Preview.app will not display some PDF files

Since upgrading Yosemite I have found that Preview.app will not display some PDF documents, the documents open but all the pages are blank. This is a big issue as my work involves reviewing documents that are all in the PDF format. Strangely some PDFs work properly but I haven't been able to determine any common factors among the documents that work versus those that don't work. The problem documents do open correctly in Adobe Acrobat Reader but Reader takes over viewing of PDF container fields I have in several important FileMaker Pro 13 databases. Acrobat in the FileMaker databases for me is just as much of a problem as not viewing PDFs in Preview.
After searching the forums I followed suggestion in a post to try using version 7.0 of Preview.app (the version that worked under Mavericks) but that is also showing blank pages. I have noticed that the PDFs which open as blank pages also display that way in Finder and Spotlight previews. Could this mean that I have some kind of OS level issue here and not a Preview.app issue? Perhaps Finder and Spotlight use Preview.app to generate the preview.
I have posted this in a bug report to Apple but in the meantime I would welcome any suggestions or workarounds to try.

The built-in PDF renderer has trouble with that file. You might get better results with Adobe Reader.

  • Preview 8.0 will not display some pdfs.

    I review documents that are available as PDF files from my local government. Preview 8.0 (Yosemite 10.10) can not display pdf documents created by the Registry of Deeds (Land Titles) since approximately 2005. As well the Finder previews and icons show all blank pages. The PDF files contain the correct number of pages, they are just totally blank.
    I installed Acrobat Reader (version 11.0.09) so I can continue to work, it displays all the documents correctly, but this is the first time in years that I have needed Reader on my Mac. The troublesome files appear as Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) and Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.7), The documents I need to review might be TIFF or JPEG files that are made available as a PDF, I am waiting for their support department to tell me what format is used for the documents on the server.
    Does Preview 8.0 only display something newer that Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)?

    Wunderboy,
    Have you heard back from Apple yet?  Has it been escalated to Engineering?
    I have only recently noticed this problem when trying to look at some bank statements which were downloaded.  There is a background that is is fine but like you the other data shows in the Thumbnails and briefly in the preview when the Thumbnail is clicked.
    Interestingly if I:
    a)     Export as a .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
    b)     Export... but then choose .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
    c)     Export... but then choose .jpg all is ok.
    b)     If I File / Print but save as a .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
    c)     Finally if I File / Print to a printer all is ok
    So a workaround is to Export .jpg and then Export that (.jpg) file back to .pdf.  Sounds like a an Automator script would help!

    Simon

  • TS1702 My iPhone 4s will not display any pdf file in any of several apps. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

    I have tried several apps including Adobe Reader, PDFReader Lite and iBooks to open PDF files. No files I sync to the 4S are even displayed, much less opened. I'd like to hear from anyone who has been able to overcome a similar problem.

    OK, glad that worked!
    How about trying this as step 2:
    When you open the PDF attachment in Mail that you can read, click the action (right arrow) button near the top right of your screen.  One of the options there should be "Open in iBooks".  Does that work for you?  It should!

  • FireFox 33.1 will not display the PDF file from Bank online site after 33.1

    I asked this question in an unrelated support ticket so I want to give more detail here. I have tried uninstalling Adobe reader and reinstalling it and it did not help. This was working before with all the exact same addins I had before. I called the Bank and asked if they had any problems and they say no. I can go to the Firefox PDF display for this file and click on download the PDF then double click it in Windows explorer and Adobe reader comes up and displays the file just fine. Don't mind doing that for now. What happens is the bank loads the file then Adobe reader displays with a white screen and a little circle going round and round, like a video is trying to play, and it just sits there forever. I never see the file contents. Anyway I hope your have a good of a day as I am and I know it get better. Thanks Firefox programmers for such a wonderful program.
    Update: While I was writing this I remembered to go into Firefox options, then Applications, and wouldn't you know it, a PDF document was set to "Preview in Firefox". I changed that to Adobe reader and now it works just fine. Guess there's something wrong with the Preview code in Firefox. So I'm happy now. Hope this helps someone.

    Yes, the built-in PDF viewer is a work in progress. Glad you found a workaround, or got back to your preferred configuration, depending on how you look at it.

  • Preview app: painfully slow with some .pdf files

    I have consistently had troubles opening pdf files generated from spectrometers in my research lab. The files load slowly and Preview typically freezes to the point that it is not very useful.
    These files are .pdf and not large (100kb in size). My computer is fast otherwise. I've attached a dropbox link if anyone is interested in trying to open on their computer: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b9se3ihe0izvzq1/19F%20NMR.pdf
    Any ideas why I would be having this problem? Any feedback would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Chris
    As a side note I copy and paste these pdf files to insert into Keynote and face similar slow loading (sometimes my powerpoint freezes mid presentation.)

