This is pretty self-explanatory.
Run in Admin does not kick in when launching a file via a Taskbar's pinned app icon, even when the pinned app has been set to 'Run in Admin' mode (under Properties -> Advanced).
The same thing happens in the Start Menu -- the app can be set (Properties -> Advanced) to Run in Admin mode, and the file does not launch this way.
Why is this a problem? Because if one is supposed to use accounts like MS asks, then running as a standard user after having a file created in an admin account, that user cannot alter the doc in any way -- no saves work. At least this is true for files not on the C partition. The only way W7 permits saves is to run an app in Admin mode.
(I've run into this countless times in the span of a few days with Notepad & PSPad.)
If the W7 team wants to insist that docs won't automatically run in Admin mode under these conditions (which they should!!!!!!), then at least give users a right-click context menu option to Run as Admin from the recent/pinned items list. Currently there is no such context menu option.
Thereby, all recent items / pinned items are rendered a useless feature.....
Still loving this OS.
a.k.a.Sorry but this is not an answer. The answer to the question is that you cannot run pinned items with the same properties as the pinned program.
I'll use Visual Studio as an option here but I'm assuming this is true for any program.
Yes, right click on the pinned program and choose the Advanced settings and you can have it run as administrator by default. For SharePoint development for example this is great (and required). You have to run Visual Studio as admin on the local box
in order to deploy your solutions from within Visual Studio.
Even if you pin the program to the start menu or taskbar after you've set it to run as administrator it works.
What doesn't work are pinned files. Visual Studio will pin the last 5 or so solutions you've opened. This is handy if you're flipping back and forth between solutions and saves you an extra step when launching the program in that you can select it from the
context menu that appears attached to the taskbar icon.
However regardless of the setting of the pinned program, files launch in regular user mode and do not respect the "run as administrator" setting on the pinned program. I consider this a bug as it should respect the setting. And as nesmond mentioned, it makes
pinning solutions in Visual Studio useless if you need to run the program as administrator. So the best scenario you have is to pin it and set it to run as administrator but then manually open the file after launching. There is no way to have the shortcuts
that are pinned to run as administrator. -

This is normal, for we disabled the option
Move the contents of Start Menu to the new location. This option is enabled by default and it will automatically move the existing content to the new location.
At this moment, we can manually copy the files we want from the local locations.

Search in start menu don't work, Windows 7, sp1.
Hi guys!
I have this really annoying problem with my newly install Win7 pro, sp1.
The Start Menu Search doesn't work. All I get are 3 files that look like categories (Programs, Control Panel and Files).
The normal search , in file explorer, works though.
What I've tried so far:
I have enabled search in the Start Menu Settings. In Customize Start Menu I have enabled "Search with public folders" and "Search programs and Control Panel".
I have reset my search indexing several times. I have tried different registry tweaks suggested in forums like these like these:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/cc594db0-dbe8-4255-a259-5c1914318c3d/search-in-start-menu-stopped-working
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/windows-7-start-menu-search-not-working/1b0bf595-a246-4397-8d05-73e117f046fe?page=6
Non of these suggestions worked for me. I tried importing the registry keys below as suggested by some posts above:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}]
"CanonicalName"="StartMenu"
"Mode"=dword:00000001"
PerceivedType"=dword:00000000
"Theme"="default"
"MostRelevant"="prop:System.Author;System.Keywords"
"LayoutType"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}\TopViews]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}]
"Name"="NoName"
"Order"=dword:00000000
"GroupBy"="System.StartMenu.Group"
"PrimaryProperty"="System.StartMenu.Group"
"SortByList"="prop:-System.Search.Rank;-System.DateModified;System.ItemNameDisplay"
"LogicalViewMode"=dword:00000001
This also didn't do anything.
I can't find anything else online that addresses this problem. Now I'm getting a little desperate. I'm no novice when it comes to Windows. I have spoken to seasoned Windows tech support people (not from MS). None of them nor I have ever seen this problem
before. There is very not much help online. Can anybody please help pointing me in the right direction.
CheersHi,
Anything recorded in the event log? You can check the event viewer.
Regarding to the index option you mentioned, verify that the Start Menu is in the list of indexing option, then check the selected location under indexed location of start menu
If possible, I suggest you create a new user account, then copy the old files to the new user profile, please refer to this link

