Probably stupid question - Windows background in black

This is probably a stupid question for longtime Mac users... I'm trying to adjust to this OS... I recently 'upgraded' to a MacBookPro from a PC, and have been very happy with my decision so far. However, when using windows I ran themes that displayed windows backgrounds in black with a lighter font for text, which is my preference. How do I do this with Leopard? I couldn't find any options or info on Apple site using Search.

Well, I use Arial for just about everything. You can set that in Safari/Prefrences, or, if say you are using Text Edit, you can press Command + T and that will prompt the Mac FontBook and you can view all the fonts available and just go through them until you see one that best fits your needs.
Since you are new to Mac there is something to be aware of. Do not change any "system fonts" as it can cause utter mayhem. There's an alert box you can set up to avoid any mishaps;
*If you change fonts used by Mac OS X
If you try to change or remove fonts used to display onscreen text on your computer, an alert message will appear. You should not change system fonts unless you’re experienced with fonts and know how the change will affect your system.
You can turn off system font alerts in Font Book preferences.
To turn off system font alerts:
Open Font Book and choose Font Book > Preferences.
Deselect the checkbox labeled “Alert me if system fonts change.”

  • Probably Stupid Question

    Hello all,
what I would like to ask is ... on my G5 ... can I install both FCP5 and FCP HD and use both??
    Thanking you in advance!

Are you asking if you can keep multiple versions of the software on the same system? If so, maybe. The easiest way is to have multiple startup disks. If you have a second internal drive it's a breeze. If you have only one internal drive, you can partition it or use an external firewire drive as a startup drive. I seem to remember a post saying if you renamed the earlier version of fcp before doing an install you could have multiple versions of fcp on your system. There might be problems caused by this method. Do a search here and see if you can find any references to this or perhaps someone else will pipe up.
This is not a stupid question and your subject line will limit the responses you get. Perhaps you should start a new thread with a better "subject." I, of course, always read posts labeled "stupid." It helps me polish my superiority complex.

  • Probably Stupid question, but - how to remove motion tracking from a clip?

I've been playing around with the motion tracking feature, and think I may have come up with a way to make it work to highlight my now infamous "football"
However, I need to delete the motion tracking effect (s) that I've added to the clip so that I can start fresh.  I cannot for the life of me figure out how to delete it!
This may be a very elemental question - and I apologize, but I cannot find the answer.  I just cannot delete the original yellow tracking boxes -
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Kim

To remove the Motion Tracking, just delete the graphic you attached to it. There's no need to remove the Tracking Object itself.
Although you can if you'd like. Just click to select the clip and then click on the Motion Tracking tool. Then right-click on the blue or yellow squares and select Delete.

  • Basic (probably stupid) question about APExp

Hi, Just one quick question. The Wi-Fi connection provided by the built in airport in my iMac covers my whole living room, but since I have many apple devices using that same NetWork, sometimes it fails. So before I buy an aiport extreme, I would like to try the airport express, and my question is: The airport express connects (and amplifies) to the wi-fi network of the iMac, so how do I know on which airport am I connecting with my other apple devices? I don't know if I was able to be clear. Thanks a lot!

Just one more question. If the APExp creates a new wifi network how do I have internet in all The devices?
Is it possible the following network configuration?:
iMac - cable - modem ( existing already) - existing AirPort - AirPort express - wifi (with internet) for all the other devices ( iPhone, apple tv, MacBook, ps3 )?
My idea is to have all this devices in network ( sharing files, playlists) with internet access ( which is phisically connected to The iMac)
Is it possible? Or do I have to buy an AirPort extreme AND an AirPort express ( since I have to have a cable To my ps3...And my wife is bugging me about The LAN cable across The living room?) . Thanks

  • Faces to Address Book (Probably Stupid Question)

Faces is coupled to address book in one way - it will suggest completions of names based on your Address Book entries. How about the other way? It seems there ought to be an easy way of choosing images from Faces as the custom image in Address Book - but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

    None that I'm aware of.
You can add a single photo to a contact's info in the Address Book on your Mac, which will be transferred to your iPhone when syncing.

