I'm a former PT user. Here's the comparison between LP and PT. Pro Tools LE is like one of those studios with just a piano and 32 track board and adat. Where Logic Pro is a complete studio with about 6 keyboards and rack modules and effects and a 64 track board.
There's no comparison. Logic's a whole studio where PT LE is basically a mimmic of the tape. Now if you have your own equipment(i.e. third party plug ins and external synths) the PT LE will suffice the rewire setup and midi sync is much better and more stable than LP, but that's all PT Le has over LP.
Logic has taken my music to the next level. Those soft synth plug ins are great. Besides my MPC for drums, I really don't need any other external sounds. I mean you cant compare Logic's synths to PT LE's Reason Adapted and Sample Tank SE.
Pro Tools LE is really not in Logic's class. Some People think LP's a lesser program or in the same class as PT LE because its less expensive. But its really not. What makes PT LE expensive is its hardware that it uses as a XS key. You basically pay for the interface not the program.
You can compare Pro Tools LE to Logic Express. But Pro Tools LE to Logic Pro? C'mon that's like comparing a Pinto to a Lexus.
Oh yeah just look at the price. The only DAW sequencer that rivals LP'S price is Sonar. But Sonar would hit the market at about 800$ then the price would drop to about $500. Logic's hits the market a 1000$ and stays there, demand and customer satisfaction. Its worth way more that 1000$, besides my MPC its the best investment I've made regarding music.
The only thing I miss about PT's is the rewire and bussing. But with all the soft sythns LP has I really don't use Reason that much. I don't really need it.

  • Pro Tools DAE Questions w/ Logic

1 - Are you able to use instrument tracks when running logic on Pro Tools DAE? When I try to create one in that situation, the option is greyed out.
2 - Is there somewhere in the global preferences in logic where you can set up your i/o? I need to be able to change the output settings manually (for example, as opposed to 1-2 being grouped together always...)
Many thanks to anyone who can shed some light.
    Thanks!

"Core Audio" Instruments "talk" to DAE thru Direct
    TDM,
You need to enable direct TDM for them to work with
    DAE....do this in audio hardware...
I don't have DAE system in front of me, if I remember
correctly you make them DTM objects, instead of core
audio objects, (which you set in instrument
parameters).....you set the outputs to DTM outputs,
then you create a aux in DAE which has a DTM input
and a DAE output, which is how you route them into
    the DAE....
I may be forgetting something, but this will get you
    close..
Okay, cool. I will try that, thank you!
So I need to turn on both DAE & TDM in audio hardware setup?

  • Can tracks recorded in Pro Tools be moved into Logic?

I'm orchestrating a song for a friend of mine, who recorded vox and a guitar part in PT. How can I move these into the L8 world?

I'm primarily a Logic user, but I do have access to Pro Tools 7.1.1 LE and a Digi 002. Recently my band recorded drums at a studio via Pro Tools 7.1 and the question of how to get these tracks into Logic without having to remap the track positions came up.
There seems to be three viable solutions I have come across:
    1. Export to OMF (no automation data, or plugins will be transferred, just the sound of the dry tracks and positions of the tracks)
    2. Export to AAF (supposedly the volume automation settings will be transferred as well as the position of the tracks but not plugins)
    3. Bounce to individual tracks and remap them into a Pro Tools or Logic session/project.
I for one love the idea of not having to put together all the drum tracks we recorded back into their positions in either Pro Tools or Logic so option 1 & 2 appeal to me. The problem with Pro Tools is you need an add-on called Digitranslator to export files into OMF and AAF files and that runs about $500. Quite ridiculous if you ask me seeing that most other DAWs have this feature built in. If you do have access to Digitranslator I would give that a try before resorting to bouncing all the individual tracks and remapping them into the DAW of your preference.
However, there seems to be problems exporting crossfades between Pro Tools and Logic while using OMF or AAF formats although I don't have first hand experience exporting files with crossfades between the two DAWs yet. I will have to give that a try sometime soon.

