Possible iBook G4 Backlight issue??

Hello All - Hope everyone had a great Holiday.
Here is my issue, I hope someone can give me some advice.
I am working with an iBook G4 1.07Ghz Model Number - UV4280JMR73 (if that helps?)
The computer really works like a champ most of the time. After running the computer for a short period of time (5-10mins) if you move the screen to re adjust the angle or just move the computer and the screen jiggles the screen goes black. If you look close in the right light you can still see the desktop and everything works fine, which I am assuming is a backlight issue. However, if you close the lid and let the comp go to sleep for 30secs - 1 min and than open it back up it boots right back up and the screen comes on just as bright as it should be and again if you jiggle the screen it goes dark again.
At first I was thinking that the CCFLs were bad but after researching a bit it seems that those guys either go out and never come back on, or work fine. I have thought about a loose connection but if that was the case you would assume that if you kept jiggling the screen than it would come back on, right??? Also it wouldnt make since because it all works like normal once you close the lid for a min or so.
Any thoughts???? I am pretty technically inclined and am not afraid to tear this bad boy apart. I work on BMWs for a living...
Let me know what your thoughts are and any possible fixs and also if you know of a good place to buy parts if I need them and also if there is a walk through on the web that you know of.

Well like S.U. says, it sounds like the inverter cable. Typically this breaks near the hinge point. I've repaired two like that. I found the open by continuity testing from the inverter board to the plug on the logic board. Once I found the open cable I could make it come back by pushing it together at the break point. I then opened it up, re soldered it and used shrink tubing to re insulate the break point. I then reinstalled the coil flex or silver sleeve and put it back together.
The danger in having an open there is that it can short out and kill the inverter driver (for want of a better word). If you're lucky it will just take out the fuse in that area. I repaired one like that and had no idea what that fuse was (read open) but compared it to another one that wasn't burnt and bridged it with a .125 (I think) fuse filament.

Very strange backlight issue

I have a 600mhz (16 VRAM) iBook that I'm trying to fix for a friend. It has a strange backlight issue. Everytime the ibook is started, it chimes, and shows the screen (bright and perfect), but as soon as 9.2 starts to load, the backlight goes out. It is not intermittent, it happens at the exact same time every time I start it up (right when the progress bar starts to move). I reset the PRAM, which caused the computer to now look for a startup device, so all the extra time it takes search, the backlight is fine. Here's what I've tried.
In firewire mode, the backlight never comes on
With a hardware test disc, the backlight never comes on
Reset the PRAM (several times)
Reset the PMU (several times)
Any ideas out there?

As an update, I tried a Mac OS 10.4 startup disc which seemed to work, and the backlight came on with no problems. The machine did freeze on the welcome screen right after I selected english as the language of choice. So I tried a 10.3 disc which yeilds a kernal panic of "Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook 4,3". After this, I tried a 9.2.2 disc which boots (takes 20 mins to boot) and when I try to load the installer I receive a "this program can not run on this machine", and it closes. This really seems like a strange problem. Any ideas?

Possibility of reversing Goods issue and delivery of one line item

Is there a possibility of reversing Goods issue for only one line item and also the delviery for that line item so that i can make changes in the sales order for that line item only.

Basically the issue is in the sales order there are around 90 line items out of which most of them has been processed the delivery and GI and even invoices has been made for some.
While doing so, there are about 5-6 delivery docs has been created for the 90 line items.
Now, we need to change some data for few line items , for this we dont want to do reversal for all the line items and again do a delivery and PGI as these line items are in various delivery docs.
Let me know , if there is anyother way of doing it or we should follow the normal process of doing it all again.

Ipod Touch 2g Backlight Issue

Hello all. I have a Ipod Touch 2g with a backlight issue. The screen is readable and all functions except the backlight work fine, but no backlight. No water damage or recent drops. I did a restore and the backlight started working again, but after my next sync and reboot the backlight stopped working again. To me this does not seem like a hardware problem. Are there any known issues with the newest version of the OS that might have caused this? Any ideas on a fix?

