Power Mac G4 RAID Question

After successfully putting OS X Leopard on my Power Mac G4, I then gasped at the amount of space I had; from the built in 10 GB hard drive, I had a couple hundred MegaBytes left. However, I recently pulled a 40 GB Hard Drive from another computer, and installed it. The Mac had no problem identifying and formatting it.
However, having very little space and more things to install, my question is this; How do I set up this Mac to identify the 2 internal drives as one single drive? I have done a little research, and discovered Disk Utility's ability to configure a sort of "Software RAID," but cannot find a good guide as to define how to actually do so. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Jordan. Meow!

OK, you're not going to get much speed out of OSX with only 50 GB to start with, since Leopard does best with 100 GB or 30% Free space, but anyway, boot from the Install Disc...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
Select one of the drives, click on the RAID tab, Raid type select Concatenated RAID set, drag to two drives on the left to the window on the right, iirc.

I have a Power Mac (couple of years old) and recently upgraded to OS 10.6.8 so that I could run Photoshop CS6.  I use an Epson 3800 printer with latest printer driver available from Epson web site.
Now I can't seem to print.  I get the following error message:

  • Power Mac G5 upgrade question.

Does anybody know if the G5 can be transformed into an Intel system in order to upgrade to Lion?
I really don't want to have to buy a new Mac.

I did contact Apple and they said pretty much what you discussed in your reply.  They also suggested I
upgrade to Leopard which would allow me to upgrade other software I currently have on the computer.
    Thanks again.

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
If they were SATA and running on PCI SATA controller, very popular and common really in G4s, more options would be open.

  • Power Mac G4 questions.

So like so many other users, my Power Mac G4 tower will not power on.
All that happens when I press the power button is the indicator light will flash in the blink of an eye.
When I hold the power butoon, same thing, but there is a faint clicking sound comeing from inside the case.
I'm pretty sure it might be the power supply that is out, so how would I know what specific item I will need to buy to replace the bad one?
Also, would it be recommended to get a new battery for it too since it is well over 5 years old?
If none of you can answer my questions, will Geek Squad (no Apple store for quite a ways) be able o point me in the right direction?
How much will they charge me just to look at it, without any repairs?

  • Power Mac G4 933, a few questions

hello everyone, i'm new around here, and this is my first post!
i just bought a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 993 Mhz with 1.5GBs of RAM, 80GB HDD and ATI Radeon 7500 32MB AGP graphics adapter. Since it is my first Mac computer i have a lot of questions to ask.
My intention is to completely switch from Windows based computers to Mac and this is a good start i believe - not to mention that i bought this little guy for 75 euros (about 100 US dollars) - which is great! right?
Since i haven't received it yet, i'm eager to know if the graphics card is gonna support my 1080p LG wide screen monitor? just to point out, i do not expect it to be able to play any kind of HD video material, i just want it to support the native resolution of my display.
Secondly, i'm kind of getting into music recording/production business and i wanna know if i'll be able to use it along with M-Audio Fast Track external sound card and M-Audio Studiphile AV40 speakers? how are guitar rig, garage band, logic and pro tools... running on these kind of computers?
the guy i bought it from said that it has Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) installed, so i'm sort of confused - is it possible for a 2002 machine to run a 2009 operating system? i know it's supported, but again... it sounds too good to be true!
enough questions for now. i would appreciate any kind of comment or a friendly tip for for your new Mac fellow!
and yeah, i hope my English was clear enough, concerning the fact that i'm not a native speaker!
    thanks again,
    spitfire

From my experience with the 7500 in Leopard, the ability to run applications and support Leopards graphical needs is very limited.
The primary strike against the 7500 is the lack of OpenGL 2.0 support, which is needed for Leopard and many Leopard compatible apps.
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Page%201%3A%20OpenGL%20.html
If you look in some of the other benchmark pages associated with the one linked above, you'll see in some of my results the lack of the Radeon 7500 figures.
This is because the 7500 wouldn't run the monitor or support the application.
With the QS and Leopard, and even with Tiger, one will have a much nicer experience if one upgrades the graphics card to at least a Radeon 9800 Pro.
Leopard will look and perform better, as will all graphic and video intensive apps.
Monitor support is also much improved.
Any of the cards from the Radeon 9800 Pro and stronger can be considered:

  • Two questions about a G5 Power Mac

    Hi
I just got a refurbished Power Mac G5 running OSX 10.4.11
Anybody know what's the most up to date version of MS Office I can run on it?
Also I tried to install OSX 10.5.4 (which I have on my Mac Book) but it said it wasn't allowed. Is 10.4.11 the newest version I can run on this G5?
    Thanks!

