Possible to boot B&W G3 from mirrored RAID??

Hi all,
I've tried to get my B&W, running server 10.3.9, to boot from a mirrored RAID (RAID 1). So far, I can successfully create the RAID, run the software installer, and choose the RAID with Startup Disk, but upon restart, it doesn't recognize a valid system (flashing system folder/question mark).
There's a tech article that states the B&W G3 won't boot from a striped RAID (RAID 0), but I've not been able to find anything definitive regarding mirrored RAID. Does anyone know for sure (or know where I can find documentation)?
TIA,
Brad
B&W G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   10.3.9 server

Thanks for the info. I had no problem either creating the RAID (successfully in both Disk Utility and Terminal), installing the OS, or selecting the RAID pair as the startup disk. I'm doing this with ATA disks.
Once done, though, the system won't boot from the RAID pair. I know that the B&W open firmware won't allow startup from striped RAID (technical article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58258 applies), but don't know if this applies to mirrored RAID as well.
Has anyone out there successfully booted a B&W G3 from a RAID 1 configuration?

  • 10.3 Server new install won't boot from Mirrored RAID - HELP!!

    Hi all,
I had 10.3 Server running fine on a 450 MHz B&W G3 (home server use, nothing too demanding), when I decided to add a 2nd HD and run the server from a RAID mirror (both 80GB drives). I had problems enabling RAID on the boot drive with diskutil in Terminal, so I decided to rebuild the server. I didn't have much besides the system on it, so backing up data and re-installing isn't a big ordeal (or so I thought).
No problems creating the mirror set once I re-formatted the drives. The install seemed to go fine (10.3.4 on install disk), but upon restart, I got the flashing system folder/question mark. When booting from the install disk, Disk Utility recognizes the RAID, and Startup Disk recognizes the mirror as a viable boot drive and allows me to select it and restart. Same problem, no system found.
When I run diskutil info for the mirror, it lists the mirror volume as Not Bootable.
I've checked the disks with both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior - all looks OK. I've reset PRAM and NVRAM, taken out added PCI cards, and disconnected all FW and USB devices (besides kbd and mouse).
Unfortunately, B&W G3 can't boot from an external FW drive, so I'm stuck with booting from a CD/DVD for troubleshooting.
My next step is to re-install on a single drive again and try to enable RAID and mirror, but I'd sure like to avoid that if I could.
I've searched through this board and didn't really see this particular situation. Any of you smart server folks seen this before -- any ideas or suggestions??
    TIA,
    Brad

if you backup your data from a NON-RAID Drive (Single drive), create a RAID array and then Restore from the backup you created... you will find you cannot boot from the drive.
Apparently the sector or drive header information in a non-RAID drive is different than in a RAID array... so when you restore the backup data from the non-RAID drive to the new RAID Array; you effectively corrupt the RAID array not allowing it to be booted from.
The solution is to create the RAID array and then re-install your system from scratch... copying over the data you want to keep from your initial backup one file at a time (don't do a complete system copy or you will once again, corrupt your new RAID install).
I had the same problem and it took me a great deal of time to figure it out.

  • Is it possible to boot up a 2014 macbook pro from a cd or usb?

    Hello everyone!
I am thinking about buying a Macbook Pro ( latest version ), but I work on other operating systems like Linux and Windows (I use various distributions of linux).Would it be possible to boot a mac pro from an external disk unit or a USB stick with linux on it?
    Have a nice day,
    Alexjaco

OS X can be installed on a USB flash drive, but not a DVD. There are two ways to do this. One way you simply put the OS X installer on an 8 GB flash drive. This can be used to boot the computer, run any disk utility routines, and install OS X. The second way is to install a minimal OS X onto a 16 GB flash drive. This can be used to boot the computer, erase its drive, then clone the system from the flash drive to the computer's drive
In either case it's essential that after you download the OS X installer from the App Store you must copy it from the Applications folder to you Downloads folder or some other location. The OS X installer automatically deletes itself upon completing the installation, but only if the installer is in the Applications foldeer.

  • Mirrored raid and bootcamp.

On my mac i have a mirrored raid of 2 external hdds for music and photos etc.
I intend on buying a new mac soon, now I know I can just unplug and plug them into the new one no problem.
My question is though, that with my new mac i will be using bootcamp, and I am unsure what will happen if I boot into windows with my mirrored raid setup still plugged in.

