Poor export quality Aperture 3

I've been searching all over the internet and can't seem to find any answers in regards to export quality in Aperture 3. When I finish editing an image and I export it in either TIFF, JPEG or PNG all of them look the same regardless of if I change DPI, File size etc and none of them look even close to as detailed as the original. I'm exporting "version" and changing the options in presets with no luck.
Can someone help me? I can't accept the poor quality of the exported images as they make my portraits look fuzzy and not sharp (when they're very sharp and vivid in Aperture!). Is it possible to get the same quality in an exported image as I see in Aperture. It seems like it should be a no brainer!

I had the same problem. While in a One-to One the Creative told me to do this. What ever you are planning to export the file/files to have pluged in (flash drive, hard drive) or loaded (DVD/CD) before you start the process.
Chose the file or files by highlighting them then choose File - Export - Version. In the center of the window that will pop up there is a "Export Preset"" tab. He told me to choose TIFF- Original Size (8-bit). He did say that any higher than 8 bit is pointless. I did this and it worked great. I had a large beautiful file that I was blowing up to 30 by 20 and it looked so bad printed before I learned this trick. I printed it again after exporting the new way and it really looked great!
I hope this solves your problem, it was VERY frustrating for me also.

FCP 6: poor export quality in mp4

Hello, I have a Final Cut Pro 6 project, 90 minutes.
It is a multiclip project: 2 little minidv tapes of a live concert of my band.
I have done all the editing and I have just exported the project in mpeg4. This is not the first time, I have done this 4 or 5 times in the past and everything was OK. This time instead I have bad quality at every camera change: at every change, the image starts all pixelated, than after some frames, the quality is back to 100%.
It seems a key-frame issue... but I am not expert.
Here are the export setting:
- File Format: MP4
- Video Format: H.264
- Data Rate: 4500 Kbit/sec
- Image Size: 768 x 576 SD
- Frame Rate: Current
- Key Frame: Automatic
In The "Video Options" tab: Profile "Main" is the only checked, and encoding mode is "faster".
Again, I believe I have always used this settings, so I cannot understand what is the problem this time.

I tried to use Compressor (never used it: I am quite new to video editing in FCP, I used iMovie).
The result is OK, I mean there are no big-pixel frames. I have just some questions for you: as you can see from the pic here:

- I choose constant bit rate, but I cannot set it higher than 2048. In FCP I could set the bit rate much higher (I used 3000 or even 4000 kbps).
- auto key frame is not allowed from what I see
- as regard the frame rate: is the frame rate of the FCP project the one I found in:
sequence menu -> settings -> editing time base ???
- last: in FCP I exported as mpeg4 with H264. Here from what I see, H264 are totally different codecs, isn't it?

Poor export quality from imovie to idvd

Can someone help me. I have perfect photos with iphoto, transfer them to imovie (still clear), but when i finally send them to idvd and create my movie, all of my photos get digitalized. I've checked all 3 programs, and they all appear to be set at the highest quality. Is there a way to create a dvd with the same quality of photos that I have with my other programs?

Poor sound quality in timeline and export; fine in Source?

Hello all.
Newbie to Pr but experienced pro in digital audio. I'm stumped and know I'm just missing something somewhere.
I've made a music video for one of my songs. The graphics are all done (in AE), imported to Pr and eveything looks great. I import the final mix of the audio and it sounds very low quality when played from the timeline and in the final output, regardless of format (I've tried several presets and custom settings as well). I played around and noticed that the audio sounds fine when played from the Source window inside Premier.
The Pr session is comrised of 18 video tracks (not all playing at once, of course) and one stereo audio track.
I've tried re-exporting the audio from Logic at different bit depths, sample rates and file formats (mp3, wav, AAC, etc) but the results are the same every time: Source (Pr)sounds fine, Logic output sounds fine, rendered / timeline playback sounds like very low quality mp3 and final product sounds just as bad.
I've tried everything I can think of. I hope one of you can show me what I'm missing.

