Possible bug in Illustrator CS4 text anti-aliasing in Save for Web and Devices

Hello all,
This could be a bug... if so, I'd be happy to add it to Wade's bug list a few messages down the stream.
Here's what's happening: when I create small text using a very thin font (in this case, Helvetica Neue Light), the Pixel Preview gives a noticeably different anti-aliasing solution to the actual output from Save for Web & Devices. I'm attaching an original .AI file as well as a screenshots of what I'm getting in both situations.
I'd really prefer the Save for Web and Devices output to look exactly like the Pixel Preview. The font looks great in Illustrator but loses a lot of its punch when I Save for Web.
---Peter

In the Svae for Web and Device  under the image tab where it says art Optimize that is a drop down menu select Type Optimize as such
htis is what it lloks like in AI and a browser when you choose Type Optimize
This the difference between Art Optimized and Type Optimize
That is what is happening to you you are selcting Art Optimize and that is the reason when you choose art optimize aqnd you rraster the image it looks right to you.

  • Save for Web and Devices (Illustrator style?)

Ive used the slice tool to mark out the images for exporting
    from my Fireworks document.
Does Fireworks have a 'Save for Web and Devices' feature like
Illustrator does? I want to have the 4-up display where you can see
the original image and file size in one section and use the others
to vary the JEPG/ GIF settings to get the best combination of file
size and image quality. I want to be able to save different
settings for each slice (as you can do in Illustrator).
I cant find this feature but it seems weird that a web image
optimization program wouldn't have it. I tired opening my file with
Illustrator and Photoshop but the slices wernt imported aswell.
Ive got CS3, is this option in CS4?
    thanks

FW bypasses the extra step used by PS and AI. In the main FW
    window,
choose 4-Up. Select the slice you want to optimize and set
    your
optimization settings via the Optimize panel. Everything bu
    the selected
sliced will be screened back a bit, so you focus on the
    active slice. It
will change on screen as you alter the optimize settings.
If you want to optimize several slices using the same
    settings,
    shift+click to select them.
When you're done, choose File > Export. Make sure to set
    Images Only as
your Export option and in the Slices field choose Export
    Slices. If you
want all slices exported, make sure that Export Selected
    Slices is NOT
    checked.
If you don't want unsliced areas also exported, also make
    sure Include
areas without slices is not checked.

  • When i 'save for web and devices' in illustrator, the resulting jpg is cropped

Has anyone run into this before?  I'm trying to 'save for web and devices" in illustrator, but the resulting jpg doesn't show the whole artboard.  its cropped off some of the top and bottom.  my file is a simple box with text inside.  no other graphical elements of any kind.

Thanks Monika.  I have a 3.25x3" artboard that has just text on it.  I selected "save for web and devices" and the preview window shows the artboard smaller than actual size so some of the text is cut off or pushed to the edge.  I saved it just to see what would happen and the resulting file is just as was with the preview.  I also tried doing a 'save as' for the jpg and same result.  Oddly, I outlined the artboard with a box and the jpg came out fine.  Any ideas?

  • When I save for web and device in Illustrator, I see all the pixels... What is wrong?

I have created a vector image. When I save for web and device in Illustrator, the image does not come out clear even if I'm saving the image the same size as the artboard. I can see the coutours (pixels)... I've opened the file on another computer and everything is perfect. What is wrong on my computer?
I have reinstalled the program and did all the updates. What else can I try?
    Thank you!

So that you know next time that option is no longer available so to speack it is now under a dropdown wiht the default none then Type Optimized or Art Optimized in CS 5 and operhaps CS 4 as well

  • Possible Problem with Save for Web and Devices?

II've come here to the forum for some insight on why a gif file created by save for web and devices command is not showing up as an image in an uploading dialog box for my website.  I'm buildiing my website with word press and a custom freelancer theme.  I've created a customized header with Illustrator and have been saving the file with the save for web and devices command.  Once I have my gif file, I go to my theme uploader and try to upload the gif image and place it on my homepage.  I've not had any problems with doing this until yesterday, when I tried to upload an updated file.  What usually happens is that the thumbnail image shows up in the dialog box, I select my options, and click insert.  But what's started happening yesterday is that the thumbnail does not show up, unless I click on edit image.  This makes no difference, as when I click insert and go to my homepage and refresh it, the header doesn't show up.  I've tried working with the developer of the theme to resolve this problem and so far we've not found a solution.  I've tried to upload the header with different file types: jpg, png, tiff, but they don't work.  I thought I'd come here to see if anyone might have some suggestions.  The problem may not be with Illustrator's save for web and devices, but I thought I'd give this forum a shot.  Thanks for any and all respones. :[

    CT,
If you can see and open the GIF/whatever (with any viewing application), the Illustrator Save for Web&Devices works. If not, you may ask about it in the Illustrator forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/illustrator/illustrator_general?view=discussions
If the image is there, to have the issue solved quickly, I believe you should ask in a forum covering the web building application.

