowerBook boots fine in both instances.
However, when I turn on my iMac with the Canon MP130 turned ON and connected via USB to the iMac, the startup tone plays, and then the iMac hangs at the blue/gray solid screen--it does not even show the Apple logo or the spokes--that is, until I turn the Canon MP130 OFF.  When I turn it off, the Apple logo appears, the spokes move, and my iMac boots up just fine.  And as long as the MP130 is OFF, I can boot the iMac fine from scratch too.
I tried starting in verbose mode (⌘V) and single-user mode (⌘S), and the gray/blue screen still appears after the startup tone plays; again, if I turn the Canon MP130 OFF, the rest of the boot sequence resumes as normal, and only then do I get to see the descriptive text for those startup modes.  But the text goes by so fast that I miss most of it--I did manage to catch something that said something like "get full config descriptor = NULL," but I am not sure if that was the exact wording.  I would need a good camcorder or even just a digital camera or another device to capture exactly what the screen says in verbose mode.  If I had those options, I would post pictures here.
I was thinking about contacting Canon, but since the issue happens on one Mac only, I figured they would tell me that it is a problem with my Mac.  So hopefully posting the information here is OK.
Another key feature is that the Canon MP130 has a built-in card reader.  I made sure that my Startup Disk preferences were set to boot from the system drive, and they still are.  And I have reset the SMC and PRAM on the iMac.
I would like to mention the following link:
    http://www.ehmac.ca/anything-mac/50389-intel-imac-wont-boot-when-canon-printer-p lugged.html
If you go to page 2 on that above thread, it shows one user who allegedly physically disconnected the card reader connection from the inside of the Canon MP130 (I would NOT recommend that myself).  I just wonder if there is a more feasible resolution to this issue.
Does anyone else experience the same issue with other printers or multifunctions?  Also, why does the issue occur only on my Intel iMac 20" (aluminum), and NOT on my PowerBook G4?
Please let us know about your experience as it seems many of us are at a loss for a solution.
Thank you very much for your help; we await!  :)
    Cya!

When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

On the phone, under Settings > iCloud you can select to turn iCloud ON or OFF.
One iTunes, it senses that toggle and if you had selected iCloud it will say backup to iCloud. Here you can change the toggle to backup to computer and click "Apply" prior to syncing.
I do both for good measure. I backup to computer and then after i disengage the device from the computer, I set the iCloud toggle back to ON and then perform the iCloud backup over wifi.
I found that using iTunes and saying to backup to iCloud isn't always successful in the "last backed up" time and thus I do it separately.

  • I have a new iPad Air. Can I use plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak. I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity to have everything on that I'd like for the kids

Can I use a plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak? I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity on the iPad to have everything on that I'd like for the kids.
So basically I want a hard drive with X amount of films etc on. Can I then watch them on my iPad?
    Hope this makes sense.

    External HDD won't work.

With that behavior you need to take the iPhone to an Apple store genius bar for an out-of-warranty replacement.  In the US that is $269 for the iPhone 5.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • I have an airport extreme which doesn't come with a straight audio jack on it like the express. Can I get a converter to go from the dual speaker plugs to usb on the extreme?

Sorry, but no. The only Apple router with an audio output jack is the AirPort Express.

I got a usb charger for my 4th gen Ipod touch that at first allowed my to charge and transfer music from my laptop to the Ipod now nothing happens when I plug the usb cord and Ipod into my laptop. Its mac so it is an apple system. I am wondering how I can fix this problem I am not very good with techy stuff so this is very confusing how it was working and it just stopped.

    Hi johnsmiff99,
That is never fun when your iPod touch does not show up on your Mac. Take a look at the article below to walk you through on getting it to show back up on your iTunes. It is very easy to read so you wont feel overwhelmed with to much techy jargon. Let me know if you get this worked out.
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac

