Poor performance when running DBMS_STATS package

Hello,
I thought I would throw this issue out to the general population as I am stumped.
I have two identical schemas on two different severs. Database in 9.2.0.6 and for QAS and Production reasons the servers and database settings are identical.
I am running the DBMS_STATS.GATHER_SCHEMA_STATS package on both databases. On the QAS DB it takes roughly 1.5 hours while on the Production database it takes 8.0 hours.
Looking at the statspack analysis, the biggest thing to jump out at me is that the temporary tablespace is getting 4.6 Million I/O hits (reads) while the QAS is only getting a few thousand.
So .... this sort of indicates that something is going on in the PGA which could cause Oracle to use the TEMP tablespace. However when I look in the host performance (using Grid Control) the servers memory, file I/O, and CPU while high are not over 80%.
Has anyone else seen and issue like this? Any ideas where to look?
Thanks,
Chris

To the extent that you are gathering histograms on the data, Oracle potentially has to do a reasonable amount of sorting. If one machine has substantially more physical RAM, that presumably implies that it has more RAM available for the PGA, which would allow more sorts to happen in memory rather than on disk.
Depending on how you create a "refresh copy of production" and what parameters you are passing in to DBMS_STATS, it is also possible that the quality assurance database is gathering substantially more histograms than the production database (i.e. you refresh lower environments via export and import rather than doing an RMAN clone and tell Oracle to gather histograms on any columns that currently have histograms).

  • ZBook 17 g2 - poor DPC Latency performance when running from z Turbo Drive PCIe SSD

    I'm setting up a new zBook 17 g2 and am getting very poor DPC latency performance (> 6000 us) when running from the PCIe SSD. I've re-installed the OS (Win 7 64 bit) on both the PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD and the DPC latency performance is fine when running from the HDD (50 - 100 us) but horrible when running from the PCIe SSD (> 6000 us).  I've updated the BIOS and tried every combination of driver and component enabling/disabling I can think of.  The DPC latency is extremely high from the initial Windows install with no drivers installed.  Adding drivers seems to have no effect on the DPC latency. Before purchasing the laptop I found this review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-ZBook-17-E9X11AA-ABA-Workstation.106222.0.html where the DPC latency measurement (middle of the page) looks OK.  Of course, this is the prior version of the laptop and I believe it does not have the PCIe SSD.  Combining that with the fact that I get fine performance when running from the HDD I am led to believe that the PCIe SSD is the cause of the problem. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?  As it stands right now my zBook is not usable for digital audio work when running from the PCIe SSD.  But it cost me a lot of money so I'd sure like to use it...! Thanks, rgames

    Hi mooktank, No solution yet but, as of about six weeks ago, HP at least acknowledged that it's a problem (finally).  I reproduced it perfectly on another zBook 17 g2 and another PCIe SSD in the same laptop and HP was able to reproduce the problem as well.  So the problem is clearly in the BIOS or with some driver related to the PCIe SSD.  It could also be with the firmware in the drive, itself, but I can't find any other PCIe drives in the 60 mm form factor.  So there's no way to see if a differnt type of drive would fix the problem. My suspicion is that it's related to the PCIe sleep states - those are known to cause exactly these types of problems because the drive takes quick "naps" to save power and there's a delay when it is told to wake back up.  That delay causes a delay in the audio buffer that results in pops/crackles/stutters that would never be noticed doing other tasks like video editing or CAD work .  So it's a problem specific to folks who need low-latency audio performance (very few apps require low latency audio - video editing, for example, uses huge buffers with relatively high latency).  A lot of desktops offer a BIOS option to disable those sleep states but no such option exists in HP's BIOS for that laptop.  In theory you can do it from within Windows but it doesn't have an effect on my system.  That might be one of those options that Windows allows you to change but that actually has no effect. One workaround is to disable CPU throttling.  That makes the CPU run at full speed all the time and, I believe, also disables the PCIe and other sleep states.  When I disable CPU throttling, DPC latency goes back to normal.  However, the CPU is then running full-speed all the time so your battery life basically goes to nothing and the laptop gets *very* hot. Clearly that is not necessary because the laptop runs fine from the SATA SSD.  HP needs to fix the latency problem associated with the PCIe drive. The next logical step is to provide a BIOS update that provides a way to disable the PCIe sleep states without disabling CPU throttling, like on many desktop systems.  The bad news is that HP tech support is not very technical, so it takes forever for them to figure out what I'm talking about.  It took a couple months for them to start using the DPC Latency checker. Hopefully there will be a fix at some point... in the meantime, I hope that HP sends me a check for spending so much time educating their techs on how computers work.  And for countless hours lost re-installing different OSes only to show that the performance is exactly the same as shown in the DPC Latency checker. rgames