  • Probably stupid question but i'll ask it anyway

this is my first Ipod - i downloaded my favorite tv show and it shows under tv shows and video playlists (90's music) - this doesn't mean it was added twice right?

No. A playlist is just a reference to the original file, not a copy.

  • I'm new and have a stupid question...

    Hi,
Im new to JAVA and have a probably stupid question wich my study books don't say anything about...
    When I use
    System.out.print("");
to show some text on screen I just get a grey box without text.
    Im using Internet Explorer 5
    JAVA 2 IDE
    Forte 2.0
    Please help me out!
When nothing shows on screen I don't know what I'm donig is right or wrong!

If you are using swing (which is not supported in the browsers' default VM), you can enable your browser to use the plugin jre by converting your html page with the html converter. You can download this from http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html
Also be aware that your browser might have cached older versions of your .class files. You might need to delete them first.
I recommend using the appletviewer to test your applet first. Open a command line and run:
    appletviewer your_page.html

  • Probably a stupid question about cropping a video..

OK, so I shot an interview with a black background and once I went to edit it, I noticed a red object in the far right corner. Is there a way I can add black over this object or crop it out? I know this is a stupid question, but I'm new to video and editing in general so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

There are several ways to accomplish what you want.
KGCW has talked about the Crop Effect.
Depending on exactly where the object is, and whether the camera was locked down, it might be possible to duplicate your Clip, place it above your initial Clip, then offset it a bit (Motion>Position), with the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position, and then apply the Garbage Matte to that offset duplicate, effectively Cropping out everything, but a small "patch" from the existing background. Note: if the edges of that Garbage Matte are too hard for you, you could create a soft-edged Track Matte, and use that to hold out the rest of the offset duplicate.
Another method, and depending on where, and how large the offending item is, would be to go to the Fixed Effect>Motion, and use Motion>Scale to increase the size of the Clip (do not do too much Scale, or quality will suffer). You might also need to do a bit of Motion>Position, to get that red object behind the Video's Frame Size. This will effectively Crop the object.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Probably a stupid question

just got a macbook pro and want to be able to use the webcam to chat with my hubby on his PC when he is out of town on business. he does NOT have a webcam so we need to know what kind he can get that will allow us to talk and see each other. i know this is probably a stupid question but we are new at this.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bevs
Any PC webcam that is compatible with your hubby's PC system, (Windows?) OS, and chat software will work. Best suggestions will come from the "Help" pages for his chat applications software.
For you to be able to video chat with your hubby, it is important that you choose applications software that offers "cross-platform" (Mac to PC) video chat capability. There are several choices available, but Skype probably currently offers the best balance between ease of use and reliability in free cross-platform video apps.
Whichever apps (and camera) you and hubby choose, everything must be compatible with your respective computers and operating systems. I mention this because your posted system info shows macbookpro   Mac OS X (10.0.x). Mac OS X (10.0.x) is now five major upgrades old. No MacBook Pros shipped with Mac OS X (10.0.x), so I expect that your system info just needs to be updated. However, if I am wrong, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to use Skype, because Skype's System Requirements show you must use Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. I do not know any video chat apps that work with Mac OS X (10.0.x).
In order to use Skype, both you and your hubby will need to download and install your respective versions of the Skype software. Skype offers free AV connections between computers (although its website seems to concentrate on its for-fee telephone connection service,) it is easy for most users to configure and set up, and it offers cross-platform audio with its video chat. (Not all video chat apps offer simultaneous audio.)
Your iSight will work with Skype, as will most PC webcams for your hubby. For more information now, or for help if you encounter problems using Skype later, Skype offers comprehensive support that includes a dedicated Skype Forum as well as technical support directly from Skype in addition to its online FAQ and Knowledge-base.
If you decide to go with Skype, your hubby can get Skype-specific suggestions for PC webcams here.
Please let us know if you need any other info before you can mark your question "Answered." We will be happy to try to offer more focused suggestions for your specific questions.

