Portable HD support

I understand that Ipad is a lightweight computer. That's why i love mine.
One huge frustration though : 32 or 64 gb is very limited In today's world. That's why I usually carry round my 1Tb very small and lightweight portable HD to access my video collection. Why won't Apple allow a direct connection from my Ipad to my portable HD for Video transfers on The Go, and forces me therefore to stick to my heavy pseudo-portable PC In order to do these transfers through Itunes ?

You can use the files browser app from the app store to access and file that the iPad supports from your desktop computer, external hard drives too. You can save files to and from the iPad. This is better than nothing. I like it because it saves drive space on the iPad. You can steam audio and video.
Air Video is a very fast video streaming app. It only streams video.
I have both apps and they work extremely well.

I have to backup of Gmail with Thunderbird Portable, so I could free some space on server - but when I use IMAP (to keep labels) after deletin on server...
...my post also deletes on Thunderbird. Please make an option to prevent it, so deleting on a server doesn't effect mail in the Thunderbird. I would be so happy to have it...

First Thunderbird portable is supported by its author at portableapps.com.
Secondly you are describing exactly how the IMAP email standard works and Thunderbird has no control over that.
Thunderbird has Local Folders to move messages that you want to keep locally. Maybe the portable version does too.

  • 10.5.8 Server, Amavisd 2.6.4 crahing perl, with BerkeleyDB Problem

By searching the interwebs and discussions here didn't find a solution that worked for me yet.
System Details: Quad intel Xserve, 10.5.8 Server (Security Update 2009-005 not yet applied.)
Seems to have started this night around 2am.
Amavisd-new 2.6.4 will not accept transport anymore. Logs the well known
Sep 16 15:23:00 mail postfix/qmgr[3853]: warning: connect to transport smtp-amavis: Connection refused
    Sep 16 15:23:12 mail deliver[3869]: connect(/var/imap/socket/lmtp) failed: Connection refused
    messages to the log.
Tried rebuilding amasid-new and all the needed perl modules. CPAN worked well, yet perl seems to crash anytime amavisd will access a BerkelyDB from cyrus.
SMTP in seems to work fine, SMTP out as well, transport from postfix to cyrus via amavisd is still broken. My own user account can send and even receive mails without a problem, which stumps me a little. I only have that user for testing purposes, so it doesn't carry any amount of email beyond test mails, counting less than 100 messages.
I have already checked for privileges and quota problems with the .db.
Repairing the Database with ServerAdmin hasn't helped, as did a reconstruct with ServerAdmin. I'm still trying to avoid full mailbox rebuilds. I'd prefer rebuilding only the problematic mailboxes and not all mailboxes to have a few as possible users with all their unread status reset.
For a quick fix, I'd like to be able to deliver mails to the users boxes so they get their mails for the moment, seems they are able to send without problems. This should buy me a little more time until I can fix it all properly.
Turning off Spam and Virus filtering doesn't help the delivery, which I expected it would. doesn't this time.
How can I find out which user's mailboxes are corrupted so I can only completely rebuild the ones really needed? I'm willing to jump through substantial hoops to prevent the need to do a full server mailbox rebuild. (ca. 90GB of mails in total… would take a looong time and upset the users.)
I can test everything and can of course provide any more details you might need to help me.
This setup is quite modified from Apple's stock setup mostly following pterobyte's excellent recommendations and tutorials for improvement.
    Best regards
    Pepi
This is what the mail system logs when starting up:

    Hi Alex,
    thanks for chiming in!
I'm quite confident, that nobody installed BerkeleyDB at 2am on that server. Neither on purpose nor accidentally.
Just for the record… the usual suspects have be checked as well:
I've checked the filesystem, and it seems to be ok.
I've repaired privileges, and they seem to be ok.
I've used mailbfr to rebuild each and every mailbox. (-m)
I've used mailbfr to repair mail system privs and quota. (-o, -q)
The system has plenty of freespace on all drives.
Additional info about the current behavior:
I've turned off virus and spam filtering for the moment. Mails can be sent and do get delivered for all the accounts I've tested. The ones that are already in the queue do not get delivered. I've even tried to manually flush the queue, though postfix usually never needs that and know best when to do what. Anyway it didn't convince postfix to deliver the queued mails.
From the logs I can see that cyrus complains about a critical database condition in

  • I have a website that needs an old version of java to run, how can I make that happen?

for work I have to access an ADP website to do my timesheet, for some reason this website wants java plugin 1.5.0_09, is there a way to get this and run it on mozilla?

