Powerbook G4 sleeping on the job

Is it possible to have the G4 notebook not go to sleep when you close the lid but instead have it keep running. I have not been able to find any setting for that
Thanks In advance

  • Firewire drives sleeping on the job

I have put turned every energy save preference off and my lacie firewire drives still shut down after awhile until wakened. This is causing a problem when I am printing long clips to video (FCP). I talked to Lacie and they said the drive has no intelligence, firmware or otherwise that would be doing this.

Cocktail has a setting that keeps all drives awake and it is a pretty good maintenance product to boot. I have 3 LaCie Extreme drives and none sleep after the Cocktail fix.

  • My HD's like to go to sleep on the job - Causes one **** of a freeze

PPC G3 Blue & White 400 MHz, 640 MB RAM, 13.6 GB HD (Primary) 6 GB HD (Secondary Storage) on same IDE chain. Primary Dev - 0 secondary dev - 1. Running OS 9.2.2. If you need any other details, ask, and you shall receive...
System boots up fine, no extension conflicts as per first thing I tested.
Performed Disk First Aid from OS Install CD ROM. THe 6 GB HD registered PEOF error, and could not repair. Isolated the problem, backed up files, and initialized the HD zeroing Data.
reformatted to Mac OS - Extended, and now sits empty waiting for storage.
Problem = during operation they system has a mild freeze as one of the HD spins up (Similar sound as during boot of system) and can usually resolve itself in a few minutes. Then after a while, the system completely freezes, and the HD's do the same sound, I can't even move the mouse, and takes hours to resolve. As I have a USB MP3 player, the computer treats it as a disk to mount, and if I improperly remove it, I have this same sort of freeze. It's almost like the HD's unmount, then try to remount when needed. Any one have any IDeas as to what may be happening?
I will be troubleshooting further this weekend. I will be trying to isolate which HD is giving the problem. I will be Installing OS 9 on the 6GB, and will try running the computer with only one HD at a time. Whichever one freezes, is gonna get da boot! It won't be a worry to get rid of, as I will be installing a 30 GB next month.
If anyone out there has any other ideas / suggestions, your help would be greatly appreciated

FIrst thing, Grant, I hate to be the one to tell you this but my Blue & White G3 Hackintosh does in fact support Cable select on the hard drives, and does so quite well I might add.
Anyways, the issue is solved, and thank you to all who submitted their suggestions. The original config by physically designating Master / slave set up caused nothing but PEOF errrors on the disk. This weekend, I attempted to run the hard drives individually to see if one was experiencing physical problems. Once it was determined that both Hardrives function properly, I tried reversing the master slave setup and physically designating Master / Slave with the jumpers. Again, problems. I then shut down, removed the HD's and set the jumpers for both to be cable select. I first booted from the OS disks and performed a full initialize on both HD's, zeroing all data, and a clean OS9 went into my now master 6GB hardrive. After establishing the startup disks, I shut down crossed my fingers, and booted from HD.
Voila! Success. The unit booted fine, and is accepting new software. My backed up files have been integrated to the 13.6GB HD and apps are installed on the 6GB. There hasn't been a single freeze, and the computer has been in a testing mode for 72 hours straight. All functions have been tested thoughroughly, and by the end of the week, I should have everything restored.
After the testing cycle, I ran a performance diagnostic, and found that the system is running at optimum, which is the first time since the whole resurrection process started a month ago.

  • Powerbook does not sleep when the lid is closed

my tibook does not go to sleep when i close the lid. the screen stays on when the lid is closed. the screen was replaced a few months ago. i have to hit the power button and choose sleep or choose sleep from the menu. does anyone know how to fix this. Thanks.

Hi, fatchance. You have a hardware issue. The reed switch that puts the PB to sleep when it is closed is a two-part device. The latch mechanism in the main body of the Powerbook contains a magnet (which you can detect by moving a paper clip over it), and the switch itself is located inside the small latch opening in the display bezel. When the display is closed, the magnet is supposed to actuate the switch, putting the PB to sleep. If that isn't happening on your PB, the switch is broken or its wiring is damaged. Either way, the remedy will be to replace the entire display assembly. It's made not to be disassembled. Most technicians won't do so, because of the great likelihood of damaging the display housing/bezel or the display itself while prying it apart (it's epoxied together). Since the display is the PB's most costly part, replacing it merely to fix your reed switch would be a poor bargain, and I can't recommend it. Just put the PB to sleep manually or set a suitable sleep delay in the Energy Saver control pane instead.

