PostScript to PDF Problem :(

Ok, this is driving me nuts. First of all, I'm using InDesign CS4 on
Mac OSX Snow Leopard: before this upgrade, I was able to create a PDF
using the indesign function Print Booklet. Now I can't and I don't
know why. Using Google I found people having similar problem and I
tried some alternative steps like exporting a .ps from my indd file,
then using distiller to generate a PDF - ok, good, seems a solution -
but the problem was when I open my PDF, there are not spreads, just
pages! I tried to check Spreads under indesign print options but I
can't do that! And I couldn't find a solution over Distiller either...
Please, I need some help to solve this!
Thanks a lot guys!
Juan

Thank you Peter. This is cos snow leopard update?
Let see if Adobe can fix this asap!

Much discuseed, here and elsewhere. See for example http://indesignsecrets.com/acrobats-adobe-pdf-printer-replaced-in-snow-leopard.php

You may need to use a script to impose instead of Print Booklet, then export the PDF. You can look at http://pdsassoc.com/downloads/Buildbooklet.zip and http://products.carlsenenterprises.com/

  • PDF Problems @ Printers - Export Methods?

I am working on a brochure that is mostly white text on black, with a few full colour pictures. There are also some manufacturer's logos that I inverted to make them white on black too, all in CMYK mode in PS. Though there were still black boxes around the logo's they were going on the black background so I thought I would be safe... I tried the "instant alpha" tool in Pages but the pictures are too low-res for this method to work effectively (it rounded all the points and made the images).
For the first proof I used the file>export>PDF>best method, and all looked good on my computer but the colours that were produced from the print shop (The UPS Store) looked appalling. Contrast was great on all the white on black text, but the colours were completely off. (however, there were no black boxes around the logos I was worried about, so that was a plus)
I did a fairly thorough web search of other print methods, and came across the file>print>pdf>save as postscript method that involved using Adobe Distiller to create the PDF rather than Pages. After getting a proof back from the print shop today I was pleased to see that the colours now appeared accurate on the proof but the black on black box problem around the logos I used now appeared and looked awful.
How do I fix? I'm frustrated and this matter is very time sensitive as there is supposed to be over 10,000 copies of this brochure printed by the weekend. Thanks in advance. : )

a brochure that is mostly white text on black, with a few full colour pictures. There are also some manufacturer's logos that I inverted to make them white on black too, all in CMYK mode in PS ... the colours were completely off.
The objects in the page are not colour managed coherently and correctly from the start. For instance, if you have Photoshop set up to disregard embedded ICC profiles, it will assign a default ICC profile for the colourant model of the object (a type PRTR Printer profile with data space CMYK for a CMYK colourant model object, and so forth), but it will not save out that object with the profile it assigned. This way you get what in the graphics model becomes 'deviceColor' meaning that the colourants are rendered by the numbers as there is no definition of the colours you intend them to form in the printing condition.
Classical case is of a graphic designer who misconfigures or disables colour management in a page layout application, places deviceColor objects, generates PostScript or PDF, and wonders why the gray balance, the tonal range, the highlight detail, the shadow detail - is different in each and every tonal image in the page. Always, always, always unify the colour management for the page. Capture and correct in a large gamut RGB working space. Place three component RGB with correctly embedded source ICC RGB profile in pagination, and convert into one and only one destination ICC CMYK profile for the intended printing condition.
The way you are working would produce similar problems in QuarkXPress and InDesign - it would not matter what make and model of page layout application you picked.
    Hope this helps,

  • PostScript to PDF Create Acrobat Layer

    Hi All,
I have problem with Post Script to PDF [Using Distiller].
When I Using option Export PDF There is an option "Create Acrobat Layer" It will get Layered PDF.   This works fine.
But when I using option PostScript to PDF There is no option "Create Acrobat layer".
Kindly suggest us How to get Layered PDF Using PostScript Options.
    Regards
    Hurix

To directly answer your initial question …
PostScript does not have the concept of layers. As such, producing PDF via distillation of PostScript cannot provide a PDF file with layers.
Per the rest of the thread, there really is no good reason to ever produce PDF from InDesign other than via export and this is especially true for a PDF file destined for print. Pitstop Server can indeed process PDF files. I assume you are using PitStop for preflight purposes? In the general case, exporting PDF from InDesign using the PDF/X-4 settings will yield perfectly-printable PDF files. The Preflight function might assist in finding design problems; the PDF file structure itself should be perfectly fine.

  • PDF problem part 2...

I guess a lot of people are having pdf problems.
When I export a pdf of a Travel Journal doc and view with adobe reader 7.0, the borders on the photos are not there.
What is the word on this?
As you can see I don't have Tiger /PDF-X.
    Thanks

Not certain if this is quite the same thing, but.......
I have found problems when exporting to pdf, not when I open in Preview but when the person I am emailing the file to opens it in Acrobat, as all drop shadows are then lost, this makes professional printing difficult.
Resolved it for the moment by:
    1. exporting to pdf as normal
    2. using Graphic Converter which comes bundled with OSX to create a PSD file and sending that electronically. Slight problem was that the size of the file increased from 3mb to about 27mb, so had to download a free copy of Cyberduck ftp programme too. In fact saving it to jpeg was just about as good.
    3. you do have to do one page at a time but it works.

