Possible to use external display with MBP on battery & in clamshell mode

i can use the extetrnal display with my recently purchased MB Pro - lid is closed and external display works.
but the moment i try to do this with the power not connected to the MB Pro - MB Pro goes to sleep. i can wake it up with the external keyboard but it goes back to sleep in a minute or two. and this problem goes away if power is connected.
anybody else face this? has a solution?

where do i find that option - this is what i have on my machine.

  • Is it possible to use 2 displays with the mac mini

is it possible to use 2 displays with the mac mini

I wanted an extended desktop using 2 monitors.
    I am using a Dell Ultrasharp ( has 1 VGA and 1 DVI-D) and a LG W2286 (has 2 HDMI, 1 DVI-D and 1 VGA)
I ran into a similar issue where initially the mac would not detect the 2 displays and I thought I would share my solution.  I have a Mac Mini 10.8.2 i7 Late 2012.
I bought a "Cable Matters" brand Mini Display Port | Thunderbolt to DVI Male Cable to have dual monitors.
I am also using the included in the box  HDMI to DVI-D Adapter from Apple.
    Initial configuration was:
Mini-Display (Thunderbolt connector) to DVI connected to the LG DVI-D input.
Apple HDMI to DVI Dongle connected to the Dell DVI-D input.
What happened was that my desktop was on the LG clear as day but OSX did not see the dell monitor.
I called apple support and they could not figure out why the mini cant see the dell monitor. I think I discovered that the mac mini could not support 2 dvi monitors.
    I switched the monitor connections.
    The connections that works:
HDMI out to HDMI in on the LG using a standard HDMI cable.
Display port | Thunderport to DVI-D on the Dell's DVI-D in.

  • Using iMac as external display with MBP, can this be done?

    I know...
This has been posted before, but I have as of yet not found a straight answer. Mostly peoples recommendation is: "Buy a display".
However, I have an older iMac, 20" and I have a newer MBP 15". The MBP has a faster graphics card, better processor and more RAM. But I still like sitting at the table using my iMac, because the comfort of working is better this way.
Now seeing that I have both, is it possible to connect the two, and use the iMac for a display? Preferably without having to buy a whole lot of expensive cables, applications or do strange hacks risking hurting myself or my computers
    Thanks all
    Have a nice day

but I have as of yet not found a straight answer.
I think you are getting the straight answer. You need "buy a display" because a display has a video input port. An iMac has a video output port, but NO video input port. Therefore, you cannot use it as an external display, like a regular display.
You could give the iMac a video input using a USB interface device, but the cost of such a device that would provide good quality video into the iMac would cost about the same as (or more than) a low cost LCD display. And it would probably not be ideal in terms of performance.
You could also use this clever program to use a fast network connection and VNC to display the MacBook Pro's second screen on the iMac screen.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
In your case, the program will create a virtual screen for the MacBook Pro and shares it with the iMac in much the same way as the +screen sharing+ feature. Disadvantages are relatively slow image refresh rate (because the signal is going over the network) and the need to have the iMac turned on and running separately. The speed part will not be that bad in your case, if you use a Cat-5e or better Ethernet cable to connect the two Macs, so that you will have gigabit speed. You can give it a try at no cost to see if it is an acceptable solution (in time-limited demo mode).
I use this program to give my iMac a third display. The +third display+ is an old PC laptop running Linux (Ubuntu).

  • System hangs after using external display with lid closed

I often use my MBP with the lid closed with an external display and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. When done in this mode, I put the system to sleep using the apple menu, then disconnect the monitor. I found some info on the apple site explaining that this was the recommended procedure for exiting the lid-closed mode.
However, sometimes the system doesn't go to sleep. Opening the lid, the LED goes out, but the display remains off. If I then try reconnecting the external monitor, nothing happens. It appears that it has gone into some mode where it is active, but no displays are enabled. My only resource at this point is to power the system off and back on, at which point everything is ok.
I'm wondering if turning off my bluetooth devices after selecting the sleep menu item is causing the system to reawaken at a bad time, causing this state to occur.
I have also run into problems when connecting an external projection monitor. On several occassions I have connected the external display adapter before turning on the projector, or before connecting it to the adapter, and the system locked-up hard (no mouse movement, etc). My only recourse was hard power off.
Any ideas? Is this a broken system or are these known OSX or MBP issues?

