Preflight error: "character references .notdef glyph"

I have a 4 page document in InDesign that I exported as separate page pdfs. Three pages were fine, but one has garbled type. A preflight check shows this error for the bad text on that one page:
"Character references .notdef glyph"
I can't see anything different about those sentences, but tried replacing them with fresh type. Also tried exporting the InDesign document as an INX file and reopening it. Tried copying the page to a fresh document. None of these worked. I'm baffled. I use that font for this newspaper every month and have never seen this problem before, although this is the first time with the CS4 apps.
I can convert the text to outline, but want to solve this.
Thanks for any ideas.
(Mac Pro, CS4 software)

The font is Utopia regular, a postscript type 1 font. InDesign version CS4, Quark 6 I believe. The pdf was created in InDesign (export.. Adobe PDF..press quality, PDF/X1A 2001). I also tried exporting a postscript file and running it through Distiller, but got the same result.
This is the same font and same method I have been using for a long time, the only thing that is new is CS4 versions of ID and Acrobat. The rest of the document did not have these errors. I tried pasting the text into a text program (and then pasting back) to clear away possible formatting, but that didn't help.
Hope you have some suggestions.
Thanks

• PDF/A Conversion Err :CIDset in subset font is incomplete & Character references .notdef glyphs

I was trying to convert some PDF documents to PDF/A-3b. Using Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows Vista PC, the conversion proceeded fine, but I noticed the size of the converted file increased from 1.91 Mb to 16.8 Mb (See spage usage audits below). I expected some increase in size due to the font embedding and such, but did not expect such a big jump. On Auditing the space usage, I noticed that the converted file had no embedded fonts, but the vast majority of space was being consumed by images. Turns out the "Convert to PDF/A-3b" profile in Preflight settings were set to convert all pages to images, if the regular conversion failed. I edited the profile to not do so, but fail on an error. This time when I passed the document through a "Convert to PDF/A-3b" pre-flight, it failed with the following errors.
CIDset in subset font is incomplete (font contains glyphs that are not listed). It appears to be referring to the Arial and TimesNewRoman fonts.
Character references .notdef glyph
How do I fix these errors? For the CIDset error, I noticed some folks in the InDesign forums mentioning you can locate the missing glyphs and then replace the fonts with other fonts in which these glyphs are present. I am wondering if this is the issue here and something similar can be done in Acrobat. As for the .notdef glyphs, I couldn't find anything. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron
Note:
If I edit the conversion preflight profile to allow replacing the pages with images on regular conversion errors, the conversion goes through fine, but as shown below, there is a huge jump in size, which I would like to avoid. I have about 2GB worth of documents, and the conversion ends up using over 8 GB of space.

What software are you using to do OCR?
Is there a way you can adjust what font is being used by the OCR software or use a different software for OCR? This is not a standard OpenType font or one the can be mapped to Unicode.
I'm not sure exactly how OCR software places fonts in PDFs. Does it show up in the PDF Properties under Fonts? If so, what is the name of the Font.
When you examine the Tagged text in the Tags Panel, if you open up a tag and look at the content does it make sense or is it nonsense (gobbledygook)?
While OCR text is not visible to the end user directly, it can be selected using the text tool and it is recognized by Acrobat for tagging purposes. The Assistive Technology, e.g., screen reader. will be reading from this text. So if it is not understandable you do not have an accessible file.
You would probably obtain better results using the Acrobat OCR feature, preferably on a Windows machine. It's been a while since I've exchanged files between Mac and Windows, and I wouldn't trust that the encodings would be the same without testing it.

• Mapping error: Character reference "&# 00" is an invalid XML character

Hi All,
Iam performing the RFC(R/3) -> PI(7.1) -> SOAP (third party software) ; Synchronous scenario.
The messages are reaching the PI server , but the a mapping errors is occurring due to dummy characters ""& #00" been sent to the XI system.
Is this due to the R/3 sending the invalid characters or these been generated in PI system. Would you suggest any notes,patches to resolve the issue?

Hi,
If you go through this link last page and last para, which says..
"The only solution is to use a Java mapping before the actual mapping to perform the escaping."