  • Illustrator Save to PDF problems

I have Illustrator CS 14.0.0 and Acrobat Pro 9 (9.1.1 to be specific) extended and I cannot save the pdf format from Illustrator. I try over and over and it just does not work... it just locks up Illustrator forcing me to use the Windows XP task manager to kill Illustrator becuase it is simply frozen and I have no other options. The failure is happening with large and small files of any complexity. I would like to make use of the streamlined workflows in CS4... but his problem is big headache - especially if I would like to include special aspects of Illustrator features in the PDF file. The failure happen with save-as and with the basic save PDF. I was able to open (more or less like an import) the .ai file after saving from within Acrobat and that seems to be a work around for now. Is ther any updates for Acrobat or Illustrator to fix this save as PDF problem inside Illustrator CS4??

I am experiencing exactly the same problem as reported in this thread.  I am using AI CS4.  When I try to save to PDF the programme freezes making it necessary to use the task manager to kill it.  I have been trying to identify the folders where the preferences are held but on this computer running windows xp the folder names do not match those in the thread.  Is there a specific file name that I can search for?

  • PRO-E to Postscript to PDF garbles some data in Distiller 8.1.2

We are creating Postscript files from Pro-E then using Distiller to create PDF files for distribution. This worked beautifully in Version 3.0 up to 6.0 distiller releases. We recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro 8 and are using the Distiller to create the PDF from the PS file. Same PS file is garbled in 8.1.2 What am I doing wrong in Distiller 8.1.2? What job settings should we use, or modify to get the PDF to mirror the Postscript file? We check the PS file with Ghostscript viewer and it's fine. It's odd that it works in the older version, but we would expect it to be worth the upgrade so to speak. We do know that Pro-E does output to PDF in it's latest version but we are not there yet.$$ Any suggestions?

I tend to think that if a new user account works as expected then there is a permissions issue, though I guess it could be a permissions issue with a font. If you boot with the Startup CD you can probably fix the permissions in the original account. Although, I've seen a new user work and repairing all permissions fail before.
You can attempt to remove the fonts you believe may be damaged. if you don't know which fonts this might be, try removing all but the basic system fonts, then adding them back in chunks. There may be an easier way to do this nowadays. I haven't had to deal with this problem in many years.
I work with multiple partitions, keeping a partition named "Base" that has a minimal OS on it specifically for problems like this. I log into this and run Disk Utility whenever things start to go haywire. I keep my installed fonts to a minimum.

  • PDF problem: copy and paste results in squares

    hello all,
I have problem with my PDF's. I'm afraid the problem maybe is not related to the distiller, but I hope someone here can guide me in the right direction. I don't know exactly what the right starting point is for this case.
The problem is that whenever I copy text from a document (reader 7.0 or Adobe Acrobat 9 pro on windows XP) that is created with the distiller server and I paste the clipboard in a word document, the result is a string of squares, one per character. It seems the font size is preserved, as the squares appear in different size.
Can any of you guide me with this? The problem seems to be the postscript that I use as a starting point. When I distill it (distiller version seems to be not important, I use distiller server 4.05 for windows) the problem arises.
What can be the cause of that? Can I change the distiller options to fix this or do I have to change the postscript? Do I have to upgrade the distiller? Has it something to do with the fonts?
I have an example of a postscript that gives this problem here: http://pastebin.com/EbVGBhAL
thanks in advance for helping me, Ruud

    OK, Bernd, now I see.
So the encoding vector maps the character codes to character names; the charstrings map maps the character names to the characters.
And the character _names_  are used during the copy to clipboard. That is you meant by 'the encoding is incorrect'. The character names in my postscript are like 'c01', 'c02' and so on; the copy to clipboard can't use them. Interesting.
Bernd, can you tell me how you know that character \016 maps to a 6 in the font table? On the moment, that is my 'missing link'. If I only know how you did it, I could make the mapping myself. I would be very happy....
    thanks a lot, Ruud

  • Save as Aobe PDF problem

    Hi All.
Just installed CS5 yesterday. Running Mac OS 10.6.4.
Tried to save a document as a pdf via print > save as adobe pdf.
Error message: Save as Adobe PDF not supported.
Not that it worked in CS4 either.
Export as pdf gives me transparency problems like white lines, bounding boxes, etc.
I guess Adobe is taking us back in time to PostScript files and Distiller.
Maybe after next version we'll have to go back to X-acto knives, wax, and paste-up. . . .
    Can anyone offfer any help?
    Thanx.