You're gonna need a Firefox 3.5 version to use that old version of Java, Firefox 3,6 and newer versions require Java 1.6.0_10 or higher with the Next Generation plugin.
Probably best to use [http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Ed./Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Edition%203.5.19/ Portable Firefox 3.5.19] installed to your hard drive, so you don't mess up your current Firefox installation. The Portable version will install in its' own folder set, with its' own Profile.
See [http://portableapps.com/forums/support/firefox_portable Portable Apps support] for details on installing that older version of Java.

  • IBook G4  LCD screen broken

The LCD screen of my iBook G4 was smashed in an accident. The laptop works fine but the screen is broken. What is the best option for replacing the screen? Is there any option in India?
    Harisakhee
    iBook G4 12.1''

Since accidental damages are not covered under basic AppleCare or the
optional extended service there; you will have to find a reseller who can
do the work and not adversely affect the remaining hardware. So, to say
they should be qualified in repair as any Apple repair would require.
There is an AppleAsia site and perhaps the link I found there can be of
help in narrowing a search for a qualified reseller / repair center not too
far from your location. India is covered under the AppleAsia region, so
that may be a matter of cost and time; depending on distances and the
cost of parts. Some authorized repair centers may have a second parts
computer, (perhaps with different damage?) and if so, you may get a
break -bad pun- on the cost of a display and lid, plus hinge, etc; when
compared to full retail. But I'd expect a first-rate repair if you go to an
authorized Apple reseller with an adjacent repair center; or one they use.
In some localities, the repair still may be routed to Apple; if they have
no one qualified to do them and if parts availability is limited there.
    AppleAsia: http://www.asia.apple.com/buy/reseller/ (general finder page)
    Apple/India Portable sales/support/service:
    http://www.asia.apple.com/buy/reseller/FMPro
There may be other qualified technicians, but to restore an iBookG4
may be a judgement call; and the total costs not under warranty may
be prohibitive in some locations. I wish you well in your quest...

  • ClamAV appears to be unstable after 10.5.3 update

Following the 10.5.3 update, I've now had my xserver auto-restart on 2 occasions (this is starting to follow an almost daily trend!). Each time, clamd is the current thread when the CPU ceases to respond to interrupts. As a result, I'm presuming ClamAV is the culprit.
Each time the server restarts there is typically some form of disc corruption (on the first restart a scanned SPAM email overwrote a plist file; on the second restart the RAID array needed some TLC (this may have been related to a database update that occurred within a nearby log timeframe?)). To avoid any further issues (or worse!), I've currently switched off all virus scanning until I have a better handle on what is happening.
Does anyone have any tips on how best to work around or debug this issue?
    Many thanks,
    Carl.

