Preview can't be opened -10810

I'm running 10.9.2 on a MacBook Pro and suddenly I'm unable to launch Preview and I'm getting error code -10810.  I can run into a Genius bar but if anyone has some suggestions for solving the issue it would save me a trip and the genius an extra visitor.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well Duh.  After 30 yrs on computers that should always be the first thing I try.
It worked.  Thanks for the help!

  • The appliCATION PREVIEW CAN'T BE OPENED -10810

When I try to "preview" a file, I am getting an error message that says "The Application 'Preview' can't be opened -10810
    How can I fix this?

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • I plugged in a USB drive, tried to open Finder, got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810, went into terminal.app, messed up, now terminal screen blank.  how do i regain terminal in order to fix finder problem?

With my iMac running, I plugged in a USB drive.  When I clicked on finder, I got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810.  I removed the USB drive.  I messed up while in Terminal.app trying to fix Finder problem.  Now my terminal screen is blank, just the cursor, but no action after typing a command & clicking enter.  Help!

I finally figured out a way to Restart (normal way wasn't working...) & that Restart DID FIX both the Terminal problem AND the Finder problem.  So easy, yet so elusive.  Thanks so much.

  • Time machine problem? The application Finder.app can't be opened -10810

I've got a Snow Leopard system with an external FireWire Maxtor drive that has been set to be a Time Machine archive of the internal drive. I'm noticing the following problem (twice so far) which may or may not be TM related. I leave my machine and come in the morning; Time Machine says no backup happened since 7:45pm last night. I notice the file system is acting weird - can't open any of the disks from the desktop. I try to restart the Finder, and it says "The application Finder.app can't be opened -10810" - won't start the Finder! So, I had to reboot (and disconnected the FW drive). I'll try it for a couple of nights without the TM machine and see what happens. The reason I suspect TM is that sometimes I see the icon on the TM disk change from the blue/gray TM icon back to its native FW disk icon, and sometimes I see a message that says "Can't find disk" or something similar for that external drive.
Any ideas? Should I be looking for an external drive from another vendor, or will it be the same thing? Does TM have problems associated with Finder and error -10810? How do I debug?

No, I tried different drives, and it made no difference.
In the end I turned it off, and did backups with SuperDuper!.
funny you should mention SuperDuper. When you had this problem, did you have SuperDuper scheduled to back up other drives? I have a theory, which I'll test eventally. For some reason, this TM problem only happened at night - not all the times it activated (every hour) during the workday. Why?!? Well, one thing that happens at night for me is a scheduled SuperDuper backup of the same drive (the one TM is backing up) onto a mirror drive (not the one TM is writing to).
Maybe that's when the freeze occurs - when they both coincide at night? I'd think that the Unix-base of OS X shouldn't have any problems when two apps are reading one disk and at the same time, but maybe TM and SuperDuper are both doing some sort of low-level reads that can't be done at the same time? What do you think - might this explain your issues also?

  • MacBook Pro The application "Preview" can't be opened. -1712

    Hello community,
    My MacBook Pro
    Processor 2.4 GHz
    Memory 4 GB
Storage capacity 19.31 GB free out of 249.2 GB
    OS X.9.4
The application "Preview" can't be opened. -1712
I have gone on line to look up possible fixes.
    1. I did: Go to Applications: Utilities: Disk Utility and ran: Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions. Both fine.
    2. I did: Finder: Go: Library: Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist and deleted that file. I tried to relaunch preview and it is still not working.

Try deleting the com.apple.preview folder from the Containers folder in your /Home/Library.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Hi,  I cannot access Finder and get the following message. Can anybody help? The application Finder can't be opened -10810

    Hi,
In the last couple of days I have found that I can't shut down. When trying to open Finder I get the following message... The application Finder can't be opened - 10810.
Everything else seems to be OK. However I do have to sign in to Google Mail every time, where in the past it opened up automatically.  I am a really novice at fixing problems, so any help would be great.

The application Finder can't be opened -10810
"A number of people are having a problem where the Finder will hang or crash, followed by a Finder error message saying "The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810." The general agreement among affected users seems to be that this is spurred mainly when accessing external drives, but there could be a few other related reasons."

  • Preview can no longer open eps files

I'm having difficulty getting Preview to convert eps to pdf, even for eps files that it handled fine 4 months ago. I get a "File error. Couldn't open the file." I assume this must be due to a recent update but I haven't been able to find any mention of this problem online. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Yes, a [third party font management application|http://www.extensis.com/en/products/suitcasefusion2/index.jsp].
I don't have any experience with using eps so I can't come up with detailed suggestions. Maybe somebody else has more experience with how it all works. I can only make general troubleshooting suggestions. You can try starting in Safe Mode and see if that lets you do what you want (and thereby implicating some third party add-on). You can then try starting back in normal mode and see if that has restored things or the problem recurs.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.

  • MBP Late 2007 Snow Leopard 10.6.8 finder randomly (but now always!) crashing current app still works, but can't change apps dialog: "application Finder can't be opened -10810". Any ideas?

Keyboard won't  work after waking from sleep.  Finder not working.  When I hard restart, it works for a little while, but then the finder drops out on its own accord.  The current app will still function nearly normally, but can't change apps.  Can't quit any apps.  Force Quit shows no apps?
All this has started in the last few days.  Fine (if a little slow, too long on beach balls, but nothing like the one minute rolls I'm reading about ...) up until then.  Only new update was last iTunes update! and I haven't opened iTunes?
    any ideas?

  • Error "The application Finder can't be opened -10810"

    Hi there,
I do not know what's going on at the office this week but our MacBook Pro gives this error when you turn it on. I cannot open the Finder and when I try to restart get stuck and nothing happens, so I force it on the power button. Although I was able to open a folder on the desktop.
I have tried this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4315534?start=0&tstart=0 but did not work.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Hi,
try: "/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder &" in Terminal to start the Finder manually.

  • Application "Preview" can't be opened. -1712

    Any suggestions?

Thank you for the suggestion - I've removed those anyway.
However, it looks as if the problem was connected to memory pressure. Preview is now working fine, but it's because I've got rid of unnecessary applications.
I had 16Gb of memory filled with applications, and I think that's why preview failed. It was mainly Safari tabs.
