PPD: Adobe missing

I'm following POD printer's instructions for creating a PDF. Rather than use the Adobe PDF output option of InDesign, the printers advise that a postscript file be created first, then processed in Acrobat Distiller for the final pdf.
The first step in printing the ps file from ID requires that in the print dialog box under PPD, an Adobe PDF be selected, however, the only option in the menu box is "Device Independent". What needs to be done?
A quick forum search returned similar but somewhat more complicated scenarios. I'm using CS3 and Windows 7. Thank you in advance.

Frankly, Distiller's function is not clear to me; I am merely followoing Ingram/Lightninig Source's instructions to the T, which print millions of books, literally, per year for smaller and larger clients (Harper Collins, Oxford Univeristy Press). Their instructions are below, and I'm quite sorry for the length here, but, and I'll leave it to you, the Adobe experts, to judge how misinformed they may be:
Exporting InDesign
In InDesign, first select FILE > Export
Select a location to save your PDF
Beside “Format” select Adobe PDF (Print)
Click “Save”
For “Adobe PDF Preset” choose PDF/X1a 2001
or PDF/X3 2002
Reviewing a PDF Before Submission
In the Acrobat menu bar select File > Properties
Select the “Descriptions” tab.
Near the bottom of the window, you will see a listing for
“Page Size:” followed by width and height dimensions.
Please, verify that the PDF document dimensions match
the dimensions necessary to comply with Lightning
Source requirements for the item you are uploading.
(My note: in their example, PDF Producer field shows Distiller)
Font Embedding
Within the same dialogue box select the “Fonts” tab.
Beside the name of each font you should see
(Embedded) or (Embedded Subset). If you do not see
those words your fonts are not correctly embedded and
Lightning Source will not be able to process your file.
Reviewing a PDF Before Submission
Color Mode And Resolution
In the Acrobat menu bar select:
Edit > Preflight (Acrobat 10)
Select the “Profiles” tab and scroll down to select “PDF
Analysis”.
• Click the arrow to expand the available options.
Select “List page objects, grouped by
type of object” and click “Analyze”.
A list of results will appear. Click on the triangle(s) next to
“Resolution of color and grayscale images” to view a
listing of all images present in the PDF.
For covers Lightning Source recommends CMYK 300ppi
images and for interiors recommends 1-bit black & white
line art at 600 ppi and 8-bit grayscale 300ppi continuous tone
images.
Checking for Spot Colors and Color Density
In the Acrobat menu bar select:
Windows > Tools > Print Production and select
Output Preview (v10)
This window will list all colors used in your document and
percentages of each color. The only colors that should be
present are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. If any spot
colors are used please return to the application used to
create your document and covert all colors to CMYK.
When the Output Preview window is open you can move
your cursor over the PDF and view the CMYK values in your
file. This is a good time to verify that the barcode used is
100% black only and that your cover does not have large
areas of color that exceed 240% Total Area Coverage.
If concerned about excessive color density you can select
the box at the bottom of the window labeled “Total Area
Coverage”, select a maximum limit and all offending areas
will be highlighted.

Once again Adobe misses the mark on keeping in touch with the Android community (at this point larger than iOS)

Yes very sad to see no Android support or indeed any other mobile platform.  He kept saying the three pillars, "Desktop Apps, Mobile Apps, Services".  He should have just said "Apple Mobile", "Apple Mobile", "Apple Mobile".
I tried to cancel my subsciption becuase it has now been devalued by one third but guess what?   it is currently impossible to do so using your online account management.  Amazing!!
I have been given a phone number to call, lets see if that works!!

  • I don't have a PPD Adobe PDF 8 setting, HELP!

    Hello,
I'm on a crunch deadline, and recently switched to a new computer. I have to make a post script file for a newspaper with seperations. However, every time I do, the PDF default to an 8half by 11 inch pdf. The ad is full page newspaper, so obviously, I'm missing alot of ad.
I think I narrowed it down to setting my PPD in the Print Dialog to Adobe PDF 8.0. Unfortunately, it's not there. How can I get it? Or what must I do to make my seperation postscript come out correctly sized?
Please help, I only have a few hours before this is due!