Same exact issue. Help me out here if someone knows the internal workings to clamav, amavis, and cyrus. I still consider myself a n00bie in this arena, but trying to learn fast. Have posted logs and described as much as possible without writing a novel here below. Message me if you want more info, I'm happy to share.
    Story:
Running 10.5.2 for a few months, all is working fine with the server, with mail. Not a heavy load, but about 25 user accounts most running on IMAP few on POP. Normal GUI setup for the most part from what I'm aware of. Junkmail filtering, learning, virus scanning, virtual hosting setup even and all working well. This is a brand new X-Serve, with clean install on it. No other things running on it, no 3rd party software. All Apple hardware, software, memory. Server monitor watches all hardware constantly for any anomalies.
Did 10.5.3 update last Friday at noon. Restart at noonish, all still works great.
Then server crashes (reboots on it's own) at 9:30 PM. Once the server gets back up and running Amavis seems to be failing and the SMTP logs show all email as "connection refused" (clients i think, lost these particular logs since this occurred since the newer ones overwrote the older ones).
FYI: I get no data or RAID problems like Cari reported thankfully and sorry to hear that Cari. Just my mail stops working and of course the server reboots which I'd like to prevent from happening again.
So I worriedly restarted the mail service through the GUI, preying it will just fix itself, and thankfully it did; all is fine again and my mail works great.
Server works fine through Saturday and Sunday, then at 3:30 PM again crash, reboot. Amavis not delivering again, getting connection refused messages. Restart mail services through GUI and all works again.
So using my n00bish postfix, cyrus, amavis, and clamav knowledge, it seemed as I had a corrupted cyrus database according to my logs (below). So I used mailbfr (as well as the GUI reconstruct cause I have one mailbox still that shows a negative value in server admin GUI which is another issue I'll work on later) and reconstructed the cyrus stuff. Before I had done this I was getting IOError's in my system logs "IOERROR: user.jonjones zero index/expunge record 10/207". Now these errors don't show up any longer and ... so far ... server has yet to crash *knocks on wood*
So to you mail guru's out there, my relevant logs are below (I think). Any of you have any ideas, is it related to the cyrus stuff or am I way off base?
And to you Cari and ruzz, or anyone else with this issue, are you experiencing the same things in your logs as far as "IOERROR's" on your user's mailboxes or cyrus messages talking about corruption? Maybe just a reconstruct is needed to fix this issue? Maybe it's not even related, again I don't know enough about how these services talk to each other, so I apologize if I sound dumb or just not know enough to talk about this intelligently.
    Here are my logs:

    and so and so on.
The "Operation not permitted at /usr/bin/amavisd line 11203." only happens after the crash. Does not happen after mail services have been manually restarted.
I searched the net for the past 2 days on this and just never got around to posting anything yet. Ran across this article when looking for information on outdated clamav messages and whether or not I should bother upgrading it and how to upgrade it (figured this may take care of the issue since I hadn't found anything as of yet).
Thank you to any who read through all that mess and to any who can shed some light on this issue,
    Jessee

  • Clamav not updating at expected times after update

I am running an intel xserve macosx server 10.4.10
    my clamav was version 0.88.5
I updated clamav this morning to 0.91.1 using the tutorial from http://osx.topicdesk.com (I am still using clamscan and haven't made the changes to use clamd)
My clamav was set to update 8 times a day, ie every three hours.
However as of time of writing the system still hasn't checked for new updates.
It appears that /etc/freshclam.conf is set to 12 times a day (see below), whilst the SA GUI is still showing 8 times. Where does it get the frequency from?
Also /var/log/freshclam.log appears to show using clamav 0.91.1,
    where clamscan --version
    ClamAV 0.88.5/4107/Wed Aug 29 17:16:42 2007
Can someone tell me if I have made a config error. How do I get freshclam to start updating again at the required intervals?

If you followed my tutorial and used the support files referenced by it, then freshclam is set to update 3 times a day (which is more than enough).
If you are not happy with that, edit:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/net.clamav.freshclam.plist
and change the value below "-c".
    When done issue:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/net.clamav.freshclam.plist
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/net.clamav.freshclam.plist

  • Advantages of VISA over GPIB

i want to know advantages of VISA over GPIB in labview when we connect our pc with a device which has GPIB interface
what could be reason behind using VISA programming
i want atleast 5 advantages of visa over GPIB .
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
1.VISA Write is equivalent to a GPIB write except the VISA Write returns a VISA Reference Out that is much easier to use. You pass that to the next VISA function instead of wiring a GPIB address to all. This will make your blockdiagram cleaner.
2.portability:-VISA supports GPIB, Serial, Ethernet, USB, PXI, VXI, and PCI. So, with a single piece of code, you can support all of the interfaces and even GPIB controllers from different vendors.
3.VISA supports aliases. You can assign logical names to the resources. Instead of trying to remember the GPIB address in a rack full of instruments, you can reference 'DMM', 'Scope', etc.
    4. If you are programming multiple devices that communicate over more than one bus type, it might be easier to use VISA for your entire system.
    5. In VISA, you must always call viEnableEvent() prior to being allowed to receive events, this is required in VISA to avoid the race condition of trying to wait on events for which the hardware may not be enabled.
6.The VISA Resource Control allows you to pick from a list of available resources.
        Enough
    Thanks as kudos only