  • Had operational Goflex - plugged in USB WD MyBook, cannot boot & no IP

    Hello Archers!
    Situation;
Arch Linux Seagate Goflex Home (SG-GFH) was fully operational but now not getting IP address after plugging in USB Western Digital My Book Essentials (USB-WD-MBE) and restarting.
    Environment;
    1 NetGear WND3700 v2 router.
1 Laptop computer running Ubuntu Linux 12.04 .
1 Seagate GoFlex Home (SG-GFH) with Arch Linux) connected directly to router.
1 USB Western Digital My Book Esstentials (USB-WD-MBE)
    Events;
Recently installed Arch Linux on SG-GFH.
Setup 3 partitions - 1st partition for system, 2nd for swap and 3rd for data.
Create mount point for 3rd partition.
    Setup NFS.
Installed some additional packages, Webmin, etc.
Everything seemed to be working fine.
    Connected USB-WD-MBE to laptop.
Used Filezilla to successfully copy 150 GBs of data from laptop with USB-WD-MBE to the SG-GFH. Transfer rate was very slow.
To see if I could get better transfer speed I plugged in the USB-WD-MBE into the USB port on the SG-GFH.
I verified that the SG-GFH was seeing the USB-WD-MBE (/dev/sdc). I did not setup any mount points or modify fstab, etc.
I restarted the SG-GFH with the USB-WD-MBE plugged in and now not getting IP address.
So, I shutdown everything and powered up again, still no ip.
Then, I disconnected the USB-WD-MBE and powered up, still no ip.
I shutdown everything again and pulled the disk from the SG-GFH.
I placed a bootable USB (SanDisz Cruiser) into USP port on SG-GFH.
Upon restart, I could see that the router assigned 192.168.1.2 to the device named "ALARM".
I can ping successfully 192.168.1.2 *** BUT *** I cannot ssh into it "Connection refused".
    $ ssh -v [email protected]
    OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1.1, OpenSSL 1.0.1 14 Mar 2012
    debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
    debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 19: Applying options for *
    debug1: Connecting to 192.168.1.2 [192.168.1.2] port 22.
debug1: connect to address 192.168.1.2 port 22: Connection refused
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.2 port 22: Connection refused
Ran port scan (Network Tools) nothing returned.
So what can I do. Is it possible to get it back?
I am not sure if the USB-WD-MBE had anything to do with this.
I cannot ssh in and not even sure if I can do a complete re-install.
    Any assistance much appreciated!

Frustrated but determined, I decided to try one more time with Arch Linux. I went ahead and *** re-created *** another bootable USB with Arch Linux on it and this time the SG-GFH booted up with IP and I can ssh into it! Something must have happened to my other USB with Arch Linux on it. With the original bootable USB/Arch Linux that I created I could get an IP address but *** could not ssh (connection refused) ***, weird!!!
After booting up with the new bootable USB/Arch Linux, I placed the SATA drive in the craddle and mounted the partitions on sdb and they all (sdb1 - system, sdb2 - swap, sdb3 - large partition for data) appear normal.
    THE PROBLEM
I want to be able to boot like before.
I want to boot using Arch Linux with the SATA drive in the craddle. I do not want to boot with the USB/Flash/Arch Linux.
    How can I accomplish this?
    REVIEW
Currently, the boot flag is set on the existing sdb1 partiton. But, if I remove the bootable USB/Arch Linux and starting with the SATA drive in the craddle (SATA now becomes sda1) is the same as it was before, have a green light but no IP.
If I use the bootable USB/Arch Linux I get IP, can ssh and see the existing partitons on the SATA drive.
    Any tips greatly appreciated!

Are you connecting your iPhone directly to your PC or to a USB hub?

  • Why wont my phone charge when i plug the usb into my laptop?, Why wont my phone charge when i plug the usb into my laptop?

why wont my phone charge when i plug my usb into my macbook air?

Most USB ports can't supply the power required to charge a phone.
The original USB port was limited to 0.5 amps at 5 volts which is 2.5 watts.
Your phone probably has a 10 watt charger.
Recent machines allow more power from the USB port but I doubt they allow 2 amps which is what would be required to get 10 watts.  Even if they did a 2 amp draw is going to be a heavy load on the MBA battery.

When you connect your iPad or iPod to the Mac, click on the device name in iTunes - don't click on the arrow on the device. Then click on the Music tab in the main window pane. Now you should see 'Sync Music' and all your playlists, artists and albums. Here you mark the checkboxes for what should be synced.

  • Is there an easier way to transfer your iTunes library on windows to a mac than copying the library to a usb and plugging the usb into the mac and put the library in the iTunes file

is there an easier way to transfer your iTunes library on windows to a mac than copying the library to a usb and plugging the usb into the mac and put the library in the iTunes file? I recently swapped to Mac and this is how i moved the library from windows to mac and library is in tact but is there an easier way? My cousin just imported her cd's again, but it was harder for me as i have an ipod with over 150 apps and i needed to move them. i think it would be helpful if i knew of an easier way so i can help a friend move his. Thanks

The general method of use is to download a script (double-click or right-click and use Download or Save As...) to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist or sometimes the entire library.