• LPX-00217 invalid character error - Using reference characters in XML file

Hi, I hope you will help me to understand and to fix the error I get during insert of an XML file into a table with XML Type field.
I used Oracle documentation for this:
1. Create table
CREATE TABLE XMLDOC
( XMLCOLUMN xmltype);
2. Create external directory
CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY FILESDIR AS 'E:\ora_xml_test\';
3. Create function
CREATE OR REPLACE function DSS.getClobDocument(
filename in varchar2,
charset in varchar2 default NULL)
return CLOB deterministic
is
file bfile := bfilename('FILESDIR',filename);
charContent CLOB := ' ';
targetFile bfile;
lang_ctx number := DBMS_LOB.default_lang_ctx;
charset_id number := 0;
src_offset number := 1 ;
dst_offset number := 1 ;
warning number;
begin
if charset is not null then
charset_id := NLS_CHARSET_ID(charset);
end if;
targetFile := file;
DBMS_LOB.fileopen(targetFile, DBMS_LOB.file_readonly);
DBMS_LOB.LOADCLOBFROMFILE(charContent, targetFile,
DBMS_LOB.getLength(targetFile), src_offset, dst_offset,
charset_id, lang_ctx,warning);
DBMS_LOB.fileclose(targetFile);
return charContent;
end;
And now appears the problem when I use different character references - one of them are parsed by the XML parser and another -are not:
test1.xml - Contains a charachter from Latin language -ă (&#x103)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Please help!!!

Which database version are you using and what is the characterset used during its creation...?
There is a lot on this forum which has been already answered / addressed but the database must support it, in other words the characterset must support it. Among others, see Re: XML-Document with special characters for instance.
Conversion like you are doing (&#x103) is not needed.

The error message should have included a line number for you to reference back to your code to know what line the error was occurring on.
That said, look at the documentation for SUBSTR as you are using the third parm incorrectly. It is length, not end position. That's your issue.

• RFC to JDBC - Character reference invalid XML character

Dear all Gurus,
I have developed a RFC to JDBC scenareo and when trying to pass data i get a error saying (sxmb_moni) - "Runtime exception occurred during application mapping com/sap/xi/tf/_MM_de_cx_xd01_va01_2_Siebel_; com.sap.aii.utilxi.misc.api.BaseRuntimeException:Character reference ("&#00") is an invalid XML character"
I dont pass any blank values here & tried to pass one value(there is only one not null value in the table) to the Oracle Table again above error accurs.

Hi,
You can solve this problem performing following steps in your ECC system:
1. Go to transaction sm59 and locate the RFC Destination for your PI system. Double-click to open it.
2. Perform a "Unicode Test" using the button in top menu or pressing Ctrl+F5. The result will either say "Target is a unicode system" or "is NOT a unicode system".
3. Go to "MDMP & Unicode" tab page and set Non-Unicode or Unicode connection mode, depending on the result of your test in step 2.
Alternatively, you can also find your Sender Communication Channel in PI's ID and set the Unicode indicator there - it should be consistent with what is set in sm59 in your backend system.
Hope this helps,
Greg

• Character reference "&#0" is an invalid XML character

Pl shelp me to resolve this

My xml file contains illegal char such as 0x00 0x10 am trying to
remove them and replace them with " &#14 or &#16" he SAX parser says " &#14 or &#16" an illegal inavlid char.
What would be the probable solution for this.

• [CS4 JS] Test for Preflight Errors

Hi,
Is it possible to test for preflight errors. If so, how?
I want to allow export of an EPS only if an embedded preflight profile shows no errors.
Thanks
Simon Kemp

var myPreflight = app.preflightProcesses[0];
var myReport = myPreflight.processResults;
myReport = myReport.replace(/\s+$/,"");
if (myReport == "None")
My problem is that this script doesn't distinguish between the Preflight for the current document and that for any other document that may be open. I assume it is using the FIRST Preflight process created which will not always be for the current document.
Is there a way to reference the Preflight for the current document only? Searching for "Preflight" in the Object Model Viewer in ExtendScript Toolkit bring up No Results.
maybe you should check this "array":
Property AggregatedResults As Variant
read-only
Member of InDesign.PreflightProcess
The aggregated results found by the process. Type: Ordered array containing DocumentName:String, ProfileName:String, Results:Array of Ordered array containing ParentNodeID:Long Integer, ErrorName:String, PageNumber:String, ErrorInfo:String, ErrorDetail:Array of Ordered array containing Label:String, Description:String
or maybe you should set PreflightScope - to your Document - in PreflightOptions:
Property PreflightScope As Variant
Member of InDesign.PreflightOption
The pages or documents to preflight, specified either as an enumeration or a string. To specify a range, separate page numbers in the string with a hyphen (-). To specify separate pages, separate page numbers in the string with a comma (,). Type: idPreflightScopeOptions enumerator or String

