Print Image Format..please clarify!!

Ok, so I want to prepare my images in PS CS6 for print. I have read several articles that TIFF files print best since they do not lose any information but sometimes you can barely see the difference from a TIFF to a JPEG. However, I have also been told by a professional wedding photographer that you should always give your clients JPEGS since it is such a universal file format. I noticed on websites like CVS photo or Shutterfly they do not even accept TIFF files.
My question is this...what file settings are best when printing JPEGS?
I would normally save a file as the following:
- JPEG (quality 12/baseline optimized)
- 16-bit
- 300 dpi
- 3000x the longest side
- RGB color space
However, when I use the 'Image Processor' in PS to save all of my open files as JPEGs, it always saves them as 8-bit, sRGB color space. I have have a few concerns with this..
- Do JPEGs have to be 8-bit? If so, is this ok for printing? I have heard 16-bit is best.
- Shouldn't print files be RGB color space? NOT sRGB?
- Does the dpi matter?
Is there any easy way to change the auto settings when saving as a JPEG in the 'Image Processor'? Or maybe I could create an action for saving? Although, I have tried this and it never seems to work properly.
Please someone help me clarify!! This file stuff is driving me nuts!
Thank you in advance :  )

Jpeg format only supports 8bit color. Even if 16bit color was supported most OS device drivers only do 8bit color and printers are 8bit color devices. With the image Processor you should be able to specify jpeg quality set it to 10. That will be much smaller file size then quality 12 and you will see no difference in print quality between quality 10 and 12.  You should also make sure convert to sRGB is checked. Print Labs expect images in sRGB. Do not resize your images however make sure your source files print dpi resolution is set to print the size image you want.
If you want to automate the print resolution you can download my crafting actions package. I contains a Plug-in script I wrote that you can use in actions to set the images DPI to have the images longest side print the size you record in the action.

  • Unsupported Image Format - Please Help

    Since upgrading Aperture to 1.5 all my RAW images (.CRW & .CR2) from my Canon 300D and 20D, initially show when I click them and then very quickly turn to a maron coloured box with the words 'Unsupported Image Format'. I am really worried about this as it's not just 1 or 2, but all my RAW images which is about 80% of my library. All JPG images are fine.
    I would be very greatful to hear some work arounds to this.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    It's not your RAM. Folks on quite a few forums have been reporting similar problems. As well there have been several threads on this forum of a similar nature.
    I've a similar, but different "Unsupported Image Format" error.
    I shoot Canon's 1Dsmk2 and 5D cameras, both of which put out .CR2 files, and both of which are supported by Aperture.
    So far Aperture has been able to open all of these.
    However, I converted quite a few of them to DNG files with the last version (Adobe DNG converter 3.4 I think - 3.5 is the current version so I'm guessing the last one was 3.4)
    Aperture is unable to open any of these DNG files. I get that same 1/2 second preview flash and then the error.
    All of these DNG files open fine with PS CS2, Bridge, Lightroom. They also appear correctly with other Apple Products - Preview and iPhoto [ 6.0.5 (316) ].
    So the problem seems to be Aperture specific.
    I've done some tests with the latest Adobe DNG converter (version 3.5). There are basically 4 settings that one can alter. Embed original, size of preview, compression, and to store the file as a mosaic or linear. If the "linear" option is selected, alone or in combination with any of the other options, then Aperture cannot open the file.
    If linear (in version 3.5) is not selected then Aperature seems to be able to open the files converted with all of the other options, either selected alone or in combinations.
    None of my DNG's converted with the last converter (3.4) had the "linear" option selected.
    Also, I've tried running a DNG created with v3.4 through the v3.5 converter to see if it would then open in Aperture, but this didn't work.
    I've tried rebuilding the library and the other fixes mentioned by others here - every other program except Aperture seems to be able to open these files.
    So, I'm hoping that there is a v1.5.1 out pretty quickly whicch addresses these image compatibility errors.

  • Print images in PNG and BMP formats

    I have converted images from xwd to bmp by using JAI. now I want to print them.
    How can I print PNG and BMP Files? How can I read images in different formats and make them print.
    Please help me !