I was experiencing the same results no matter what export settings I used. Plus the poor sound quality was present in the timeline itself, without even exporting the project.
I finally threw my hands up, started a completely new project, drug the same audio file in... sounded fine. Copied / Pasted the video clips from the original, broken project and boom, eveything is fixed. Yeah, corrupted Pr file it turns out. All I had to do was start a new project and import all the old components.
I've had to do this in Logic a lot (increasingly, these days). I just wish I'd tried it 10 hours earlier! Ha.
Anyway, problem solved, and thanks very much!

Aperture Light Table - Poor image quality

I am using the Light Table function in Aperture (3.4.5.) and I had an issue with the quality of the images on it, when zoomed in or scaled to fit.
The quality of the (larger spread) images looks poor. As if I zoomed in on a thumbnail.
I was looking for a discussion on this and saw some (archived) threads. None of them solved.
However, I think I have found a workaround.
If you get this situation, you can select the image(s) on the light table and regenerate the preview.
Option-click Menu => Photos => Generate Previews
(note: if you don't use the Option key, you will get Menu => Photos => Update Previews and Aperture may say (unjust) that the preview is already up-to-date).
That solves the poor image quality look.

I just remade the same book - as a test - in the extra large hardback format (ie. the one I used for the previous publication, last year).
This time, the pictures are fine. The images appear to be the same quality in the PDF as the originals - much, much better. The size of the file has increased massively too > up from just 2.6MB to 52.8MB.
So does the books production function work well only with the biggest, most expensive option?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's tried the different sizes, and preferably some brilliant ideas to make them all work equally well.

Using Premiere Pro CS3 When exporting as flash file poor picture quality

I'm using Premiere Pro CS3. I shoot green screen in HDV and work in 1440 x 1080. I have been capturing files in Premiere and sending them to Serious Magic Ulta 2. I use this program for keying and adding virtual backgrounds. I save these files as avi. with a resolution of 1440 X 1080. I then bring them back into Premiere Pro for final edit. When I export these video's encoded as mpeg2 theyplay very clear. I am now trying to export as flv. with alpha channel background and the resolution is poor. I working on the transparent background with walk on spokespersons that overlay the HTML page. When In try to play them on my computer the adobe media player is what comes up. I have downloaded flash player but it doesn't select it to play the video. I'm running windows Vista Business platform. What am I doing wrong.

The capture and editing have already been done in 1440 X 1080. Should I use this resolution rather than trying to bump it up to 1920 X 1080.

Computer playback generally prefers square pixels. Make sure to set your output resolution to 1920 x 1080 using a Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) of 1.0 or Square.

I have very poor video quality after transcoding the video file (MPEG) in Adobe Encore CS5.1. Below you see my used settings in my filmproject.
The problem exists after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1. I checked all steps and found out that there is no problem until transcoding. My exported file in MPEG has very good video and audio quality.

Export from Aperture to edit in Windows Live Photo Gallery

Hi.
I'm hoping to work collaboratively with a colleague, in a scenario where I take & edit photos, then pass them over for a possible final touch up before being forwarded to clients.
I use Mac OSX 10.6 and Aperture. He uses Windows Vista and Windows Live Photo Gallery.
The problem we've come up against is this: he is unable to edit the image I've exported from Aperture. I'm exporting as .JPG, and he's able to read them ok - i.e. load it into Windows Live Photo Gallery, but not alter the image.
Does anyone have a similar workflow, exporting from Aperture, then editing in Windows Live Photo Gallery?

Agreed, the pertinent question is why can't my colleague edit the JPG exported by Aperture. It's probably also worth pointing out, the same problem occurs with JPGs exported from iPhoto.
The Windows software usually plays nicely with JPGs by all acounts, just not the ones I send - which I do via eMail or my public space on Mobile Me incidently.
So, another key question is: all settings being equal (color profile, quality, etc.) are the JPGs as produced by iPhoto and Aperture indistinguishable from those produced by other apps on other platforms - i.e. does the use of JPG enforce a common standard?
If that is the case, I suspect ours might be a permissions issue.
According to the Microsoft support page on editing in Windows Live Photo Gallery, the inability to edit a picture is commonly caused by unsupported file type, or read-only attribute set on the file.
Unfortunately, he and I are not in the same place, and he's not particularly au-fait with this type of problem solving. Hence, before involving him, I'd like to know:
1. it's possible (i.e. someone else does it), and,
2. what's involved (at my end and/or his).

