Poor still photo quality in iMovie 10

Does anyone know how to improve the quality of still photos imported from iphoto to imovie 10. They are fine in iphoto but
become blurry in imovie 10

Have you a set prescription that you use when beginning the Burn to Disc from iDVD. That's where my problem is.

The jaggies appear on any horizontal or vertical shape, especially buildings (as noted elsewhere in this forum).
My logic says that if the project plays very well in iDVD and wavers in a DVD burnt from iDVD, that the wavies are introduced in the burn process. I tried recording at Slideshow settings of HD 720p as suggested. No help there.
Another suggestion has been that the digital cameras are ahead of the iMac Dual Core capabilities. I don't know about that. My Pentax SLR does load them in.
For the moment I am eliminating the two dramatic zooms because they are distracting and waiting for a solution which will have to take form outside of my meager experience.

I work with still photographs only. Trying to produce a slideshow DVD that maintains the original quality of the photo. After reading some postings on iMovie & this problem, I took the advice of several photographers & now use FotoMagico. Photo qulaity is execellent as images are not coverted to video as they are in iMovie. Program also allows the transitions & Ken Burns effects available in iMovie. To produce DVD, you must export to iDVD or Roxio Toast to burn DVD. After export to iDVD the images degraded - both on the screen & on the burned DVD & hen played on screen or HD TV. I don't have Roxio Toast. Does Roxio maintain the photo file or covert to video image? Can someone tell me what it will take to produce a DVD from Still photographs that will maintain image quality & offer transitions & title slides?

LOL - I had the same problem. Hidden in plain sight! All I saw was Numeric, and thought "Duh! Of course it's numeric - it's a slider!"
I do think NI could do a much better job on this, perhaps with more informative labelling. Slider Scaling or Scale Format might be better. Also, since one can select the Digital Display by itself on the front panel, one should be taken directly to the digital display formatting when Properties is selected, instead of still having to change the dropdown. By selecting the digital display instaead of the slider, you're implying that you want to change its format only.

You do not need the QuickTime MPEG2 disk image unless you want to convert some MPEG2 clips. For photos, you don't need it.

Photo quality in Imovie

I have Imovie HD 6 and Final Cut Express. I am creating the typical slideshow with photos from a digital camera and adding transitions and music, blah, blah.
When I export in each application I get the same quicktime export screen. No matter what I do I get crappy photo quality in the imovie export and amazing photo quality in the FCE export. Are they not both using the same quicktime export? Why is there such a difference in quality?
I did notice that if I render the imovie video as "uncompressed" ir in HD I get ALMOST the same quality as the FCE render on a typical MP4 export.
Just wondering why this is since they seem to both just be using Quicktime to create the compression.

I don't own FPE (or have any "video" camera) but you're mixing apples and oranges when using image formats in "video" apps.
iMovie is a DV editing app and converts your single image into 30 similar files per second (.dv). The same is probably true with FCE but it may be set for "high quality" which may appear better. And the newer option to use MPEG-4 does make a bit of difference.
Neither is appropriate for using still image files because of this conversion.
First rule would be to use the appropriate dimensions for your destination. Standard definition video would be 640X480 and not your multi megabyte source files.
I would add (scaled) the 640X480 sized image to a few seconds of audio (you decide the duration), extract the new video track and then export that as DV Stream (.dv) using QuickTime Pro.
Same as if it came from a DV camera.

Maintaining Photo Quality In iMovie

Question for one of you brilliant guys using iMovie.
I have my movie for the veterans almost finished, but I have a question on maintaining photo quality when publishing or finalizing the movie.
I did a test and exported my movie to hard drive, but the photos have piilation in shaded areas like the photos were taken with a Dollar Store throw away camera. The original photos are good quality. I exported as 720 HD. How can I get the best quality if I want to put the movie on DVD?