  • Possible to convert a mirrored RAID boot drive to a single disc boot drive

hi ... i made the mistake of installing my Macpro with a RAID on the first two drive bays as a startup disc. Although this doesn't pose any problems per se i would like to have a single disc startup drive now but i do not have the time or courage to re-install and re-configure everything (installation&config with all software takes 3 days due to the huge number of software i have on this machine).
is it possible (and how) to get rid of the RAID and convert one of the discs to a normal startup volume so i can reformat the second disc and use it as a work drive ? Since the 'mirrored' drives both contaion a full startup drive this should be possible i think but could not find any info on this.
thx for any help with this ...

hey .. funny how expert opinions vary ... i have a handfull of IT and software RAID experts who disagree with you ... in my case, i'd rather get rid of it ... ( however i still have to find a solution to clone my boot drive that works flawlessly with all my software ... )
anyways ... how exactly do i go about splitting the RAID, to make sure i don't mess it up ....
    1. restart from CD
    2. Delete the mirrored RAID set
    3. remove one of the HDs with the raid slice on it (i'll keep it as a backup 4 the moment just in case)
    4. restart from the remaining slice disc
    5. ... ?
do i need to do anything specific ... ? what about the name of the Volume .. for the moment my startup disk (the RAID) is called 'BootRAID' ... the slices are called 'RAID Slice (disk0s2)' and 'RAID Slice (disk1s2)' .. in order for everything to work properly, don't i have to rename the new startup disk ?
    i'm scared ...

  • Is it possible to boot from a shared dvd or disk image remotely

Is it possible to boot from a shared dvd or disk image remotely without using netboot for install or utility?

All Apple Remote Desktop can do is point a system to a startup disk; it has no facility for providing a boot image. So you may want to ask this question in the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server forums. You'll be more likely to get suggestions there, though other than NetBoot I know of no way to boot a group of computers from a single disk image or DVD.

  • Is it possible to boot or Time Machine restore from an external Thunderbolt disk drive?

(There are several questions - search for "?".)
I purchased a Seagate Backup Plus for Mac Desktop Drive 3 TByte with default USB 3.0 interface, and also acquired the Seagate Thunderbolt Adapter for Backup Plus Desktop Drives and Thunderbolt cable.
I do a redundant backup to the Seagate Drive using both Carbon Copy Cloner (nightly) and Time Machine (hourly) using its Thunderbolt adapter.  BTW:  One never knows when Time Machine will choke - see discussion titled, "UPDATED: Serious Time Machine bug on Mountain Lion", which I had; Rest In Peace Pondini (James Lewis Pond).
Booting from the external Seagate Backup Plus via Thunderbolt inteface from System Preferences -> Startup Disk:
I select the Time Machine OS X, 10.8.5 Startup Disk (Thunderbolt attached drive), click Restart, confirm my choice, the computer reboots, however, it reboots from the internal Macintosh HD OS X, 10.8.5, NOT the selected external Thunderbolt drive.  The SSD drive was used as the Startup Drive, not the selected external Time Machine volume as indicated by the display free disk space command (df(1)) and seeing that the Macintosh HD OS X, 10.8.5 volume is mounted as root.  That is very deceptive in that both the internal and external drives will appear in the same manner from a GUI point of view!  OS X doesn't even inform me that it did not boot off the selected volume.  This is the first half of the problem, that is, Is it possible to boot from an external Thunderbolt disk drive?  In my case, the answer is deceptively No.  Can anybody else boot off a Thuderbolt attached disk drive?  Note that if I remove the Thunderbolt adapter, and attach the drive via its USB 3.0 cable, the MBP boots off the external Seagate Backup Plus just fine, as is expected.
Booting from the external Seagate Backup Plus via Thunderbolt inteface from boot-time "Option - Select startup disk" method:
When I restart the MBP using the startup Option key to select the startup volume, the externally connected Seagate drive ONLY SHOWS UP if it is attached with the USB 3.0 cable, not when it is attached with via the Thunderbolt interface.  Can anyone else boot off a Thunderbolt drive with the startup Option key sequence?  At least the MBP doesn't deceive me in this case - I know right away that the external Thunderbolt drive is not an option when connected as such.
Time Machine restore from the external Seagate Backup plus via Thunderbolt interface from the "command-R - Recovery Parition" method:
After booting from the recovery partition, I attempt to perform a Time Machine restore from the Thunderbolt connected Seagate Backup drive.  When Time Machine attempts to present me with a viable backup Time Machine volume, the external Thunderbolt drive is never offered as an option.  So I switch the Time Machine volume to use its USB 3.0 interface, and then Time Machine displays that drive as an option, and the MBP proceeds with the restoration as expected.  The interesting thing to note is that while booted in the recovery partition via the Thuderbolt cable, the MBP Disk Utility may be selected, and the Thunderbolt attached drive may be operated on just fine.  Can anybody else restore their MBP using Time Machine and the Recovery Partition via the Thunderbolt interface?
This is also a big problem for me in that I am forced to restore my MBP via Carbon Copy Cloner using the USB 3.0 interface, because I cannot even boot off that volume's Thunderbolt interface.  Of course, the option may be that I could use yet another eternal USB 3.0 drive, boot from it, and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the Macintosh HD via the aforementioned drive connected by a Thunderbolt cable, but that is less than ideal and not elegant, so I'm not going there.
Another side issue is that the commercially available program, TechTool Pro 7's eDrive, which I installed on the Time Machine volume, will not boot off that eDrive as advertised, but I won't got through those steps here, because that would be beyond the scope of this issue, however, I must say, It does not work either when the Time Machine volume is connected via the Thunderbolt interface, but works just fine when connected via the USB 3.0 interface.

