Print Booklet fails to create PDF

Greetings all,
I've encountered a frustrating glitch in Print Booklet that doesn't seem to be mentioned in these forums or elsewhere on the web.
I regularly use Print Booklet to create imposed PDF files with the following workflow:
Click File > Print Booklet...
Click Print Settings...
Select Adobe PDF 9.0 Printer
Click Printer...
Check PDF settings, change as required
Click Print
Enter file name details
Click Save
Click OK in print settings dialogue box
Click Print in Print Booklet dialogue box
Wait for PDF to be created.
Most of the time this works fine but all of a sudden the PDF file has failed to be created. No error messages appear - nothing happens at all. The usual PDF progress bars appear in InDesign as it processes each page, but then nothing.
I've had this happen in another similar document but thought it was a corruption in the particular InDesign file and have just ignored it up until now.
The current document is a 24 page colour catalogue and contains many hi rez images. I wonder if the size of the document has exceeded some kind of memory requirement somewhere?
I've been able to use Print Booklet to create a PDF of the first 20 pages, or the last 20, but not the entire document.
The only difference in the document since it last worked correctly is that a few more images have been added and some more text, but no extra pages.
I'm using InDesign CS3 and Acrobat 9 Pro on a MacBook Pro with 4Gb RAM running Mac OS X 10.5.
Any suggestions much appreciated!

  • "Failed to create PDF" bug

I've wasted more than enough time chasing down this inexcusable bug (by which I mean the failure to report a reason for the PDF export failure, not necessarily the export failure itself, for which there may be a reason I could do something about, if I was told what it was). I've upgraded to the latest product version and explored all the avenues described on this forum and have found no consistent answer. I'll have to export subsets of my material and stitch them together externally to make a single PDF file. Acrobat aside, what is the best affordable utility for doing this, ie one which will preserve the Indesign output options as regards printer's marks etc when assembling a PDF from multiple parts?

It took a along time to talk my bosses into purchasing the CS6 update and the "failed to create PDF" feature is costing us a lot of money in lost productivity. We place all rasters in PS and then all PS in an Illustrator file (for process consistency and so our callouts are all the same size).  For us, the issue is related to images in the document.  I usually open the page (or the page after) where the image occurred and open the Illustrator file, open the PS file, change the image mode to 8-bits rather than 16, then go back to Illustrator and update the CS5 legacy file to a CS6 Illustrator file. A real pain when you have 600 page documents containing an almost equal number of graphics.
My bosses want to switch to an XML based information system.  This is not where I'd like to see us go because creativity can be stunted in a purely XML/DTD environment.  But the costs associated with using Adobe are rising rapidly and these type of issues make the bean-counter's case for them.

  • Print Booklet Problem when creating hardcopy

    Hey all,
I recently designed a 24 page magazine, and assorted all the pages. I then used the feature Print Booklet in order to create the magazine into the form required by the printing company. The document then had the crop marks, but not the bleed, even though i had set it to have a bleed in the "Print settings" menu. The next step I did was make sure that the page size it would be printed on would be A3, and then set it to landscape to ensure that it would fold correctly once it was stapled. I took the PDF file to the printing company, and had it printed.
However, here is where the problem arose. The company had printed the PDF onto their sheets, and had bundled up the pages into the magazine form, but the size was smaller than an A4, but larger than an A5. Would anyone happen to know why the size became smaller than A4. This means the entirety of the magazine is smaller than an A4 size. The company prints on a sheet of paper larger than A3 in order to use the crop marks and bleed marks.
When i'm in the Print Settings dialogue after pressing "print booklet", this is what I have chosen. The Original document bleeding is at 3mm. However when they printed it they said they could not see the bleed lines?
Would it have anything to do with me pressing 'scale to fit'? I have noticed that saving the PDF with 'scale to fit' on shows the crop marks, but i get the error which i stated earlier.
Another thing i noticed is that when i select the other option, and leave it at 100%, it doesnt give me the crop marks in the PDF. The following screenshots are from adobe reader.
As you can see, there are crop lines (this was from selecting 'scale to fit').
As seen here, there are no crop lines (from not selecting 'scale to fit'
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is for a major project.

One thing that stands out is that you have "Scale to Fit" selected - whereas you should have 100% selected
And I don't think you should be sending printers a "imposed" version of your booklet.
Standard procedure is to send them single page pdfs with crop marks and bleed and then they impose the book.

  • Print Booklet - Spreads Missing from PDF

I am exporting a 123 page book to a PDF containing 16 page signatures to be perfect bound.  I go to File > Print Booklet and set my signature size to 16 and select "2-up Perfect Bound."  The print preview is acurate to what I want my final PDF to look like.  I choose "Print" and when the printing progress bar is about 1/8 to 1/4 finished - Acrobat launches and my "finished" PDF only has three spreads - while InDesign continues to print the pdf.  If I uncheck "View  Adobe PDF Results" under "Printing Preferences" and wait for the PDF to be completed before manually launching Acrobat, I have identical results.  I have also tried printing 16 pages at a time to have one document per 16 page signature.  Same results.
    Any ideas?
an acrobat setting or an InDesign setting?
    Hmmm....