Still photos imported to imovie change to solid green

i'm using all the newest versions of iLife and Aperture (as of 11/13/13)... i use iMovie to make slideshows from my photography because i like the controls better than in Aperture or iPhoto... however, since upgrading to Mavericks and all of the new iWorks, iLife, Aperture on my Fall 2011 MBA, when i import still photos into iMovie to make a slideshow, they have a propensity to be rendered, at least in previews, as solid green images (think green screen)... i'm using jpeg images that have been exported to a separate file from my Aperture library, all using RGB color... there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which ones render incorrectly and which do not... sometimes the thumbnail image appears as the solid green, most of the time, though, it will appear as a standard thumbnail image, but show up green on the preview screen. I have not tried actually exporting the project as a quicktime movie to see what happens. I have tried closing and reopening imove after import, but that seems to make no difference. if i delete the files and reimport, sometimes they will import correctly, but often they do not.
My iMovie files, as well as the exported jpg's are all located on my internal SSD. Is anyone else having this kind of thing happen?

I have been having the same problem with iMovie and the iPhoto library, where the imported pictures turn to solid green.
What I tried was to convert the photos to a video fileand import into iMovie - this is what I did:
- I opened up iPhoto and created a slideshow with the picture (or pictures) to be added to the iMovie project.
- Then I exported the slideshow to the desktop (or wherever you want) which creates a video file. I noticed it is mpeg-4 format, and I do not see anywhere to change this format.
- Back in iMovie, I imported the new video into the project either by Import Media or dragging it in, I guess either way works.
This seems to work for me so far, even though I'm still experimenting. But I am still disappointed in this, since it only happened since the upgrade to Mavericks and iMovie 10.

Audio/still photos in an iMovie project

Hi, I am working on a project where I will videotape someone speaking. I hope to have some of the project be video of her speaking, as well as still photos and other video included. BUT I would like to have the person speaking the entire time. In other words, she will be sharing a story and at times I will show photos and/or video of what she is talking about. What is the easiest way to do this? Do I just videotape the whole thing and then extract audio and delete clips and put the still photos in where I've deleted clips? Will that work and keep the audio on track when I return to the person speaking? Thanks for your help!!!!

Yep you got it! You can leave the video, just use "paste over at playhead"

Still photos incorporated into imovie

i have reg photos that i want in a movie project along with video. is this possible to import still photos? if so how please.

Are your still photos loaded in iPhoto?
If so, in iMovie, click on the button that looks like a camera on the left hand center side of the iMovie window:

The will allow you to access and use all your photos from IPhoto in your project. Just click on the photo you want to use and drag it to the project, you should be good to go.

Poor CD photo quality

After creating a slideshow, adding audio, then burning slideshow to CD or DVD, the CD or DVD photo quality is terribly out of focus. Pictures are blurry, or generally distorted. The photoshop images are clean and focused. What is the problem here, and how might I fix it

If you only have PSE and are making a VCD, you bet it's lousy. That's just the limitation of the format. Better to output your slideshow as a wmv file and then use whatever burning software you have (if you have a DVD burner, you have the software) to make it into a video dvd.

Poor photo quality in iMovie

When I import a still picture into iMovie from either the desktop or from the media library and use it in a movie, the quality of the photo suddenly becomes terrible in both the iMovie preview screen immediately upon import and later in the actual exported movie.
Here's an example which dramatically illustrates this problem:
Here is a JPEG photo I took at sunset with a Nikon D7000.
The picture is intentially underexposed as it is one of the final shots in a time lapse sunset movie.
Now, here's the photo exported into a 1080p iMovie!
The photo is now horrible! Gag me!
I've tried various settings in "Export using QuickTime" and the quality does not improve. From my research, it appears this has been a persistent issue.
Has anyone found a good work around?, or alternate workflow?

When I do a slide show I use from 1 to 2.5mg.
I go from Photoshop E / iPhoto to a folder on my DT then drag to iMovie without going to iPhoto.
iPhoto is an easy import. I do use it from time to time.
I do not crop, I use iMovie. I find that a better way.
I do not use KB to import. I then change some to KB.
Special effects no more then every 5th frame.I do break that one too.
I also use Toast.It works for me.