    JAI follows the Java 2D printing model. All you need to do is to read your PNG, BMP images as RenderedImage, Renderable, or BufferedImage objects. To print an image, draw the image object on the printer's graphics context using one of drawImage(), drawRenderedImage(), and drawRenderableImage() methods of the Graphics2D class.
    I have some sample code at http://www.geocities.com/larryhr/samplecode/samplecode.html. See the Printing section. JAIImagePrint.java should give you some indication as to how to print images read by the JAI codec.

  • "Unsupported image format" with my new Nikon D800E - please help.

    I get this message: "unsupported image format" when I try to load photos from my new Nikon D800E. Aperture 2.1.4. Worked fine with old Nikon D300. I can get a thumbnail image in Projects, but that's it. Suggestions, please?!

    Maria, the raw support for the Nikon D800E requires Aperture 3, see the technical specifications for the raw support in Aperture:    D800E**,   ** Requires Aperture 3 or later.
    Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
    You will have to upgrade to Aperture 3, to use the raw images with Aperture or shoot jpeg or use the software that came with your camera to develope the raw.

  • How to change the bar chart rendering image format in SSRS

    Hello all,
    I am working with SQL Server 2008 R2 and I have a SSRS bar chart report, when the report got rendered over online or if the take Export (PDF and PPT), the image is in png format always, which is taking too much of time to execute the report in case of large
    data.
    Can, It be possible that the rendered image is in jpeg format instead of png.
    If Yes, please share the appropriate steps to follow:
    Thanks in advance
    Pankaj Kumar Yadav-

    Hi Pankaj067,
    According to your description, you want to change the bar chart rendering image format as JPEG format when previewing the report or exporting to a PDF file .
    In Reporting Services, the chart rendering image format is PNG by default. It’s a by-design behavior. And it doesn’t open any API for us to change the image type when exporting a chart to a format. So in your scenario, your requirement can’t be achieved
    in Reporting Services currently. I would recommend you submit a feature request to Microsoft at this site:
    https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer. So that we can try to modify and expand the product features based on your needs.
    If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

    When printing any report, diagnostic or form from the machine system I get printed image shift approx. 1/2" from the top.
    Is there any adjustment that can be made to the MFP to center image?

    Hi @patrick22152,
    I understand that when printing documents or a printer hardware self test, it shifts 1/2" from the top of the page. I can help you with this.
    Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
    It sounds like the paper isn't feeding properly. Since you are having this issue with the hardware tests and printing from the computer. If it was just the computer, I would check the paper type selected in the print driver, to make sure it isn't set on the proper paper type and not the default unspecified paper.
    Try another type of paper to see if you get the same results.
    I have provided a document with some steps to try to see if that will resolve the issue.

  • PDF image format?

    From what I understand, the PDF file format can contain text, vector graphics and raster graphics in many different formats. When I print to a PDF (via Save as PDF... in the print dialog box), what type of image format is actually used inside the PDF (which I assume is just a container format, really)?
    Say I come across a full quality RAW file from a 10-megapixel camera. If I open that image in an image editor and then print it as a PDF, what ends up in the PDF file? Is it a JPEG? A PNG? Some type of otherwise unknown lossless format?
    I assume the screenshot mechanism in OS X that saves to PDF uses similar technology. In that case, is a screenshot saved as a PDF better or worse quality than a PNG or JPEG (using a utility like TinkerTool to change the default screenshot format)?

    Actually, it doesn't matter what you set on a folio level. The article settings override the folio settings. The folio settings are supposed to appear as the default when you create articles, but it doesn't work that way at this time.

  • How to get Safari printing images in proper resolution?

    I have problems printing high resolution images from a web page.
    Example: When printing a 300 dpi image that measures 5 x 6 inches Safari rescales this image to a resolution of about 282 dpi which results in a slightly larger image. The web page contains CSS definitions with the correct image size. It is suspicious that the printed images always seem to be rescaled by 6.348%. I tried different CSS definitions and page structures with the same result.
    When the CSS definition for the image size is increased by 6.348% the resolution and image size fits the original values and dimensions.
    What about this magical 6.348%?
    The problem is verified on 10.4.11 and 10.5 with Safari 3.0.1 on different machines with all kind of images in every resolution you can think of, with different printer drivers (but I do not think this is relevant) - all images are rescaled by this magic factor. I tried all kind of printer settings, took a look at the Library plists related to printing ... Please help me.
    It is weird that Safari offers ICC support for color proof matches but is not able to print an image with its correct resolution/dimensions. Firefox for example does not touch the image resolution, why the heck Safari does?