    Huckle Berry,
    <br />
<br />I can now say with some confidence that the problem you have with not seeing Adobe PDF 8 in the Printer pop up in the Print dialog is not a Leopard problem. Let me explain.
    <br />
<br />I posed the following question with a Preps Tech support person:
    <br />
<br />"I &#160;simply want to know if Adobe PDF 8 (as installed by Acrobat Pro
<br />8.1.2) shows up in the Print pop up button in the InDesign Print
<br />dialog in *Leopard*? I cannot test that myself, as I do not have
    <br />Leopard yet."
    <br />
<br />and received the following reply:
    <br />
<br />"Yes, I believe it does. Heres a screen capture of the evidence.

    <br />
<br />In the same exchange with this support person, I learned that the virtual printer method that I was offering you indeed does NOT work in Leopard, so it would not have worked for you. But the method you were referring to in your original post should work in Leopard. So there is something else malfunctioning in you set up.
    <br />
<br />Not what you wanted to hear, at least now you can pursue the real problem. I does seem like Adobe is not at fault here.

  • Quickoffice and adobe MISSING after reset

    Hello Everyone,
I resetted my E7 yesterday, and noticed that Quickoffice and Adobe readers disappeared!
I tried reinstalling Belle from the nokia suite, all went well, but QO & Adobe are still missing.
I tried deleting the downloaded installation files from c:\users\all users directory, re-downloading the nokia belle update (~350mb) and re-reinstalling the OS, but still QO and Adobe are missing.
I tried *#7370#, "delete and restore" etc, but to no avail.
I tried changing OSes - WinXP, Win7, Win7 64bit etc, but still no avail.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Tks.

    Hi northwinde,
    Welcome to Nokia discussions board!
Quickoffice and Adobe are both downloaded applications, they will be erased if you do a hard rest on the device. To get them back, you can just download them from here Quickoffice and  PDF Reader. If you paid already for them, just go on the market > History then download them again.

  • Ppd adobe low memory in printer information

in the current printer description file PPD for a Xerox phaser 8560n- Total Memory installed is 256 MB but says Only 11.6 MB Total Memory Available. also os9.1 is very slow to open Print Desktop set up.
any ideas? what may be happening or not . thanks
we used Adobe 8.6 postscript driver setup and also the PPD xerox os9  CD  that came with printer. also did resetting printer to defaults factory.

Total Memory installed is 256 MB but says Only 11.6 MB Total Memory Available.
That Memory info is just for the printer, and not the Mac, correct? If so, try turning the printer off, wait a minute or so, then turn it back on. Doing so should clear its RAM.
Having the printware set to download all fonts can eat up a lot of printer memory; using the setting to allow it to use its built-in fonts wherever possible saves a lot of font downloading.

  • PPD's missing

I installed InDesign CC 2014 and now I no longer have my printers PPD file accessible. What can I do?

I suspect you're on a Mac. Tell what operating system you're running.
In case you are on a Mac, this article may help you out:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/creating-postscript-files-in-snow-leopard-for-older-print-workf lows.php
Workflows that still use PPDs are generally outdated, being replaced by creating PDF files by using File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print).

  • When printing in Adobe, missing the Custom Scale option.

    Adobe Version 11.0.2
    Windows 7 64 bit.
Doesn't matter what type of network printer I select.  When selecing to print a document, under Page Sizing & Handling, there is no "Custom Scale" option.  There is on other workstations.
    Thank you.

Very strange.  The only thing I can suggest is to update to 11.0.5.

  • Flash Player 10:  Adobe Misses the Mark

When I heard about the Flash Player 10 launch, I was
initially excited: there was some buzz about GPU optimization.
However, when I saw the new product demo, I was very disappointed.
Yes, there is GPU compositing, (useful for video and alpha
channel stuff) - but there has still been almost no movement toward
addressing what every developer will tell you is the main reason
Flash can not be used to develop a real-world application: it's too
damn slow. Without support for hardware rendering, Flash will
remain a sandbox toy for prototyping.
Adobe, please, please; listen to what developers have been
    telling you for years:
Flash is too slow. It needs to be optimized for faster
    playback. Really.
Frankly, no one is impressed with the real time Photo-shop
filters. Who the hell wants to "crystallize" a text field?
I have a message for the product manager who kept developers
employed creating those idiotic, time-wasting features:
"F___ you and the lens flare you rode in on."

