Print Driver Settings Not Saving at Print Dialog [IDCS3, Vista]

Hi. On our only design machine that runs Vista, when the user tries to print something from InDesign CS3 and has to turn on duplexing in the printer driver setup, on clicking OK, those settings immediately go away, and thus the document will not print duplexed. It works fine on our XP machines.
A workaround is to set such printer driver settings via Vista's Control Panel, and this does work, however it's a bit cumbersome, since we print all kinds of documents.
Pertaining Specs:
- Adobe InDesign CS3 (5.0.3) for Windows
- Vista Home SP1 (I think)
- Konica-Minolta Bizhub C500
- EFI Fiery 2.01 Driver for Vista / PostScript / Image Controller 405
It's similar to this issue, but the specs differ:
Michael C Stone, "Indesign documents reset printer settings IDCS2 XPSP2" #, 14 Jun 2008 5:19 pm

It does say, "Double-sided: Yes," in Windows' printer properties for the Bizhub PS (and PCL) Fiery driver(s) -- in fact, this may have been from me turning it on for the PS driver in Windows Registry, as it was off for some reason, but seemed to make no real difference anyway -- but I think the duplexing option would have been grayed-out in the Fiery driver's dialog if not available as some various other options are -- the driver has the capability to poll the device for such options availability -- and I don't actually see anything duplexing-related on the Installable Options tab, but the Installed list is identical to one of our XP computers with no apparent issues with printing to the drivers from InDesign -- although at one point, if a Vista user printed an InDesign document and saved it (and thus the printer settings), XP users for some reason couldn't print the document without forcing a change in the print driver settings, but I believe this was due to using the same drivers but different TCP/IP port configurations per machine (Vista doesn't need the IP_ prefix as XP seems to).

  • Booklet to PDF print preset settings not saved

I'm using ID CS4 on Vista64 Business and trying to output numerous booklet layouts to PDF for a client to print in-house at their premises. My lo-res tests work perfectly on their printer, I now need to output everything @ 300dpi etc.
I've set up a print preset to use the Adobe PDF printer driver and set all defaults I can find (Control panel etc) to High Quality output.
Interrogating the preset directly reports settings as "High Quality" but when using the Booklet Print dialogue Setup button to check the printer prefs, it always shows (and outputs) "Standard" settings.
Is there a way to get the ID Booklet option to remember the default PDF printer prefs?  It's a real pain to change these manually for each print run.
Thanks, any advice gratefully received.  [  I'm probably missing something embarrassingly fundamental.  ~:o(  ]

    Hi Peter,
I can only find a printer folder under Control Panel > Printers. This is where I've already changed the PDF Printer defaults without success. Oddly, I appear to have fixed it by renaming the print driver instance there to "Adobe PDFx" (probably any other name would also work).
Whilst troubleshooting, I found I could also see another network "Adobe PDF printer" on another machine. I had a look over the settings there and saw the option "render print job on client machine". This got me thinking I might NOT have been using the LOCAL PDF printer setup and was just fooling myself.
I changed the local PDF Printer name to be certain I could identify it correctly and Hey Presto!, it suddenly started accepting the preset changes. I changed it back to "Adobe PDF" and it reverted back to the "standard" settings and just ignores everything.
It may be a weird Vista 64 security thing, this OS does some very annoying things when trying to access stuff, even though I have master admin privileges.
I'll simply leave the printer name as "PDFx" for now as this is getting the job done.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Print driver is not shown in "Print Using:" menu

I have a HP psc 2410 printer that I have connected directly to my Mac, but I want to connect it though my Windows PC which is my home server. The printer works fine when it is connected via the USB cable and the driver listed after "Print Using:" in the add new printer box is called "hp all-in-one 2.2.9". When I try to add the same printer via the Windows network I see it the printer, but when I try to find the driver in the "Print Using:" menu, I don't find it. How can it be there for the USB connection, but not for the network connection? Where do I find it, if it isn't in that driver list?
    Thank you!

Print drivers written using the older Mac printer driver model specifically list the type of connections they support. Most of these old style drivers do not support Windows printing. I think that is what you are seeing.

  • Printer driver will not allow color printing

I have a new Windows 7-64 bit OS on my new computert, and an HP CP1518ni (1500 series) color laserjet printer that has worked fine under Vista (32 bit) previously.
I went to the driver support site, since my installation disk didn't enable Windows 7, and got the universal UPD PCL6 driver, as indicated, and downloaded it (upd-pcl6-x64-5.4.0.11744.exe) and ran it.
It prints just fine in B&W, not in color.  When I go to printer preferences it just says "color - no" and there I'm stuck.
Can anyone help?  I can't use a B&W printer for all my work, so I can't switch to this better computer yet.

    to KB123:
did you remember setting your driver to only print in grayscale? since there is an option to do that on the drivers installed on your computer.
If you're not sure, try to go to your printer icon under Printers and Faxes (for windows XP) or PRINTERS (for Vista and 7)
Right click the printer icon and go to printing preferences. Under FEATURE tab, see if there is a check mark on the print in grayscale (its somewhere almost at the bottom of the screen)
Or else, try to uninstall the drivers of your printer and re.install.

  • Media selection not saved in Print dialog

When I select my Media, Quality and Bit Depth in the "Main" window in the Print dialog, they are not saved even though I select Save Current Settings as Preset. They change back to Plain Paper, 300 dpi and 8-bit. This will not work for high quality photo printing on my Canon iPF5000 printer. I've tried many different settings but nothing I have tried will get my settings to be saved and used. What are the "magic words" because the ones I've been using are not working?
I can print from Photoshop through a Canon 16-bit plug-in using my normal print paper profiles and get excellent results so the printer is working just fine. I am using the latest Canon print driver and firmware. I think if I could get the correct media type, quality and bit depth in the printer driver, I'd get good results as well. I have a new paper profiling device that can only print the test patches through the print driver... so I'm stuck so far.
    Your help is appreciated.
    OS X 10.9.2, Mac Pro 3.33 Ghz 6-core, 24 GB RAM

I discovered the root of my problem. Canon does not have a printer driver for my iPF5000 that runs under Mavericks. My workaround was to load Mountain LIon on a separate drive and use the Canon supported print driver for OS X 10.8.x. Running under 10.8 worked and I was able to successfully input and send the media type to the printer. I was making printer paper profiles with a new x-rite ColorMunki Photo.
After creating the paper profile, I copied it over to Mavericks where I use Canon's 16-bit plug-in in Photoshop to send print jobs to the iPF5000. This apparently uses a slightly different print driver than the stand-alone print driver since it works just fine. The profiles create prints that are a very close match to the screen images.
Whether or not Canon will support Mavericks for the iPF5000 is anybody's guess since it's an older printer.

  • CS6 cant save the printer driver settings

The problem is similar to this http://forums.adobe.com/message/4431235#4431235
Illustrator simply does not save any of the settings in the driver tabs (such as custom print sizes, paper tipe, source tray etc) unless I hit the Print button (e.g. I cant save those settings temporarily by pressing the Done button nor I can save a print presset for a later use), and that is a very very very annoying thing an it brings back some memories of the time I upgraded to CS and CS2 and the case then was even worse because it didnt save the printer driver settings even by printing and allways reverted to the default settings, and now I remember why I hate Adobe so much, because they never had a fix for that until CS3 came out.
That issue has been tested with XP 7 Vista both 32 and 64 (a lot of printer drivers) and it is not a single configuration problem, so please before asking some questions about the kind of the system and software etc do the following with your CS6 (or CS,CS2) and please tell me what happens. Choose File->Print and in the dialog choose whatever printer you have, press 'Setup...' button in the lower left corner, ignore the stupid prompt that some unknown Adobe genius tech invented, press Preferences button in the new Print window that pops up and in the printer driver UI window choose whatever setting you like that differs from the default setting, and then press Ok then Print and in the main Illustrator print dialog pres Done (but not Print if you are in CS6) button to close the dialog. Then open the Print dialog window again, navigate to the printer driver you just adjusted and please tell me what settings you have - those that you adjusted or the default settings. Thank you in advance!

Thank you for the responceq Johny_07, unfortunately it solves the problem only if I have to specify the size of the media, but I need to specify the source tray, paper type and so on, parameters that are not present in the dialog box, and those are not remembered by Illustrator also. Do you experience that problem, I have allways wondered why there is no info concerning that problem, is it happening only with my instalations or it is a general program bug.

Solution 1: Use a supported installation.
The following are unsupported installations, and the supported solutions:
If you install Acrobat (Professional or Standard) on a 64-bit operating system, then you may
see this error. Please update Acrobat to version 8.1 or later. You can update from within
Acrobat via the help pull-down menu, or download the updater from the following location:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows.
If you install Acrobat to a shared network disk instead of a local hard disk, then the Adobe PDF
printer is not installed. Install Acrobat on a local hard disk.

Solution 2: Ensure that the Print Spooler process is running and set to
    Automatic, and then repair Acrobat.
    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.
    3. Locate the service Print Spooler.
    4. If the Startup Type is not Automatic, then set it to Automatic:
    a. Right-click the Print Spooler.
    b. Choose Properties.
    c. Choose the General tab.
    d. Choose Automatic in the Startup Type menu.
    e. Click OK.
    5. If the Print Spooler service is not running, then start it.
    a. Right-click the Print Spooler line.
    b. Select Start from the menu.
    6. Start Acrobat, and choose Help > Detect And Repair.
Solution 3: Ensure that the Print Spooler process has no additional
    dependencies.
Only the Remote Procedure Call dependency is required for Print Spooler to operate.
Additional Services can attach to the process but will interfere with restarting the service.
If the Print Spooler process has additional dependencies, then please refer to the steps
    below.
To remove all services listed under "This service depends on the following system
    components":
    1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.
    3. Right-click Print Spooler and choose Properties.
    4. Click the Dependencies tab.
    5. Record services under "This service depends on the following system components" and click
    OK.
Imporatnt: Remote Procedure Call is a system service and should not be removed.
    6. Temporarily remove associated programs for the listed services.
    7. Contact the service vendor for removal information if removal of associated software does
    not remove the service.
    8. Start Acrobat, and choose Help > Detect And Repair.
To disable all services listed under "The following system components depend on this
    service":
    1. Choose Start > Set

