Problem between a Mac Pro / 01-2007 and ATI Radeon X1900XT

Hello,
My friend has bought a second hand ATI Radeon X1900XT with a fan Zalmann Fatality VC-ZV9 and has the following problems. She can switch on her computer without any problem and the card works fine (Photoshop, ...) As soon as she launches Secondlife client, the screen gets black few minutes after, and if she tries to switch off and on the screen, it says "No signal" anologic or digital. This card is reported to work very well with Secondlife. It can't be overheat, since it comes very quickly, and just after the crash, she can touch the card which is not hot. The fan works fine. How can I investigate to find out what goes wrong with this card ? Her computer is a Mac Pro bought in January 2007 with 3 Gb RAM and Leopard. The problems has occured before 10.5.3 version of Leopard was installed. I've made a test of the Video Memory with Techtool Deluxe and it didn't find any problem.
Thank you

I think I'm having a similar problem: running a Mac Pro/ATI Radeon X1900XT. Was having issues with general artifacts that seemed to come and go randomly. The machine got very hot one day when the AC was not on and the office was closed: random artifact "pixel dots" became lines on the screen, and then the entire screen just went black.
I had to do a hard shut down, and it's happened several times since. When I pulled the ATI card out, there was considerable dust built up at the intake which I cleaned out. It hasn't blacked out again, but the artifacts remain on the screen.
I suspect the card is about to die, but was trying to see if anyone else had this experience? Also, if anyone recommends replacing it with the same card, or if there is a better recommendation? I do general design and photo editing, no gaming and nothing very intense.
Thanks for the help!!

  • Horizontal lines with Mac Pro 1,1 and ATI Radio X1900XT

I love my Mac Pro, I've had it since 2007. But recently, I have been having a video problem and I hope somebody here might have some advice or suggestions.
    _The Problem_
Large horizontal lines going across the screen - especially when it is displaying quickly moving images. These horizontal lines move upward, as if trying to refresh the image. Examples: playing a video, scrolling down a webpage, rearranging windows.
    _My computer setup_
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with ATI radeon x1900 graphics card. I am using two displays, and experience the following problem on both displays. My displays are set up as follows:
*Display 1:* Acer H234H, uses male DVI to male DVI connection
*Display 2:* Panasonic TC-37LZ85, male DVI to male HDMI cord > HDMI coupler (i.e. 2 both sides female) > male HDMI to male HDMI cable
Both are using 1920x1080 screen resolution.
I don't think this is an issue with either of the individual monitors for 2 reasons:
    (1) both of them do it
    (2) the Acer has a very fast response time (2 ms) yet it also has the problem.
Suggestions, comments, ideas, and "hey me too"s are welcome and appreciated.

Thank you for your answer; I followed your suggestions:
The card is working fine in terms of spinning and is not dusty.
I booted from the Mac OS Installer DVD, and couldn't replicate the problem. But I don't think that's a good indicator, because this problem is intermittent and doesn't manifest itself consistently. Also, there's no way of playing video or scrolling down a webpage from the Installer DVD.
Also, I tried switching the two display connectors around (plug 2 to plug 1 and vice versa), which caused something interesting to happen: I stopped seeing vertical lines but started getting WEIRD flickering and green artifacts. Again, this happened on both screens.
The Apple Hardware Test said everything is fine (weird).
I think I'll try your suggestion of re-installing the OS. I always dread doing it. But hey maybe it'll make my computer run fast again (it's been running slowly lately).
Cheers, thanks for the suggestions, and I'll post back regarding what happens next.

  • Mac Pro 3.1 and ATI Radeon 3870 running Snow Leopard

    Hi.
Anybody who can give me a straight answer here.
    I have a Mac Pro3.1 8 Core 2.8Ghz with Radeon 3870 card. (Standard 2600 HD)
Right now it runs 10.5.8 with no problems but i want to update to 10.6.3 Snow.
But someone told me the 3870 card isn't working with Snow Leopard.
    Is that right ?