    Hi Ned,
    Website builders are using maximum 75 DPI images. These are to small i quality for other use when you are looking for quality images. The reason for using images in small size like 75 DPI is to prevent that the website is getting to big in size, an for using them on the internet they are good enough for best viewing.
    QuickTimeKirk is right to get better images from a website. If the developer is NOT offering a downloadble better quality you have to do it with the on they offer.

  • Raw Files Appear Deleted or Corrupted Suddenly in Aperture with Unsupported Image Format Error

    I have been using Aperture 3, latest update, for the past year. Today, I tried to import new raw files from my new Sony RX1r and, as far as I can see, all raw files in Aperture give the "Unsupported Image Format" and alert symbol in the library where not only new files should be, but also ALL PREVIOUS RAW FILES. These files do no even show up as existing in the iPhoto Library.
    This is, needless to say, distressing, as hundreds and hundreds of photos seem lost. Also, the files show a reduced pixel size and file sizes all go to .5 Mb. Some of the photos seemed to show up initially and look fine until I tried to open them, then they all either disappear or show the Unsupported Image Format instead of the opened file. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library, but no help.
    I have looked in these discussions and see similar problems with Aperture. Perhaps, Apple has not made an update for the RX1r from the RX1 for raw files, but why should all older raw files now be corrupted, especially those recently made with my Olympus OM-D? Had no problem with Aperture until this disaster.
    Please help.
    William

    Just an update. Restarted computer and attempted rebuilds of iPhoto library a couple more times and finally files and photos mostly recovered, except for those I had tried to open. Aperture seems to have a problem, or a host of them, dealing with RAW files, and there is no update yet for the Sony RX1R for Aperture or iPhoto. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, seems to work great with these files directly, so that will be where all photos go for now. Will iPhoto and Aperture just become old archives? It is so infuriating that Apple does not allow for simple importing and exporting compatibility with such an excellent program as Lightroom 5 just to protect their somewhat poorly supported Aperture. I've been a staunch Apple supporter and user since the 80's, but having more doubts about the direction this company is taking.

  • Loading custom image formats

    Hello all.
    I am wanting to load a custom image format into my Java application, and am wondering how to do that. I have a few ideas to try but I figure if there is a site out there (or someone with the knowledge), there is no need for me to re-invent the wheel. So hopefully, someone might be able to expedite my learning. :)
    The image format I want to read actually contains multiple images, with 1 color palette at the end of the file. I'd like to create a series of (I assume) BufferedImages for all the images contained within the file.
    Are there any sites out there that can send me through a quick tutorial on rolling my own images, or can anyone give me a short function to do so?
    Thanks so much!

    Okay... I failed. I could really use some help in getting this work. Please.
    I have a file, which contains 1 or more compressed bitmap images and a palette. I have a small Perl script that will convert the images in the file into multiple bitmap image files, so I know where the data is and I know I have the data locations right. :)
    To create a BITMAP, I must reverse the order of the palette (perl function):
    sub reversePalette() {
      my $output = "";
      for (my $i=0; $i < length($_[0]); $i=$i+4) {
        $output = $output . substr($_[0], $i+2, 1) . substr($_[0], $i+1, 1) . substr($_[0], $i+0, 1) . chr(0);
      return $output;
    }For the image data itself, it uses a simple RLE encoding. If I see a 0, I check the next number and "uncompress" the data by adding that many 0's to the output file.
    So, what I would like to do is convert my Perl script into a Java class that will take this sprite file and return an array of BufferedImages, which can then be used for whatever.
    Any help in this would be greatly appreciated! I can't even figure out how to properly load a valid BMP file manually using WritableRaster and ColorModel. I'm so lost. :(

  • How to convert EPS(image file) file in to other image format e.g NIGMAS

    Hi friends,
    I want to make a tool which will help to convert the EPS image file into other image format BY USING JAVA TECHNOLOGY. I havent done this type of file conversion before, so any body please explain it to me from the basic how can i go for it, what r the require things, where should i get the help of it, which java API should i use etc. i ll be vry thankful.
    My actual requirement is i want to convert the EPS file into the NIGMAS(Nihon computer graphic mapping System) file format.
    Thank you in anticiption.

