To the forum, I have long entrusted and used my powermac. Now even after a clean re install, loading applications one by one, the machine is literally slowing to a creep.
As an example, if I have Mail open, and have several tabs on Safari open, the spinning beach ball appears as I go from tab to another tab. Regardless of any type of application running. It just really slow. However, when I boot up, it's darn quick. I have run all the utility cleaning apps, Onyx, Cache Cleaner, etc.
So is the machine just getting old? Is there something else going on? Is there an app that can help ID what the trouble is?

Many have found that using OnyX can help with performance. Of course you should have any important data backed up before using any disk maintenance program.
Also, how much free disk space do you have? If less than 10%, the system will really slow down.

Best to install 10.9 straight up. If you still have your OS 10.9 downloaded file you can use that, or you can go to the app store and download it again. It will be in your previous purchase history. Or you could even upgrade to 10.10. If you want to start from scratch you will need to boot from USB or DVD and initialise (erase) your internal HD. Can I install Mac OS X 10.5 on a Powerbook G4 already running Mac OS X 10.6? I lost my disc of 10.6 and can only find my 10.5 disc as I'm selling my MacBook, and wiping the hard drive for a complete reset.
A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?

I want to purchase a powerbook that will run a music program like MOTU or Pro Tools as well as run Final Cut Pro without being sluggish...any help?
The only way that would work out is if you ran exactly the versions that were made for old PowerBooks. Anything newer may require Intel and not run, or will strain the poor old G4 CPU.
Your needs have to be modest, too, because the problem with older music and video software is that they are not current as far as formats and codecs for the Web. If you want to output H.264, the current standard for YouTube/Flash video, older software may not support it, and in addition, H.264 is processor-intensive and is tailor-made for today's multi-core, 2+ GHz processors. It will overwhelm a G4. A PowerBook G4 can barely play YouTube videos.
More perspective: The PowerBooks worked great for miniDV format editing. In other words, 480i SD/standard definition video in use from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. If that is all you want to do, edit tape from an old miniDV camera to SD output, then OK.
But if you want to edit today's HD video, whether 720p from a snapshot camera/iPhone 4 or 1080p from a DSLR, the PowerBook and the software for it will either not recognize AVCHD/H.264, or it will slow the PowerBook to a dead crawl.
I'm in agreement with the above: Intel Macs have been out for so many years that getting a used one is a much better deal than a dead-end PowerBook. And I loved (still love) my PowerBooks. -

I have purchased a wifi only I pad 3 in the hope I could thether using the 3G through my I phone 4.
My I phone 4 and my iPad 3 cannot seem to find each other at all through Bluetooth yet
Can find other devices ok no problems. I am wondering if it is an issue with os 5.1.1 -
Put my macbook pro to sleep. When I opened it, the desktop window is small and I can't resize it. All applications now run in the smaller size window. Can't make it fill the screen. Just switched from windows. Thank you.

XP is not on any Apple disk, it is a Windows program you would need to buy it, just like Windows 7 -

I am trying to get my system current. I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard"). What should I upgrade to?
The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements. Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

New OS system safari now running slow and crashing repeatedly
Can someone please tell me why my Macbook Air running Safari with just 3 windows open in Safari is now running incredibly slow, barely downloading either java or flash text and invariably causing it to crash with the spinning rainbow appearing almost every 2 minutes.
I am very inept when it comes to computers but cannot believe the new system would cause such problems.

PowerBook Can't Run Airport Management Utility
I'm still trying to find out why my PowerBook can't run Airport Management Utility, even though all of my other Airport software is up to date. When I try to launch the utility, it gives the message that it "requires Airport 3.4 or later", which I do already have.
Below is a description of my latest effort, followed by my original question, which has been archived in this discussion group.
I created and logged in via a new user account, but I still got the same 'requires Airport 3.4 or later' message from Airport Management Utility. I took it from this that the problem was not related to user preferences.
I then used Spotlight to search the Library folder. The only airport pref I found there was com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, located in this path: Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
The computer would not let me move this to the desktop, but copied it instead. I can open that copy in TextEdit, but if I double click on it, it actually launches in OmniOutlner. A check via "Get Info" shows that it is set to "Open with: OmniOutliner" from the drop down menu in the Get Info box.
If you open this plist in OmiOutliner, you find the information I've listed below. It appears to show that the file does know the Airport software version is "5" and not less than 3.4:
• Disconnect on logout 0
• AllowEnable 0
▶ Default 802.1X Configurations
• InterferenceRobustness 0
• Require Admin for network 0
change
• JoinMode 1
• Always remember new networks 1
▶ List of known networks
• Version 5

The only other items in the Library folder with "airport" in the name are both in the Receipts folder: AirportTI2005-001.pkg and AirportConfigApps.pkg.
I'd welcome your thoughts on this.

I have the newest PowerBook G4 , purchased this fall with Mac OS X 10.4.3 and AirPort Update 2005-001 installed.
When I try to run Airport Management utility I get the message : " "The Airport Management Utility requires Airport 3.4 or later. Click Update to check for newer software." While Airport Management Utility will not run on my PowerBook, it does run on my iMac with 10.3.9.
I've tried:
-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001" but it didn't solve the problem.
-installing "AirPort 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.2", thinking that if it were not needed, the installer would not run. It did install, but that did not solve the problem.
-re-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001", which did install a second time, but did not solve the problem. (I thought perhaps the installer for this update wouldn't run a second time.)
Does anyone know of a solution, or does Apple need to update Airport Management Utility?
(I've cross-posted this in the Airport discussion area, but I also wanted to check with others who recently bought the same PowerBook.)

Solution:
The easiest way is to copy the whole AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
If you already have AirPortConfig.framework and AMU is not working, move it to the trash or somewhere else.
I found AirPortConfig.framework in the "AirPort Extreme Software Installation" CD (CD version 4.1 2Z691-5219-A):
1. Open the CD
2. Control-click "AirPort for Mac OX X v10.3" and select Show original
3. Control-click "AirPortSW.pkg" and select Show Package Contents
4. Open Contents
5. Drag Archive.pax.gz to the Desktop
6. Double-click Archive.pax.gz to unarchive the file
7. AirPortConfig.framework is in ~/Desktop/Archive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
8. Drag AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ You will be asked to authenticate.
AMU should work at this point.
Alternatively, download "AirPort 4.1 Update.dmg" from
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
and follow from step 3. above.
This solution seems to work on both Intel and PowerPC machines.
Computers tested: Power Mac G5, Powerbook G4 12" and 17", MacBook Pro.
IMPORTANT: I do not know if this solution breaks anything. CAVEAT EMPTOR!"

I just bought an iMac now running OSX 10.8.4. I have a G5 running OXS 10.5.8 - External HD connected to the G5 been using Time Machine to back up. Need to get my files, photos etc. but not applications etc. onto the iMac. How do I do it?

Not those whole folders, but their contents, maybe.
If the user account now on the Mac has read rights to the user account(s) on the backups, yes. If not, you may have to do some finagling.
Try the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17. If you find an account that can open those folders, restore what you want to an alternate location (#16 in the FAQ).
If not try creating one or more accounts temporarily.