    Hi,
    Please read this message in the [ABAP Performance and Tuning|DOI - I_OI_SPREADSHEET, poor performance when reading more than 9999 record; section and see if you have any advise.
    Best Regards,

    Hi,
    I met this issue when I tried to write vaule to massive fields of excel range.
    And I solve this issue by using CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>CLIPBOARD_EXPORT.
    So, I think you may fix it in the same way.
    1. Select range in by the I_OI_SPREADSHEET
    2. Call method I_OI_DOCUMENT_PROXY->COPY_SELECTION
    3. Call method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>CLIPBOARD_IMPORT

  • Poor performance when dragging item within a list loaded with images - Flex 4

    Hi,
    I have a custom built List component that is using a TileLayout. I am using a custom itemRenderer to load images into this list from our server (in this test, 44 images rae loaded). I have enabled dragEnabled and dragMove so that I can move items around within the list. The problem comes when I start dragging an item. The dragging operation is very slow and clunky.
    When I move the mouse to drag the item, the dropIndicator does not get refreshed for a few seconds and the movement feels like my PC is lagging pretty badly. I've also noticed that during this time my CPU usage is spiking up to around 25-40%. The funny part is I can scroll the list just fine without any lag at all, but the minute I drag the application starts to lag really bad. I do have some custom dragOver code that I used to override the dragOverHandler of the list control, but the problem persists even if I take that code out. I've tried with useVirtualLayout set to both true and false and neither setting made a difference.
    Any ideas as to what could be causing the poor performance and/or how I can go abouts fixing it?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Ahh, good call about the Performance profiler. I'm pretty new to the profiling thing with Flex (haven't used Builder Pro before
    the Flex 4 beta) so please forgive me
    I found some interesting things running the performance profiler but I'm not sure I understand what to make of it all. I cleared the Performance Profile data when right before I loaded the images into the list. I then moved some images around and then captured the Profiling Data (If I understand Adobe correctly, this is the correct way to capture performance information for a set of actions).
    What I found is there is a [mouseEvent] item that took 3101ms with 1 "Calls" (!!!!). When I drill down into that item to see the Method Statistics, I actually see three different Callees and no callers. The sum of the time it took the Callees to execute does not even come close to adding up to the 3101 ms (about 40ms). I'm not sure what I can make of those numbers, or if they are even meaningful. Any insight into these?
    The only other items that stand out to me are [pre-render] which has 863ms (Cumulative Time) / 639ms (Self Time), [enterFrameEvent] which has 746ms / 6ms (?!), and [tincan] (what the heck is tincan?) which has times of 521ms for both Cumulative and Self.
    Can anyone offer some insight into these numbers and maybe make some more suggestions for me? I apologize for my ignorance on these numbers - as I said, I'm new to the whole Flex profiling thing.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Edit: I just did another check, this time profiling only from the start of my drag to the end of my drop, and I still see [mouseEvent] taking almost 1000ms of Cumulative Time. However, when I double click that item to see the Method Statistics, no Callers or Callees are listed. What's causing this [mouseEvent] and how come it's taking so long?

  • Error connecting to Oracle from when running SSIS Package on Windows 64-bit

    Hi.
    I have an SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) Package that reads a view on Oracle and loads data into table in SQL Server 2005. This is on a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit). SQL Server 2005 with SP3. Oracle Client 11g (32 bit & 64 bit) Runtime Version installed on server. The server has been rebooted since installing OracleClient.
    I get the following error when run as a SQLAgent job 64 Bit (Execution type SQL Server Integration Services Package)...

    When I execute this same exact package as a SQLAgent job 32-bit (type Operating System CmdExec) it runs successfully. When I run the package using the Execute Package Utility, it runs successfully. When I am editting the package in BIDS I can connect to Oracle. For both 64 and 32 bit, I use a dtsconfig file which specifies the Oracle connection string and password.
    Someone mentioned on another forum that maybe there is no Oracle ODBC driver for 64-bit Windows. I would assume that the OracleClient 64-bit would include that.
    I hope I have included all info needed. Please let me know if you may have a resolution to this problem.
    Thanks.
    John

    I was trying to transfer data from oracle to sql server 2008 on a daily basis.
    I have very hard time connecting to oracle from ssis package on windows server 2008. I am almost dead and cannot find any help. i was able to connect to oracle using import/export 64 bit feature of SQL Server 2008 using Oracle provider for OLEDB. But I am not sure why the same does not work with BIDS?
    Here's the environment info:
    1. Oracle Client 10g
    2. SQL Server 2008
    3. Windows Server 2008
    Appreciate your help. Please save me.