My browser was very slow, so I cleared cookies and cache. When FF (4.0) restarted, it said it had installed colourful tabs (which I ALREADY HAD). I opened FF and typed in mmy first TE on my list ( I surf traffic exchanges). But I cannot do so on FF anymore. Only half my computer screen is from the TE or web page, and the bottom HALF of the screen is for History, etc. I cannot even see or access the Start menu or my open tabs at the bottom of the screen, unless I use Control and Escape.
I got the url from FF 4.0 , uninstalled the old version and reinstalled it. Same thing. I uninstalled it again, straight from my control panel (Windows Vista Home Premium), cleared cookies and cache again, fixed registry problems again, and restarted my computer. STILL same thing!
I tried to adjust settings, but it will not let me change what I need to. I cannot unclick that updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, and check that I want to be asked each time. I do not know if I can even SEE what was updated, to give you an idea if that could have caused this very nasty problem. Nasty, because until it is fixed, I will not be using FF.After following all the instructions given, I poked around safe websites as suggested. I am not sure why this step was needed, as websites functioned rather normally before I came here but I did it anyways and found that the websites still work the same as they did. I can still do everything I used to be able to do. I see no change in the function of the websites.
However, I still cannot resize, close, or move the browser window. I don't know if Netflix is a safe site or not (too many conflicting opinions on that one from the masses) so I don't know if the issue with the vanishing buttons is still there, but all the issues I had with the browser window itself is still there.
Even in safe mode the browsers three window control buttons on the top right refuse to let me use them and the window itself will refuse to be moved around. -
This started a couple weeks ago, but doesn't seem to coincide with any other installations or reconfigurations, so I'm having trouble getting at the root cause.
The first time I run Firefox after installing, it runs fine (complete with a full list of add-ons.) If I then close FF and try to start it from the task bar or start menu, nothing happens. I've tried starting in safe mode (shift+FF), but get the same result. I've restored FF to all the default settings, disabled all my plugins and add ons, but no change.
The really odd part is that if I click the 'Inbox' link in my Windows Live Messenger, FF opens perfectly. This made me think that it was my homepage causing the issue, but A: I can go to that page without problems once FF has started from WLM, and B: even if I use the FF default homepage or google.com, I get the same problem. Furthermore, if I restart FF from within FF (like after I disable/enable an add-on), it will also start properly.
No crash report is generated by FF when it fails to load, but Windows catches the problem in it's event log. I've pasted the contents of that record at the bottom in the hopes that someone can take a stab at what's wrong.
Finally, I've already run through the online crash help, but everything is either not related (since FF will start if called indirectly) or has already been prevented (absolutely no add-ons are running at the moment.)

</Event>I have exactly the same issue. After FF upgraded on its own to version 5, it won't open from start menu, taskbar, desktop icon, or even by pressing firefox.exe in program files directory. It does so by pressing a link at msn messenger, inside Outlook etc.
Disabling all addons, didn't help. Moreover, I can't start FF in safe mode or start profile manager (Start > Run> firefox.exe -ProfileManager).

Hi Guys
when we install an Application in windows 8 family, we see that in addition of Application executable file, user manuals (.chm) and PDF & other files related to that App are added to start menu (when we click down Arrow which shows all programs) and
so the start menu gets quit messy.
is there any settings to make only applications executable file be added to start menu & prevent other types of files related to that App being added here?
thanks in advancedHi John,
This issue is related to the programs package we installed.
• An installation package contains all of the information that the Windows Installer requires to install or uninstall an application or product and to run the setup user interface.
• The developer can specify installation context, and based on these properties, Windows Installer automatically redirects the values of folder properties and registrations to locations.
• The shortcut is added to the profile by these context
We could right click these file and could find out they are the shortcut mentioned above.
For more information about Windows Installer, please refer to the following article.

thanks a lot -
Howdy,
I installed Windows 10 Technical Preview with original language settings for the US region.
No that I need my Windows localized to Espanol - Spanish.
I type "language' in Cortana, select Add language to this device and click Add a language on the Region & language.
Then I select added language and click Set as primary.
After the restart I see that while Windows Explorer is displayed in Spanish, Start menu is displayed in English (including app sections such as Explore Windows), as well as Modern apps that have retained their English names (such as Mail).
I even set the location to Spain in regional settings (although I didn't like the idea, as I want to browse the US market). To no avail.
How do I change the language of the Start menu and modern apps?
Thank you.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...Okay, I ran the in-place upgrade and it worked!
What I did:
1. Downloaded and attached Espanol edition of Windows Setup ISO.
2. Started setup.exe from that ISO.
TIP: If need be, you can downgrade your installation of Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview to Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview by changing two registry values, EditionID and ProductName. You may use the following registry file on Windows 10 Enterprise
Technical Preview:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"EditionID"="Professional"
"ProductName"="Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview"
Import these settings into registry and start setup wizard from the Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview setup CD. Voila! Windows will offer upgrade of your current setup of Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview to Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview with
saving all your settings and applications!
The only thing that wasn't localized are the new app sections. I still see Explore Windows and Everyday apps. Probably, these UI strings haven't yet been translated.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given... -
UEV 2.0 - Support for Windows 7 Start Menu & Taskbar
Hi all,
According to Microsoft, UEV 2.0 should now provide out of box support for the Start Menu & Taskbar:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/jj720570.aspx
"Roaming of additional operating system settings: We have added settings roaming for the Start Menu, Taskbar, folder options, and region and language"
I have enabled Desktop settings using GPO as I'm aware this is disabled by default.
I've found many articles which direct you to the UEV Gallery for downloading a custom XML template but I want to use the OOB support provided in UEV 2.0. However, I appear to be having some difficulty syncing the start menu & pinned taskbar icons
using UE-V 2.0 in Windows 7 (x64). Has anyone had any success in using this or can someone confirm that this feature is available in UEV 2.0?
Regards,
JimHi Felipe and Jim,
The best solution is to use Folder Redirection with UE-V. This then allows you to centrally locate the users %APPDATA% which contains the pinned icon files.
I also found a link the the same Startmenu.xml but you must remember to remove the ".lnk" extension from the registry key for the UE-V agent config.
All be it I have some issues where the TaskBar does not sync and then sometimes it does. Still working on this.
Thanks