  • Illustrator CS5 15.0.2 crash when Save for Web and Devices (Mac)

    Hi baffled with this.
When Saving for Web and Devices in Illustrator CS5 (15.0.2), the application now freezes and has to be force quit.
HOWEVER if I delete the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder all works well until I quit the application, then the freeze will happen again. I had this happen before so under the advice of Adobe I created a new user and all was fine for that user so I transferred everything across... a laborious task.
So my question now is why now?... what has triggered this AGAIN?...
    Hope you can help... anyone.
    Running:
    Mac OS X 10.6.6
    Mac Pro tower.
    Note:
    have uninstalled, reinstalled, updated 15.0.1 - 15.0.2
    have deleted all font caches
have deleted everything... that could be related...
HOWEVER have narrowed it down to the 'Adobe Illustrator Prefs' file in the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder
Please too note this is not the folder permissions issue, am aware of that and have thoroughly checked all permissions, ran disk utility and disk warrior.
    thanks

If you use cocktail I suggest you get rid of it it can cause serious problems if you select the wrong settings, instead download ONYXwhich is free and will not harm your system or corrupt anything by deleting something you actually need.
I hit the wrong setting using cocktail and it locked me out of all of the hard drives installed or connected to my Mac it is very dangerous. And I cannot imagine a reason for a setting that would protect your hard drives from yourself to the point of not recognizing your own password.
I know it cost money and has advanced settings but having the ability to kill your system is crazy.
Also to repair your permissions use the disk utility or ONYX as the permissions can become changed when installing software or if cocktail changes it locking you out of folders etc.

  • Type anti-aliasing in Save For Web CS5

    Hi,
Has anyone found a way to get the type anti-aliasing settings to maintain their appearences in Save For Web.
The type looks very different as if its lost the settings when I go to save it.
    Thanks!

Well I set the type to Sharp in the anti-alias settings in the Character dialog.
When I go save for web regardless of the output settings the aliasing gets all blurry like it never was set.

  • Saving Sliced files in Illustrator CS6 like it was in CS5 "Save for web and devices" gone?

    Hello,
I used to save all my slices in CS5 and it would give me the option to save for web and devices, then when I was in there it would let me choose the option at the bottom Other... then I could go in and save it as a html and images and then it would automatically make div's for me when I brought it in to dreamweaver.  Where did this option go in CS6?  Can someone help I am on a big deadline, and I lost all my work transfering it back into cs5 to try it there like I used to.  Attached is a .png to show what I mean.
    Thank you,
    DariusB
These options are not here in CS6 and I cant find it.  I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks again.

    Hi,
There have been some other changes too - here is the link to the article that describes the changes: http://blogs.adobe.com/ivandavid/illustrator_cs6_save_for_web/.

  • Strange white lines sometimes occur when saving 'for web and devices' in Illustrator?

    Hi
Strange white lines sometimes occur across my documents, when saving 'for web and devices' in Illustrator CS5 (on the right side of the black logo below). Does anyone know how to avoid this please??
    Thank you so much.

    LSM,
    The link seems broken.

  • PS CS4 Extended 64bit Crashes on Save for Web Every Time

    Hi All,
Been using CS4 64bit on this machine for months without any problems then suddenly last week it crashed every time I wanted to Save for Web. It continues to do so.
    Intel Core 2 Quad 2.50Ghz
4Gb Ram (2Gb assigned to PS)
    NVidia Geforce 8400 GS
    OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    PS CS4 ver: 11.0.2
I have reset the preferences (Ctrl Alt) several times and have not installed any plugins recently. The 32bit version works fine. The only thing I haven't done is re-install the software. Looking around this seems an issue without an answer, but I'll give it go here with the slim hope of a resolution.
From this forum, even CS5 seems to have the same problem in 64bit. Not very promising!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regs,
    SO

Well the 11.0.1 patch was essential for some user problems and there is also 11.0.2 now whichI believe is primarily a security update with some other bug-fixes.
    So it's your choice!

  • Save for web and using a alpha channel to optimise a jpg? Is it missing in CS4/5+ ?

    Hi guys,
I have just tried to do an old technique I used to use to reduce the szie of big background images, and they was to make a alpha channel and specify which areas of the image you want to be kept at the highest quality and what areas you wanted it to be low quality.
I dont seem to be able to find it anywhere in the "Save for web" screen.
This post here suggests it might have been dumped after CS3???
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/370291
    Any help would be great

As far as i know those features were removed from Save for Web after cs3.

  • CS5 bug rendering anti-aliased text in 'Save for web'

Seems like there's a bit of a bug when using 'Save for web and devices' with thin weights of type in CS5 for Mac. Although thin type looks fine while working in Illustrator, as soon as you enter the 'Save for web' dialogue, it gets badly mangled. Looks like this issue has been present at least since CS4. It does not happen in Photoshop. It looks particularly bad for light text on a dark background.
Some people may say "sure, Illustrator is not really meant for intensive bitmap work". However, with features like 'pixel preview' and 'snap to pixel', Illustrator has (generally) become a very viable tool for web design, and personally I much prefer it to Photoshop. It is also clear that Adobe intends it to be usable in this manner. So the anti-aliasing render bug is definitely a problem. Just surprised they didn't address it when CS5 was born.
I put up some example images on http://www.thesheep.co.uk/2011/06/24/illustrator-save-for-web-anti-aliasing-problems/ to illustrate the problem.
Does anyone have any clever work-arounds for this? It's a bit annoying to have to move stuff over to PS before exporting, but maybe that's what I have to do. Hopefully Adobe will address this soon.

