Powerbook won't sleep!

When left unattended my pb will not automatically go to sleep. My settings are set to energy saver. I have had a look on this forum and have seen that other people have this problem but for some reason I cannot seem to sort it out. I have tried re-setting the PMU by pressing shift, ctrl, function and start keys and this doesn't work. Can anyone give me anymore suggestions?

  • Powerbook won't sleep if USB mouse, printer attached: is there fix?

    Hi there,
Thanks to someone, I now know that my powerbook won't stay asleep more than a couple seconds, because I have various USB items attached (mouse, printer, Wacom tablet). I've been having to unplug from the USB port, if I want to put my computer to sleep.
This seems a little ridiculous to me, so I figure there must be a third-party app out there that fixes this issue. Is there? Or is there some other way to fix this, without having to unplug?
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

That sounds like a good idea. I've just tried it and it did nothing but i've found info on the following page that has a different set of keys. It did restart twice as described but the problem is still there:

Thanks for trying though... Any other suggestions?

  • Powerbook won't sleep, just shuts down

I asked about this some time ago and nobody ever had any ideas. I was just curious if someone new had ideas.
My 12inch powerbook g4 won't sleep, if I tell it to sleep, or close the lid it just shuts down. I have changed the settings so that sleeping isn't an option and the screen saver comes on and then the screen goes to power save. The computer can stay like this for days/weeks but if the lid closes it shuts off. Any ideas? All the checks I have run haven't found any issues. I replaced the logic board about a year ago and the problem remained. So, it was either not associated with the logic board or both boards have the same issue. Not sure what else would cause this sort of issue.
    I am now running 10.5.4.

sorry - should have added that I already reset PRAM, PMU, repaired permissions, ran cron scripts

  • Powerbook won't sleep after OS install and update

I replaced the original hard drive with a new drive, installed OS 10.4 from the boot disk, updated to 10.4.11, replaced original apps and user folder via Carbon Copy Cloner. Machine runs great, but won't Sleep, either from Apple menu or closing the lid, wakes up in 1-2 seconds. Had no problems prior to swap.
Airport and Bluetooth are off, nothing plugged into the port. Trashed bluetooth.plist and restarted. Checked Energy Saver, set to "drive sleep when possible". Nothing new showing in StartUp items, or Activity monitor. Same whether battery or plugged in.
The only diiference is that I typo'd my user name. I created a new Sys Prefs/Account, then deleted the old account. I've run Apple Disk Utility Repair/Permissions amd Onyx maintenance. Nothing scheduled to run in CCC or Onyx.
    Any advice is appreciated!

    Thanks BGreg,
I did Software Update via WiFi. It took multiple passes, as Java would install, Software Update would recheck, and then download the next version. Took about 5 passes, with 2-3 restarts to have everything updated vai S.U.
I used a generic Tiger disc as the boot disc.

  • Powerbook won't  sleep automatically

    Hi,
im reposting because no one replied to my initial post, my powerbook recently stop going to sleep on its on unless i do it manually. Every other energy saving settings works normally the display sleeps after a while but not the computer itself. Does anyone know whats going on?
    Any help would be appreciated
    cheers

    Hi El Pres. --
I'm not sure here, but three things come to mind, but first two questions of my own:
    • First, when you say the PB won't go to sleep unless you put it to sleep manually, do you mean that it just won't go to sleep when you close the lid, or does it also fail to go to sleep with the lid open after a set amount of time as well?
    • Second, just so I'm clear, when you say you put the PB to sleep "manually," you mean you go to the Apple menu, select sleep and click, right?
Now, here are the only things that come to mind, in no particular order:
    • First, you might try setting up a test account, separate from the one you normally use, and log in to that account and try putting the 'Book to sleep by means other than manually -- first by inactivity, using energy saver settings, and another time by closing the lid. See if either or both work when logged in to your test account.
    • Second, you might try resetting your Power Management Unit. Instructions on how to reset your PMU can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    • Third, and this is the one I'm least hoping is the case, but it unfortunately may be worth thinking about: if your PB does go to sleep after a set amount of inactivity via as per your Energy Saver settings, but does not go to sleep when closing the lid, you may have a hardware problem related to the lid's latching mechanism. WIth my 'Book, it's only when the lid has firmly latched, will the unit enter sleep mode.
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention: throughout all your tests of the computer's sleep mode, keep an eye on the little "sleep light" on the latch button and make a note of when you see it pulsing as it properly should and when you do not. This information may help you, us, or, if need be, an AASP or Apple tech, better understand what's happening inside your machine.
Post back if any of the above yields further useful info, or if you learn more otherwise.
    Good luck.

  • My PowerBook Won't sleep properly

    Hi all,
Quick question - my laptop doenst sleep properly when you close the lid - the light doenst 'breathe', and the computer stays hot like it has been running. The battery is always empty when i come back to use it. I have seen on the forum that this is happening a bit... any sugestions????
    Thanks

I don't know if you saw the very long discussion of this topic here. I have been following this for a long time as my MacBookPro has had the same problem off and on since I got it last September. Near the end of the topic is this message that says that you may have a hardware malfunction that Apple will fix:

I would suggest taking it to your local Apple repair shop.

  • New iMac display won't sleep?

Hi, new iMac 24", 10.5.7, set screen saver at 5 minutes, and display to sleep at 10 minutes. Screen saver works, but it will not sleep. I've changed the setting, and rebooted, still no luck.
I tried everything from suggestions, with no help. I found that if I turn off "screen sharing" in system preferences, it will sleep the display for whatever minutes I set. I have to leave "screen sharing" on because I have flat screen tv hooked up to watch video files on, and I use iPhone app to control screen, to hit play and pause, etc. It is set up with a password, and only my iPhone is used when I am watching something. Why should screen sharing stop display from sleeping? I've left screen sharing on since I got this, so I can remotely log in with "back to my mac" from the road, and it never stopped the display from sleeping before? I shouldn't have to turn off screen sharing just to sleep the display? Am I missing something?

    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

  • Insomnia - - My Mac won't SLEEP

    Hi folks,
I just re-installed OS 10.5.4, ... and began to have a couple buggy behaviours:
Primarily, my computer won't respond when I try to put it in SLEEP mode.
Also, there is a funky little 1/4" square that appears in every window that opens. Clicking & dragging over it makes it go away, but it then reappears on the next open window.
p.s. In an attempt to 'fix' these anomolies, I downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8 but this didn't help.
Any ideas ????? (This is my second post... with no responses).
    Thanks,

  • G4 MDD won't sleep

    Hi everyone,
This problem began when I was running Panther, and today I upgraded to Tiger, but the problem persists.
My computer won't go into sleep mode. When I try to put it to sleep, the display shuts off, but the computer is still running. At that point, I try clicking the mouse and/or keyboard, pressing the power button, trying various combinations of control/escape/apple keys to execute a hard quit, but nothing I do gets the display to come back up or the computer to power off or restart. So I'm forced to cut the power to the CPU and then power it back on. I know this is terrible for the computer, and I hate to do it, but I don't really have any other option.
When the problem first appeared, I could at least get the computer to shut down, but now it won't even do that. It gets to the spinning wheel screen and just hangs there, and again, I have to resort to cutting the power.
It's crazy to have to go through all this, and I certainly don't want to damage my computer. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem, and/or any ideas for a fix?
    Many thanks!
    Kate

If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
