Printing Success with Aperture 1.5.2 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180

With so many "hit-and-miss" posts regarding printing, I thought I'd post my result with Aperture 1.5.2 and my newly-acquired HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
Firstly, I have my monitor calibrated using ColorVision's Spyder Express. It's a cost-effective solution to monitor calibration and what I see on the screen is what I'm seeing in the print. I calibrate weekly.
Secondly, I'm using HP's Advanced Photo Glossy Paper for prints. HP provides the ICC profiles for their papers (and thus far, they seem to be dead-on accurate).
Thirdly, and I believe this is where issues can occur, is to set, via the Print Driver, color management as Application Managed. This bypasses the default of allowing the printer to manage color for you. This allows Aperture to use the ICC profile of the printer and calculate the proper color "conversion".
Finally, via the Apple's support article on optiziming print (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302821) save the customized printer setup for a specified print size, paper, etc.
I have made 20 prints thus far and all have come out satisfactory. The only "tip" I'd make is that I noticed the gamma setting in the print dialogue is ideally set at 1.15. Otherwise, the print seems to be a bit dark.
PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   4 Gigs RAM, CalDigit S2VR Duo 1TB

I just got a B9180 too so thought I would try printing from Aperture. As you suggested I set Gamma to 1.15 - but I still feel the prints are a bit dark. Tried 1.20 but that looked identical to 1.15!

  • Printing problem with Photoshop CS 6 extended and HP printer

Hi all, long time browser, first time poster.
This is a weird issue, it should be noted from the first that I only have weird computer issues. I work at a technical High School where we have the whole Adobe CS6 Extended suite installed. We are running it under a fully patched version of Windows 7 and all the CS6 updates have been applied on 25 machines that all have the same issue. The problem is that when the students go to print to our HP Color Laser jet CP6015DN, the job can been seen loading into the queue, it races up to about 45MB, then sort of strolls to load the rest of the document, usually about 59 to 75 MB's in size. Then I watch the message go to processing, the front panel of the printer says processing, then the print job disappears from the printer queue and the printer and there is no print out. I printed out the usage job log and it shows none of the failed attempts to print and I check the event log page which does not show the errors either.
Looks like a bad printer driver, right? So I download the new HP Universal printer driver, I normally do not do the Universal driver route as so many of my older printers have problems with it, but the CP6015DN seems to have trouble accessing the extended tray 5 with the specific drivers, but I have the same printing issue with the new Universal driver and the PS driver. So I wander through the HP manual and it suggests using profiles to print to the printer and move the color handling from Printer Manages Colors to Photoshop manages colors and I track down the ICC profiles for the printer on the HP site as the link in the book is dead, so try the CP6015srgb_d50.icc, CP6015_cmyk_d50.icc and CP6015.icc, I try all of these profiles with the newest PS printer driver and the same error, goes to the printer and into the bit bucket. Still no printout or error message.
Strange thing is that if I do a test print, it prints fine, if I open a tif file in Photoshop, it prints fine, now the teacher says if they print to the Xeorx 7760 in the next room, it also prints out fine. It should be noted that we had so many issues with configuring the Xerox and adjusting controls it was the reason we purchased a HP proofing printer in the first place. But the next door lab is all Apple, which doesn't seem to have this issue. So I open the test document and save it as a PDF file instead the native Photoshop format, and it prints fine, which from what I've been reading on the internet may be the preferred way of printing proofs, I don't know, I've never really used Photoshop, but the teacher says this isn't an acceptable fix and the students should be expected to manage a number of revisions saved to PDF format, me I just go up a number at the end of the file name for every correction when editing documents.
Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Yes, Photoshop is up to date at Version 13.0.6.  I have even gone so far as to uninstall CS 6 and put CS 5 back on and still the same thing.  This is really frustrating, the people at Canon try to be helpful but wind up saying it's an Adobe problem and of course you can't talk to real people anymore about CS 6.  My research on the Internet has turned up nothing so I'm stuck.

  • Anyone printing with HP Photosmart Pro B9180?

Has anyone been successfully printing with their HP Photosmart Pro B9180 after upgrading to Leopard? I am considering buying one of these printers but only if I am sure that it will work with Leopard as a network printer.
    Thanks for any comments.

I haven't printed a lot yet, but have run a few test prints on my B9180 under Leopard and have been getting very good results, comparable to those I got printing under Tiger.
So far my tests have been restricted to printing from Adobe Lightroom and onto HP Advanced Glossy paper, but I haven't seen any problems yet. I hope to be trying some other papers and applications over the next few days.
Note: The print dialog has been completely reorganized under Leopard, and some of the options you need to adjust to get good prints have been relocated to places that aren't obvious, so it pays to poke around.
    Jim,
Did your monitor appear any different after installing Leopard?
I did manage to pick my way through the new dialog boxes and found everything that I needed but the color is bad.

  • HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Printing Blank Sheets

I have a HP Photosmart Pro B9180 printer. I joined two scanned images into one photo and saved it as a .tif file. I then resized it to 8x10 and it printed fine. When I resized it again to print it as an 12x16 on 13x19 paper, the printer will only spit out blank sheets. I took it to a mini lab and they couldn't print it either.

  • Photosmart Pro B9180 printer

I bought my first TI-55 calculator from HP in high school.  Since then I have purchased numerous calculators, printers, scanners, computers, iPAQ’s for home as well untold printers for my practice.  I have always thought that HP made good products and stood behind their products.  When my Photosmart Pro B9180 printer (MY66M1101V / Q5734A) required new ink cartridges last week, I ordered new ink cartridges and printheads from HP.  After I installed them, the printer cycled through its closed loop printhead calibration and allowed me to print one picture and the produced the error code “00C78475”.  I contacted HP service chat on 2/17 and was advised by Brooklyn S. that the code was a hardware error and that the best thing to do would be to replace the printer and that I could not get refunded for the cartridges and printheads I had just purchased from HP.  He offered to sell me a new printer which was not anything like this printer at a discount price that was identical to that printer’s price on Amazon.com.  He also offered to sell me a refurbished Photosmart Pro B9180 for $559.00.  He said he would refer the case to a case manager.  I have not heard back from a case manager.  I called HP support on 1/18/2011 and spoke with Manoja (reference # 804 770 0954).  He referred me to the ISB TEAM, HP, 11311 CHINDEN BLVD. BLD. #7, MAILSTOP 475, POST J3, Boise, Idaho 83714.  He said I might be able to return the unused cartridges and printheads to them but could not provide a phone number or further contact information for the ISB-Team.   I would like a solution that allows me to print archival photos.  If there is no way to make this printer work again, I would like to return the opened but unused cartridges for a credit or a refund if possible.

  • I have faint but noticeable horizontal lines on prints from my Photosmart Pro B9180.

When printing grey scale pictures on my Photosmart Pro B9180, I can see faint horizontal lines not quite 1/4 apart.  I have aligned the heads and cleaned them 3 times and the lines remain.  The Head analysis indicates that three of my heads are in fair condition and one is in good condition.  I also notice when the print out after head cleaning is on glossy paper that multiple lines appear in virtually all the color swatches.  I have not received a "replace printhead" message, but I'm beginning to thing that is the next step.  Any insights?

This document may help. I have a feeling the manual cleaning section may be applicable:

  • Printing Panoramas with Aperture

I've run into a roadblock trying to print panoramas with my Epson 2400. If I select A4 - Banner - Borderless as my paper, Aperture restricts me to an 8.5 by 11 (roughly) print. If I select custom size, I can set the proper size (in this case, 8 by 22) but the Epson print driver won't accept it. It thinks I am sending it an order for printing on sheet paper, and responds that I have roll paper installed. Has anyone been able to successfully print panoramas on roll paper using a combination of Aperture, Leopard, and an Epson R2400?

    Hi Jarno
That is what I've done, except that I am exporting to Lightroom. I've reported this to Apple as a "bug" (it seems likely that most people using roll paper want to go longer than standard A4 format)

  • Printing problems with Aperture

I just switched from Windows (long story, many years) to an Intel iMac 20, with Aperture pre-installed. I had a Canon PIXMA iP 6000D printer; all prints had a yellow cast. I bought an HP Photosmart 7160; all prints have a yellow cast. I have done a format and re-install of OS X and all software. I have installed my Aperture software on another iMac 20 at the store; with my printer and the store's printer the prints had a yellow cast. I took my computer to the store and printed on their printer; all prints had a yellow cast. I get the same results printing from Photoshop CS2 for Mac or from Preview. I have tried several USB cables. My monitor is calibrated with a SpyderPro 2. Prints directly from a memory chip in the printer are fine. I've tried all the adustments in the print setup; no help. I'm working on the sliders now, but with seven sliders with 100 possible settings on each I think that's seven to the 100th power possible settings. Both printers work fine with my Windows computers.
I've exhausted all the available Apple support. Anyone have any ideas?

