Poor sound quality on airtunes and airport express

I recently configured a new Airport Extreme base station and two airport expresses. I used the airport expresses to extend my network but the sound quality is very poor when I run itunes no my stero. can anyone tell me why and how to fix it. The sound is very scratchy and there is no volume.

Dear All,
I'd like to follow up because I think that the answer to why I am getting poor sound quality my be in how I set up my wireless network. I'd like to get some feedback about this and some help about how to correct it.
My wireless network has three components.
1. "Base Station" which is a new Airport Extreme.
2. Unit "Number 1" which is an Airport Express located in my living room and connected to my stereo. it is 30 feet away from the "Base Station."
3. Unit "Number 2", also an Airport Express that is upstairs in a bedroom and connected to a ruby imac. via its ethernet port.
Wireless strength is excellent in all locations and all other services are working well from a laptop, the ruby mac or the imac. My problem only seems readily apparent when playing itunes through the stereo's speakers.
My wireless system is configured as follows:
Base Station: Wireless mode is set to participate in wireless network and to allow this network to be extended. The WDS mode is main and is set to allow wireless clients. The two airport expresses are identified by ID number as remotes.
Unit 1 and 2 are configured as WDS remotes and to allow wireless clients and identify the base station as WDS main.
I recently configured a new Airport Extreme base
station and two airport expresses. I used the
airport expresses to extend my network but the sound
quality is very poor when I run itunes no my stero.
can anyone tell me why and how to fix it. The sound

  • Poor sound quality in timeline and export; fine in Source?

    Hello all.
Newbie to Pr but experienced pro in digital audio. I'm stumped and know I'm just missing something somewhere.
I've made a music video for one of my songs. The graphics are all done (in AE), imported to Pr and eveything looks great. I import the final mix of the audio and it sounds very low quality when played from the timeline and in the final output, regardless of format (I've tried several presets and custom settings as well). I played around and noticed that the audio sounds fine when played from the Source window inside Premier.
The Pr session is comrised of 18 video tracks (not all playing at once, of course) and one stereo audio track.
I've tried re-exporting the audio from Logic at different bit depths, sample rates and file formats (mp3, wav, AAC, etc) but the results are the same every time: Source (Pr)sounds fine, Logic output sounds fine, rendered / timeline playback sounds like very low quality mp3 and final product sounds just as bad.
I've tried everything I can think of. I hope one of you can show me what I'm missing.
    TIA!

    Thank you for the reply!
I was experiencing the same results no matter what export settings I used. Plus the poor sound quality was present in the timeline itself, without even exporting the project.
I finally threw my hands up, started a completely new project, drug the same audio file in... sounded fine. Copied / Pasted the video clips from the original, broken project and boom, eveything is fixed. Yeah, corrupted Pr file it turns out. All I had to do was start a new project and import all the old components.
I've had to do this in Logic a lot (increasingly, these days). I just wish I'd tried it 10 hours earlier! Ha.
Anyway, problem solved, and thanks very much!

  • Bad sound quality streaming audio via Airport Express

I am streaming audio from iPhone to Apple Airport Express (Airplay). Via optical cable the signal goes to Cambridge DacMagic and then to Stereo Amplifier. Sound is not good, there's some kind of 'chattering'.
When using AirFoil instead of Airplay sound is much better, but then gaps appear from time to time.
Please tell me, what can be the reason for it? And how to solve?
    Thanks in advance.

