Preview - PDF files?

Okay soo confused here. I cannot find where to post this topic.
I have an online class, and that class comes with an online textbook that is opened with the application Preview automatically.
I want to search for a specific topic, so I enter it in the search bar and it comes up with "no results found" which is nonsense. I know it's in the book, I have tried it while i can SEE the exact phrase i'm searching.
for the life of me i cannot get it to work. if i search for just one or two letters, that's fine, it shows all the pages those two letters show up on. but if i type in a word it will only search on the first page. there is 600 pages, I need it to search more than the first page!
please help, it will make my life soo much easier. How do I search more than just the first page on a PDF document?

Single word search. If it is a phrase or string of words +"enclose with quotes."+
They are many types of encoding for PDF's. Depending on the source that generated the PDF, they may not be all that compatible with Preview for search/select/copy and paste purposes.
If that is the case try an alternative as bdmarsha suggest above.
You can control-click on the document and "open with" something that may work better for you. Or extract and save the PDF as RichText and search that. Sometimes you have to get creative. I always say desperation is the mother of invention.
Command-i-click on the pdf will open the information box, there you might see what generated the PDF, this maybe a start.

  • Preview PDF file in SAP

    Dear All,
I know how to creat PDF file in smartform but I want to preview PDF file in SAP instead of downloading on local drive so How can i do this?
    Regards,

Not quite sure what you mean by preview (the actual PDF or the smartform you created?), but here is a FM for displaying a PDF from where you can download file to local drive.

  • Preview pdf files in the desktop with Adobe Reader Touch .. is it possible?

preview pdf files in the desktop with Adobe Reader Touch
    .. is it possible?

Windows Store apps (including Adobe Reader Touch) do not offer the preview capability in the desktop environment.  That's just how Microsoft has set up.  So you need traditional desktop apps.
Because your operating system is Windows 8 (not Windows RT), you can find a lot of desktop apps that are compatible with Windows 7 and 8.  (For Windows RT, only built-in Microsoft Office products are available for desktop apps.  But that's not the case here.)
You can download Adobe Reader XI (which is also a free PDF viewer) from the following Adobe Reader download page
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
and install it on your Windows 8 desktop.  (Note for Windows RT users: Adobe Reader XI is not compatible with Windows RT.)
In case you have any questions about Adobe Reader XI (desktop app), you can visit the Adobe Reader forum.

  • Previewing pdf files in Windows 8

I have a new Samsung Ulimate laptop with Windows 8- Nice machine but not fit for purpose as I cannot preview pdf files in Windows Explorer- every file just has the pdf icon with no preview and only the filename to differentiate them. Is this a known problem. Is there a reliable fix?

Not for 64 bit systems, it doesn't seem it was ever expected to work.

  • Cannot preview PDF files in MS Word

After downloading Adobe XI I cannot preview PDF files from MS Word file list

Word cannot and will not open or preview PDFs because a PDF IS NOT a word document or text document.
If you try File>Open and choose a PDF you will see a page full of Unicode which makes up the PDF. That I guarantee will be completely useless to you.
PDFs open in Reader and Acrobat (or Foxit - but that's not an Adobe product)

  • Search in saved preview .pdf files not working any more

When I download a .pdf file from the internet and open it in preview, the search command works ok. When this same file is saved to disk and opened again, search is not working any more. Is this a bug, or my fault. Regards Rolf

    Hi,
    I hope this helps...
A while back we have more than one browser running on our PC (IE, Firefox, Chrome) and we messed by how Acrobat views documents over the web.
I think that this has some relevance here, as around this time LC also started falling over previewing forms.
Now if we open LC and Acrobat is not running, the "Preview PDF" is not present or accessible. So now we fire up Acrobat before we open a form in LC Designer and the preview tab is there and functioning.
Not much of a workaround; but I am hoping that someone will have a better one!!!
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Preview pdf files in Safari before potentially save them

In fact I have 2 questions:
when I do a web search if I click on a link to a pdf file, 2 things can randomly happen :
1 The pdf opens in a safari window and I can directly read it (that's what I want)
2  The pdf file is directly downloaded to my hard drive (and I may have to trash it if it turns out not to be as interesting as I thought)
My first question is: is there a way to always have the option 1 and never the second one?
Second question : Once (if) the pdf opens in a safari window, is there a way to DIRECTLY save it where I want? So far, the only way to do it I could find is from the safari pdf window, save the file to the "downloaded items" folder and then move it to the folder of interest. I can also from the safari pdf window open the file in preview and save the preview pdf document where I want.
In any case my 2 solutions appear complicated to me: is there a way to do that in a single step?