It doesn't matter whether i'm exporting from Ai or Ps or whether it's CS6 or CC. I have changed the raster settings in Ai and i've also tried all optimization options with all different export file types (jpg, png, gif) at all different quality settings. I have tried exporting at 300ppi and that does fix the quality issue and bloats the file size, but this way (the export route) is so time consuming since you have to resize your artwork each time as well as the artboard so that it doesn't cut off pixels. Save for web never used to have these quality issues and it also never used to cut off pixels around the edges. These workarounds prove very time consuming and produce file sizes that are not ideal.
When i first noticed this issue I was using Mavericks with CS6 and since am using Yosemite and Creative Cloud.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create any bitmap or vector graphic in Ai or Ps, It doesn't matter whether you convert text to outlines or not
2. Save for web
3. View image in any application or browser to see poor quality and pixel trimming. Others running the same version and system are not having this issue, but I have checked many forums and found many others that do have this same issue but can't seem to find a solution.
Results:stair stepping, degradation, pixel trimming, general poor image quality
Expected results: Previously the save for web feature allowed for a decent quality image

I thought of that too so I tested on another machine with retina display and the file i saved on my machine looked bad on my machine and on the other comparable machine/display. So I sent them the original vector ai file and watched while they saved it the exact same way on their machine and the file looked fine on both of our machines/displays.
All of the settings they used appeared the same as what I used but with different results. I don't recall changing anything but does anyone know if there is some setting that could have been changed that is causing this issue?

I need insert high-quality photos of some products to a crystal report dynamically and then export this report to a PDF file to be printed by the customer as some proposal of products.
Some time ago I developed a web-application using MS Visual Studio .NET 2003 and Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET 2003 to generate PDF reports. I added images to reports generating BLOB objects at runtime. But the customer complains on poor quality of images in exported reports. The images in the exported reports have a problem of lost smooth color gradation. Now Iu2019m investigating if Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET 2005 would help me.
So, now Iu2019m using MS Visual Studio .NET 2005 and Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET 2005 for a test and nevertheless I have the same problem with poor image quality in a total report and an exported PDF file. If I insert a photo file (e.g., TIF or PNG, RBG/8) to a report template, I see an original good-quality picture (RBG/8) on the template screen. I do not use any scaling in the test. If I just switch to the Preview tab to preview the report, I see a bad-quality picture instead. It has the same width and height but has lost smooth color gradation and looks like a 256-color picture. The option "Retain Original Image Color Depth" does not help. I have the same problem with image quality in an exported PDF or MS Word file.
Is it possible to manage total image quality in crystal reports and how?

Iu2019ve found how to solve this problem in Crystal Reports for MS VS.NET 2005. The option u201CRetain Original Image Color Depthu201D in the Report Options window helps u2013 the preview screen and the exported PDF file contain images of suitable good quality.

Unfortunately, I donu2019t have the full version of Crystal Reports 9 or 10 to check if this helps to solve image quality problem in the application on MS VS.NET 2003.
So, I try to edit source report templates in Crystal Reports for MS VS.NET 2005. I set the u201CRetain Original Image Color Depthu201D option in the Report Options window for them. Then I use these updated templates in my old application on MS VS.NET 2003 u2013 I donu2019t edit the templates there, I just load these updated templates at runtime. Dynamic images are added as BLOB objects to a data set at runtime to bind the reports. But I still have the same problem of lost color gradation in generated reports and exported PDF files. I also insert static images for a test to the report templates in MS VS.NET 2005 and then generate reports again by the application on MS VS.NET 2003. I have the same problem of lost color gradation for the static images too.
So, is it possible to use u201Coriginal image color depthu201D in an application written on MS VS.NET 2003? Or should I remake the project under MS VS.NET 2005 to retain original image color depth?