  • Possible to use external HD with 2 machines?

Aloha all, I have been using an external HD with my MacBook to store librarys for iPhoto, & Aperture. It has worked great, but today I hit a snag. I cannot get the drive to show up when I plug it into my G5. I would like to be able to use it with both.

Do you have a LAN that you can connect the two Macs to? If so then log into the MacBook from the G5 and select the external HD. That will let you access any of the libraries on the external HD. Just be sure to set the ownership of the external HD to be ignored as seen here.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Using external display with laptop

I've got an older 15" studio display that I'd like to use as a monitor for my powerbook G4. The display seems to have 35 pins on it's cord? Will this work? What adapter do I need?

The DVI to VGA adapter that came with it is what you may need. Or DVI to ADC which you can buy from Dr. Bott. Dr. Bott makes both types.

  • Using external keyboard with MBP...

    just wondering...
where is the fn (function) key on a aluminum mac keyboard?

On the Apple Wireless Keyboard it's in the same place as on the MBP keyboard - bottom left. On the Apple Keyboard (USB) it's just below the F13 key (above the 'inverted-T' arrow keys).

  • Can't sign in on external monitor with MBP after Yosemite upgrade

After Yosemite upgrade, when I turn on my MBP, I can't sign in using external monitor with MBP, always could before Yosemite.  Blurred image of my wallpaper shows on monitor, can move arrow on external screen but sign-in only shows up on my computer screen, with no arrow.  Since there is no arrow on the computer screen, and no sign in box on the external monitor, I have to unplug the external video to sign in on the computer, then plug in the monitor again.  Any ideas?

    NOWEK,
Thanks for this suggestion, but so far no joy. I have zapped the PRAM, jammed the Frabitz and smashed the Gafrogsnicker, all to no avail. When the MBP restarts I get a blurred image (extreme "vibrancy") on the external monitor, but no images of the login accounts to choose from or the other options. However, on the MBP screen I get all that. The keyboard and mouse respond, but just doesn't display on the external monitor. This is of interest to me because I have the MBP down in a credenza with other related gear and the external monitor and keyboard up on my desk. It's true I don't have to do this often, but still, it just started this aggravation with Yosemite. Thanks for trying to help.

  • Possible to do dual display with a mini?

I have an early 2008 Mac mini (Intel) - with the standard DVI connector; using the supplied DVI/VGA adapter to connect to an LCD monitor.
I'm just wondering if it is possible to use two displays with this model and if so, how do I connect the second monitor?

Several ways of doing it in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8335705&#8335705
If you want to go the usb route, see also:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VIDU2DVIA/
Be sure to examine the limitations of each method.
(I'd also consider that your 2008 Mini likely has substantial resale value and that you might prefer getting a 2009 Mini which natively supports dual displays.)

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • I have a 17" Macbook pro with flickering red and cyan(blue) lines across the screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem.

I purchased my Macbook (17") through a certified apple tecnition in August 2012, it was refurbished and the motherboard was completely replaced. I do a lot of photo editing, but I have been unable to do so because of the red vibrating lines that interrupt my screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem. I brought the computer back to the technition I purchased it from and he said that it was a problem with my fan, so I have two new fans but the issue is still occuring. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. Does anyone have any information on this issue?
Here is an image of the issue

I recommend having your Mac serviced by someone competent. A force sufficient to "blow apart" the fans was clearly excessive and may have damaged the display cable, as well as any number of other problems.
Dust is properly cleaned with a vacuum, preferably one designed for computer service, and they are not cheap.
Compressed air should never be used. It just blows dust everywhere, often into places where it can no longer be removed.

  • Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.