Clearly there are a number of issues here.
The one standout, though, is the line:
    16.12.10 22:21:11 com.apple.WindowServer161 Thu Dec 16 22:21:11 mobileserver1.dyndns.org WindowServer161 <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
This implies to me that you've named your machine 'mobileserver1.dyndns.org'. I'm going out on a limb here and will say that's probably not correct.
Unless you're actually in the dyndns.org domain you should not give your machine a hostname (or domain name) that maps to this domain. Sure, after setup you might choose to leverage DynDNS's service to map that name to your public IP address, but that does not mean this machine is part of dyndns.org's domain. It isn't, and setting your machine up in this way is doomed to failure.
You should use a private domain for your server. If you have your own domain registered use that, otherwise make up a domain using a private domain (common examples include things like .local, .private, .internal, etc., so 'mobileserver1.cabinet.private' would be valid).
I don't know that's the crux of most of your problems, but if you're just starting out on getting your server running, having valid DNS from the get go is going to make your life so much easier.

  • Server log showing problems with Mail Server

Ok, so I followed the instructions in that PDF about how to make virtual mail users in 10.5.1 since they are broken. So I did it in the WGM and the Postfix stuff as the document said. Now I get all these errors in the server log and I have no idea how to fix the problem or if what I did was even done right. Here is the error log below:

I did what you said and I don't see all those weird messages anymore, but we switched over our MX records today to our mail server in hopes that it would all work and now no one can get their mail. I can log into the mail server no problem via IMAP, but to send messages is not working. And those using POP don't seem to work at all. Even to send messages the Server is rejecting saying that my messages isn't addresed right. Which it is. I can't even send something to myself. I'm trying not to be frustrated with this thing. I'm just not sure what to do since we have a whole bunch of people needing mail and it doesn't seem to be working and I'm not a mail server expert. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Please recommend technology to use

I'm planning on writing an app that is web-based but requires a fairly extensive GUI running on the client side. I want the ability to develop something as powerful as a SWING-based GUI, i.e. not just HTML buttons and textboxes. I also need the ability to upload multiple, large files from the client to the server, and will be using some sort of database solution (probably MySQL, though I'm flexible on this).
Can someone recommend a solution for me? I really want a seamless solution that installs/runs automatically without requiring the client to download a bunch of stuff and install/reboot multiple times. Even a regular Java/SWING app would be fine if it could launch automatically from the website. But if there's a better Java technology with a little more web-based integration to make my file uploads work easily, etc., that might be the way to go.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dustin

I was actually thinking about using web start. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need to download some kind of web start client first in order to use it? I was hoping for something a little more seamless, but if that's really my only option, I guess I could consider it.
Just curious, what aspect of JSP doesn't meet my requirements? Can I develop as extensive of a GUI with JSP, and also doing things like multiple file uploads, etc? I've seen some multi file upload hacks out there, mainly using html + cgi, that are so cumbersome to use for, say, 100 files, that I don't consider them an option.
I'm thinking I've seen some Active X stuff that runs automatically, something like that for Java would be great. I really dont' want to go the MS route, because I want portability and support in various browsers, not just IE. But I also don't want to get wrapped up with browser behavior issues, thus developing a SWING GUI is preferable to html buttons, not to mention I don't think an html-based solution has all the GUI features I need (like a tree browser for example).

