Preview won't convert postscript - PDF anymore

I make a Postscript file in emacs (using `ps-spool-buffer-with-faces'). I save it, append the `.ps', and double-click. Preview then SAYS it is converting it. What I see is a list of EMPTY WHITE pages. The document is the proper length, just all blank. Does it contain white text? Well, if you enter a word in the search field, it says it's not found. So probably not.
But this same Postscript document is properly converted using, e.g., ps2pdf.
Can anyone explain this?

Acrobat 8 is not Win 7 compatible. Especially Win7 64 bit. I don't think think Acrobat X supports MS Office 2003. You should be able to print to pdf, it is just that the conversion from within the 2003 toolbar will not work, which means you will lose a lot of special functionality.

  • Preview won't open some PDF's

Recently on my MacBook Air running Mountain Lion, Preview will not open some PDF's.  Other PDF's it opens just fine.
Those PDF's that will not open in Preview display the following Adobe message in the Preview window:
    Is this a glitch?
I can "Control/Click" them and "Open With" Adobe Reader. The only common factor I can see among the PDF's that won't open in Preview is it seems these particular PDF's are usually quite lengthy and have a selectable Table of Contents associted with them.
Are some particular PDF formats permenently unavailable in Preview??
    Thank you.

    Thank you Allan and Barney.
Alas, though this did solve my question - it did not solve my problem.
I begrudgingly set-up the Adobe Reader account and downloaded the App.
Between: Apple's iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox, Amazon Cloud, and now Adobe Cloud, management of storage and documents is getting "complex" to say the least.
I was hoping to keep all these "collection-type PDF's" with all my other "normal-type PDF's" on Apple's iCloud through Preview.
Oh well, another account opened and another: account, username, password, and Application to manage.
Thank you both for your help and clarity on this issue.

Preview opens jpg's fine, but won't open a pdf.

You can try deleting the .plist. Quit Preview first.

  • I just purchased Adobe ExportPDF Annual & it won't convert a pdf file to a word docx file?

Yesterday I purchased & had my Adobe ExportPDF Annual account set up & working.  However I cannot convert a pdf file to a word file.  My pdf files are 774KB & 810 KB and my browser is Microsoft Outlook.  I keep getting the same error message " An error occurred while trying to access service".  All other internet activities & email are working.  WHAT NOW?

I can see Adobe really pays attention to this forum.

  • Preview won't print some PDF's

Periodically, Preview will not print some PDF files. I open them, print them, it appears to go to the printer, yet nothing happens. Both with HP laserjets and a brother USB multifunction.
Yet if I use Adobe Acrobat on the same file it prints fine. ANyone know what might cause this?
    Thanks.

Is there anything in Concole or the CUPS log (/var/log/cups/error_log)? It could be a font problem, but one of the places above should have some indication.
    Hope this helps.

  • Preview won't display certain pdf files

    I have Preview 3.0.9 (409) on Mac OS 10.4.11.
I have never had any problems opening pdf files with Preview before, but I have come accross a couple recently that wouldn't work. One opened with just a blank white page while another said: File error. Couldn't open the file.
I tried both pdf files on my iBook with the same problems. However, I then tried them on my new ipod touch and both worked fine (with text and graphics as you'd expect, nothing out of the ordinary).
These are reputable business files so there is no reason why they shouldn't work.
Why won't they open on Preview in OS X?
    How can I open them??
    Many thanks for all replies.

Certain parts of OS X including Mail and Preview are not upgradeable.
To extend the useful life of Tiger 10.4 and open modern PDF files, you may be interested in downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.4.0, then downloading and installing the current update to 9.5.0 which was released January 10, 2012. If you need Intel versions instead click here for 9.4.0 and then update with the Intel 9.5.0 update.
The 9.5.0 update is only incremental and you MUST install the 9.4.0 version before you can update to 9.5.0! In the future Adobe Updater will automatically notify you of further updates that may become available. However, keep in mind that support will eventually drop for this 7-year-old platform.

  • ExportPDF won't convert my PDF

"export wegen Sicherheitseinstellungen nicht möglich" was muss ich wo ändern?