Getting poor still image quality in SD project on CS4

hey guys. sorry if you heard this one, but i havent seen anything addressing this.
i am using CS4 to edit a Standard def project and i am running into a problem with still images being choppy and distorted.
I tried all options to produce a better quality, but i get poor quality in the timeline monitor even after i render preview. the ouput
when i export is equally bad.
what i did find out was that if i switched projects in favor of an HD 720 the images are crisp on import and look good.
am i missing something. i assumed the images looked bad because they werent rendered and since i didnt need to render to edit i didnt want to lose the time, so now i'm stuck with those images, or i have to scrap the project and start again in hd and i prefer not to. i would have done it in hd, but the footage i was given was SD. anyways i would appreciate some help. thanks!
btw i've tried to export in both MS DV and WMV
i have tried importing psd png and jpg i have used all these in the past in pro2 with no problem

still images being choppy and distorted.

Photo Quality in iMovie HD

I'm importing photos into iMovie . . . all of them look GREAT when viewed in photo or graphic applications, but when bringing them into iMovie they look distorted and blurry. When they were originally created I saved them at a high resolution to hopefully avoid problems like this. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks

I'm having a similar problem with this and I wonder if you've gotten anywhere? I've used Keynote to create builds with my text & image content for an intro to a presentation that I'm putting together in iMovie.
The resolution quality when I export from Keynote (at high quality 1280x1920) to Quicktime is variable depending on what format I set the Quicktime view at when I open the file in Quicktime. At actual size, it looks perfect. When I switch it to full screen mode, it's horrible. So perhaps my problem starts in this phase from Keynote to Quicktime?
Just to check to see, I then drag the Quicktime movie into iMovie to incorporate it into the presentation. Here, the graphics retain their quality, but the text content stays horrible.
From here, when I "share" to quicktime with all settings at highest quality, the quality is indeed the worst when opened and viewed in quicktime.
Has anybody found a remedy for this? It seems to be a common problem where there are so many places one can go wrong....

Loss of photo quality in imovie

I have been using imovie to create a slide show of sorts. The photos I am using are tiff files. When I try to save it so I can then send it to idvd to make a dvd it reduces all the files to jpegs and thus reduces the quality of the photos. Can I stop this happening? Also is there a way of creating a dvd in imovie rather than sending it to another program? I'm new to all this so it's a bit confusing. I just don't want to compromise the quality of the images.

Poor still image quality in Premiere Pro

Hi, I am new to Premiere Pro. A couple of weeks ago I made 2 slide shows using still pictures from a school trip to Washington DC. I added .m4a audio files and they look great. Today I made 3 more slide shows, same sources, but the picture quality isn't there. It seems I must have changed something? The quality of the pictures varies, as they come from different cameras, but when I have a high quality picture - for example 5 MB - that looks great in Windows Photo Viewer, it still looks bad in Premiere Pro. I'm using Fit and Full, pictures look bad in the smaller window and when viewed full screen. This is before any exporting.
It occurs to me that I didn't know about rendering until I watched a tutorial, now when I make changes I hit enter to render. Could that have anything to do with it? I see my Arlington video isn't rendered now (shows red sections), and it's one of the ones that looks good.
Typically when I create a project I choose Frames for Display Format and HDV for Capture Format. I don't see any differences between the old and new projects.
I'm supposed to hand out DVDs at school tomorrow, it's the last day so I need help! Thanks

The list is valid if you save the file in square pixels.
However, I believe there is an easier way if one has
Photoshop.
In Photosohop, you can change the image pixel
aspect ratio directly. The drop down for that parameter lists common video formats.
Change the PAR first (e.g., 1.33) and then, using the crop tool set for the frame dimensions, e.g., 1440 x 1080. Save the file. Premiere will recognize the image format. There's no reason to keep track of what the square pixel frame size is.
You can create Photoshop Actions to somewaht automate this process.