  • This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

Actually, another person on the "more like this" had the right answer. It meant I had a notification for an invite that I needed to respond to.
Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

  • ITunes 11 how can the window background colour be changed from white to black in Grid View?

How do I change the window background colour ,in Grid View, from the new, default, white back to the good old, more easy on the eye, black?
Apple did this to us in iPhoto some time ago and had to add a preference for shades of grey other than white. Why didn't Apple learn from this mistake?

It is good to know I am not alone. The first thing I did after downloading iTunes 11 was go into preferences to change the background color. But alas, the option for a dark background is gone. I also was kind of disappointed in the lack of ability to resize the artwork, but not to the extent of some other commenters here.
I will say this though. I love the way the albums expand with custom colored backgrounds based on each album's artwork colors. This looks fantastic. Still it would be nice to accomodate those who prefer to use a dark background for the overall application's theme.
So, Apple, I join with my fellow users in requesting the return of resizable artwork, and the option for at least a dark (or an even further customizable) background color for the overall theme of the application. Thanks!
    Godspeed,

  • [noob question] setting window background colour?

    Hi,
Am just getting to grips with basics of Xcode, Coacoa and IB, been looking at some easy examples and just set myself my first exercise; to build the C# Introductory Video example app
OK, basically all I want to do is open the colour picker from a button and set the window background colour. But still with nothing more than an empty window in IB I can't find any obvious means to define it's background colour (not even statically)?
Hope someone can help with this dead easy question... (my Coacoa programming book is still on it's way from Amazon
    Ceers,
    Rich
PS. just looking for a nudge in the right direction, please - not a step by step description how to write my sample app, as well meant as that might be. cheers

+Although I'm guessing from the underlying tone you're already pretty experienced and it's been a long time since you sat down yourself and first started to "look through the documentation"?!?+
Sorry didn't mean to let the tone bleed through that much.
But seriously I assumed there was an NSWindow function that did it, checked the documentation, found it, mocked it up in 5 minutes (alright 10 I'm still getting used to IB in Xcode 3), tested it to make sure it worked as expected and then answered your post. Not that you should have been able to do that as quickly but I could do it because I have slogged through the process for other objects I had used.
Really this is a pretty basic Cocoa kind of operation. I have object X supplied but Cocoa (eg NSWindow, NSTextBox, etc.) and I want to do operation Y. Operation Y is almost always already there for you just waiting to be used. Learning this process of finding these things in the documentation and using them is really crucial to being a proficient Cocoa developer.
In Xcode 2 Help > Documentation will give you the searchable API and just type in NSWindow. In Xcode 3 selecting an object - like NSWindow - will change the Help > Documentation menu to point to NSWindow directly.
Cocoa is a very "lived in" API and it has clearly been evolved by people who really used it so it has the buttons and levers right where you want them most of the time. I assumed that NSWindow had a function to change the color simply because it would make sense that it would. And when I checked it did, but my making that assumption and being able to find the function comes from doing the heavy lifting already on other objects.
I'm just hoping you take this as an example of how to do this and next time dig into the docs and find the function. There is no way to be good at it without doing it and getting good at it gives you access to Cocoa's rich API and will get you very far because you get all that programming other people have done for you for (almost) free.
    Good luck,
    =Tod

  • When I open a new windows from my current tab background turns black. Can this be disabled?

I use Remedy and when I open a new windows from my current one my background turns black. This started when I moved to the new update. Is there anyway to disable this?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Probably a stupid question about upgrades...

I originally bought Adobe CS3 Web Premium and upgraded to CS5.5 Design Premium last year.  I'm wondering if I upgrade, will my price be based on the CS3 license or the CS5.5 upgrade...?
I'm guessing it will be based on CS5.5, but I want to make sure.
    -A. Ka

    There are no stupid questions!
Regardless of whether you got to CS5.5 via upgrading to it or by originally licensing CS5.5 is irrelevant in terms of the upgrade price to CS6 as well as the media you use for the upgrade.