    I am having an issue with performance when accessing a MSAS 2008 cube via the BI Server.
    I think it has to do with the way that the MDX is being generated.
    Please could someone advise on any settings I could try or any known issues with the integration?

    Hi Kim,
    Sorry I can't help out, but, I'm curious how you got the AS 2008 drivers installed for use with OBIEE? I have an AS2008 environment, but, my OBIEE version only supports 2000 and 2005.

  • Poor performance when using kde desktop effect

    Hey,
    I'm having trouble when using kde effet (system settings -> desktop -> desktop effects).
    I have a dual core E5200 3 ghz, 2 GB memory pc8500 and an HD4850 using fglrx driver, but I got incredible bad performance when using desktop effect and watching video, I can barely watch a 800x600 video in full screen mode without having bad performance, X getting up to 40% cpu usage.
    Its really like my graphic card isnt handling the rendering stuff but 3D acceleration is working, I can play 3D game without problem so far (as long as the deskstop effect arent enabled cause the cpu have like a hard time handling both for recent game)
    So I guess its some trouble with 2D acceleration or something like that, I read that some people had such issue, but I didnt figure a way to fix it.

  • Poor performance when multitasking on T510, Core i5, Windows 7 64, 4GB RAM, NVidia Optimus 512MB

    I'm saddly disappointed with my new Lenovo performance and don't know what might be the cause.
    I just got a new T510 with Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and Windows 7 64. When I run a couple of programs, like Photoshop, a Virtualbox (850 MB of RAM allocated), Google Chrome with a couple of tabs I get stuck.
    It seems that 4GB of memory is not enough for the work I did on a 2GB machine a week ago.
    The computer's response time is a couple of seconds for window switching. New programs start counting in minutes. RAM consumption reaches 98%, even though no single program is listed to consume more than a 150MB in either Task Manager or Resource monitor. Aero effects work cool, though, there's no sloppiness in the graphical layer of the system.
    Even now, after having Virtualbox killed, remaining processes take up 89% of RAM memory in Resource manager.
    I'm working on AC power supply with "Perfomance" power setting, but I can hardly call it a performance.
    This is ridiculous, it was supposed to be a fast multitasking machine and it turns out to be a load of junk. I used to work on 2GB, 1.6GHz Celeron with Intel GMA processor, had Ubuntu host and Windows XP guest with 750MB RAM allocated plus a couple of programming tools running and never had such issues _on regular basis_.
    I'm considering running a Ubuntu on this machine because I simply can't work this way on Windows 7... I can't even kill a process easily because it takes ages to End a process.
    A friend of mine is running similar setup on a T410 machine with slower CPU and poorer graphics and he says this is really strange, because he never had such problems. My PC is new, 4 days since arrival, his is like 2-months old.
    Has anyone experienced similar problem? What might be the cause?
    At this point I have Chrome with ~10 tabs, empty Firefox, empty Photoshop, Pidgin, and 3 explorer windows running, Adobe Reader with 1 document and Sticky Notes. RAM consumption is 3495MB in use (yeah right), 276MB standby and 113 free.
    What's wrong here?!
    Please see the screenshot attached:

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Well, the issue is solved. After removing bundled Norton Internet Security suite it runs like gold-plated.
    I'll get another anti-virus software, then.
    Now, even with the Virtualbox running, I still have like 2GB free RAM. And no lags, no slow-downs. Woohoo.
    **bleep** you Norton!

  • Error when running MakeDim package

    Hi there,
    I have a really annoying problem with the Admin_MakeDim package in the Examples folder of BPC.
    We have a Data Services process which is populating a staging table which is an exact duplicate of the mbrAccount table. When I run the makedim package to create my dimension from this staging table I don't get any member errors (I did but I fixed them), but I still get this message:
    "Operation is not allowed when the object is closed. : Location (bCheckMemberIsInsertedMidel)
    Location (adoCheckUniqueID)"
    I've searched on the forum, and in the SAP notes, and I came across these SAP notes, which seemed to be relevant:
    1101613
    1099136
    1101529
    1099135
    1107441
    1102829
    However, none of these solutions has helped.
    Has anyone else found and fixed this problem? We are on BPC for MS 7 sp7, on SQL Server 2005.
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
    have you seen also these notes
    http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1704468
    http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1447125
    you wrote note 1099136, you mean 1099135, correct?
    check also the message in google you will found a lot of messages and maybe one could be useful.
    Kind regards