Interestingly, I just tried to update my applications through the App store on my ipod. The connection failed and suddenly the backlight came back on. Nothing new happened. I didn't move it, tap it, or anything else. This is very odd.

Tecra A2 backlight issue - image is very faint

I have a Tecra A2 with a backlight problem.
The LCD is displaying correctly, but without any backlight the image is very faint.
When the laptop is booted the display lights up perfectly for about 3 seconds before turning off. The laptop successsfully boots and can be used with an external monitor. If I now close the lid the laptop backlight lights up again for a few seconds before going off again. I have tried a new backlight inverter which had no effect. The lid closed sensor is the magnetic type (presumably a reed relay) and measures 100Kohms when open? and 0 ohms when closed.
Could this 100K be the problem?
Has anyone experienced any of these symptons or does anyone have any backlight inverter data, i'm wondering if I have a second faulty inverter.
Could this be a faulty FL backlight issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For me it looks like the faulty FL-inverter too
You said that the display on the external monitor looks fine. So we can eliminate a GPU fault.
I think your should contact the ASP in your country. The technician should check the faulty part (probably FL inverter) and should replace it with a new, compatible one.

I see you have already replaced the one FL inverter and the issue still appears hmm to be honest I believe you have used a wrong one but who knows nothing is impossible.
So ask the ASP technician for the further handling

Strange iBook G3 battery issue

I have an iBook G3 FireWire model which won't recognise its battery. It displays as 5% charged with the "fully charged" icon next to it and the menu saying "Calculating... until full." Unplugging the computer will force it to shut down. The computer's optical drive is broken, so I had to install Tiger via USB. The first time, it worked just fine, charging the battery as normal. The problem arose when I installed some updates (I think it was the 10.4.11 Combo updater) and shut down. Upon restart, it never reached the "Starting Mac OS X" screen, just staying on a light blue screen with a perpetually spinning wheel. After attempting multiple restarts, I unplugged the computer while it was on said screen, and it lost all power just as it does now. I reinstalled Tiger with the same USB and disk image the next day. Both http://reviews.ebay.com/iBook-Clamshell-Battery-Issue?ugid=10000000007193925 and booting into Open Firmware and entering the commands reset-nvram, then set-defaults, then reset-all yield the same result: it will charge to 13%, then stop and say "Calculating... until full." The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years. Some last a little longer; some don't even last that long.
It needs a new battery.

It would seem that it is recognizing the battery; it's just not charging. If an iBook doesn't recognize the battery, there will be an X through the battery icon in the menu bar and the System Profiler wouldn't give you the battery information; it would say "Battery Installed: No".

My MacBook Pro 2011 model has a backlight issue- pls someone help

I have a early 2011 MacBook pro that has a backlight issue, im able to connect it to an external monitor just fine.
Brought it to a repair shop and they swapped the screen including the lvd cable but the problem still exist.
Have already spend a lot of money to no avail. What could be the issue? :(
Apple said it only needs a new screen which doesn't seem to be true.

If it is more than one computer and both chargers are not working I suspect you need to replace.

A Possible Solution to the Issues with QuickTime + Beloved Question Mark.

This is a possible solution to this issue. I have been doing some thinking about this. I have suggested the answer would come from Apple Computer, through an update of "QuickTime". I looked at the applications using the internet. I highlighted them, did a "Find Info" or Apple/Command-I. I decided to check the "Rossetta" box and in my case, better functionality. One thing, make sure you check all of them. I am not jumping up and down and screaming I have the answer. I am just saying it's a possibility. If you want to go this route, let's talk if we run into problems. This is the purpose of the discussion boards.