  • Problem playing with 2 axioms 49 2nd generation with MainStage

I play in a band. Me and another member are using the same controller attached to MainStage: Axiom 49 2nd generation.
At first we configured the layout mode with 2 keyboards and two gruop of percussion pads. Then we assign each keyboard to both axiom controlllers and we named them different. then we did the same with the percussion pads, but in layout mode we couldn't find a way to name them.
With the keyboard we found mainstage confused them a lot, and each time we started MainStage we had to reassing all the layout again. So we changed the midi channels each axiom was using: one of them to midi channel 1, the other to channel 2. No problem after that, the only thing is that we have to turn both on after starting the software.
But the pads.....one of them never worked. In editing mode, we created two channels to play the two group of pads simultaneously (as we do with the keyboards). In each "midi in" tab, we tried to asign one of the pads. The pop-up menu give us the chance to assign mine. It was shown as: "axiom USB In Axiom 49 (10)".
But as we went to the other channel to assign my mate's group of pads, we couldn't find it..in the pop-up menu these are the only options:
    RAKEL   (my keyboard)
axiom USB In Axiom 49 (1) 2 (my keyboard again)
axiom USB In Axiom 49 (10) (my pads)
    JONAY  (the other keyboard)
    multitimbric
We tried with the multitimbric option but when I click the 11 midi channel in the pop-up menu, it shows again this four options.
    RAKEL   (my keyboard)
axiom USB In Axiom 49 (1) 2 (my keyboard again)
axiom USB In Axiom 49 (10) (my pads)
    JONAY  (the other keyboard)
We tried to change midi channels straight with the axiom (the same we did with the keyboards): for me the pads were still emiting to midi channel 10 and for him we changed the group of pads to midi channel 11 (didn't work), and we tried again changing the channel to 9. Nothing works, it just doesn't show in the pop-up menu, although they are assing perfectly in the layout mode and in the edit mode the notes we play with pads are shown in the input midi screen....
Could anyone help us?...is driving us mad and there's not too much information at the user manual or forums.
Thanks in advance! I really appreciate your attention

Open the Overdrive Help tab and search on "transfer" or "iTunes". You'll get selections that explain the WMA files work fine and will walk you through it. Among other things it will tell you:
"If you plan to transfer OverDrive WMA Audiobooks, OverDrive WMA Music, and/or OverDrive WMV Video to a portable device, you may want to verify that the portable device supports content delivered in the DRM-protected Windows Media format... many OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and OverDrive WMA Music titles can be transferred to Apple devices (where permitted by publisher)."
You must do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite (the Windows Media Player Security Update is also in the Overdrive Tools menu, but I could not get it update). Once updated, with the iPod or other mobile device connected to your computer and iTunes open, go to the Summary pane for your iPod or other device in iTunes and click the "Manually manage music and videos" box.
Then go to Overdive, select the book, music or video and click the Transfer button. Select some or all the chapters you want to transfer. It will find the mobile device and begin.

  • IP BASED STRATEGIES ON 10G AS  INSTALLATION

    Hello everybody,
First i will install Redhat Linux AS 2.1 to my laptop which has a very good configuration and then I want to install 10g AS.
    My Prequisites:
-First i have to install infrastructure my applications correctly run.
-Also i will install Business Intelligence forms
Now i have some questions about which install strategies can be determined and which advantages 10G provides to me about especially ip change conditions.
1 - I can install on a static ip but sometimes i have to attend some demos so if i attach my laptop to a network which uses DHCP what should i do?Is this portability between static ip and DHCP really fully supported?
2 - Let's say i installed 10gAs on a static ip with a static hostname but if i attach my laptop to a domain in a company which uses DHCP what problems occur?
Is This portabilitiy supported on Oracle 10gAS?
Also if my laptop moves from one domain to another domain this portability is supported?
3 - Can i directly install 10gAS while i was in domain of my network? If yes after that can i change to static ip?
4 - IS ip change a bottleneck in oracle10G like previous version 9iAS?
    Sincerely,
    Mustafa

Here are my responses to your questions:
1 - I can install on a static ip but sometimes i have to attend some demos so if i attach my laptop to a network which uses DHCP what should i do?Is this portability between static ip and DHCP really fully supported?
--> Yes, this is supported and the way to change AS Configuration is to run the IP/Hostname change scripts.
2 - Let's say i installed 10gAs on a static ip with a static hostname but if i attach my laptop to a domain in a company which uses DHCP what problems occur?
--> These are all documented in the installation and administrator's guide. This is called on/off network installation.
Is This portabilitiy supported on Oracle 10gAS?--> Yes supported.
Also if my laptop moves from one domain to another domain this portability is supported?
--> Hostname change might include just domain part of the hostname change. So yes, this is supported. Please refer to installation and admin guide.
3 - Can i directly install 10gAS while i was in domain of my network? If yes after that can i change to static ip?
--> This should be possible as well.
4 - IS ip change a bottleneck in oracle10G like previous version 9iAS?
    --> No it is not.