Hi, even after installing KB3034229 my start menu is gone, search does not work so I don't have any good way to start applications. I am worried because they say update fixes this error, but not for me :-(
Most of my settings are also gone. I cannot revert back (getting error about moved account, but I did not move my account location after installing technical preview)
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!Actually, I decided to take a look around in the Event Viewer and saw that there were errors in the "Application" section under windows logs, with the message stating "Activation of app (Insert app name here with a bunch of characters after
it) failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information." And a more specific error to do with ShellExperienceHost.exe http://pastebin.com/c62Fm8xz
. (Cant figure out how to change the font back, so ill stick with this one) All the errors in the Application tab in windows logs that are "Application Errors" all come from the faulting module "Windows.UI.Xaml.dll" After trying to open
the start menu, an Application error (http://pastebin.com/WVktd0Ti) (Suddenly the font fixed itself, okay.) appeared. This is all on build 10041. The logs in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" all contain something along the lines of this
"Activation of the app Microsoft.Cortana_8wekyb3d8bbwe!CortanaUI for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The remote procedure call failed.."
Hopefully this contains useful information to help fix this bug.
EDIT:
After looking up the error code from the log in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2798317/) It seems to be a permissions issue maybe? I'll update this if I find a solution. -
All the icons in the desktop, taskbar and start menu are messed up
I installed Windows 7 5 days ago. Somehow all the icons in the desktop, the taskbar and the start menu have been replaced by a notepad icon. Additonally, When I click the Start button, the captions for the different icons are like "calculator.lnk", "snipping tool.lnk", etc. If I click on any of these options in the menu, instead of opening the application, it opens notepad. As if notepad had become the default application for all the links.
Why did this happen, and how can I work around it? Looks like this is a nice bug to fix in SP1.Hi SnowflakeCoder,
According to your problem description, it seems that the icon cache and the file associations are damaged.
I suggest we perform the following troubleshooting suggestions to check the issue.
Suggestion 1: Rebuild icon cache
=========================
1. Click “Start” and open “Computer”.
2. Click “Organize” on the Tool bar, and choose “Folder and Search Options”.
3. Then click the “View” tab, check to select the “Show hidden files and folders option”, and click “OK”.
4. After that, enter the following directory and press Enter.
%userprofile%\AppData\local
5. Find the “IconCache.db” file, and rename it as “IconCache.db.old”.
6. Close the window, and restart the computer.
Suggestion 2: Restore the Start Menu via previous versions
=========================
1. Click “Start” and open “Computer”.
2. Enter the following directory and press Enter.
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
3. Right-click the “Programs” folder, and then click “Restore Previous Versions”.
4. You'll see a list of available previous versions of the folder.
5. Select a previous version of the file or folder you would to restore, click “Restore” button.
6. Please click “Restore” if the window titled Previous Versions prompts.
7. Please click “OK” when the file or the folder has been successfully restored to the previous version.
8. Click “OK” again.
If both suggestions cannot fix the issue, you may also try the System Restore which should be the easiest way to fix this issue.
Suggestion 3: Run System Restore
=========================
1. Click “Start”, type “System Restore” (without quotation marks) in the Search bar, and then click “System Restore” in the “Programs” list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click “Continue”.
2. In the “System Restore” dialog box, click “Choose a different restore point”, and then click “Next”.
3. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click “Next”.
4. Click “Finish”.
The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.
Please check the result again. -
How to add shortcuts to user Start Menu and Taskbar using Microsoft Office 2013 OCT?
Hello, I am kindly seeking your help. How do I add the shortcuts for Word 2013, Excel 2013, and PowerPoint 2013 to the users Start Menu and taskbar when installing MS Office 2013 from a network installation point? I am using Office2013

When you try to change the shortcut locations for Office 2013 applications in the Office Customization Tool (OCT), you receive the following error message:
Invalid start in folder. Please try again.
Then, you add the Start in location for Office 2013 and run a customized installation. When you double-click the shortcuts that are displayed on the desktop, Configure shortcuts does
not work and you receive the following error message:
Sorry, we couldn’t find your file. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?
To work around this issue, type a single open bracket ([) in the Start in
field.
In addition, refer to the link below on "Configure shortcuts" in OCT:

I followed these directions -- Select the Start Menu in the Windows Taskbar. 2. In the Search box, enter the following: %APPDATA% 3. Press Enter. 4. From the Application Data folder, navigate to Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. 5. Delete the file xpicleanup.dat. 6. Restart Firefox. --- but I could not find Mozilla Firefox under 'Program Files'.