  • Learning Pro Tools (as an experienced Logic User)

Hi. For my course and becuase of how industry standard Pro Tools is i want to start learning how to use it.
Has anyone any advice on tutorials or where to start or just any general advice for me?
    Thanks, Ben

I'm in the same situation, learning both at the same time because I'm trying to decide which way to go first, and I figure that much of the usage of one is applicable to the other, as far as software goes. In my area (Las Vegas) Tower Records just went out of business and I was able to pick up an excellent book "The Complete Pro Tools Handbook" by Jose Valenzuela... normally $50, I got it for $10. HUGE book, only about a year out of date, really takes you through pro tools from the beginning. Another thing I've found about this book is it really comes from an non-computer audio engineering point of view, takes you through the hardware extensively more so than any other book I've read, and is aimed at audio engineers coming from a non-computer pro background. I'm finding it extremely helpful, because non-computer engineering is all hardware-based. I have a couple of fantastic Logic books as well, but they say NOTHING at all about hardware and hooking stuff up and wading through all the various competing gear to accomplish that. Granted Protools has an advantage in that regard with their own hardware, but I've found reading extensive information about protools hardware and what it does in this book is helping me choose hardware for logic as well!
Good luck in your search. I'm sure many major studios HAVE to have BOTH logic and protools in their arsenal.

  • Yet another Logic Vs.Pro Tools question. Please help!!

Hi guys! I just arrive to the world of mac a few days ago, and I couldn't be happier. Now it's time to purchase new audio gear, and I am torn between Logic Studio/Apogee interface, or the Digi 003. I've been a Sonar user for the past couple of years, and before that I was on Cubase.
I love Sonar, but I'm sick of PC's(hence the switch). I need something with good compositional/midi tools, but I also need powerful audio editing. One thing I love about Sonar is the ability to use non-destructive editing in the arrange window. Can the new logic do this? Currently I am leaning towards logic...but I still haven't made a decision. I definitely need drum programming ability, and I'm not sure if Pro Tools le even has a drum map? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Taking just the key points above, Logic will definitely fit the bill better. Logic seems to be a better compositional tool, although PT can also be used for that. Both do SOME non-destructive editing in the arrange windows. Protools has no drum editor at all.
However, PT is still better at audio editing.
It would depend on how much audio editing you plan on doing vs midi/composition.
The above poster is certainly in the ballpark about the add-ons you have to buy with PT just to equal the tools that come with Logic. I would say you'll probably have to spend at least another $1000 on plugin instruments and utility tools (CD burning/mastering) above the cost of PTLE software. Assume you will need at least the Music Production Toolkit in addition to PTLE. You will also want Toast Titanium to burn CDs unless you get Logic w/Waveburner.
The 003 will definitely not sound as good as the Apogee.
I've used PTLE since 1999 and it's great for recording and editing audio, but nothing special for writing and nothing special for midi.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.3 with Pro Tools HD 8.1.1

    Hey guys,
I've been reading all day and hoping I could make this happen but I'm losing hope.
I have an Pro Tools HD 2 system with 8.1.1 and Logic Pro 9.1.3 installed on my computer.
I currently have Logic slaved to pro tools but I can only get sound to come out of the built in output of the speakers which I then record it to pro tools on seperate passes. I'm trying to get my logic instruments to go out seperate audio channels and into seperate audio tracks on Pro Tools.
For example, I want a sound from my exs sampler to be monitored through my pro tools channel 1-2 and a sound from ES1 or some synth to be monitored through channels 3-4.
It would just make things sooooo much easier if this could happen! I also have reason 5 rewired to logic which I wanted to go through logic into pro tools on seperate channels as well.
As of now, I'm using all 3 programs but I have to use just one stereo channel in pro tools to monitor both logic and reason!
Is it possible to assign logic to go out different output channels into different pro tools tracks??????
Thanks much - Oh yeah I'm also on Snow Leopard if that matters.
    Josh

Avid dropped support for Logic TDM in Pro Tools HD 8.0.3. You need Pro Tools HD 8.0.1 if you want to use Logic with TDM hardware. Pro Tools HD 8.0.1 is qualified up to OS 10.5.8. Anything else is untested.
Logic followed suit by dropping the DAE menu in version 9.1 or later (gleamed from reading these forums), but annoyingly did not mention anything in their release notes. 9.0.2 is the last official mention of TDM support.
You can always use eight channels of Avid hardware with CoreAudio. By using aggregate IO you can do what you need to with eight channels. If you want to use DAE TDM, the only guarantee is PT HD 8.0.1, Logic 9.0.2, OS 10.5.8.