    Mr. Tessarex,
I use the Airport Exreme as router and Airport Express (2011, direct plug-in model)
Some facts I learned from the Airport-app on my iPhone:
    Wireless clients from Airport Extreme:
    iPhone 150Mb/s (802.11 a/n) connection: excellent
    Acer laptop 144Mb/s (802.11 b/g/n) connection: excellent
    The Airport Express:
    240Mb/s (802.11 a/n) connection: good
I bought the song "Love Me Like You Do" (Ellie Goulding) via iTunes.
As you adviced me I tried to play it via iTunes, and streamed it from iPhone to Airport Express.
Especially listening to the bombastic part of the song (from 3:14). Sound was tolerable.
Playing the song from iPhone via Spotify: sound is awfull, totally overloaded.
Playing the song from laptop via Spotify (Airfoil): sound is good.
Playing the song from laptop via iTunes (Airplay): sound is good.
The song never plays 'Excellent' in any way. I Think the song was recorded 'over the top'.
Even when you listen to it via headphone, it sounds very messy, "on the edge...".
I am happy that most songs sound good. So far playing Spotify via laptop and Airfoil gives the best results.
According to the figures from the Airport-app, it seems I will never get optimal bitrate with my current system.
As amplifier I use the Luxman L505u, usually connected tot Airport Express via Cambridge Dacmagic,
but during testing via normal analog cable (without Dacmagic). So far I think the Dagmagic is not the problem.
What do you think, after reading my story?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

  • Poor sound quality on ipod and G4

The last three albums i have downloaded from itunes music store have poor sound quality. On both my G4 and my ipod the songs have a lot of noise. They sound as though the speakers are blown, or the eq is maxed. All my songs prior to these last three downloads sound fine on the same speakers and headphones.
    Am i nuts?
Marc Cohn and St John's Childrens Choir are the last two albums i have downloaded.

? well idk what theyre talking about but i just got a new 160 GB classic 3 days ago and ive been perfectly happy with it and my music is only encoded at around 160, some down to 92 VBR! (saves disk space) and i work with music everyday as a listener, player, and engineer.

  • Can AppleTV be used with and like Airtunes and Airport Express?

So great! I can now play my music through my Home Cinema System on my TV but what about Airtunes? I have an Airport Express in my Studio and my Bedroom. Is there any way the Apple TV will act in the same way? Or can I select the other Airport Express Stations from AppleTV? If not are Apple planning on making this happen. I know it's early days for the AppleTV but they must have thought of this before hand? They did delay it's launch.
Thanks in advance for comments and Help!
    Pete

Currently there is no function to do that. I agree with you that this needs to be an added feature. Maybe the reasoning was that since the control for AirTunes is from the computer out to the remote speakers you would not need it with AppleTV since you control the content from there. Apple should have made the AppleTV not only a remote speaker but a remote controller. Maybe in the first update (PLEASE!).

  • Airtunes and Airport Express

Why the heck can't I stream my music to my airport express???
This is crazy - airport express has wifi, ipod touch has wifi, what's the problem?!

Out of the box iTunes streaming to your iPhone
Hey guys - this is a bit of a detour form what we usually cover on the blog - but I just wanted to share this little trick I thought of for the iPhone.
I currently have movies added to iTunes on a Mac mini with a TB drive. I thought tonight - wouldn’t it be great if I could stream these to my iPhone - it should be easy right? It is…
    Step 1
Open “Sharing” in System Preferences and enable “Personal Web Sharing” - this will turn on the built in web server installed with OS X. When enabled, it will display an address (your IP or computer network name) as the URL for accessing the site on your network. Note this address - we’ll be visiting it on our iPhone via Safari later.
    Step 2
The root of the web site is located in /Library/WebServer/Documents.
Open the Terminal and type the following:
    cd /Library/WebServer/Documents/
    and press ENTER.
    Step 3
Still in the Terminal we will continue by creating a Symbolic link to your iTunes “Movies” directory and place this link in the root of your web server by typing the following:
ln -s /[path ti your iTunes Movies folder] Movies
    example: ln -s/Volumes/Machintosh HD/users/john/Music/iTunes/Movies Movies
    Step 4
Open Safari on your iPhone and visit the address provided when you enabled the Personal Web Sharing in your iPhone followed by /Movies
    Example: http://192.168.2.20/Movies/
You will be presented with a text directory listing of all of your iTunes movies. Simply tap on any movie link and it’ll launch QuickTime on the iPhone and play the movie - just like any other video streamed on the web.
Technically if your home internet connection has a high upload speed you could even stream your content over the internet - outside of your local network - assuming your ISP doesn’t block port 80.
Just thought I’d share that with you - it’s a quick and simple thing you can do with no special software required.

