Printer recreated on CUPS restart

lpadmin -x printer will successfully delete a printer, however, CUPS will recreate it when restarted on systemctl restart cups-browsed.service.
Trying to access this printer on the managing section of http://localhost:631 will give a page not found error.
I also removed this printer entry on every file on /etc/cups, but it still didn't worked. It will get recreated as well.
What's wrong here?

Hello Gordon,
First of all, welcome to the Apple discussions.
`I tried deleting the printer and re-installing it, again with no luck.
What are you meaning with I TRIED DELETING THE PRINTER??
On the in-stall CD that came with your printer is a un-installer, you have to use that to get rid of ALL drives. After you finish re-install the printer.
When you do so unplug everything that is connected to the computer to the printer. Shut down the printer, when everything is back on an plugged in than press the power button on the printer.
Let me know if so ...
Discussions is a ongoing process. Hope to see you around anytime you need us, or can offer help to others.

  • solved Setting up Arch to print to remote cups printer?

Any useful info on setting up Arch to print to remote cups printer? I did'nt succeed using the Cups Setup guide:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS_Setup
I have tried the localhost:631 admin interface and kprint. I get  /usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp failure and "stopped with status 22!" errors.
I will set the cupsd.conf LogLevel to debug2 and post anything needed from those results.

After a bit of searching I have managed to get remote printing to my cups server to work.
I reference 2 documents that helped me resolve this issue.
My searches were specific to my Brother hl1240 laser printer, Arch and cups but I think the resolution is general enough to help others who may have a different model of printer.

    4.   Install the Foomatic scripts.
(If you are using a native CUPS Raster driver, or are using a PostScript printer with a PPD from your printer vendor, you probably do not need Foomatic and should skip this step). Download foomatic-rip and foomatic-gswrapper:
    cd /usr/bin
    wget http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic-rip
    wget http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic-gswrapper
    chmod 755 foomatic-rip foomatic-gswrapper
    ln -s /usr/bin/foomatic-rip /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip
The location of the CUPS filter directory may differ on other installations; look around for it. Also, be sure that your Perl interpreter is in /usr/bin (if not, edit the first line of the scripts).
    http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 03203.html
Here's what solved this for me. I browsed
    http://linuxprinting.org/cups-doc.html and notice the following:
    "Download foomatic-rip and foomatic-gswrapper."
Well, Arch only seems to supply foomatic-gswrapper, not foomatic-rip. When I
attempted to install the Arch foomatic-filters package, it complained,
saying foomatic-gswrapper is already contained in filesystem, with no
mention at all of foomatic-rip. The foomatic package also failed to install
    foomatic-rip.
So I downloaded foomatic-rip from the above web site, copied it to /usr/bin,
where foomatic-gswrapper lives. Then I followed the next set of
instructions in the above mentioned document:
    chmod 755 foomatic-rip foomatic-gswrapper
    ln -s /usr/bin/foomatic-rip /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip
I was never able to use the http://localhost:631 interface to get printing to work even after:
[1] installing foomatic-rip and foomatic-gswrapper in the proper directory
[2] running chmod to make them executable
[3] creating the link as in the above quote
    [4] running /etc/rc.d/cups restart
Setting up remote printing with kprint in administrative mode works very well, though.
This seems to be somthing that needs to be addressed in future releases ( I'm running 0.7.2) or maybe it was fixed in 0.8, though I have not seen mention of it.
Hopefully this will help someone else with a similar problem.

  • Can't print pdf via CUPS / Samba

I have a printer set up on a Linux server, which is shared in an office of Windows machines. It works flawlessly, I can print anything except for pdf files. On the client side there are no visible error messages or anything, but nothing happens, and no trace of the printing command in CUPS logs.
Locally, from the Linux machine pdf's can be printed without any problem, but I can't do that via network from Windows machines.

Operating system?  Reader version?  Can you post a screenshot of that unavailable option?

  • HELP! canon ip1800 printer stops after cups update

    Hi All,
After the recent cups update to 1.4.1-1, my little canon pixma ip1800 printer does not work.
I had used a couple of old debian packages to get the printer working when I first bought it: cnijfilter-common and the cnijfilter-ip1800. By using the deb2targz utility to unpack the debs, I was able to just write a short shell script to install the driver, which has worked well for ages.
I downloaded the AUR cnijfilter packages for this printer, installed or built all the dependencies, removed the old debian based printer driver and installed the AUR packages.
However, after a reboot, when I used the cups admin page (http://localhost:631) and tried to install the pixma ip1800, I keep getting the same error:
    Bad device-uri "cnij_usb:/dev/usb/lp0"
I just don't understand why the AUR driver is not working, both parts built ok-any ideas?
I need this printer working again! Help.
    Cheers for any help.

I have the same printer. In addition to the steps outlined in the news entry I had to delete the printer from the cups admin panel and re-add it. Of course you'll have to redo any customizations you made to the ppd file so before you do this you may want to make a backup of that printer's ppd file (ie. /etc/cups/ppd/ Canon_iP1800_series.ppd ) to reference later.

  • On Mac OS 10.5, can't print to Linux CUPS printing server

We attached a USB printer to a Linux server, which is CUPS1.3.8 installed.
The printer is Epson Stylus CX5900.
Printing from another Linux with CPUS is OK.
But I can NOT print from my MacOSX10.5 system.
I tried IPP, SMB, no success.
Visit the http://127.0.0.1:631 on Mac, the CUPS on Mac even can not discovery the printer shared by Linux server.
If I add added the printer as samba on MacOS, it will report
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/rastertoescp.app/Contents/MacOS/ras tertoescp failed
I see many users report printing issues on MacOSX10.5 on the Internet.
    What's the matter?
As I know, MacOSX10.4 can print to printer on Linux CUPS server.