Okay. I ganged several positions on a sheet. All pdf's. The problem was there on one of the positions (2-3 year old file from archives), on screen in Acrobat pro. Usually, I can get it to go away by disabling "smooth line art" and "smooth images" in the prefs.
    This time I could not.
When I did a distill, it did go away, for some reason, and not with export, any compatibility.
However, after reading your post, I retraced my steps. I regenerated a pdf of that position, and that solved the problem, even with export, even with acrobat 4 compatibility. So it seems there was something inherently wrong with that file, even though distiller got rid of it somehow.
    Thanx for all your help.
Wish Apple and Adobe would stop bickering and fix this darn mess.

  • Ps to PDF problem

    Hello there,
    I've a little annoying problem with distiller. I'm using a linux program which is creating ps files than transferring into windows and converting to .pdf with distiller. But PS files have this string;
    stroke showpage savepage
    this causes a program termination and distiller stops working. Than I'm changing string with this;
    stroke showpage savepage restore
it's working and converting to pdf.
Now it's not possible to modify linux program to create the second command line. Is there any way to get pdf files with first situation?

This seems more a question about bad PostScript: the PostScript
programming forum may be more suitable. It's not possible to say
whether it should work, because savepage is not a part of the
PostScript language. It is a procedure somewhere else in the file.

  • Error when converting PostScript to PDF

    Hi All,
I'm running an windows application that converts postscript file to pdf automatically. If I ran my application as an administrator it is wokring great. As a standard user I'm getting the following error
"Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {FC403250-51F5-4E1B-AC8C-ED9C5E551B9B} failed due to the following error: 80080005"
My application is built using Adobe Professional 6.0 and VB.NET .
For me it seems to be a permission problem. could any one help me out in solving this issue??????
At line2 I'm getting the error
    Line1: Dim oDist As ACRODISTXLib.PdfDistiller6
    Line2: oDist = New ACRODISTXLib.PdfDistiller6
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards
    VJ.

In that case, I recommend you post in the Acrobat SDK forum, since you
are not using the Distiller Server product this forum is devoted to. I
hope you will be able to find fellow users with the same problem
there. (You could try raising an ASN case, but Adobe probably can't
help with such an old version).

  • Creating Pdf problems

    Hi
I have a problem with creating pdf from freehand file that include jpg image imported from photoshop. While creating pdf the imported image (which is in colores) inverted to greys and the image getting some ugly strips (not smooth).
I tried to import other image formats but with no lack. it's work the same with creating a ps file and theb a pdf through the distiller.
i will appriciate any help or tips with this
    thanks
    Yana

I don't know why a color jpg file would export to PDF as grayscale. Open it in Photoshop and check to make sure it's a normal JPEG file without compression or clipping paths.
In FreeHand's PDF export settings, image compression will reduce the quality of the image. That may be the cause of the banding.
You should be aware of the many limitations to FreeHand's PDF export feature. See this technote.
    http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_13496_en-us
Printing to a Postscript file and using Distiller to create the PDF is a much better way to work. In that case, make sure that you have selected "Adobe PDF" or a color Postscript printer in the Print dialog. If you select a monochrome printer, then the PS file will be formatted for that printer and color images will be converted to grayscale.

  • Export pdf problem

I have a document which I can't export as a pdf properly. I export it but the pdf it creates is nothing like it's meant to be. It has some graphics missing and several other items are just not there and there is a large area with a green to yellow gradient which just appears as solid yellow. A few of the items are there on the page where they're meant to be but that's all.
If I PRINT to .pdf instead of exporting, it is much better. Everything is at least there and the gradient is fine, but there are scratchy looking lines on the surface of the pdf around some of the graphics. Even thougn in both the export and print I am choosing the highest quality pdf option.
I thought exporting was supposed to be the right way to do it. Why is it behaving like this?
Should I just perhaps always print and forget about exporting?

Your white lines are stitching from flattening the transparency, which always happens when you print to PDF instead of exporting, regardless of the compatibility selected. Distilled PDFs pass through a postscript file which doesn't support transparency.
Some of the problem in your exported PDF may be due to overprint settings. Be sure to enable the overprint preview in acrobat, and if flattening is occurring, you must also enable "simulate overprint" in the export or print dialog settings.
Missing images is sometimes caused by OPI comments. Do you have OPI active, or did anything here come from Quark, where it is on by default?

  • Exporting to PDF problem - font turning to rectangles

    Hi
when exporting from Indesign CS4 to PDF I am recieving feedback from a number of clients that they are seeing text as rectangles.
This appears to be happening with one particular font (Meta Pro). PDFing to earlier versions of Acrobat doesn't seem to make any difference either.
I can resolve this by turning text to outlines but don't want to have to do this all the time and never had this problem with CS2
I am running CS 4 on Windows XP Professional, version 2002, Service pack 3.
    Any help gratefully received!

Very strange - most likely they don't have Meta Pro and the font wasn't embedded. Are you exporting or printing to postscript then distilling?
If you're distilling then make sure that Distiller knows to Always Embed that font.
Either way check the PDF and go to File>Document Properties and check the Fonts and make sure it says Embedded Subset (or at least embedded) beside the font.