    iMac 20   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well, to reiterate, I am using the HP printer as there is only room for one printer on my desktop. I am using HP paper, the "Advanced" type which is bar coded so that the printer recognizes the paper type and sets the appropriate defaults. I have also tried other HP papers, and selected them from the printer dialog. I have tried setting the paper type manually with the "Advanced" paper. I have tried printing with all the defaults left alone.
When I said that I had tried every print option in the printer dialog sequence, I meant that in the printer dialog I had tried each of the paper types, each of the color options, each option under HP Colorsmart, several types of HP printer paper with the proper option selected. Under ColorSync, there are only two options here. One is "Standard" and the other is "in Printer" which is greyed out.
Go down the print dialog. I have tried every option. Under "Paper Type, Quality" I have tried every option for paper type, quality, and color. I have done this systematically, using all available combinations.
I don't know how else to describe the process Apple and I have tried to use to try to repair my problem. Name an option--I have printed using it.
I tried the "sliders" as a possible way of altering the output from the computer to the printer, as I had exhausted all other possibilities, and if I could find the magic combination I could set it as the default and all my prints would be
affected by those settings and print correctly. They appear in the printer dialog from Aperture. My photos print correctly if I copy the file to a Compact Flash chip and place it into the printer slot and print directly.
Pardon me if I seemed snappish. I bought the iMac specifically for photographic work, have had it for a couple of months, have made several hundred prints, have exhausted support from Apple, and am grasping at straws. I have 8 GB of photos from my last trip which remain unprinted. Shortly before the trip I did two wedding shoots which were quite successful, printed from Photoshop CS2 under Windows. All my current photos print acceptably on this printer from my Windows computer. They are not acceptable printed from Adobe CS2 for Mac.
Can I be more specific in what I have tried? Do you have a suggestion for something for me to try? Apple and I are grasping at straws, and would appreciate any help you can give.

  • Issues with Aperture 3.3.1 and LX-5 raw files

Having used my Lumix LX-5 raw files successfully with previous versions of Aperture, after loading some into V3.3.1 this morning, the initial preveiws were fine, and then I watched everyone change from a normal well exposed image to vertially all black with a very dark green colour cast!
No amount of adjustment via the inspector tools wil fix them.
Anyone got any suggestions or solutions?
    Thanks

    Two things to try:
Force the generation of new previews by holding down the option key while selecting "Update Preview"
If this only happened after you upgraded to 10.7.4 and worked well before, then register your camera with the lauch services database - see this post by Alan Roseman:This solved my questionRe: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish, but read the follow up posts (the lsregister command) as well, on how it is supposed to work and how to correct the typos.
Added: if that does not help, try to remove the raw presets from ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/RawDecodePresets.plist

  • Printing issues with Aperture 3 - color management

I just made three prints of the same images, two with Aperture 3 that turned out very dark and off color, almost as it they were printed without color management or double profiles. I then printed the third by exporting the image to CS4 and printing with the same settings (rendering intend, printer settings and custom printer profile) and that print looks fine. Has anyone else run into similar problems with A#? I did not have this issue with Aperture 2.
    Thanks,
    Message was edited by: pcalvin

I print on an Epson 2880 with Lyson inks and custom profiles. In Aperture 2 it worked perfectly, with exactly the same settings as for printing Photoshop - using the laboratory prescribed settings:perceptual and no black point compensation in Photoshop, and Adobe RGB Gamma 2.2 in the Print settings.
Using the same profile and settings with Aperture 3, the colours are way, way off - exactly as described.
I then tried with Aperture 3 turning off the Adobe RGB setting, so there was no colour space adjustment in the Print setting. This gave a slightly better result, but rather dead and slightly blue.
I ran some tests with the GretagMacbeth colour chart used in preparing the profiles, which confirmed the above but also shows a lack of sharpness when printing from Aperture 3, and a blue border on three sides of the image - even though the border was set to 0.00. I have checked the printer head adjustments and run the test chart through Photoshop again to verify these are Aperture 3 artefacts.
Unless this is resolved, it renders Aperture completely useless! (I have tried reinstalling printer drivers, to no effect).

  • Borderless printing with Adobe reader or acrobat and HP Officejet Pro 8100

    Hello,
When printing borderless with my Pro 8100 the printed pdf moves about 2mm to te left on the paper. (White vertical strip on the right side is the result and on the left side something is missing!).
What causes the problem seems to be that the HP Pro 8100 printsoftware makes the A4-format a littlebit larger (214,55 x 300,91) than an actual A4-format (210,00 x 297,00) when you choose borderless printing.
Therefore, I suppose that the pdf shoud be centered before printing. Adobe reader doesn't seem to have the possiblity to center the page however.
    Any tips?

The borderless printing option is intended to print photo's on photo paper.  When printing borderless the print is slightly oversized to eliminate (or reduce) to chance for white edges due to media skey.  Depending on your operating system you may have a setting in the Advanced tab of the driver for Overspray, set this to minimum and see if it helps.