  • Poor sound quality, Airport Express

    Hi,
I have this 2 yrs old airport express but it has all of the sudden a really poor sound quality.
When I connect it to my home stereo and play through airplay and if I connect headphones the sound is very poor and scratchy
I've used 3 diffferent cables to connect it to my home stereo and i've tried 2 different set of headphnoes.
When i connect directly to my home stereo with RCA cable the sound is fine.
Is the only solution to buy a new airport?
    Thank you.

Based on your description, it appears that the base station's internal DAC is the issue and may be failing. Unfortunately these are not user replaceable parts and a complete base station replacement may be the only option at this point in time.
One other option to try, if your stereo supports digital optical input, is to use a mini-jack Toslink cable connected between the base station's audio port and the stereo to see if you can get "clean" sound this way.

  • I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac. Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before. I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings.

I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac.
Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before.
I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings. I have also used Ethernet on its own but still get the same sound problems.
I would love to turn itunes sound off as you used to be able to do, but this I believe can't be done.
Has anyone else been having the same types of problem, and better still has anyone got the answer?

When the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is connected by Ethernet, you will find an option in the AirPort Utility, labeled: Enable AirTunes over Ethernet on the Music pane. Just select this option to allow streaming iTunes via the AirPort's Ethernet port. You should also be able to disable the AX's wireless so that it shouldn't interfere with the nearby TC.

  • Netgear and Airport express

    Hi there,
I have an airport and airport express that work well together with my powerbook - my partner uses a PC, has a Netgear wireless router - the question is - can I take my airport express round to hers and plug it into her printer and hifi to play music or print through my Powerbook - if I can how do I set it up?
    Cheers

If you take your Airport Express from your house to your friend's place, and all you do at your friend's place is plug a printer and a sound system into your Airport Express, then you don't need to change any settings on either your Mac or the Airport Express - other than the obvious ones of (a) installing the printer on the Mac and (b) configuring your Airport Express to enable Airtunes and name the speakers (both settings found under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility).
If, however, you want to have both wireless iTunes streaming and printing AND internet access at the same time - that requires more a complicated reconfiguration. Please post another message indicating if that is the intent.

  • Wireless modem and Airport Express.. one at a time

Recently my internet provider upgraded my old plug in modem to a newer wireless model. Now it seems that the current setting allow communication with only one or the other at the same time. If I want to be online with the wireless modem and send my iTunes music via Airport Express to my sound system, no dice. I have to either click on the modem up in the Airport choices to be online and listen to iTunes through the computer speakers, or go offline to listen to music through the sound system and Airport Express.
I'm sure I'm just missing something in preferences or settings somewhere.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

    No ideas?

  • Apple TV Inference with Time Capsule and Airport express?

I have recently bought an Apple TV 2, which seem to be working fine, however since installing it on my wireless network both my Time Capsule and Airport Express can't be found. Following some fault finding it seems that when I unplug the Apple TV I can reconfingure the TC and AE.
The TC and AE are configured to join my existing network....and have happy sat there for a few years.
I would really welcome any ideas.
    Thanks
    R

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have the basic configuration covered correctly.
You might want to check some settings on the TC:
Wireless Mode would be create a wireless network
"Allow this network to be extended" should be checked
The AX should be set to "extend a wireless network"
The "allow wireless clients" box should be checked
In this configuration, the ethernet port on the AX is active so things should work.
A minor point...Although the TC is a dual band device, the AirPort Express is not. Can you make sure that that the Express is connecting to the "main" network on your TC? The "guest" network cannot be "extended".
If you place your laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key while you click on the AirPort icon, some connection information will be displayed. The MAC address of the device that the laptop is connecting to will be indicated. Make sure that that this is the MAC address of the AX, and not the TC.
Another note...If you have not changed the default "main" network, the radio mode is broadcasting 802.11n only at 5 GHz. These higher frequencies are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, if you AX is some distance away, you may not be receiving a strong signal for the device at that location.
If you have a signal strength utility on your laptop (the "bars" at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of actual signal strength), turn off the AX and take a reading to see what kind of signal the Express is receiving where it is located.
Please post back with your results.

  • Creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express

i am having trouble creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express. i got the airport express to connect to my network. Airtunes sees it fine. i have an iMac (running Tiger) connected to the airport express via ethernet which i was hoping to get internet on (the iMac doesn't not have built in wireless and i had a spare airport express). now the airport express is no longer visible to the airport setup assistant on that iMac. but, like i mentioned, Airtunes is working fine, and the light is green.
i'm new to the wireless stuff. i am sure i just missed a step. how do i get the iMac to connect to the internet via my airport express bridging to my airport extreme wireless network?
    your help is appreciated.

You can do this with the equipment you have. Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to act as a WDS main base station and configure the AirPort Express (AX) to act as a WDS remote base station. That will allow you to use the Ethernet port on the AX.
Unfortunately WDS also causes the available wireless bandwidth to be cut in half.

  • Poor Sound Quality with iTunes 8

I just installed iTunes 8, and all of the songs in my Library play with poor sound quality regardless of the view I have open. The sound is really muffled, but the voices and higher frequencies sound tinny and shaky. I tried playing with the Equalizer and Sound Enhancer settings, but was not able to fix the problem.
What can I do to get the iTunes 7 sound back?

I, too, am experiencing a significant decline in the sound quality of recordings in my collection. The recordings sound very muffled on the low, bass end of the sound spectrum, and the treble is significantly diminished. This decline in sound quality occurred immediately after I upgraded to iTunes 8. The sound quality in iTunes 7 was fine, and overall better.
It appears that my iTunes 8 attempts to improve the playback sound quality of songs with 128 kbps bit rates, as these songs in my collection do seem to actually sound better. However, most of my collection are recordings imported at the higher sound quality standard of 320 kbps from CDs that I purchased, and these recordings all sound poor since I've installed iTunes 8.

  • Poor sound quality on some iTunes songs

Downloaded some songs from iTunes and realized a really poor sound quality on some files.
The worst example is "Precious" from "Depeche Mode" (Album version). It seems to me that the AAC file is encoded at a much too high level, so its overdriven and distorted.
If i burn the song to CD and than analyze the track in WaveLab it is obvious that the song was encoded with a level more than 6dB over the usual level and i can see a lot of clippings.
Downloaded another song of another band that i allready have on CD, just to compare... and this song was much better. Even this was 3dB over the original CD level (and the song on CD had a peak level reserve of only 0.1dB), but while listening that song i heared no negative effects...
So from my point of view iTunes is not really an acceptable offer if i can't rely on a minimum sound quality of the songs that i pay for!
    So, the question is:
Is this normal or is the "Depeche Mode" album only one rare bad example???

    Yes, of cause, tried all.
EQ off, or EQ with all sliders a little below 0dB.
With my tests i saw no effect of the EQ to the CD burning quality.
Only if i change the CD burning options (in german "Lautstärke anpassen", something like "adapt volume" or so), than i get a CD that has the same bad quality, only at a lower volume.
The same distorted and overdriven sound with clippings at a lower level (peak -12dB).
What if it's really a bad file?
    Do they fix such files?
Will i have a chance to download it again? (without paying another time?)

  • Poor sound quality when using air play

How do I fix poor sound quality when using air play with my Denon receiver?

I am not too sure if this is affected by BT software stack or RF design...
iPhone 3G with FW 2.x provides Cisco VPN as well as Email support for corporate usage. However, it's weird that business man wouldn't want to use BT headset and talk to people... We are not asking about new feature support, like A2DP, but reliable, stable BT connection ONLY!!
I've read that lots folks spent a lot of money on purchasing many different BT headsets and tried to get it work with iPhone 3G. I myself tried: Plantronics 510/815/855, Sony HBH-DS970/980, Nokia BH-903. None of them can work fine with my iPhone 3G ever! And iPhone 3G even cause BH-903 and DS-980 hang up after pairing or finishing call!!
That's why I don't believe it's just a "SPECIAL CASE". How could a product FOR BUSINESS purpose get this kind of basic function problem?
I hope we will find this issue could be resolved completely with new F/W, like Safari crash problem before. Other than this BT IOT problem, iPhone 3G is really the phone/companion could provide complete solution fulfill my personal and business needs.