IBook G4 - Boots, then black screen - not a backlight issue

My iBook g4 12" 1.33 Ghz doesn't want to boot into the system.
1. Start computer (chime sound)
2. Apple logo on grey background appears
3. Spinning wheel below Logo appears
4. Screen flicker, big vertical zigzag appears, black screen (backlight is on)
5. Shift key work (led on/off)
6. Num Lock key works (led on/off)
7. no responses with any other keys on keyboard
What I tried so far
1. Reset PRAM & NVRAM & PMU
2. Put original installer disc in, press C start from DVD - same as above happens
3. Boot from external hard drive with operating system over Firewire - same as above happens
4. Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive
5. Attached an external monitor, which doesn't get a signal
6. Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
7. Tried pressing on the graphic chip, as some forum entries suggest - didn't change anything
8. Start in Safe mode with shift key - no indication that in safe mode, same faults

Don't know what else to try

Your issues seems rather strange. From the statement quoted above, am I to understand that when you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk you are able to see the tests running on the monitor, but when you attempt booting from the install disk you cannot see anything on the monitor? If that is so, it seems rather odd that you can boot from one and not from the other.
Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive.
When you booted in FW-TDM which computer was Target and which was host? Sounds like you were able to use the iBook as the host computer with the other as Target. Try it the other way around with the iBook in Target Mode and the other computer as Host. Then launch Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the iBook, selecting the iBook's HDD (manufacturer's ID) in the sidebar. Post back with results. If you are able to do so download and run SMART Utility - 2.0.2 for a reading on the HDD. I am not sure if it will work with the iBook as a FW drive, but it gives more information about the HDD than Disk Utility, which only gives a Verified or Failed status.

IBook G3 Backlight and sleep issues

About a month ago, I woke my iBook up, and the backlight wasn't on, so I tryed restarting, turning the brightness up, ect. and it still doesn't work. But if I close the lid almoast all the way, the backlight lights up. Also it doesn't go to sleep when I close the lid anymore.
I know that it is either the LCD to Motherboard cable, or the Inverter.
Anyone know what is wrong and what part is bad?

Since the angle of the display is involved, it sounds like the backlight (inverter) cable is being pinched in the hinge.

Dominion Tech in Colchester, Vermont used to do the repair for $79.90, but I'm not sure if that price is still in effect. You could call and ask.

Possible Retina Macbook Keyboard Backlight Issue?

This just happened to me about 20 minutes ago.
I was sitting in my room reading up on some news articles when I noticed that some of my keys on the keyboard were dimmer than the rest. I turned the backlight off and back on again but the problem persisted. I then whacked (Not too hard) the keyboard and noticed they flashed back to their original brightness and then went back down. After a few more hits they came back on. Should I be concerned about this issue?

If this does not help, contact Apple.
MBP is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.
Any hardware related issue should be brought to the attention of Apple.

Acer D255E backlight issues during boot

Having an issue with the backlight during the boot process of my netbook. Screen will go blank for 10-15 seconds before returning. This wouldn't be an issue, but it's sitting on the login screen for a good 5-10 seconds so I'd rather fix it.
This is not a KMS issue, it's the backlight. I can append "nomodeset" to the kernel line and it will still occur. If I shine a flashlight at the screen, I can still see the boot text scrolling.
Checking dmesg, the most interesting line is:

I've tried blacklisting that module with no noticeable change. I've also tried several different acpi options such as "acpi_backlight=video", "acpi_backlight=vendor", and the same with "acpi_display_output". Really puzzled by this one. I've tried playing around with a ton of different acpi options. Only acpi=off prevents this from happening. Also tried upgrading my BIOS to the latest version. Tried several different distros and they all had the same issue, so it's not specific to Arch.
I've noticed the backlight stays off for exactly 10 seconds as if there is a 10 second timeout. If I could figure out where that is, might be possible to just lower the timeout.