    The easiest, but not necesarily the best, way is to use ImageMagick's convert utility. From Java you can use Runtime.exec to invoke convert.exe ... ImageMagick is opensource and supports many different formats ( www.ImageMagick.com )
         * Converts an eps file to a graphic that is suitable for the web.
         * We use ImageMagick's 'convert' utility to convert .eps files into either gif or png format.
         * The output format is determine by the extension that you set for the output file.
         * Sample command:
         * convert -density 208x208 /export/home/kpmg/tomcattest/jsp/1.eps
         *                                    /export/home/kpmg/tomcattest/jsp/1.png
         * Although convert supports about 100 different parameters, we are only using 1:
         * -density     (sets the vertical and horizontal resolution in pixels of the image)
         * Density sets the vertical and horizontal resolution in pixels of the image.
         * It should be changed based on the resolution of the user's monitor
         * (e.g. if hi-res display settings, then density will need to be greater
         * than if running on a low-res display, which would make the same image look really big )
         * You may want to use other convert parameters, such as -sharpen
         * to make the image look better, or -compress and
         * -quality to change the kb size of the image.
         * For the full list of parameters see:
         *      http://www.imagemagick.org/www/convert.html
         * @param inFile The absolute path to the eps file to be converted
         * @param outFile The absolute path to the desired output graphic file.
         *                         NOTE: the format of the output file is determined by the
         *                         extension that you give for this parameter (e.g. file.png will
         *                          be written as a png file )
    public void eps2www(String inFile, String outFile, String density) throws Exception

  • Excel Rendering Extension: Unknown Image Format Imag/GIF - SSRS Excel Export

    We are using the SSRS 2012 [ExportOpenXML].
    When a report is export to excel, getting the message Unknow Image Format IMage/GIF.
    Please suggest a fix the above issue.
    As per article Excel Rendering extension: Unknow Image Format image/x-png suggestion verified in Visual studio selected the gif file in the Solution Explorer panel, checked the Properties
    the MIME Type which is already set as image/gif.
    Note: Dev environment its working as expected and but issue is observed in QA environment. I wonder some setting is missing on QA enviornment which I'm unable to get the difference exactly.
    Quick help would be higly appreciated.

    Hi Niranjan,
    Based on the current description, I understand that there should be no issue when exporting the report containing image which is Image/Gif type in Dev environment because you have changed the MIME type to Image/Gif.
    To narrow down the scope to find the cause, I want to confirm some information below:
    1. Check Reporting Services edition in QA environment, if the Reporting Services edition is same between QA and Dev environment, you can back up the .rdl file and copy the .rdl file to QA environment and then export the report in Excel format to check
    whether the issue persists.
    2. If you export the report to other format such as PDF rather than Excel format in QA environment, please confirm whether the issue persists.
    3. If you change the MIME type to Image/Png and then export the report to Excel in Dev and QA environment, please confirm whether the issue persists.
    Supposing there is error message, please post the details to the forum for further analysis.

  • Unsupported Image Format for DNG from GF1?

    I am in the process of trying to switch from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 (in case you are wondering why the main reason is increasing integration between iOS and Aperture).
    Most of the images in my Lightroom catalog are from Nikon DSLRs which when I import as DNGs from Lightroom into Aperture show up just fine. However, all of the old DNGs I try to import from Lightroom as DNGs that were shot with my Panasonic GF1 don't render in Aperture and just show up as "Unsupported Image Format."
    Please note that new GF1 images I import from the SD card of my GF1 import just fine. The problem seems limited to GF1 images saved in Lightroom as DNGs that I am importing into Aperture.
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?
    Thank you.

    Solved it. Had nothing to do with Photoshop PS4 install, it had to do with moving my home space to a larger external drive. One of the "import" setting changed (I don't remember changing it) such that the images weren't getting imported into Aperture. (Re-?)checked that, and all is well. Will go for the PS4-reinstall tomorrow.