  • PLS-00201 when running dbms_compression package

    Hello,
    I am trying to gather compression rate estimates in a 10g database before we upgrade to 11g. I have downloaded the dbms compression package from OTN: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/options/compression/compression-advisor-095705.html
    And installed this in my 10g db:
    SQL> @dbmscomp.sql
    Package created.
    Synonym created.
    Grant succeeded.
    No errors.
    SQL> @prvtcomp.plb
    Package body created.
    Synonym created.
    Grant succeeded.
    No errors.
    When I try to run execute this package as shown in the README file, I get the following error:
    SQL> exec dbms_compression.getratio ('SAPAPO','/SAPAPO/MATLOC','OLTP',10);
    BEGIN dbms_compression.getratio ('SAPAPO','/SAPAPO/MATLOC','OLTP',10); END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_COMPRESSION.GETRATIO' must be declared
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    Please let me know if anyone has encountered this error before.
    Thank you

    not sure why the readme referenced the dbms_compression package... guess I should have looked through the package creation script. Thanks for looking at this.I don't think it does -- it's stating that this does the same as DBMS_COMPRESSION, but of course they're just implementing partial functionality of one procedure of DBMS_COMPRESSION. They'd name it something different for that reason, and because it's presence might break an upgrade from 10g to 11g.
    I'm not a huge fan of this package
    1 The compress_type parameter makes no difference to the code execution, but you still have to supply a valid value.
    2 The temporary tables that are created probably ought to be NOLOGGING.
    3 The uncompressed table is created without any storage clause so a PCTFREE of 10 is used -- that might be appropriate for OLTP compression (I have no idea) but OLTP compression isn't available in 10g so the metrics would be out anyway. It should probably be hardcoded to a value of 0.
    4 There's no error handling to remove the temporary tables in the event of a problem, or detect the pre-existence of the DBMS_COMPRESSION_TEMP_UNCMP or DBMS_COMPRESSION_TEMP_CMP tables.

  • When Running DBMS_STATS inside a Proecure it Fails

    Hello.
    I need to schedule a job to compute stats.
    I decide to create a Procedure GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2 and schedule a job as described below :
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2
    as
    BEGIN
    FOR i IN
    select distinct owner,table_name from dba_tables
    where owner in ('GTS2','GTS2_BW')
    and table_name not in ('EXTRACT_ALLOCATIONS_TEU','EXTRACT_TARIFFS_IT')
    LOOP
    BEGIN
    dbms_stats.gather_table_stats
    ( ownname => i.owner
    , tabname => i.table_name
                   , degree => 4
         , cascade => TRUE);
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    NULL;
    END;
    END LOOP;
    END GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2;
    VARIABLE jobno number;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_JOB.SUBMIT(:jobno,'GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2;',SYSDATE+2/24, 'SYSDATE+240/1440');
    COMMIT;
    END;
    The Procedure COMPILES WITHOUR ERRORS.
    The job is well scheduled.
    But when I run manually the procedure GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2 I get
    14:17:59 dodbw01.ctr.globedev.ddc> exec sys.GATHERTABLESTATSGTS2;
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    Elapsed: 00:00:00.93 >>>>>>>>>> executed in less the 1 Seconde !!!!!!!!!!!
    14:18:06 dodbw01.ctr.globedev.ddc>
    And when I check in DBA_TAB_COL_STATISTICS
    select * from DBA_TAB_COL_STATISTICS
    where owner in ( 'GTS2','GTS2_BW')
    order by owner,table_name;
    I don't have any stats , I mean statsitics have not been updated.
    Does someone alredy face this issue before?

    Did you not try what I suggested in your Re: DBMS_STATS Gather_Table_Stats Fails when Called inside a Procedure in the SQL and PL/SQL forum?

  • Error when running dbms_stats.gather_database_stats from dbms_job?

    I had an issue with the default oracle job to analyze the database. I opened a metalink ticket and they said there is a known bug in 10.1.0.3 with the default oracle job and it does not work.
    I am not allowed allowed to update. so the work around was to run this from dba_jobs.
    I have this job created as system and run it manually...
    dbms_stats.gather_database_stats(cascade => TRUE,method_opt => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO',
    degree=>8 )
    I can execute this when logged in as system.
    When I try to execute the job I get:
    ORA-12012: error on auto execute of job 26ORA-20000: Insufficient privileges to analyze an object in DatabaseORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 12086ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 12425ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 12567ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 12531ORA-06512: at line 1This is running as system?
    The table I don't have access to is located in someones schema.
    log_user,priv_user, and schema_user are all system...
    Why can I run this manually and not through a job?

    The table I get an error on is not partitioned.
    I also do not get a exception when I run that procedure manually as system, but when I run it from dba_jobs, I get an insufficient privileges issue.