Also I tried to install OSX 10.5.4 (which I have on my Mac Book) but it said it wasn't allowed.
Gray discs that come with a computer will only work on that model computer.
Leopard discs are hard to find. On another forum somebody reported that calling Apple Sales will work, though I'm not sure. Apple usually only formally sells their current OS version (in this case Snow Leopard). Sometimes calling Apple Support instead of sales and pleading your case that you cannot run Leopard on that computer will not work (or they may tell you to buy a newer computer).
Other sources are places such as Craigslist or e-bay, but again make sure you get black retail version discs. Many people don't know there is a difference. Also expect to pay near-new prices.

  • Question on Intel and power Mac compatibility

I have a FW 800 running 10.5 and am thinking to buy a new Macbook. I have server Leopard OS, not installed, Could I use the FW800 as a server and the new Macbook as the master. In other words will a power Mac work as a server to an Intel mac?
    Bob

Sure, is all I needed to hear. As long is there is no basic incompatibility. I don't know what a server can actually do. Storage of files, sure. I thought of reformatting some movie files in the background and maybe to take care of down load actives. I find my system getting bogged down with stuff I might be able to pawn off on the server.
    Thanks Bob

  • Power Mac G4 400 AGP boot from CD/firmware question

    Hello-
What is the firmware that I need for 9.0.4? I have 9.0.4 installed, but I want to erase and do a clean install and then move on to 9.1 and on. My system profiler says that my BootRom is 3.2.6f1.
I'm trying to boot from a CD (via inernal CD drive) and I'm not having any luck and I'm wondering if it's a firmware problem. My machine displays the start up disk on the desktop and will open its contents, so it seems that the cd drive is ok. When I hit the apple dropdown menu and restart, I press the "C" and all I get is grey. I get the start up chime, but then grey. I also tried the Start up disk function and was able to choose the OS disk for start up, but to no avail.
My start up disks did not come with the machine, but they are Apple G4 9.0.4 and the person I bought them from said they were intended for a G4 400 AGP computer, which I have. I might add that I have the 9.0.4power pc enabler installed as this was a school machine networked for school use. i don't know if this would make any difference. The problem may be the disks, but obviously, I'm hoping not.
Any help would be big help, thanks in advance.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Hard Disk Failure in G5 Power Mac, need to replace it, i have some question

In my G5 Power Mac, the hard disk has totally gone and i need to replace it.. can someone point me to a guide on how to do this? Im usually a PC kinda guy so this is a bit new to me.
    1) Will any SATA HDD work? does it have to be a certain brand?
    2) When the new drive is in, will it auto detect and automatically run the leopard installer of the disk?
    3) Is there anything i should be careful of or is it pretty straight forward?
any links or suggestions would be grand!
    thanks in advance!

You would need to hold option key or 'c' to boot from Leopard.
A really badly damaged drive can prevent booting from any disk, whether CD/DVD or hard drive, because the system still tries to see if there are other systems out there when it scans the various buses for bootable devices.
You probably need to unplug or pull the old drive to do anything. But you may be able to zero the drive. Partitioning checks the blocks where the partition tables will go, because those blocks can't be remapped later, and some drives fail at that point, but re-partitioning, not just erasing the user partition, is something I do frequently.
Is the 2nd drive bay filled? definitely want to use both drive bays.
Got a FW or other emergency boot drive handy? or small partition on a media drive that has just minimal OS X.
When swapping drives on G5s, NVRAM doesn't always 'learn' or see the new drive properly, so best to zap PRAM/NVRAM or reset nvram to clear the device tree and force it to rescan and recognize new devices (PCI, memory, and hard drives).
I would definitely want a working clone/backup and keep Alsoft Disk Warrior on it to repair and do maintenance of your drives on a regular basis to prevent problems from getting worse.
If you need to recover data, pull the drive and later see if Data Rescue II can see any files. You may need to repair the drive. And Apple First Aid comes up short on disk repairs and doesn't do as many tests and repairs as Disk Warrior.
I always keep a backup spare on hand that I can use if a drive goes out.