IBook boot up issues

Hi All -
iBook G4 running Tiger. We had a problem a few months back where it wouldn't boot up...it would get to the gray Apple screen and just stop. I booted from the Tiger install disk, did a disk repair, and then reinstall Tiger after that (as the disk repair didn't resolve the issue of not booting up even though it found and fixed many issues).
Now same problem again. Won't boot. I can boot from the Tiger install disk, but this time when I run disk repair, it stops a few minutes into the repair and says it can't complete due to an error. I then just try to do an OS re-install, but when it asks for a destination directory I'm not given any options to select. I wouldn't be surprised if my HD is about to die (if it hasn't already), but just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. Furthermore...how can I retrieve files on the HD if we need to go down the path of replacing the HD?

Hi there:
A non-bootable hard disk drive can sometime still be accessed through
use of another computer, and a FireWire 6-pin to 6-pin cable, then boot
the defective computer into FireWire Target Disk Mode to have it appear
as a basic hard disk drive to the second healthy computer so attached.
How to use FireWire Target Disk Mode:

Files could be dragged off the one and into a folder on the healthy Mac
and if need be, burned to CD for later consideration; or moved to an
externally enclosed hard disk drive. If just the hard disk drive is bad,
in the suspect computer, a clone could possibly be made of the bad
computer's drive (via FW Target Disk Mode and Super Duper - or use
Carbon Copy Cloner, since a utility makes cloning easier) and the
content of the unbootable computer's hard disk drive may be able to
run the computer again, (though it could be damaged, as well) from
a new hard disk drive later; since that could be cloned to a new drive.
Short of all that, perhaps a disk utility such as Disk Warrior, or
TechTool Pro, or maybe Drive Genius (appropriate for the OSX)
could rescue the drive itself, or fix it well enough to get everything
you want off of it. To be able to make a clone, through a healthy
computer, using TDM and a clone utility to an external FireWire
bootable hard disk drive, gives you a wide possibility of success.
It also requires some degree of experience for a first-run success.
For just getting data off a semi-failed hard disk drive, sometimes
a utility such as Data Rescue II may help. Some of these run as
a demo, can rescue data, and then you pay to get the unlock key.
With the ability to clone the complete computer contents elsewhere,
and then later restore that bootable system back to the computer,
this also opens the possibility of using Disk Utility from that OS X
bootable installer's menu (not install but just use options in menu)
bar of Installer available almost immediately after boot of installer .
The Disk Utility version in the Installer's menu header options,
can over-write the hard disk drive with zeros, reformat, repair
disk, verify disk, partition a disk, and other things. Could be the
disk drive in the computer has failed beyond these steps. You
can also prepare a replacement hard disk drive using these tools.
Sometimes, a third party disk tool is needed to fix directory or
other issues in software and low-level problems on a hard disk.

IBook G3/ Trackpad Issues/ HDD

Well, I got the OS to work about a few weeks back from reinstalling it, but theres another problem that I'd like to see if it can be fixed.
For a refresher, I purchased this iBook used off eBay and it formerly belonged to a school district in North Carolina. I believe that I am the third owner and the machine is pretty well used (casing kinda scratched up, etc) but the machine functions fine except now I'm starting to get some constant trackpad issues.
The issue is that after the machine has been used for about five minutes or more, the trackpad will start responding incorrectly. It is like my mouse cursor will start floating to the sides of the screens and doesn't wish to stay with my finger patterns. Now, this has been an issue since I bought it however now that I'm looking into putting this machine into actual use I'd like to try and resolve it.
I have a USB Mouse that I will plug in and the mouse works fine. Sometimes when I plug in the USB mouse and unplug it the trackpad acts like normal for a few minutes then goes back to acting abnormally until I restart. There has been periods of times that it seems like the iBook's trackpad will start working again, but as said.. it's very inconsistent.
If possible I'd like to fix this without going into extensive repairs. The trackpad does not appear to be damaged or have any scratches on it, but I cannot verify this machines history as said.
Off topic from the question but the hard drive is also kind of loud in this machine (original 10GB HDD).. when the machine goes to sleep or turns off the hard disk after being idle, its virtually silent. Should I be worried about this?

It could be that the trackpad isn't securely connected. This isn't so likely since it does work sometimes, but it's worth mentioning.
