Possible to use DVD-RW drive from Asus laptop as external drive for S10?

I just purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook, which of course does not have a built in DVDRW.  I have an older Asus laptop with a removeable DVD-RW drive.  Is it possible to get some sort of case to turn it into a USB external drive?

the links that BaileyMoto posted will work for most laptop dvd/cd drives.  i've got one, and it works great with an nec drive in it.  only takes one cable for power and data, so you don't use up both ports on your computer.
only the newer laptop cd/dvd drives are sata.  your old drive from your asus should work fine in that enclosure.  the first link is for the board that comes in the enclosure that's in the second link.

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Is it possible to use an mSata drive as the primary drive?

    Greeting everyone,
I recently bought an HP ENVY Phoenix 810 whiich comes with the MS-7826 (Kaili) motherboard which has an mSata slot with a 16gb msata ssd in it, but it's only being used as a cache. So my question is, is it possible to use the mSata drive as as the main bootable drive along with 3 other hard drives? I'm planning to install a 256 msata ssd along with 3 4tb hd, but want to use the msata as the main one. Is it possible, if so how?
I've come across a few forums where they were having problems with the same thing where they were able to use it as the main drive but as soon as they installed the original bootable drive they system will not boot since the drive didn't have an operating system installed in it and it wont boot from the mSata even though the os was installed onto the mSata. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    JCCR510, welcome to the forum.
The mSATA drive in the computer can only be used as cache and not as a boot drive.  This is the way that HP has it setup.
You certainly can buy a SATA SSD and install it.  As you can see in my signature below, I have Samsung EVO 840 SSD in my 810-135qe.  It works great.

  • When using a personal dropbox account, is it possible to use the mapped drive without downloading all my dropbox files to my hard drive as well?

When using a personal (not business) dropbox account on my mac book pro, is it possible to use the mapped drive only?  Currently I have dropbox mapped to my computer but it is also saving a redundant copy of the data on my hard drive.  My goal is to pull, edit and save files on the mapped drive only without having a redundant back up of all my dropbox files on my computer wasting valuable storage space.   Any advice out there?  Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't believe that is accurate, but maybe I am missing something (I am not a Windows user).
Looking at 2 explanation of how to map a Dropbox as a drive…
    http://lkeng.org/wp/?p=147
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d8uvseVr5A
Both of those are linking to the 'local copy' of Dropbox. It is not a true 'network' drive as far as I can see (it still requires the local copy on the PC).
Another video suggests using another service to mount the Dropbox, but that is not using Dropbox anymore, it is going through Otixo…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAIpm2qmglU
Dropbox does not provide easy to use URL's to mount as a network disk so I don't think this is possible on OS X.
    Dropbox's forum has this too…
    https://www.dropboxforum.com/hc/communities/public/questions/202133795-How-to-ma p-dropbox-as-a-network-drive-on-Mac?loca…
You may need to examine the Windows computers carefully - if they have Dropbox installed & running then all the files are stored on the local machine in addition to the 'mapped drive'.
It looks to me like people are 'redirecting' the local copy to appear like a remote disk just so they can address that path on other machines - each PC is being setup the same. You could create aliases on OS X, but it doesn't help move files off the machine.
Hopefully someone else will contradict me, but I don't think this is how Dropbox works.

  • What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

A lot of people have a Mac where the superdrive has been taken out to be replaced with a harddisk. Try to find a friend who has done that, give him a beer and take the superdrive, then buy a superdrive container from OWC or another for  afew dollars and put it in there. This slimdrive container has a USB connector. There you go.

  • Using Multiple Hard Drives for iTunes Storage

I am running out of room on my current hard drive and want to use a new external hard drive to add space. My problem is I want to use both hard drives for storage (not the same music). Is this possible as I have only been able to direct iTunes to one hard drive? Thank you.
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   400GB Raid set

When you change the location in iTunes preferences what you are doing is telling iTunes where ripped music should be put. It isn't changing where iTunes should look for music that is already in the library. So go ahead and change the location to where you want music to be stored from now on. iTunes won't lose the other music. (At one times my iTunes library was spread over 4 drives.)

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • Is it possible to use Boot Camp to install Windows on an external HD?

So I don't use up space on my internal hard drive, would it be possible to use Boot Camp to install Windows to an external hard drive?

Ok, so officially, you have to install it on your Mac's internal drive. Good, thanks for clearing that up.
I guess the only simple alternative to installing Windows on your Mac's internal drive is to buy another Mac, and install it on there instead I mean, you could have a Mac Mini or a MacBook, and have that running Windows under Boot Camp.

  • Trouble using the instrument driver for the "hp8753b"

I am using the instrument driver for the "hp8753b", specifically the "collect and display data" driver.  I manually set my settings to the analyzer and run the VI (i.e. set start frequency to 500 kHZ and stop frequency to 1 GHz), when the VI runs with the "collect and display data" it defaults to start frequency 1 GHz and stop frequency to 3 GHz.  I have tried to modify the driver to only collect data and not to modify any settings on the analyzer but I run into errors.  Any help on this is appreciated.

    Hello,
I have installed the instrument driver you mention in your post. I am looking at the Collect and Display Data.vi, however I need more information from you to determine why your sweep is defaulting back to 1GHz-3GHz.
When you say "I manually set my settings to the analyzer" are you making these settings directly on the analyzer? The Collect and Display Data.vi seems to read all of the settings from the hardware, I did not see any configuration in the VI.  What modifications were you making to the VI and what errors were you getting?
Can you see the range on the instrument?  If so , can you determine at which point the range defaults back to the higher range?  Running in highlight-execution mode in the VI and running NI-Spy (Start->All Programs->National Instruments->NI-Spy) to perform a capture of the GPIB commands can help to determine at what point the errors are occurring.  It will also let you see if there are any commands being sent which cause the instrument to be reset.

  • My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

  • Can I Still Use My Hard Drive For Other Things After I Do A Time Machine Backup?

I'm currently in the process of backing up my imac with time machine using a Western Digital My Passport 1TB hardrive. My total back up is just about 600GB. I've read that I will still be able to use my hard drive for backing up or transfering other files but I should partition my hard dirve. Now that time machine back up has started, will I still be able to partition my drive or is that something you must do before using time machine?
    -Gabrielle

macjack has a very valid point, so you might want to consider a second drive for files.
To partition, you need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on restart. Select Disk Utility.
Step 1 - select the hard drive.
Step 2 - select the Partition tab.
Step 3 - select the current partition and then use the lower right corner to push up and resize the partition.
Step 4 - click the plus sign to add a partition. Then select the new partition.
Step 5 - Name the new partition and select the format. The one shown in the screen shot is generally recomended.
    Step 6 - Hit apply.
This procedure can be reversed at a later date if you find your Time Machine backup needs more space.

Import them into an iTunes library, converting them to MPEG-4 if needed, and then sync the iPhone with that library.

Can I use my 27"iMac late 2009 as an external display for a non apple product such as a cable box?

To get TV on your iMac off the cable box you would need to use an external TV tuner device such as the company ElGato is highly regarded for.  I have used one of their EyeTV products for many years with my iMac to watch television shows from my Comcasst cable TV box.  You can look at the models here:
