Printing to older LaserJet Printer via Ethernet Cable

Hi. I've read many posts that don't quite get as basic as I need. I am trying to get an old HP LaserJet 5 printer I love running on my mac running OSX 10.4.11. The printer has an ethernet port (no USB) and so does my mac. Should be simple right? WRONG! I downloaded and installed the correct driver from HP, connected the printer to my mac with the ethernet cable. Rebooted and tried to add the printer via the Printer Utility. I THINK the printer was supposed to be recognized in some way automatically in the add process since it is connected via a cable and turned on, but isn't. I also, following a post here, enabled AppleTalk with built-in Ethernet. Can someone please give me a simple step by step to add this printer? Do I truly need some adapter to use the direct Ethernet to Ethernet connection? That seems crazy to me!

That printer is too old to support Bonjour, so it will not be recognized automatically. You also need to set an IP address for the printer, the gateway address of your router, and the network mask. This is done via the printer's front panel. To add the printer requires configuring it in the Printer Setup Utility as an LPR printer. You will need to enter the IP address of the printer and an optional queue name of your choice (not more than 11 alpha-numeric characters plus the underline. No spaces.)
The IP address you choose for the printer should be one that is within the DHCP range of your router (for example, 192.168.0.2-199 or 10.0.1.2-199.) Preferable to choose an address somewhere in the middle that isn't likely to be used by the router for any other devices.

  • Print to HP LaserJet 4mp via ethernet on Snow Leopard

Well, after tons of research I have ended up printing thru my OLD mac via shared printer on the network. But I would hope there is a better way. I have a Mac Pro, 10.6.3 connected to a HP LaserJet 4MP via ethernet router via RJ45 cables, works great on ALL my other equipment, even the PC but refuses to show up in Snow Leopard. I tried the standard stuff like giving it an IP address that would match my current network settings, no luck, tried Asante, no luck. I realize it's hard to support a decade old printer but what's all the GREEN CRAP about if I have to keep throwing away equipment that still works, and beautifully. Had to ditch my quad PPC unit because of adobe. Now I can't print. HP was no help, apple support is WAY too expensive since I bought my machine used and they won't sell me an apple care agreement. Anybody have any more suggestions? MIO must stand for missing instant output. ANY suggestions would be appreciated as I've tried all the ones in the discussion forums so far.

Since the 4MP is a PostScript printer, there should be any number of print servers that work with it. It might even work with your router. But it is not going to just "show up" on your computer like it did with AppleTalk. You will need to provide the computer with all the information it needs for an IP connection.
You can get help with that here, but you need to provide information, like the model of the router.

I have an HP LaserJet 8150N that I use for my work and I have had this printer for ever and it is one heck of a work horse! I am trying to get it connected via ethernet cable directly to my iMac. I always had this printer connected via a network so I don't know if I am able to connect directly with a cable since it is a network printer. I have tried to reconfigure the printer using the JetDirect menu giving it a new IP address but still no luck. If anyone could help me through this issue I would appreciate it.

Second, seeing "connecting" and connection failed is normal. You must click on "Connect As" in the Finder window and then enter the username and password for the admin account on the other computer. That should fix things.
    Thanks for responding.
When does clicking on "Connect As" happen in the process above?
    After step six? Seven?
    After the connection has failed?
Is this the FInder window that shows the icon of the computer you want to copy the file from?
You should see "Connect As" in the Finder near the top right of the window as shown below:

Why can’t I print from my iPhone 4 to my brother 8890dw printer which is connected to my time capsule/network via ethernet cable???  My iPhone does not even locate my printer, even though I have no problem printing from my Mac to the same printer.

You would need an airprint enabled printer or an app that proides printing function.

i  have c4780 hp printer, i have installed it on laptop via ethernet. All works fine.
If i unplugg network cable on laptop and use only wireless to connect on my network, the printer cannot print.
    I have a dlink 2740b wireless router.

i have try to install on other pc via wifi but result is the same.
just i plug the network cable the printer work immedialtly..
    Why?
    Thanks

I am confused.  Is the printer connected to your router via ethernet or you computer via ethernet?  If to the router, how was it initially connected (wired or wireless) when you set it up?
What operating system(s) are you using?

  • Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?

Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?
I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.

No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users.

  • Connecting HP Laserjet 500N using ethernet cable and router

I had my HP Laserjet 5000N connected to my wireless router via ethernet cable. It worked fine. But then I changed routers and can't remember how to reestablish the connect.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    no problems.
There is a priority order when multiple networking interfaces are available.
Ethernet is higher than Airport in the order.
If both ethernet and Airport interfaces are connected to the network, then ethernet becomes the primary networking interface.
If nothing is plugged into the ethernet port, then Airport will get control.

  • Time capsule to tether a DVD player via Ethernet cable?

I've bought a new time capsule for my main wireless network. Can I use an old time capsule to connect to the network and then tether a DVD player via Ethernet cable?

Yes, but keep in mind that the "Ethernet" connection from the old Time Capsule to the DVD player will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection between the two Time Capsules.....assuming you plan to connect the older TIme Capsule wirelessly to the network.
If you plan to connect the old Time Capsule to the new using a wired Ethernet connection, then things will be just fine.

  • How to migrate PowerBook G4 Tiger to new MacBook Pro 15" Lion via ethernet cable? Migration Assistant to old to update, apparently.

How to migrate PowerBook G4 Tiger to new MacBook Pro 15" Lion via ethernet cable? Migration Assistant to old to update, apparently.

Ah, a Powerbook. I miss that.  Anyways, I believe that the Powerbook G4 has an Firewire 400/800 port.  Why don't you do that?  It's fast, and you don't have to set up one of those funky reverse wire ethernet cables.  I wouldn't use Migration Assistant, but that's just me.  Too many issues.  I'd start up your brand new MacBook Pro and during the setup assistant, it'll ask you to transfer data from an older Mac.  Using firewire with a Target Disk Mode, it's pretty fast.
If you have already opened up your new Mac and are using it, then use Migration assistant, but also with the Firewire (preferably 800).

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable.  The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great.  The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks.  How do I remedy this, please?

What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.
No luck I can show you manual method.

You can connect them via ethernet cable. It will work fine.
No special software needed on either side.
What is it you are trying to do? Share files? Printers? Internet?

I have a 3rd party hard drive with movies on it ,it is connected to my airport extreme. The AE is connected to my tv via ethernet cable. Can I stream my movies to the Tv ?

    Not without a player..
The AE is a dumb file server.. the hard disk you plug in is an even dumber hard disk.
There are no smarts in this setup.. not even DLNA. So the TV would have to be an extremely smart one to read raw files on a network drive.. none do that I know of.
A solution is WD live TV.. it can read files from just about any file source on network and play them to the TV.
Nothing apple makes will do that.. ATV is a streamer not a media player. Everything in the Apple world is tied up with itunes. So you must have a computer running itunes to use it.
You can download a more generic player for ipad, and put that as part of the network.. but you still need ATV to display the video.