OK your command S option is working. I had tried Ctlr click instead (like I used to do in previous OS versions, and this was not bringing any "save option in the pop-up menu).
For the first question, here is an example of a web adress linking to a pdf file that directly downloads on my hard drive.

  • Preview PDF files drop letters when printed.

I have a problem with PDF's printing without lower-case letter o's and upper-case X's. This is both to my Brother Laser Printer AND my HP C309.
It may be Mac software at a low level, because when I print a PDF to Yojimbo, the lower-case o's and upper-case X's are also missing. There may be others, but those are the two letters I noticed.
The screen displays are OK and PDF's generated to Yojimbo from Safari are OK.
The same downloaded PDF file that dropped the o's and X's print OK when opened with Acrobat Reader.
Is this a Preview problem? I'm running Preview Version 5.0.3 (504.1).

Thanks for the pointers. I did find some duplicates with Font Book and deleted them. I don't have any duplicates between the System and User fonts and have not installed Office X. I do have Office 98 installed under Fusion.
As I mentioned, the PDF files print fine with Acrobat Reader. This is a very recent error. I have a long list of PDF files saved to Yojimbo and none have any dropped letters until yesterday.
    Thanks for any further suggestions.

  • Can't open or preview PDF files in outlook 2007

I recently did all the recommended security updates for Office 2007. Since then I can't open PDF files anymore in Outlook. When I double click a PDF attachment I get a 'Attachment security warning that the file may contain a virus' The only option is then to save the file on the hard disc and open it from there, which works, just a bit complicated.
Also the auto preview for PDF doesn't work anymore.

You are a gem now I can read my PDF's would have never picked that one :o)

  • Printing of Preview pdf Files

    September 7, 2006
When using Preview, pdf documents that have multiple pages, some being portrait and some being landscape there are four problems that I do not know how to work around, Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    1. Preview does not print the full page for the portrait pages when portrait is selected.
Q1. How can I prevent Preview from truncating a portion of the left side of the page?
    2. Preview does not print the full page for the landscape pages when landscape is selected.
Q2. How can I prevent Preview from truncating a small portion of the bottom of the page?
    3. Preview does not automatically select either portrait or landscape for a doucment that has both typtes of pages.
Q3. How can I configure Preview to automatically select the portrait or landscape mode as appropriate for each page?
    4. Adobe Reader has features that automatically take care of all three of these problems.
Q4. How can I configure Preview to do the same?
Q5. If this is impossible I will have to move back to Adobe Reader, but then I ask the question why Apple provides Preview at all?
Thanks for your help and guidance on this subject.

This has come up previously, and it's a limitation of the printing system that Preview can't handle documents with mixed orientation. The solution, until Apple addresses this, is to print out the different orientations as separate jobs. Going back to Acrobat is probably a better solution.

  • Windows 8 Outlook 2013 doesn't preview .pdf files

    What's the trick?

    Well Said !!!
All pdf attachments can be previewed inside MS Outlook by installing same plug-in. By using Adobe Reader, all pdf attachments can be previewed separately (i.e. downloading). However the need is call to export outlook emails to pdf with attachments, you can go through an automated app. A standalone application that I used does not require MS Outlook and Adobe Acrobat any more to export Outlook emails to pdf with attachments.

  • Stuck .pdf file on desktop

I have a Preview .pdf file on my desktop that is stuck. I can't move it, I can't delete it. When I try to put it in the trash I get a message saying that it "can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted." I can click on the file and select it, but from the Finder I can "get info" or perform any other action. I can open the file from the Preview App but can't change it's name.
Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be?

Many thanks, why I didn't think of that I'll never know.