  • Importing pro-Tools Commands into Logic

I just started working in Logic today... I mostly work in pro-tools though... anyone know of a place online to find the commands for pro-tools to import into logic? it would help me a lot! Maybe someone already manually did this and can export it to me... Thanks! God bless!

  • Logic Pro plugin performance

I am having more plug-in performance issues with Logic pro 7.2 version. I have a dual 2gig with 4mg of RAM. I am using BFD, Ivory, Trilogy, Hard Core Bass, Chris Hein Guitars, RealGuitar, Motu Symphonic, and MachFive. Even with all tracks frozen, I am having crashes right and left. I have been sending the responses to apple, with and without notes. I never get a response. I not sure they are there. I think they should tell us were the problem is or with what plug-in. Need help… I got out of Pro Tools and moved to Logic Pro because I thought Apple would have a more stable product and I wouldn't have to wait a year after a new OS to get updates. I hope Apple is listening.

I have been working with Logic Pro for about a year with very few problems. I did notices some performance issues start with the 7.2 update. I think the crashes started when I got Hardcore Bass. I have been trying to fine tune Hardcore Bass and have seen some improvements. I have try to add and remove plugins to determine the problem ones, and so far it appears to Hardcore Bass and Chris Hein Guitars.
My real question is why can't Logic tell us more information about a crash i.e. RAM, Plugin or something. I would like to be more helpful in a solution to the problem but I need more information from the application.

  • My Main Logic Pro 7 Problems

    I am new to logic..
    I use a G4 powerbook 1Gb with Mbox.
In Logic there is an error: while trying to synchronize midi and audio.
Something with the SMPTE -I think. How do I fix this?
One other thing. If I record directly on my external hard drive..-will there be a problem with the playback and sound?
Will there a problem with the PCI bus? I read somewhere that I should perhaps move my slot forward.
And finally..Could someone tell me a way to work with logic and pro tools without running into problems with the external interface (Mbox) settings - everytime I open pro tools after being in Logic or the other way around.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hopefully I will get some answers soon.

Hopefully I will get some answers soon.
i am sure you will get loads of answers soon. your syncronization errors can be due to difference in frame rate expected by your interface or by logic. make sure that - as you are in london - they are set to PAL standards ie 25 fps. you can set this in song settings-> syncronization.
it is infact recommended to record onto an external harddrive, as they are faster than your p[owerbook internal drive and in case your system drive is often needed for system related activities. as far as your pci bus is concerned i can't see what problems you are worried about.
as far as problems with protools and logic and mbox, can't help you there except to say if you have logic i don't see the need to use protools anyway. but others may have advice relating to that.
    good luck

  • This or Pro Tools MP?