    The built-in PDF renderer has trouble with that file. You might get better results with Adobe Reader.

  • IPhone not displaying some PDF files in Mail

    We have a reporting server that generates PDF files sent by email. When I receive these files using Apple Mail on my Macbook or iMac, they are displayed without problems. However, when reading them in my email on the iPhone, the indicator just keeps spinning showing 'Loading...' but never shows the file.
    If I go to my Apple Mail app on the laptop or desktop, forward the file to myself, then go back to the iPhone, the PDF shows fine.
    Is Apple Mail on the iPhone interpreting less MIME types or something than the desktop version? This is annoying since it is about the only thing that the iPhone doesn't do well for me to complete my business integration. Something so simple.

    Sounds like a bug. Let Apple know.

  • How do i Restore Preview as my default viewer when using Safari,seems adobe has hi jacked Safari,if i uninstall adobe safari will not open any pdf files.

    How do i restore Preview as my default viewer.
    Seems adobe has hi-jacked Safari and and opens using abobe not preview.
    Have uninstalled adobe but safari then will not display any pdf files.
    Preview still works fine to view existing downloaded files.

    Niac --
    What kind of files?  PDFs?  or Others as well?
    If you want Preview to open all PDFs, then find a PDF on your HD.
    Highlight it, and then press the Apple/Comand key along with th letter " i " key.
    When the window comes up, look down to the "Open with" line, and change it from Adobe to Preview.
    Then look slightly below, and select "Change All."
    Now, all PDFs should open with Preview.

  • Adobe Reader Will Not Display Large PDFs

    When using the Adobe Reader app on PlayBook it will not display some PDFs. It seems that it will not display PDFs that are too large.
    Some files that might be too large do not display while smaller files do display in the app. The too large range could be in the 12 MB region where the good range could be 6 MB or less.
    I tried to submit feedback to BlackBerry on this issue but it returned my email saying it could not process my request. I am hoping that they read it here.
    Here is a link to a page with both readable and unreadable files:
    http://www.bossus.com/backstage/product_manuals/?group=2
    A readable PDF is the owner's manual for the RV-3. A unreadable PDF is the owner's manual for the RC-3.

    That looks like a perfectly good PDF, but since it's trying to open in Microsoft Word, that means your file association for .pdf files is incorrect.  You should change it to point to Adobe Reader instead of Word.

  • Air App will not read local text file using openAsync/readUTFBytes on user (non-admin) mode

    I am running an Air App I did for the desktop, from the actual installed executable already deployed in the machine (Not from Flash Pro / Flex dev. environment). For some reason the app will not read a text file stored in the same application folder unless I run my app as administrator from the OS.
    When I run the app as admin, or within the development environment it works fine. Maybe this is related to some security issue? I read the adobe air documentation, and this should work...
    I am using openAsync/readUTFBytes on user as shown here:
    var continueGamesConnection:FileStream();
    var continueFile:File = new File(File.applicationDirectory.resolvePath("continueGames.txt").nativePath.toString());
    continueGamesConnection.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, openSavedGames);
    continueGamesConnection.openAsync(continueFile, FileMode.UPDATE);
    function openSavedGames(event:Event):void
         continueGamesConnection.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, openSavedGames);
         var content:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
         var loadedContent:String = new String();
         loadedContent = continueGamesConnection.readUTFBytes(continueGamesConnection.bytesAvailable);
         content.decode(loadedContent);
         variableX = content. variableX
         //etc, etc.
         continueGamesConnection.close();
    By the way, I have also, tried using FileMode.READ, and others, and it still gives me the same problem. Only works if ran on admin mode or from the dev. environment.
    It's very frustrating, I tried reading other posts without any luck... What solutions do people use for this kind of problem?
    I have seen that you can set the app to run as admin somehow, and I guess that could work. However, this should work just fine, since it doesn't seem to violate any of the security APIs of Air. Seems like an overkill. But even so, how do I do that?
    You help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks kglad.com. I will try this and see if it works. Can you check my code a bit to see if it's right?
    var continueFile:File = new File(File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("savedgames/continueGames.txt").nativePath.toString());
    Does this look right to work across all desktop OS?

    Hello,
    In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
    #Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
    #In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
    #In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
    #On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
    Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Firefox will not print a pdf file

    I have Firefox 9.0 and it will not print a pdf file using the print icon but will print using Ctr+p. It will print in internet explorer. What do I need to do ?

    Which "print" icon - the one on a Firefox toolbar or the one in the PDF window?
    If you are using Adobe Reader to display PDF file, the newer version of Adobe hides the Reader toolbar by default - hit F8 to show the toolbar, the print icon should be on the Adobe toolbar.