    Hi alpu,
It sounds as though the PDF file that you're trying to convert has been password protected. Without removing that password (which requires Acrobat, and knowing the password), you won't be able to convert the file via ExportPDF.
Please let us know if you have additional questions.

  • Preview won't show some PDF fonts?

It's happened again:  I have downloaded a PDF that opens with most of the text missing/blank in Preview.  Opening the same document in Adobe Reader works fine.  If I copy/paste some of that font from either the Preview or the Reader version of the text (I can highlight the blank text, seeing only a colored bar for the selection), and it pastes just fine into Word or Pages, which tell me that the text is Calibri.
So....Preview is somehow not able to access/display that font, but the font is clearly installed on my computer, accessible to Reader, Word, Pages, etc.  I have resolved duplicate fonts in Font Book (and Calibri was not one of those that showed a conflict).
Any idea where the problem is?  It's not a critical problem at this time, because there's a way around it, but this has happened several other times when I want to quickly download a document to check something during the course of a meeting and don't have time to get distracted with multiple PDF readers--and I prefer the interface on Preview and want to keep that as my default.

    Thank you Allan and Barney.

  • Preview won't view/print PDF's correctly.

I have used InDesign to create some brochures, but when I export the files as a PDF and try to view it in Preview, the program screws up the artwork. If I use a gradient or a transparant gradient, Preview wants to make it one solid colored object with no gradient at all. When I change my export settings in InDesign, Preview decides to put boxes around all of my text boxes while giving me transparancy. If I try to save the file as a JPEG or a TIFF, preview wants to wash out my colors and leave everything looking dull.
I have tried every setting I know of to resolve this, all to no avail. Are there any color settings/options in preview that will actually make the program display things properly?
    Thank you.

    Thank you Allan and Barney.

  • Preview won't print some PDF files

Hi everyone, I know a similar problem has been already discussed but it was not solved.
When I print some PDF files from Preview on a Lexmark C524 color laser printer, I get only figures and symbols but no text. If I print the same files on a HP 2100 it prints ok.
I thought it was the printer driver, but then I tried the same using Adobe Reader 9.1 and it prints fine on all printers. So my guess is that it might be some PDF version compatibility issue with Preview.
    Any idea anybody?
You can find one of the PDF giving problems at the following address: http://www.pnas.org/content/106/1/97.full.pdf

  • Docs won't convert to .pdf

WIN XP Home; WordPerfect Office 12; Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard; HP Deskjet 722C - do all my doc work in WP12; have been able to convert docs to .pdf with no problems (Print, choose Adobe printer, go); today, however, for whtever reason when attempting to do such conversion from any doc in WP12, Acrobat is snitty and tells me that there is a problem with the doc(s); attempting to convert from within Acrobat results in the same.  So, anyone able to tell me which gremlin(s) I need to kill to get this to work correctly again?  Have already uninstalled/reinstalled Acrobat; didn't change anything.  Any help much appreciated.  Thanks

The log info is typically only 10 lines or so. If so, post it here as there are some folks who are pretty good at reading them. Sometimes I can catch the jist. Often the problem is a font that is not found or is not allowed for embedding. If that is the case, you can try to disable the button on the font menu of the Job Settings that causes the job to fail if the font issue comes up. The font would be wrong in the resultant PDF, but the file would be created. It might be something to check.
You really do not have to do the extra step of printing to file, but generally the log file is written in the folder where the PDF was to do if conversion fails and you can open it separately.

  • Preview won't open JPEG's anymore after Leopard upgrade

Has anyone else had this problem? Now Leopard's Preview program will only open very few of my picture files. Cover-view has the same issue. Example: Pictures taken from my phone downloaded to my hard drive. Double-click on them to open, and all I get is a line in Preview... no picture. The pictures will open in Quicktime, however, but isn't Preview made to view pictures?? Why use Quicktime for that?!?