Thank you for the suggestions, adding pages for even multiples of 16 didn't work unfortunately,  I actually did try that prior to posting.
I erased my preferences, which seemed to make a difference initially, but ultimately failed also - print progress bar got to about 3/4 before the problem occurred where it had previously only gone to about 1/8 or 1/4.
For today, my solution was CS3.  Luckily I still had it installed and was able to print the booklet to pdf using it, but still can't get it to work via CS4.

  • Adobe PDF Converter fails to create PDF

    Hi,
This is my first post here. I've searched the forums but have failed to find any posts describing my specific problem.
I am trying to print to PDF using the "Adobe PDF Converter" device, but whenever I try to do so I am presented with a window labeled "Creating Adobe PDF" with a pull-down menu labeled "Document Name" that is entirely empty and a Hide button. Also the window states:
    PDF Name: Untitled.pdf
    PDF Folder: C:\Users\Name\Desktop
If I click the pull-down menu it rolls down with about five empty lines. Now, regardless whether I press the hide button or not, there is no PDF output created in the PDF folder.
This happens regardless of which application I am printing from, e.g. Notepad, Chrome, etc.
This is how I get to the "Creating Adobe PDF" dialog: Ctrl-p -> Choose "Adobe PDF Converter" in the print dialog, then click print -> then choose an output filename in the "Save PDF file as" dialog -> "Creating Adobe PDF" dialog appears.
I have Adobe Design Premium CS3 installed on a Windows 7 32-bit machine.
I have tried reinstalling the "Adobe PDF Converter" printer device, but that didn't help.
Any advice how to fix this would be much appreciated. Thanks
    Andreas

It would appear you are using a different converter, not sure. The one that comes with Acrobat will appear in the printer list as the "Adobe PDF" printer. When you select to print to the Adobe PDF printer, you should get a Save As menu. Then it would proceed. However, I believe that CS3 comes with AA8 and that is likely the problem. To be successful at all, you will need to be sure to update Acrobat to the most current version of AA8 and then it may work. Adobe does not support AA8 on a Win 7 platform and only would recommend an upgrade.
    That is some thoughts.

  • Print Booklet: Cannot choose Adobe PDF as printer

    Hello there!
I used to be able to choose "Adobe PDF" as the printer when I export my document through Print Booklet.
For some reason, selecting "Adobe PDF" is no longer available. Does anyone know how I can get this option back?
I believe it disappeared when I uninstalled the driver for my printer. But I have since installed it and there is still no Adobe PDF option available.
    Many thanks for your help!
    -Paula

I would recommend not to use the booklet function in InDesign. Imposing is a work that the printer has to do, not you.
Export a PDF. Other applications without PDF export have on the Mac in the Print dialog a PDF button, there is Save as PDF with Apple's Quartz engine and if you have installed Acrobat Pro you find the better method to save as Adobe PDF.

  • Print booklet fails after upgrade to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard I had to reinstall the driver for my HP 4000N printer. Now all of my booklets print with the right side truncated in the middle as if the paper were 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 instead of 11 inches wide. The InDesign preview shows it correctly. It printed fine yesterday in OS X 10.5, InDesign CS3. Does anyone have advice?

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new disk and InDesign has the same problem of clipping a landscape layout booklet.
I bought a new HP Laserjet and it has the same problem.
I downloaded a trial version of InDesign CS5 on the new system with the new printer and it has the same problem.
InDesign just thinks the paper is only 8-1/2" wide in the Print Booklet procedure and it clips the printing at 8-1/2". It will print a normal landscape page fine. It shows the Preview of the booklet correctly. I can save the booklet as a PostScript file and Preview will print it fine. I've been printing the same booklet under 10.5 for several years without problem.
InDesign just won't print the booklet correclty under Snow Leopard.

  • Fail to create PDF from 2 templates with different page sizes

Hi,<br /><br />I am having problems to create a PDF with multiple page sizes and using 2 templates.<br /><br />I have to create a PDF using two dynamic templates. The second template has multiple pages, some A4 some A3, which I select through subforms (A3 specific subforms are on an A3 page).<br /><br />So:<br />^job <mdf1> -zOut.pdf<br /><fields><br />^form <mdf2>.mdf<br />^page 2<br />^group G_heading_A3<br /><fields><br /><br />The templates on their own are ok, but when I combine them the second is always A4, even if a) the subforms are on A3 (heading_A3) and if b) the page is A3 (page 2).<br /><br />I couldn't find anything on the web nor in the documentation. Does anyone have a clue?<br /><br />Thanks, Edward

The build booklet feature is for very basic booklets, not something like this.
Sorry, but you’ll need to make everything full size and then do the cutting.