Someone? not working? I think they mean that some features won't be supported, like perhaps OpenCL.
Use GT120 cheap and works or shell out for ATI 4870 (or wait and see if anything comes out this year).
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC002ZM/A
Most of what is written seems like it wasn't a tech writer, but then Apple doesn't get into telling customers what UEFI/EFI64 is the over-riding requirement.
Take Apple hardware specs with grain of salt.
The 4870 works in ALL Mac Pro models (and look at the threads, or the comments on the product page why not). No mystery there either.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A
Even the GTX 285 works, if interested.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW387ZM/A
And one person has both ATI 4870 + GTX 285, using a couple break out power cables and adapters.

(via Aux power Y adapters) And yes, he knows that apple lists 300W Max for the PCIe cards in the manual.
I've got the dual high-power graphics cards running without a hitch. It's rendering with the GTX 285 and CUDA now while I use the computer with the Radeon 4870 (no GUI lag, which is a nice change from using the GTX 285) http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

  • Mac Pro Early (2008) and ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Hey, I recently got the new Mac Pro (2008), and wanted to put my old ATI Radeon X1900 XT in my new machine, however when i put it in the extra wide x16 PCIe 2.0 slot, secured it and fired up my machine, the screen remained black and the fans went constantly on full speed, i swapped over the DVI to the other graphics card, ATI Radeon HD 2600 in slot 2. In system profiler it didn't recognise the X1900 XT.
According to the apple site, a PCIe 1.1 card can be put in a 2.0 slot and vice versa, so im not quite sure why its not working!
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated .
    Chris

It appears that you can run the 1900 xt in the new Mac Pro early 2008. Rob Morgan has benchmarked the results. Apparently it works well in gaming, however, it does not offer all that much over the stock 2600 xt for Motion performance. With Motion the 1900 XT was only a few seconds faster than 2600 XT. Good luck.

  • Mac pro 3,1 and ati hd5870 overheating (shut down issues)

Hi all I have an early 2008 mac pro 16gig ram and the ati hd 5870 on dual boot windows 7 64bit, it has been running brill for about a year but then I started getting random shut downs in windows and the occasional one in macOS 10.7 I upgrade to 10.8 loved some of the new features but the shuts down became unbareable in both OS I would also just get black screen on startup and have to do forced reboots etc.
If I took out the hd5870 and put back inthe original ati card everything worked as normal except the orginal card isnt supported in fcpX and I need this for my work when I take out the hd5870 card it is boiling hot so I have done some research and it appears I am not the only one with over heating issues.
I have seen there are several third party graphic card cooling options but mac being mac I dont seem to have any free additional power outputs to power a third party cooling device, so my question is this
1, is anyone selse having these issues and has figured out a way to stop the shut downs
    2. has anyone or does anyone know how i can keep my card cool?
inside my mac is squeaky clean and so is the graphics card.
ps, typical it is just outside the 1 year warranty and the card is so expensive i didn;'t want to buy 1 every single year

    @ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug.  10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade.  Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
    @ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
    Any other bright ideas?

Cannot connect to Macbook Pro from Mac Pro late 2013. I have tried via ethernet and wifi. I can screen share either way. I have tried to connect to other MBP's on the same network with no luck. I try and connect as a registered user, as I usually do, with no luck. I have no firewall on. Both devices are using the most recent OS.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 with ATI Radeon 5770 + 30" Apple Cinema Display Problem

    Ok guys/gals,
First of all I apologize for the thread as there have been previous posts in the past referrencing various different questions and setups, but I have a problem..  It's a little bit of a noob question so sorry in advance BUT..
What is the correct way to set up the 30 inch with the 5770?  I have an old 3,1 (early 2008) that I've upgraded with various hard disks, SSD and 12 gig RAM.  I removed the stock Nvidia Card and replaced it with this one but I am having problems that cause the Mac to slow down and the display to go all "fuzzy" or have streaking greenish lines (which you can only see against a black backdrop).
Currently, i have it going into the DVI port with the USB and FW extensions just lying around.. I've read something about needing to source more power from the motherboard to power the display, but I am not sure what to do... It's hit or miss really... every time i want to play say Starcraft 2, i need to restart my Mac Pro else it gets extremely sluggish (graphics)...
Is my Mac dying?  or am i not powering the 30 inch correctly?  If not, then I am confused between display ports and dual power (active) mini display ports.. can someone please point me in the right direction?
Apols for the long note, but am pretty good with computers but this is just annoying the sh*t out of me and has been for a while...
(PS - I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW MAC PRO !!!)
    Thanks,
    NK