  • A Question regarding hard drive when selling Power Mac G5 tower

    Hello,
I have a 2004 Power Mac G5 tower that I'm trying to sell and will be taking out the hard drive before I ship as I don't want to reformat the drive(I'd rather keep the physical drive with me). Are there any other precautionary steps that I need to take in order to prevent the buyer from retaining any of my data on the computer? Do components like the motherboard, video card, ram or the processor retain any of my data?
Or will taking out the hard drive the only thing I need to do?
I've never sold a used computer to anyone before so I guess I'm a little OCD about it.
    Thanks in advance,
    J

Thank you for the info, Matt.
Actually the very last time I used the computer was the time it died on me so it wasn't powered off properly and I have not been able to use it since. Does the data in RAM clear itself regardless of how it was turned off? From what you have told me I'm guessing that whenever there is no power in the system the RAM is cleared regardless, am I correct?
    Thanks again,
    J

  • Sleep or Shut Down with Mac Pro RAID Card?

I'll be gone for a four-day weekend trip, which is longer than the 72 hours claimed for the Mac Pro RAID Card battery. If I shut down and come back four days later, the battery will presumably be discharged. What will happen when I restart?
Asked another way ... is 72 hours the maximum amount of time that the computer should be shut down or do I simply restart and wait for the battery to recharge and the write caches to be re-enabled?
The FAQ for the Mac Pro RAID Card http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1346 talks around this issue, but doesn't say whether it is a good or bad idea to allow the battery to discharge for "... any length of time." Please review the appended excerpt from the FAQ and advise on whether I should sleep or shut down.
    Regards,
    iPhoton
Question: Why does RAID Utility show a yellow light and report the status "Write cache disabled"?
Answer: The write cache is disabled automatically so data cannot be written to RAID volumes when the battery charge is not sufficient to back up cached data for 72 hours. This message is normally encountered when a RAID Card is used for the first time, when the battery enters a conditioning cycle once every three months, or when a computer with a RAID Card installed is shut down for any length of time.
If your RAID card's firmware is M-2.0.3.3 or later, or E-1.2.2.4 or later, you can use RAID Utility to force-enable the write cache while the battery conditions itself. Warning: If you enable the write caches before the battery is fully charged, you might lose some data if the power to your computer is interrupted.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my message. I did a proper backup and normal shut down on Wednesday night and restarted on Monday morning. That was over 100 hours later and certainly more than the battery is specified (72 hours).
When I restarted on Monday morning I noticed ... no change! The battery was fully charged according to the RAID Utility, I received no warning messages, there were no new events in the RAID Utility log ... it's as if the extended shutdown never occurred.
So, an extended shutdown appears not to be a problem and I won't worry about it again, not even on my next extended shutdown for three weeks at the end of the year.
    Regards,
    iPhoton

  • Power Mac G5 and Applications

I'm currently in the market to buy a new Power Mac G5 Intel based. My question is, will my current programs run on the new mac?
I currently use most often: Adobe Creative Suite CS, Studio 8, FlightCheck Professional, QuarkXpress.
Are there any problems I may run into from switching over?
Is there any classic environment at all? I know when I purchased my G4 it didn't come installed on it, but you could install it from the disk.
    Your help is much appreciated.

Intel would be Mac Pro, not G5 similar looking case, forum is over here).
CS3 is Universal Binary. CS2 works also but under Rosetta as do any PPC programs. And there is no official Classic environment.
Just don't migrate older PPC programs, plan on doing fresh installs.

  • Mac Pro RAID 0 setup with bootcamp

I'm about to take the plunge and buy a Mac Pro as soon as I get the money (or credit) to. There have been things here and there that have turned me off but I found ways around some concerns, but this one I haven't been able to find.
I am a musician and want to utilize raw power that Mac does so well with. But unfortunately my DAW of choice doesn't support OS X. I hate Vista, I never upgraded, I stayed with XP but have been willing to change to OS X with XP as well, to get the best of both worlds. Then i find my DAW doesn't support XP 64 bit so i am going to have to use Vista 64-bit (bummer).
What I haven't been able to figure out is if it is possible to run a RAID 0 of the windows OS and all its data. The Mac Pro RAID card doesn't support any Windows OS so i am wondering if there is anyway possible to get the Windows OS in RAID, any good hardware or software that will accomplish this. Like if i get the Mac Pro RAID cad, is there a good software or hardware RAID that will allow me to install windows in a RAID 0 configuration?
If its possible I would have no reasons to not move over, but I really need to have my RAID setup in windows since I am using latency sensitive disk streaming programs that need to stream files in the GBs
Also could I just opt out for the Mac Pro Card and get a generic RAID card that supports both Windows and OS X? And if so any recommendations?