If this helps anybody else make a decision about whether to consider Apple because of Apple's superior customer service:
Apple sells this entire line of drives right in their store, from 1TB to 4TB.  I spent 1 and 1/2 hours, yesterday, confirming that  the 3TB model IS NOT 100% Thunderbolt compliant.  A MBP cannot boot, nor can it Time Machine restore from this drive, though EVERYTHING about the drive is normal.
Apple's South Coast Plaza store management had at least two responses to me personally about how to proceed:
    1.  Buy a different drive from another drive manufacturer, and to attempt to return the drive to COSTCO.  A lead genius suggested going with GTech drives, for instance.
    2.  Wait for Seagate to fix their problem.
I told Apple management in the store that the drive is advertised as Mac Compatible (see  picture) and that it is advertised as being a Thunderbolt drive (see picture).  I pressed management that my purchasing decsion to get the best possible MBP Retina was based on the availablity of Inexpensive Devises (raID), and that not having this complete compatibility is a show-stopper for my needs, and that I wanted a refund.  Their response?  They needed to talk with "Merchendising" to see if they are on or off the hook for these kind of 3rd party assertions, and would get back to me.
I am not holding my breath.
Note:  I do not hold this against the Geniuses that helped me, nor against the management I've dealt with, nor the upper level engineers that I've corresponded with through Apple Care - their problem solving skills were helpful - although I could have arrived at similar conclusions given enough $$$.  (For instance, try a Lacie TB drive and see if that works - we did, and it did not work.  Or, we have a different TB cable and a different TB adapter, let's try those - we did, and it did not work.)  I blame myself for not doing enough homework before going with Apple's solutions.

  • Possible to boot Win from an external drive?

I've recently replaced my original drive with both Mac OS X and a small partition for windows installed.
My windows partition is now on an external drive: the only difference is, i'ts now connected via USB instead of the internal SATA connector.
(I can still boot off of my old Mac OS X partition)
Is it possible to Boot from a bootcamp partition on an external drive?
if yes? Can I clone it to other drives?

    ok thanks man.
I'm now cloning that old partition to an external drive... guess I have to buy some old crappy pc system to acces some old programs.
I'm not doing the bootcamp partition anymore because someone advised me partitioning startup disks makes them slower. And I maybe use windows once every 6 months to find an old file.

    Hi
The BIOS supports following bootable devices:
    - USB FDD,
    - Primary HDD,
    - Optical devices,
    - Network(LAN)
So *USB ODD* is not supported by this BIOS

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

  • Possible to boot MBP 10.5.4 from iBook G3 10.4.11?

I continue to try to find solution for apparent sudden death of my MBP 2.16 core2 on 10.5.4. White light comes on, no screen. Took in Disc1 from original 10.4 install but won't boot or eject. Reset PM.
Can I use my iBook G3 640mb ram on 10.4.11 connected by ethernet cable to boot it enough to try to work with it? Or will I then have both down? There is also an ext. HD with a bootable clone (week old) of the system but it won't do anything either (but most data is saved at least!).
I live in Mexico for now 5 hours south of Cancun and 5+ hours from the nearest possible service. Advice is welcome.

No, you cannot boot an Intel Mac from a PPC version of OS X in a PPC Mac. You would need another Intel Mac and an Intel version of OS X.
If you have a tested bootable clone and cannot start the computer with it nor boot it from the original OS X Installer Disc that came with it, then it's likely you have a major hardware problem.

  • Possible to boot MacBook Pro Core i7 from an APM FireWire drive?

    Hi everyone,
is there a way to boot the current MacBook Pros from a FireWire drive which uses Apple Partition Map instead of GUID? I’m asking, because I use a FW drive with lots of partitions containing service tools, etc. This needs to be used on older PPC Macs, too. So until now I just used it with APM, because this also worked fine with Intel Core (2) Duo Macs. The problem is that it no longer seems to work with the current Macs.
Is there a way to fix this or will I need to carry 2 external drives from now on?
    Thanks
    Björn

Thanks, I assumed something like that. While trying to boot 10.6.3 from my APM drive it would halt at the grey  screen without the spinning, so I thought booting off APM drives is no longer possible. I know that it’s not officially supported for Intel Macs, but it always worked. Maybe I will just wait if 10.6.4 automagically solves this.
I was playing with the USB stick option too, but as long as I can keep everything on 1 drive I will do that. Currently there is everything from 10.3.9 to 10.6.3 on it.
    Thanks
    Björn