Slow down a bit and think this through.
CUPS on linux is nearly identical to CUPS on OS X - but there is no Mac-to-Mac Apple proprietary print sharing. Rather, on linux you are sharing the printer using standard printing protocols. Just like on the Mac (when using the standard protocols like Windows/SMB or IP printing), linux print queues expect postscript input. Try using a generic postscript driver from the mac.
And when you add the printer via Windows Printing or IP > LPD or IPP, you will need to know the queue name for that printer from the linux box. (one computer with one IP address can have multiple printers - so what's the additional address info to print to your desired printer? - queue name.)

How do you reconnect to wireless printer without having to restart mbp?

I thought the word "reconnect" would have triggered an answer.
Epson PX730WD on home network, SKY UK Sagem Router
After switching printer back on iPhone 4s can still print, MBP says printer idle.
When send print, queue says printer not connected.
Hence question on how to "reconnect"

  • Is there any way to download/print/export the CUP Change Log?

Does anyone know if there is a way to export, download, print, etc. the CUP Change Log report?  We are on GRC 5.3 SP13.
We have just started an audit review and the Auditors are asking for a report of all changes made since 10/1/2010.  I can generate it on the Configuration/Change Log/Search Change Log screen but it doesn't seem to have any export/print options.
If this is not possible, does anyone know what tables make up the Change Log?  I may be able to give them a report off of the tables.
    Thanks.

    Hi Bob,
by default there is no export feature for that one.
To find the right table I only see that you would need to query the tables for one of the entries to find the right one as there is no official DB structure published.

I've had problems with the print queues in 10.4.x not taking print jobs after the server is restarted. Do a port scan on the server to see if port 515 is open. If it isn't then try restarting the print service on the server. Port scan the server again and see if port 515 is open. If it is open now try printing. I also had problems with ipp printing so have reverted all my clients to LPR. Some client machines I have switched to direct ip printing to the printer. The print queues in 10.4.x haven't been very reliable. I hope this helps.

  • Can I reprint a completed print job from CUPS?

I recently printed a document that I cannot access anymore. I need to reprint it and I can see the job in CUPS but there is no option to restart the job. I need to at least be able to open it, if I can't reprint it I can take a screen shot or something..

IN the print qeue you can select Hide/Show print jobs. Select Show and it will list all past print jobs. Highlight the print job you want and Reprint/Resume the job.

    Hi people,
I have forms 11g and i'm trying to print reports directly to a printer that is installed on the server in CUPS via samba. I can print to my printer from os. Example, i open a pdf and it prints. In oracle reports, i run the report successfully and it prints but in blank. The report is well created in reports cache. Anyone know what can i do?
p.s: don't know if i got it right placing my question here...Maybe in the reports forum?

The problem seems to be Oracle Forms or Report related.

  • Unable to print: /usr/libexec/cups/backend/dnssd failed HELP!!!

    Hi Guys,
I am on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.7.3, and until some time ago I was being able to print on a HP Laserjet P1102w shared over ethernet from a iMac running OS 10.5.8.
Then something happened (probably as a result of an update) and I can't print on that shared printer any more. The error I get on the printer is that annoying /usr/libexec/cups/backend/dnssd failed, OR the "authentication required" message. The printer works just fine on the iMac...
I tried several fixes posted here and there such as re-setting the printing system and re-adding the printer in both machines, tried to fix it over the CUPS interface, and even tried this guy's approach:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20074767-263/how-to-fix-printers-not-workin g-in-os-x-10.6.8/?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=MacFixIt
    Unfortunately nothing worked.
    I noticed two weird things:
    1) When I try to change the settings in the cups interface at the iMac, it won't let me apply the changes, it's like it is locked...
    2) When I pull out the console at the MacBook, the log for the time the error comes out is:
kernel: IOSurface buffer allocation size is zero
Can someone please give me a hint of what's going on? This is nerve wrecking.
    Many thanks!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Mac OS 8.6 Cursor Frozen after print driver install and restart.

Installed Epson SC 980 Print driver on Mac OS 8.6.  After install, I was prompted to restart the computer.  Upon restart the window that contained the "Installer" button remains onscreen and the cursor is frozen.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Strange. Starting up with Extensions Off is supposed to prevent most extensions, including all 3rd-party software, and anything in the Startup Items folder from loading.
Can you tell if it is an app itself which is running? Or is it a window for a disk image or something similar?
You can also try resetting the PRAM while booting with Extension Off, just in case some non-valid instruction got set in PRAM (that should be a no-no for software, but mistakes do happen).
To do that, restart or boot. Immediately press the Command-Option-P-R keys, keep them held down until you've heard a total of three sets of startup chimes. Then release those keys and hold down Shift, keeping it held down until the desktop appears. If you have control over the machine then, you can do some hunting for the Epson software that's causing the issue and get rid of it.
Next level of user control to try is booting to a CD. If you have an OS Install CD, such as one for OS 8.6, which is valid for that machine, try booting the machine to the CD. This should render any software on the hard drive inert, and thus give you an opportunity to hunt the culprit down and remove it.

  • After a sucessfull install, why am I receiving the "This document could not be printed", and "There are no pages selected to print" errors after a restart?

I have ran into this issue a few times and I don't think the reinstall is the problem.  I have some End Users who are telling me they can't print from the IE.  Our environment uses IE8 to print forms.  I will install the application ( Adobe Reader XI ) and it will work fine for that day.  Once they restart, the errors appear and they can no longer print.  Has anyone had any experience with this?

Two things to try: open Adobe Reader | Edit | Preferences
Documents: change 'View documents in PDF/A mode' to Never
Security (Enhanced): uncheck 'Enable Protected Mode at Startup'