I have a similar problem with JPEG's. Not all of mine show a thumbnail preview, but when I click on them the finder crashes. Also, they will not import into iPhoto 08. I thought somehow my files were corrupt but last night I reinstalled Tiger and the files work just fine. I have no idea why Leopard is not able to read them properly. When I installed Leopard it was a clean install. This time I am going to try an upgrade and see if it has the same issue. If it does I am going to get rid of Leopard until they get a fix for this. 90% of what I do on the mac is regarding photography and right now I am finding Leopard to be extremely useless.

  • Preview won't open PDFs

I have a brand new Macbook Air using OS X Mavericks and preview won't open any pdf's. It keeps saying "preview quit unexpectedly", it gives me the option of re-opening and still nothing. Not sure what to do - it's quite frustrating. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Just tried that - preview was already the default option, but I clicked it again anyway and clicked on another option and back to preview to try that too. Re-opened pdf and still same error....

  • Preview won't open eps, ps

I used to be able to double-click on an eps file, and Preview would say "Converting Postscript file to pdf" and it would open in a new Preview window. Now I always get the error message "File error. Couldn't open the file" after it starts the conversion process. This happens with any and all eps/ps files. If I click OK in the error dialog box, a blank pdf file opens (i.e., it is just a gray window). Any ideas? This used to work fine, and was extremely useful.

I spent about 4 hours on this. Here is what I found.
    1) This EPS opening issue if it existz causes problems in Preview, Mail, and even ColorSync when trying to open EPS file.
    2) The same machine can have problems in one user account, but be fine in another.
    3) Creating a new account usually creates an account that will open EPS files fine. (see strange notes below)
    4) Even when you copy all the contents of the old home folder were the EPS files were not working into the the new home folder, eps files will still open fine. (You can do this by copying the old home folder to the root fo the drive. Log off. Go to the new account and change the permissions on all the files to map to the new account as owner. Delete the content of the current home folder. Copy these into the new home folder. Log off and back on.)
BUT HERE IS WHERE IT GETS VERY VERY VERY STRANGE. I copied by entire problematic home folder to a BACKUP drive. Then I logged off and logged in as a different admin. I deleted the problematic account - erasing the entire contents of the account. Then I restarted. If I created an account with a NEW name and short name, then EPS files worked. BUT IF I CREATED A CLEAN BRAND NEW ACCOUNT WITH THE SAME NAME AS THE ACCOUNT THAT DID NOT WORK BEFORE - IT WOULD NOT WORK AGAIN. This is a brand new clean account, that just happens to have the same name as the account that did not work before. Again, the home folder is CLEAN. But when I tried to open EPS on this account, they would hang. I could create another account with different name, and EPS would open fine.
So this makes no sense to me. Something in the OS is different based on account OUTSIDE of the home folder.
So anyway, if you are having this problem here is the SOLUTION:
    1) Create a new user account with a different name and short name.
    2) Copy the contents of your current home folder to this new account. (following the steps above.)
    3) Use the new account.
This seems crazy, but it seems to work. Let me know if you have this issue too.

  • My Trade Gothic LT STD font doesn't convert to PDF. Other fonts convert but not this one.

This is issue came up when i upgraded to quickbooks 2012 from 2009. I always converted invoices to PDF without problem. But now my data fields using a font that i purhcased won't appear in PDF format. i can change the font of the data fields to Times New Roman and it will appear, but not with Trade Gothic LT STD. The font apperas in the font properties of the PDF file and it says it is embedded subset. This font works in all other windows and microsoft programs and even appears in the print preview. But it dissappears once i convert to PDF.

understand that this may not be the right forum. I've tried many other avenues seeking an answer so i figured i should try this one. I'm using Quickbooks to create invoices. The font shows up in Quickbooks in the print preview but once converted to PDF, the font dissapears. This problem began when i upgraded from 2009 to the 2012 version. The old version used Quickbooks PDF converter for the conversion; the new version uses Microsoft XPS document writer for the conversion (as i understand). I can change the font in quickbooks to TIMES NEW ROMAN, and it will appear. So i think its something with the converter or the font itself. Already tried quickbooks PDF utility, removing/reinstalling XPS writer, some other Intuit suggestions but nothing. I attemted to delete the font and reinstall but it wouldn't let me delete. Desperate for a resolution.