  • IPod USB charging when iBook/Powerbook is sleeping

    Hello all.
We've got two iPods (a 5G and a 4G) and two portable Macs (PowerBook and iBook).
Here's the issue: when our computers are sleeping (ie. the lids are closed), but also plugged into the wall, we could charge our old 4G iPods using the FireWire cables.
Now that one of us has upgraded to a 5G (which doesn't sync through FireWire), and the other has switched to using the USB cable to sync/charge, we've noticed that the iPods don't charge through USB when the computers are asleep but plugged in.
Is this the experience that other iPod/Mac users are having? Is there a way to force the iPods to charge when the computers are sleeping AND powered, or do iBooks and Powerbooks need to be awake to charge an iPod through USB?
I understand why a sleeping iBook or Powerbook that's NOT plugged in wouldn't charge an iPod -- it doesn't with FireWire, after all. But a computer that IS plugged in? How inconvenient if I had to open my computer every time I'm trying to charge up the iPod!
    Please advise. Thanks.

Powering a device through the USB bus requires that the CPU on the host machine be active in order to arbitrate power for different devices and warn the operator if a device is drawing too much power from the bus. Since the CPU doesn't do anything while the computer is asleep, devices cannot be powered while the host is asleep. Power used by FireWire devices is drawn directly from the power supply and doesn't need any information from the CPU while the computer is plugged in. When on battery power, FireWire ports are shut off while the computer is asleep to save battery time.

  • Powerbook not sleeping

I know this is a perennial favourite but I thought I'd see if there were any easy solutions out there ...!
My powerbook has recently stopped going to sleep unless I manually put it to sleep via the Apple menu or power button.
I've scanned the discussions and it seems that this has been a common problem in 10.3.9?
I've tried the usual things like disconecting all periperal devices (I recently got an external firewire drive), I've uninstalled all recently added software, deleted and re-checked all my preferences (e.g. system config folder in prefs) and made sure there are no options ticked to wake my computer.
I can't figure out what might be going on to cause the problem, although the hard disc does make intermittent noises as is something is writing to it/reading it - but there is nothing open apart from finder itself.
I've never had this problem with my powerbook (unlike other machines I've owned) until now...very frustrating!
    Any ideas anyone?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!

  • Disappearing cursor after sleeping for the day

I just bought a 20" ACD and use it with my 12" PowerBook Rev. C. When I take my PB home for the night, I put it to sleep and then unplug everything from its ports. When I wake it up to work at home, it wakes immediately, but the mouse cursor has disappeared. If I move my finger on the trackpad, the computer responds, but without a cursor, i.e. I can activate menus, switch windows, etc. but only if I am lucky enough to land on that part of the screen. Logging out doesn't bring the cursor back, but restarting does. The same thing happens in the morning when I bring my sleeping PB back to the office and plug in to the ACD, this time using the external USB mouse to wake up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

An update: To eliminate the disappearing cursor problem, I now:
    - Plug in the display connection while the computer is sleeping,
    - Open the PB,
    - Plug in the USB hub connection,
    - Close the PB lid to turn off the built in LCD, then use the USB mouse to wake the system.
When leaving the ACD at the end of the day, I:
    - Unplug the USB hub connection,
    - Open the PB,
    - Tell the computer to sleep,
    - Unplug the display connection,
    - Shut the PB lid.
    No more disappearing cursors.

  • Does the miniStack Sleep With the Mac mini?