I am having similar problems. After years of successful use, about a year ago, my printer (Epson stylus Photo R300) stopped working. After much investigation, it appears my computer no longer recognizes my printer. I've followed resets, safe boots, uninstalls, reinstalls, etc. This happened so long ago, I don't recall what I was doing when it happened. I'm figuring it happened shortly after a Software Update... So far none of the fixes recommended to me have solved the problem. I've been using Epson customer support, but they've stopped responding. None of their suggestions have seemed to work either.

  • Change print driver settings on canon printer to select one or two sided printing

My Canon print driver prints double sided by default. I want to change to single sided, or be able to select single or double on a per document basis. How do I change my print driver settings?

Here is the solution I used.
The Print driver for Canon, UFRII will default to double sided printing.
Select a document, and select Print.
Open Presets and select Show Presets (this step may not be necessary)
Open Layout, then open Finishing. Change Prunt Style to One side or one page
Open Presets and Save Current Setting. At this point you can change the name of the preset (one page) and select if the chafe is for only the selected printer or all (Canon) printers.
This sure seemed harder than it should be.

  • Mailbox and other printer-specific settings are saved with an Excel file

I am having a similar issue: Users are saving excel documents onto a notwork share, some are using sercure print others do not use secure print. The users using secure print are saving a document with secure print selected and when others go to print it secure
prints for them. The registry edit will solve if I go to each users machine and add the registry edit, however as we add new users to the company it would be a headache managing who needs this key setup. Is there a way for people who do not want to use secure
print to not inherit these settings? I mean the easy solution is just to have users select the printer properties they want each time they print, but I have come to terms that, that will not happen despite the issues caused.

I cleared the print spoolers and rebooted.
I have uninstalled Adobe Acrobat /rebooted/reinstalled.  Install says it adds the Adobe PDF printer but nothing happens.
Problem exists for all users including Administrators.
I have renamed the C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 and C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\Printers folder.
Both are recreated when I try to reinstall the Adobe PDF Printer.
I can add network printers with no errors.
I have cleared Adobe PDF printer from registry.  e.g.:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3\Adobe PDF Converter
I even imported Adobe PDF registry entry from a working system taking care to adjust the system values accordingly.
I also verified permissions for registry keys and application/driver folders were set correctly.
I have completely reloaded the installation software and imported the Adobe PDF drivers from a working system.
Not sure if this an Adobe issue, but that appears to be the only printer I cannot re-add.
Any constructive ideas on what to try next would be appreciated.

When I upgraded to Reader 9.4 I lost all ability to print Adobe pdf's.  Finally uninstalled 9.4, re-installed 8.2, changed the filename "high quality.joboptions" to "Adobe PDF converter.joboptions" and was back in business.  Pretty screwey fix, but after getting no help from online chats with Adobe and a day's lost work I was happy to have it.

My Epson r800 prints, but does not appear in Printer List. It is connected via USB to the iMac. A Brother LH-2070N is connected via AirPort Extreme. I need to use Utilities to clean the head of cartridge, check levels, etc.. Is there a way to fix this problem?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    For your Epson try this:
Hard Drive, Library, Printers (folder), Epson folder,
Inkjetprinter folder, Utilities folder and here you
will find Epson Printer Utility2. Click on it and it
    should work.
Note. Epson utilities will not work unless the
Printer is directly connected to the computer.
Had the same issue with my 2200 photo and the above
    worked.
Tried again after reinstalling the drivers. There is no separate Inkjet Folder, but the Printer Utility is within the Epson folder. Unfortunately, the r800 still does not appear in the Printer List, hence no utility.

  • Printer Preferences is not available when printing PDF

Printer Preferences is not available when printing PDF
I have a PSC 1315 printer I have been using for several years on a system with Windows XP without any problem.  After
purchasing an HP Pavilion 500 with Windows 8.1 Pro, I migrated my printer to the new computer.  I was disallowed to use the
original driver, and was directed to download the latest driver and software for this printer from an HP website.  At
first, things seemed ok, until I ran across several issues, one of which is this one.
Whenever I try printing a PDF file, Windows 8 does not let me see printer preferences.  My work around is to go into
printer properties and save changes as default, then I can print PDF files.  What happened to the preferences window?  It
appears I have lost functionality with the upgrade.
Is this a known problem, and what's the solution?