• ORA-06502: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small

I have a stored proc with a parameter pio_med_rec_nbr patient.med_rec_nbr%TYPE
where patient.med_rec_nbr is a varchar2(12) .
character set is we8mswin1252 semantics are bytes
the stored proc retrieves max(med_rec_nbr) into nTmp( number) from a reference table
and does pio_med_rec_nbr := lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0')
which throws the ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too smallwhen I check the length, I get length(pio_med_rec_nbr) = 12
I can pass one digit or null but no more. Any idea what I need to do to debug this? I can do xxtmp := lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0') where xxtmp varchar2(255), so I know the assignments are okay.
Thanks,

Do, pio_med_rec_nbr := trim(lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0') )

There is not a chance in the world, especially not knowing column definitions that I, and I suspect most anyone else, is going to wade through this much unformated code looking for an error you couldn't bother to copy in full.
Either tell us, specifically, the line on which the error is occurring or, better yet, start whacking stuff out of your code until you find the offending definition. That is certainly what I would do. Commenting out sections is a marvelous way to quickly find an issue.
Before you post again please read the FAQ. It will explain to you how to properly post and use the tags.

A select list is limited in size. I am not sure what the limit is but that is definitelly the case.The maximum size for the HTML generated for a select list is 32K.
86 options sounds on the low side to be hitting that limit, but there are other concerns to this as well. Scrolling through hundreds/thousands of options in a select list is a pain for users, and huge select lists produce bloated pages that impact load times and network bandwidth. That list of around 200 countries you find on many sites is about the sensible maximum length for a select list.
You should use popups.Indeed.

• Report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number

The oracle application express environment is created by installing the HTTP Server on the windows server and the application express 3.2.1 components on the 11.1.0.7 oracle database on UNIX. The installation is successfully and have not seen any issues during the installation. After completing all the steps, when tried to login and click the application builder or workspace components, I see the error message
report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number.
This error message is seen on most of the pages when trying to accessed and not able to understand the reasons behind it. Its a brand new environment setup and not even presented to developers to test it.
Below error message is always seen when trying to access most of the components like application builder, schema comparison and some other tabs. Please advice

I think its better you use APEX 4.x version ratherthan using old version.
You will get more features and some bug fixes and also it's easy for you to get some help when you need.

• Report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string bu

We face the above error in HTMLDB (APEX) application Ver 3.1.0. This occurs when we try to display more number of rows/records in drop-down list (LOV in tabular forms). We are able to display 200 records in LOV. When the list of records exceeds 230, we face the below error
report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
the values listed in LOV are from tables (one of the columns in table)
Could anyone give us a solution?

Hi
As you are using a tabular form, you could actually do the following:
1 - In the tabular form column's attributes, set the following:
Display as: Select List (query based on LOV)
Display extra values: Yes
List of values definition: SELECT null d, null r FROM DUAL
2 - Add a new page item and set it to generate your select list
3 - Create an HTML region with no template and use the following for its source:
<script type="text/javascript">
function loadList(c, l)
var s = document.getElementsByName(c);
var lItem = document.getElementById(l);
var lLength = lItem.options.length;
var k;
var j;
var x = lItem.innerHTML;
var v;
var o;
var z;
for (k = 0; k < s.length; k++)
z = s[k];
v = z.value;
z.options.length = 0;
for (j = 0; j < lLength; j++)
o = new Option()
o.value = lItem[j].value;
o.text = lItem[j].text;
z.options[j] = o;
z.value = v;
if (z.selectedIndex == -1)
z.selectedIndex = 0;
loadList("f05", "P1_MGR");
</script>
(Change "f05" and "P1_MGR" as appropriate to your column and your new page item respectively)
Now, when you load the page, the select list contains a null entry plus the entry already on the database. The javascript kicks in automatically, loops through every entry in the "f05" column, copies the existing value, replaces the select list with the new page item version and sets its value to the copied value.
Your new page item could be in a DIV tag that has a style of "display:none" to hide it from view.

Hi,
I was able to resolve the issue. I changed it to = To_Number while assigning.
and for other issue, earlier I choose "Select List" for drop down. I changed this to "Select list with Submit". for the issue of "depending on this values in the report should get change"
Thanks for your support,