This question is for those that own a miniStack. Does the miniStack sleep when you put your Mac mini to sleep?
I just purchases a miniStack and am using it with my Powerbook. I noticed that when the miniStack is connected, the Powerbook will never go to sleep. If I choose sleep from the Apple menu, the Powerbook will go to sleep for about 2 seconds and then wake back up. It will only go to sleep if I eject the miniStack, then turn it off, and then the Powerbook will go to sleep.
I was wondering if this was the case for Mac mini users as well, or with any type of firewire drive.
Also, this might be a silly question but, If I boot from my miniStack and then eject it, what will happen?
    Thanks

Hmm my ministack transferring a 30 mb file on USB is whole lot slower than firewire. Took a second for each mb on USB but for the firewire it transfered 30mb in a snap. I don't know what could be the problem. If you do have both connections to your computer (USB & Firewire) then you probably have the drive switch to USB for the HD. Thats the only reason I could think of for the HD being slower than it should be on firewire.
There is a chance of the ministack being defective. I remember when I got the ministack. I plug it in the wall with the computer connected, didn't work. It was so strange. So I turned it back in and came back to me saying it worked for them and only then it started to work. So there might be a chance but for a problem of USB being faster than firewire is what I think is rare.

  • System sleeping all the time

Today my Powerbook G4 with 10.4.6 started going into sleep mode at completely random times with the power adapter plugged in. Normally, sleep occurs only after the screen has dimmed and after the screen saver kicks in. but today it would go to sleep within seconds of my input, with no dimming or screen saver. this only occurrred a few times, not all of the time, but its occurrence was becoming more frequent. i have shut down and started up and it still happens. occurrence is random so i can't really determine if its 'fixed'. i normally keep my laptop on all day and night and dont' shut down for days. i use the battery all the way down and then charge it up, but this was occuring with the adapter in, and the battery works fine. the system preferences are set to sleep after 20 minutes (not 20 seconds).

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.6 Combo PPC update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!

  • System sleeps when the computer shows 40% on a calibrated battery

When my 12" 867 MHz G4 powerbook is fully charged and has been calibrated several times, it sleeps when the computer said that I have 40% life left. Obviously, my machine has a problem knowing how much juice is left in the battery. I have already calibrated it, and when it sleeps, it doesn't even give me any warning. I have destroyed several CDs in the middle of a burn. Any help?

I started having the same problem recently. For a while (a year, maybe), I would get the low battery warning around 30%. In the last week, it has started to go out at about 45-50%, with no warning. I've tried recalibrating. I'm going to reset the Power Manager, then recalibrate. If that doesn't work, I'm going to replace the battery, which is three years old and has gone through 373 load cycles.

  • Need to run the JOB without Ineractive Screen

    Dear All,
We have written a new ABAP program for executing the Macro background Job and used JOB_OPEN,JOB_SUBMIT and JOB_CLOSE Function Modules to run the JOB from ABAP Program.  We are able to run the JOB successfully for Any other ABAP Programs through the custom program, but when I tried with the same approach to run the Macro job through my new ABAP Program the JOB is throwing an error.
    Error Message is like below
    Job started
Step 001 started (program /SAPAPO/TS_BATCH_JOB, variant TEST, user ID GKMN3511
    Specify a start time
Job cancelled after system exception ERROR_MESSAGE
    Point of doubts:
-- Can we really execute the Macro job through the ABAP program with out any dialogue screen (because when I use the "/SAPAPO/MC8G - Schedule Demand Planning in the Backgroundu201D program in my custom program it pop-ups a interactive screen which I don't want in my ABAP program while scheduling the macro job)
    Regards,
    Raju

In transaction /sapapo/mc8t --> define the activity that looks at the macro in question
In transaction /sapapo/ mc8d --> define the job that looks at that activity and a selection iD/aggregation level
In transaction /sapapo/ts_batch_run --> save a variant pointing to the job defined in mc8d
you can then run the /sapapo/ts_batch_run job with that variant

  • Check The Job Status

    Hi SAPsimhas,
    My requirement is as below.
I will loop through an internal table and create some files with background processing method.(JOB_OPEN,SUBMIT & JOB_CLOSE)
Now once this job is triggered I need to check the status for that job after maximum 10 mins. Its not neccessary that each job will take 10 mins. only,It can be finished in 2 mins also.
Once the job is finished then I will XCOM that file.
So my question is how to code such timer which will check the job status for that job? I have a FM BP_JOB_READ which returns the job status.
    Reply is highly appriciated.