  • Printing Problem with Epson LX-300+ii and LX-310 in Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit

    I recently installed Windows Server 2012 R2 64-Bit.
We have Printer Epson LX-300+ii and LX-310 (dot-matrix) that we share among users. Each user access the Server using Remote Desktop. From previous experience with Windows Server 2008, I knew that these printers will be problematic, especially regarding
    the Easy Print driver.
And I was right, using the Easy Print driver, I got the following result:
And so, I did manual mapping & disable the "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first". Haha, what a surprise, I got the following result:
And so I uninstalled the printer driver, and install it again, thinking that I might chose a wrong driver, but.... same result. I know for sure that I chose the correct driver.
Next, I tried connecting the printer DIRECTLY to the server. Log-in to the Server directly,
not using Remote Desktop. And tried printing again, haha... really... what a surprise... I got the same problem here !!!
So now I know the problem is not the Easy Print driver, not mapping or registry problem either. It's the print driver. This is SUPER FRUSTRATING, I tried the same driver from the same CD in Windows 8.1 64-Bit with no problem. I tried it too in Windows 7
32-Bit with no-problem either. But somehow, this driver is problematic in Windows Server 2012 R2.
Any help? Anybody else bump into this same problem ? I'm close to giving up, been spending too much time figuring out this damn thing.
    Andy

    Hi Bulent Sahin,
Thank you for your reply, I tried IBM Graphics driver, but the result is equally as bad. But your answer inspire me to try different drivers. And so, the closest & best driver that I could use now is EPSON ESC/P 9pin V4 Class Driver
It's not as good as I would expect, but at least now, it's acceptable & readable. I can't believe that I'm the only one who have this problem
    Thank you Mr. Sahin

  • Printing differences with LR4+ between Windows 8 and iMac

Hi. I have using my iMac running the latest version of OS-X with LR printing currently to an Epson XP-600 with pretty good results, that is, the print matches the screen with few exceptions.
I recently installed my second allowable copy of LR4 to a new HP laptop running Windows 8 and the prints, using the same photos, are way off both in darkness and in color shift. The Printer interfaces look different but many of the options are the same. I currently let the printer control the prints (with either computer) but tried separate profiles as well. No real change. Here is the important part... The only other program I have on the new Laptop that can print photos is Microsoft PowerPoint and the photos printed with PowerPoint are identical to the photos printed in LR on the iMac! So... somehow the Windows LR is changing the parameters.
I have compared settings between the two computers (only one opened at a time) over and over and ran through a set of ink cartridges trying to match either LR/iMac or Windows PowerPoint to the LR Windows photos to no avail. Am I missing something obvious? Why don't the LRs print the same with the same settings regardless of the operating system? Both are 64 bit computers. Any thoughts would be appreciated... thanks! Andy

Thank you for replying, Rikk. However I respectfully disagree with you. I wasn't comparing the printed photo to the laptop monitor but to the other computer's printed photo (and to the iMac's monitor by extension). Big difference. I deliberately let the printer manage color because with the iMac, the print matched the monitor without profile control. In Windows, I also let the printer manage color so LR, let alone the monitor, should have no influence on color, much like the PowerPoint print as you mentioned. The printer, if printer settings are the same, should produce the same print in OS-X or Windows 8. The PowerPoint print matching the LR print on the Mac proves this to be true IMHO.
To put it another way, I'm not trying to match the Windows print to the Laptop monitor, which is not only uncalibrated but somewhat irrelevant. The two monitors look nothing alike with regard to color. Neither monitor should actually influence the print when compared to the other print using identical printer settings with LR set to printer control.
Please do not think I'm trying to be contentious here, I'm not, but to put it a third way, If I print the photo from another program (iPhoto) on the iMac, it looks identical to the print in LR on the iMac. Because the printer is in control. On the Windows computer, printing in and out of LR, with printer settings the same, do not. That's what I'm trying to find out.
Finally with respect to your last sentence, that's my whole point. I believed I had turned off color awareness in LR on both computers. I don't need it. Apparently, I didn't turn it off on the Windows computer and I would love to know why it didn't go off?
    Thanks, Andy
PS You deserve an explanation as to why I use the printer control and no profiles. The answer is somewhat serendipitous: With this particular printer (and I've had many), when the printer is set to manage the color, the prints, for whatever reason, very closely match the iMac monitor (which is calibrated), even moreso than with printer color OFF and ICC profiles employed. I've tried them all. I only use one kind of paper. If I call up a photo of my grandchildren, the print matches the iMac display close enough for my needs. What I see is what I print. Why change it?

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected.