  • Problems trying to get create pdf printer to work

I just subscribed to the create pdf solution specifically for the print to
    pdf capability.
I use Windows 7 and installed the software OK (after several abortive
attempts due to various installation error messages).
I now have two printers created: Xerox Phaser 6120 PS (created to overcome
the installation errors) and Adobe Create pdf desktop printer.
If I print a file to the Xerox printer, it prompts for a file name but
creates a prn file, not a pdf file.
If I print to the Adobe create pdf desktop printer, it just sends the file
to the print queue and after a few minutes the print queue displays printer
    error.
How can I get this to work? It used to be so simple with my old Adobe
Acrobat v6 on Windows XP. I have wasted so much time on this; it is so
    frustrating!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks, David.
    That has fixed the problem.
It would be nice if the print to pdf facility actually prompted to provide a file name and location where you wanted the file to be stored, rather than putting it into a print queue, then disappearing., for it to upload it to the Adobe server from where you have to login and copy it back down to a pc again just wastes time and bandwidth.
But at least I can now do what I wanted, so many thanks.
    Regards
    David

  • Can't create PDF docs

I have Acrobat Pro 8 as part of Design Standard CS3. I've never used the create PDF function before but wanted to convert my xmas letter from Publisher 2007 to PDF to send out in email. It gets to 50% then gives the message failed to create PDF correct problem and try again. I have no idea what might be the problem. I tried several other Publisher documents and the same thing happened. So then I also tried to convert Word 2007 docs to PDF but found it would just go into a hang mode at 10% with again no resulting PDF file.
Any ideas how I can get this to work?
Other info of relevance: OS = Vista

Instead of the create PDF option that is not needed for something like your letter, print to the Adobe PDF printer. If that does not work, try again with Print-to-File selected. Open the created file in Distiller and you should end up with a PDF. If that does work, then you have most likely deactivated AcroTray that runs in the background. AcroTray is a necessary application for the complete conversion to work without the print-to-file work around.
AcroTray is located in the Distiller folder.

  • Print booklets from InDesign.

I used to create print booklets from InDesign but this option disappeared with version CS5. Is Adobe doing anything about restoring this feature? What are my options in the meantime?

    Are you patched to 5.0.4?
I run XP SP2, rather than 3, and Acrobat 9 pro (now at version 9.3.2) and I haven't had a problem using Print Booklet to make a PDF, so I suspect either it's something in SP3, or more likely a problem on the system.
First thing might be to try replacing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
Next might be to unistall the PDF printer and reinstall it (does it work outside of Print Booklet?). Make sure you update Acrobat first, if you haven't already done so.
If neither of those works, see if there's anything else running in the background that could be causing a problem.
Finally, if nothing is working, it's time to look at a scripted solution. I know two scripts, both by Dave Saunders, that can handle simple two-up saddle stitch impositions without creep. One is better than the other if you have objects crossing the spine, but neither is as sophiticated in what it can do as Print Booklet, which can handle perfect binding with various signature sizes.

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • PDF Printer fails to create document

I have Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Standard and today suddenly I cannot create a PDF file from Word 2007. It will create PDF files of up to 5-6 pages but when I try the file that contains 657 pages it will only go to page 90 before I get this error message: Adobe PDF printer failed to create the PDF file.
I have tried this a couple of times (shut down computer in between each try) and every time I get the same error at the same page. The last attempt was 2 1/2 hours ago and I still have the little Acrobat icon turning circles in my toolbar. Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem?
I am working on a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP SP2. I bought Acrobat back in May and this is the first time I've had a problem with it.

Hi DJ, what is on page 90 (or 91) that is keeping the PDF printer from completing? Any half tones in any graphics? Any intense tables? Graphs?
Have you tried just making a PDF from that one page? Drill down to the page that is causing the problem, try removing one element at a time, printing to PDF, until you discover what one element is creating this issue.
We had some snow flakes with gradient half tones in one of our documents that was causing an issue much like you are experiencing.

  • Adobe PDF printer failed to create the PDF file

Just installed Acrobat 9 Standard on new HP Touchsmart running Vista 64 bit - tried to create a pdf from a *.pub, and got the error message above, and "please correct the error and try again".  If I knew what the error was, I'd try to correct it.

If you check the PDF file with ctrl-D and select the font tab, you will likely find that the font you mention is not embedded. The font not being embedded will make major differences in terms of what fonts Acrobat or Reader finds to do a substitution. Also, the fonts may not display correctly if you have the Use Local Fonts check box selected incorrectly (just try changing that choice).
Fonts can be a major issue in terms of licensing for embedding and such. Also, different job.settings file selections may cause fonts to not be properly embedded.
Since the printer works, the issue of the other packages is the need for PDF Maker to be active in those applications that you are trying to import files from. To check PDF Maker, you need to test it in those applications, not in Acrobat. Trying things in Acrobat is the last step, not the first step. In WORD, there is a need for certain settings to be properly set to allow PDF Maker to work. These may be the issues you are having. So, go back to the applications of interst and be sure that PDF Maker works from the application -- this is the create PDF button.