    Chris,
Your post started out reasonable, but degenerated pretty
    quickly into
angry flamebating, so I'm not sure what sort of answer (if
    any) you're
    hoping for.
    > Without support for hardware rendering, Flash will
    > remain a sandbox toy for prototyping.
Flash Player 9,0,115,0 and higher supports hardware
    acceleration. I'm
not sure if that's what you mean by "hardware rendering," but
    this feature
does increase certain kinds of rendering overall. As for "toy
    prototyping"
... I guess you haven't seen (or aren't impressed with) the
    numerous app
examples out there, whether created in Flash or Flex. You
    haven't stated
what you consider an application with muscle, so it's hard to
    guage what
    you're referring to.
    > Adobe, please, please; listen to what developers have
    > been telling you for years:
    > Flash is too slow. It needs to be optimized.
ActionScript 3.0 benchmarks at 10 times the execution speed
    of AS2,
thanks to the AVM2 (ActionScript Virtual Machine 2) module in
    Flash Player 9
and higher. The new virtual machine *has* been optimized: it
    was
re-written from the ground up, and the API differences
    between AS3 and AS2
reflect that. AS3 also allows for runtime types, which means
    objects
    request less system memory.
    > Frankly, no one is impressed with the real time

  • Printing to Adobe - missing or wrong formatted first line

I open a PDF file. Then I select a part of the content that I want to print into another PDF.
    I choose Adobe PDF print.
When the result show up, I see only half of the first line. And sometimes even half of the last line.
We are using Windows 7 and acrobat pro 9.
Anyone has an idea what's going wrong?
    Thanks in advance
    Greetings
    Lainkes

    Hi Lainkes,
How are you printing the selected part of the PDF content?
I tried by selecting an area using "Snapshot Tool" and then File-->Print. From the "Print" dialog box, selected the "Selected Graphic" radio button.
    The output was as desired.
Are your steps different than mentioned above? Does your PDF contains Text or Images or Both?

  • PPD files missing for Canon Printers in Cups

    Hi,
trying to install my Canon mp 160 I get confused in cup's "add printer" section because
I cannot choose "Canon" from the Make list. Also there are no canon specific PPD files in /usr/share/cups/model

  • How to install Adobe printer's 'postscript driver' in mac os x

    hello again,
as posted recently hv a problem with adobe printer's postscript driver (ppd),In Indesign cs4 It shows ppd is missing while making Print File(.ps),
pls suggest how to install ppd again, i tried to install ppd driver downloaded from adobe website, but it fails to install.
    pls help.

I guess you didn't read the link I gave you inthe other thread...
Here's one of the comments that you would have found:
Short description to the workaround Solutions
    1) Usual workaround for printing with Distiller under SL and InDesign CS4:
Copy the PPD called “ADPDF9.PPD” (download-link here in this topic) to Library/Printers/PPDs /Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Works for CS4. Problem: Does NOT work for CS5.
    2) Workaround for InDesign CS5:
    - Go to Applications/Adobe Indesign CS5/Presets
    - Create a folder called “PPDs” (attention: foldername is case-sensitive!)
    - Copy the PPD called “ADPDF9.PPD” (download-link here in this topic) into this folder.
    - PostScript Printer will be useable within InDesign CS5
Hope that helped and clears up all questions so far.
    Cheers, hi2hello

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5 Support is stonewalling me

They are saving a problem is on my machine my preferences corrupt they have me reset them and then they had me create a new user account with administrator authority and the bug is still solid.
Noel if your reading this would you plaese make a simple test on your machine.  Open a jpeg file so there is just a background layer in the Photoshop document. Then load the Adobe action set "Image Effects" and run the actions "Neon Edges" and "Fluorescent Chalk" on my Windows 32 bit maching they both fail the same wat in step "Hide current layer" they get a Photoshop pop-up message "Hide" is not currently available "Continue" or "Stop" if you hit continue you loose the layer the actions was trying to protect.  In previous versions of Photoshop these actions worked because you could hide the background layer layer when it was the only layer in a document in CS5 this is not possible.