    Hi,
I am experiencing this same problem of pixelated gifs when I use the "save for web" dialog from Illustrator, but this solution has not worked for me. I have tried the trick of using type-optimized anti-aliasing, but it doesn't change the output at all. I've done this from within the "Image size" tab as well as through Effect>Rasterize>Options)Anti-aliasing: Type Optimized. My image is a logo made entirely from text, although for some of it I used "outline path", so I'm not sure if it still qualifies as text...I'm a newbie at this stuff, so the technical details are still quite opaque to me.
Does anyone know of a solution to this that does not require me to add Photoshop to my workflow?
    I'm using Illustrator in CS5, version 15.0.2.
    Thanks in advance
    Jonathan

  • CS3 Save for Web bugs - No answer from Adobe in all forum posts

I just upgraded to Illustrator 13.0.02 and the problem is the same: Slice names and output settings are not remembered/saved like all previous AI versions.
I don't understand why this post was closed: CS3 Save for Web Problems
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.3bc41aeb.
and this one: "Save for Web" names of frames vanish
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc4cd31/2
It is the same as: AI CS3 - Save for Web & Devises image name problem
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.3c057eab
Concerning slice name: It looks like they now have to be saved via drop down menus in order for Illustrator to remember the slice names for export again: "Object - Slice - Slice Options, and then in Save for Web, set the Output Settings for Saving Files"
In my opinion this is incredibly poor UI design. In prior versions of Illustrator, I would save the names in the Save for Web dialog box by simply double clicking the slice frame, and it would remember the names of my slices for export again.
Clicking through drop down menus just to name a slice is inefficient compared to just double clicking a slice frame to name the slice.

This is a bit of an old thread, but I too have recently discovered this problem in working with AI CS3.
I contacted Adobe support with the question. I asked them why it was not possible to select and optimize individual slices in the Save for Web and Devices dialog in CS3, and then maintain those settings after saving the slices or clicking "Done"... even though that very feature was available and working in CS2.
Adobe's answer was, quite simply, that they have ceased any development on CS3, including bug fixes, and that anyone who wants the problem fixes would have to buy CS4 in order to "fix" the problem.
In short, they are quite aware of the problem, but would rather have us pay for a new product in order to have it fixed, than to pay a programmer to spend a few hours or a few days in tracking down the problem and getting it sorted out. This is their short-term solution to a long-term problem.
There is a workaround to the slice naming, as you have found - name the slices from the Object - Slice - Slice Options menu. It's a royal PITA, I know, but it does maintain the slice name settings.
However, there is no real workaround to save the optimization and output settings (such as color tables and JPEG/GIF/PNG settings) for each slice. It's a completely broken feature, or in Adobe's own words, "a problem". A big fat bug. Let us not mince words here - it is technical and corporate incompetency. Technical incompetency can be excused - publishing a new build will fix the problem. But corporate incompetency, which tells the programmers that they don't need to fix the problem for "marketing" reasons, is totally inexcusable.
It doesn't cost Adobe anything to just shelve a problem... at least, not now. But I refuse to buy Illustrator CS4 as a result, because I don't want to give in to their ineptitude and lack of attention to the customer in this case. Which costs them more now, to pay the programmer to fix the error and then publish a new build on their web server... or to tell the customer that the problem won't be fixed and to buy the newest version? You do the math. Read 'em and weep.
Makes you want to migrate to Fireworks for web comp design, doesn't it. At least Illustrator has an excuse - it's an all-purpose vector graphics application, not specifically a web comp design app. If this were Fireworks, on the other hand, I think that there would be oodles of furious programmers screaming colorful obscenities at Adobe's front door.
I really like Illustrator for what it does, but I'm not using CS3 for any more web comps after this.

  • Illustrator CS5 - Save for Web

    Hi,
In Illustrator CS4 when I create a graphic on my artboard and choose Save for Web, the 'export area' is trimmed to fit the artwork exactly.
After upgrading to CS5, this no longer happens and I have to adjust the size of the artboard manually before using Save for Web.
Is there a preference somewhere that changes this behaviour or is this new & expected?
    cheers,
    kevin

    Hi Jacob,
Yes this is still possible - but still an extra couple of steps vs just hitting Command+Option+Shift+S
I can't find a specific preference for this in CS4 - yet I'm still able to Save for Web and get trimmed art (I just reconfirmed).
    Interesting & annoying...
It just occurred to me that I could create a custom keyboard shortcut -  so I assigned Command+Option+Shift+1 to Object->Artboards->Fit To Selected Art
So now 2 key combos give me the same result.
    cheers