Sharpness APERTURE vs iPHOTO~file exported from Aperture worse than iPhoto

HEY.
i'm recently using Aperture for my Photo Editing work.I found that everything Good and Perfect after fine tune and preview in the Window of Aperture...while Export it to the Jpeg (originaly image import from jpeg file) I found it's a bit loose from what i see in the Window Aperture...means,Loose the Sharpness...whole image getting un-sharp or s'ld i say added gausion blur of feel??
Once i import it(the one exported from Aperture) into iPhoto and Export it (even down size to 800 of diamention) it became Sharp and nice colour tone while compare with the one which Export from Aperture!!!!
Why?
In the Export setting of Aperture i do set the Quality to max 12 and 300dpi even...

WARNING! The sharpness problem is occurring in iPhoto modifications as well! I'm running Tiger and Leopard at the same time on 2 different computers - SAME EXACT SHARPNESS problems. The problem is NOT the OS - it's in the APPLE Photo Aps!

Poor Picture Quality in iMovie Which USB Camcorder Will Work and Which Won'

Dear Colleagues,
I continue to read accounts by readers regarding iMovie 98 havinga poor image quality when sharing to iDVD. It has been suggested that users with non-High Definition camcorders, standard DV8 camcorders such as my Sony DCR-TRV315, are stretching the Movie to far when using the Large and Medium setting for sharing ing to iDVD and other media.
If this is the case, what pixel size should I use when sharing to iDVD. I had understood that 720X480 was the standard format for non-High Definition Digital 8 Camcorders. So what correct pixel ratio should I use for DVD playback on a wide-screen HDTV with non-HD recordings.
I am planning to purchase a Sony USB camcorder and I continue to hear reports that they and other brands of USB camcorders won't work with iMovie 08. Is this simply a new user not fully understanding how his new camcorder works?
If this is not the case, how can one determine which USB camcorders are compatible with iMovie 08?

A great deal has been said about im08 degrading interlaced video, to qualify the matter im08 resorts to progressive video depending on the capabilities of your mac, I for example can achieve full quality 1080i exports.
Additionally the matter has to be put into perspective. Of course a source video looks clearer on a mac if it is displayed in it's original interlaced format on a frame by frame basis, but this isn't how one would watch video. interlaced video looks dreadful on a computer monitor and needs to be de-interlaced to be watched, additionally you would never watch a video frame by frame and so comparing video in this way is somewhat pointless. There is a quality difference on some macs but if the video is compared in a realistic way the difference is quite small and often unnoticeable.
720 x 480 as you likely realise uses non square pixels which will be converted to square pixels for your AVC exports in im08, to maintain the aspect ratio of the pixels you should export to DV.
There are a list of supported cameras here, but of course there are many that are not in this list that do work. If you select a camera, post to see if anyone has had any compatibility issues, but as you seem to be aware a number of apparent issues are as a result of user errors rather than incompatibility.

Setting default export quality for PDFs in Pages 5.0

OK, I have managed to get higher quality images from the PDF renderer. Here is what I have found:
1) The PDF renderer in Reporting Services 2005 will size all images that it is given at 96 DPI no matter what DPI the image is when you pass it to the renderer. That means that a 300 DPI image or even a 600 DPI image will be sized in the PDF as if it is only 96 DPI. That means your high DPI image will render much larger than you expect.
So you might expect a 300 DPI image that is 6.5 inches wide to render properly at 1950 pixels. Yet, the PDF renderer will size it as it were 96 DPI which would make the image 20.3 inches long!
2) There is good news though. Despite sizing the images as if they were 96 DPI, the PDF renderer appears to render higher DPI images at a higher quality than 96 DPI. So despite the sizing being wrong, the image actually is rendering at a higher quality.
This means that you should size the image to the proper number of inches based on 96 DPI calculations. Then you can use Bitmap.SetResolution to set your images to at least 300 DPI. That should give you a higher quality image that is the proper number of pixels to fit properly in your report.
I am able to do all of this sizing dynamically because I am using objects as my data sources, but I am sure there are VB functions you could use in the report itself to accomplish the same task.
It is late, and I've been at this project all day long, so forgive me if I have explained anything poorly or gotten any concepts long. Yet, at this late hour, I believe this is what the renderer is doing.
I hope this helps someone else in the future, or at least points them in the right direction.