Okay, I've found the menu items in the Actions palette menu that cause the pre-packaged actions to be loaded.  I never noticed those before, I suppose, because I never needed them.  Certainly I've been looking at that menu for many years.  That's a bit embarrassing.
Indeed, Neon Edges run on a simple, flat image fails in Photoshop CS5, CS4, and CS3 with this error:
Photoshop versions CS2 through 6.0 (I did not test 7.0 because I never had it) DO run the action without failure, though I can't say that the results in any way remind me of "Neon Edges".
Looking over the Neon Edges action, I have to say that it isn't programmed properly...
    Action: Neon Edges
      Make snapshot
       From: Current History State
       Using: full document
      Convert Mode
       To: RGB color mode
      Reset Swatches
      Hide current layer
      Duplicate current layer
      Duplicate current layer
      Glowing Edges
       Edge Width: 1
       Edge Brightness: 15
       Smoothness: 15
      Set current layer
       To: layer
       Mode: overlay
      Set current layer
       To: layer
       Opacity: 60%
      Merge Visible
Why would one want to hide a layer, then duplicate it and try to operate upon it?
In fact, the earlier versions of Photoshop AREN'T actually hiding the layer, they are just failing to hide the background layer without any complaint.  The new version pops up an error message to let you know you've done something wrong.  I think that's progress.
Your earlier point, however, in another thread about the packaged actions not actually working and Adobe missing it during testing was right on target.

  • Printing to Adobe PDF from AI CS6

    Hi.
    I gotta weird problem.
Some time ago i bought Adobe Design Premium CS6 for MAC OSX.
So, as You all probably know - I got Acrobat PRO with Adobe PDF driver.
But this driver is not shown in the Print dialog box in Adobe Illustrator.
I can print to "postscript file", but I can't choose PPD "Adobe PDF", so:
    - I can't change printed document's size
    - I can't change printerd document's orientation
    - I can't print file with trimboxes etc.
I had the same problem with InDesign, but I've found a folder where I should copy Adobe PDF PPD - but I can't find it in AI folder.
Does anybody know a way to fix it?
I need that function back, quick :-)

    OK.
I use Acrobat 10.1.8 - and for example in AI I don't have a button called "Save As Adobe PDF".
Other question is if using that button (if I had one) it is possible to add trimboxes and manually choose document's size?

  • Adobe Flex 4 Suggestion

It seems that adobe has left out visual design from Flex 4 totally. I understand why the changes to the underlying code. But to cut out designers with no real way of visually designing components is just sucks.  Catalyst  may take care of some of the issues but not all.  If you have to code everything, then you need to give a lot better help and working examples. Am I the only one who thinks Adobe missed this.....

But looking to the future, I have to assume steps will be made to make html/ajax so that you don't see all those browser issues, or that it is easy to do a data grid etc.
This is true, and is actually somewhat dealt with already (although not on par with Flex component richness yet).  However a problem that DHTML/AJAX is not likely to ever resolve is the problem of maintainability.  New browsers or updated browsers can break AJAX mock-RIAs.  This requires additional work (in contrast to Flex) where, even if your application requires no updates, there is still a process that needs to be followed.
AJAX apologists like to reply that "their flavor-of-the-month DHTML library people handle these updates and keep everything working".  But their application has a dependency on that library (which it's maintainers may or may not indefinitely keep up to date), which means a mandatory delay in fixing any problems that come up, and an update of their application to use the new library version if an update was needed.  This is not trivial, as any decent software shop must do the usual test/patch/test cycle each time a browser they want to support has changed.
Anyway, back to the maintenance-light world of Flex (as long as Adobe doesn't get into the habit of constantly deprecating component sets...).  The problem with using Halo (as mentioned in my other thread recently created on the topic) is that Adobe has not, to the best of my knowledge, told us whether it is official deprecated and/or if it will be "going bye bye" at some point in the future.  I have no problem with continuing to use Halo, and may just do that, however at the same time I'd like to know what the fate of the component set is.