This mainly goes out to users of both Pro Tools M-Powered and Logic Express. I'm wanting to upgrade from GB. I'm leaning towards PTMP because it's cheaper and the plug-ins. But I've heard it doesn't work very well with OS X 10.4.9.
I've played around with Logic Express and I like it, but I'm unsure of what kind of plug-ins are available (ie RTAS, VST, AU, et cetera).
There's not much for reviews online, just trying to get a feel for if people prefer one over the other, if so why? Thanks!
iMac (PowerPC)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hey fan, welcome to the forum.
I am both a PT user and a Logic user. I stay away from PT unless i HAVE to work in it.
In terms of plugins, MPowered doesn't hold a torch to Logic. Logic uses AU plugins. Its included suite of plugins are almost unanimously regarded in the industry to be the best suite of plugins included with a DAW. I don't use PTMP, I use LE, and i've used it extensively and the plugins don't come anywhere near Logic's plugins. The most important plugins in any DAW in my opinion - the EQ's and compressors - Logic's sound warmer and do much more for you sound than any plugins in the included PT suite.
With upgrading plugins, you can get almost any plugin for Logic that you can for PTMP - except RTAS of course, that's pro tools proprietary format. Anything you want in RTAS you can find a comparable (or most of the time, better) or identical version in AU.
The advantage to having PT is that you learn PT. Even then, I would strongly recommend you get a Pro Tools LE system over an MPowered system any day. M-Audio gear is faulty and of poor quality by nature. Most anyone you talk to around here will strongly recommend staying away from M-audio stuff.
So. . . I'd go with Logic Express. . . but if you really want to go the Pro Tools route - go PTLE. . . PLEASE don't go MPowered.

  • Logic Pro setup assistant?

    Hi,
I'm a long time Pro Tools user, new to Logic.
I'm following a tutorial DVD about Logic Pro and they start by showing a Setup Assistant.
They talk about and show a Logic Setup Assistant, which is a separate program that can be launched from the Preferences window in Logic.
I don't have that. I also searched my computer and no assistant is installed associated with Logic.
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks,
    Alex

I'm answering myself, since I received a reply from the DVD manufacturers. It's because the Tutorial DVD is based on Logic Pro 7, not 8.

  • Problems with MBOX (first version) with new Logic Pro 9 - only Input 1 work

    Hi,
i never had problems with my old MBOX. Since 2 days I switched to Logic Studio 2 and Logic Pro 9. Very nice realease, but: when I create an audio object and choose the inputs in the channel strip for the MBOX, i only get Input 1, no Input 2! When I connect my MBOX in Logic (Audio Preferences) and launch with my started Logic, both Inputs are avaiable and both are working correctly. But never after having started Logic 9...
    Any ideas?
I never had this problem with Pro 7 or 8.

  • Using MBOX 2 with Logic Pro 8.

I have downloaded the core audio files, and I am stuck. I'm not really sure how to open it up in Logic, and control it. If anyone can give some advice, or post a tutorial that would be great. Also, the MBOX2 seems to only power on every other time I plug it in. Its very inconsistent to power up. Any explanations on that? Thanks for all the help.

When I switched from PC/Pro Tools LE to iMac/Logic, I tried to work with my MBox2 but gave up. It's just not well suited for working with Logic. I bought the Duet for $500 and it works great and sounds much better than the MBox2. Better pres and converters. I'll upgrade to an Ensemble soon, but for $500, if all you need is two channels, the Duet is a great way to go. Also, latency is much better with Duet than with MBox, at least in my experience. I keep my buffer at 256 and can barely discern latency at all while getting all the plug-in power I need. If I need to truly knock out latency, I can still go down one or two more buffer sizes.

    Here's wjosten's response:
The tool to flash the logic board is only "officially" available to Apple or AASPs. The OP needs to take the computer back to the AASP that did the work & have them fix things.
Do you have a an Apple certified technician nearby?  If not, I don't think you have other options. You could email the people who did the work for you, and ask them to figure out how to help you.

  • Logic Express 8 and OSX 10.6.5 Problems...

    Hi,
I just did a fresh install of all of my software on my iMac.
Previously had it running 10.6.4 and everything an fine.
Now that I've reinstalled and upgraded to 10.6.5 Logic Express won't work.
Anyone else having this problem? Am I just ging to have to upgrade to 9?
I don't really want to as I mainly use Pro Tools and just use logic for drum machines and synths...
    Anyway! Any help is appreciated!

I'm running 10.6.5 and LE 8 and it works for me. Of course I have a new imac that came installed with 10.6.5 and I installed LE on it. Maybe you can re-install LE. But hopefully there is another solution. I too don't really want to upgrade to LE 9 if I don't have to.