  • 10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870

    Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
    I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
    Thanks
    Paul

Hey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Running 3 displays on a Mac Pro with a single ATI Radeon HD 5770?

    Hi all,
I am trying to run 2 19" widescreen monitors with VGA connections and a Sony 32" tv simulantaneously on my Mac Pro. Was wondering if anyone could offer some knowledge on this highly discussed topic...As far as I am aware the main problems that seem to arise with other users on similar forums when trying to do this is the mis-informed use of passive adapters as opposed to active adapters. Is this correct, or is there more to consider here? Do I need to buy a second HD 5770?
After some research here is my proposed setup:
Monitor 1: ACTIVE mini displayport to VGA adapter
Monitor 2: ACTIVE mini displayport to VGA adapter
Monitor 3: DVI port to HDMI cable
    Should this solve my problems?
The active adapter that I am looking to buy is this:
    http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/mdp_vga.htm
Hope someone out there can be of some assistance,
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

That setup should work.  I believe all mini-displayport (mDP) to vga adaptors are considered as "active".  I know that apple documents that their adaptor is considered active (see note in this doc).  So you satisfy the requirement of having two active adaptors to support three monitors on a 5x70.  And I think the Accell one you linked to is also fine.
Note, that while your setup will work to drive the video to the two vga's and HDTV's, you still need to address how to pass audio to the HDTV.  DVI does not support audio.  If you aren't interested in passing audio then you can ignore the reast of this post.
In my setup with a 5870 I have a vga monitor going through one of the apple mDP-to-vga adaptors (that counts as one active adaptor).  I also have a 2010 27" apple LCD monitor which of course connects directly to the second mDP (no active adapter so I still need a another).  And like you I want may HDTV connected to the DVI.  So to satisfy the requirement of a second active adaptor, and to also avoid having to pass analog audio cables to the TV (which you have the option to do with your setup), I chose to use the following device with satisfies the requirement of an "active" adaptor.
DVI & S/PDIF Digital Coax/Optical Toslink Audio to HDMI Converter
This allows me to pass the DVI and TOSLINK (digital) audio to that converter and string a single HDMI cable to my HDTV.  Works perfectly.  The only thing about that converter is it's limited to 1080i, not 1080p.  I don't care, couldn't tell the difference anyway on a 32" HDTV.
Finally, to go along with all this I use SwitchResX which allows me to set up multiple monitor configurations.  So I can enable the TV when I want to use it from my computer and disable it when I don't.  And I can switch the configurations with a menu or hot-keys.  And with a little applescripting which you can add to SwithResX configurations I can even switch the audio from my computer to the TOSLINK, i.e., switch between my computer speakers and those attached to the TV.

I guess I should have clarified and said "can you please share what you've used and been successful with"
Two that I have been considering are:
    ConnectPRO

    IOGear

If you do the Belkin KVM wizard, as soon as you reference a Mac, they only support VGA and I am not sure why.  http://www.belkin.com/kvm/

    Not true.
There is 3,1, there was nothing else.
you can pull up Apple Support Mac Pro specs easy enough and tell by RAM speed and other items - or go to Everymac.com even.
All we need and what you could have done is taken the top line of System Profile that tells the model.

  • Moving a project between a Mac Pro and an iMac

I have a 3-year-old Mac Pro at home and a similarly aged iMac at the office. I'm working on a project with ~25GB of files on the MP with my a system/application drive, the project files on the second drive and the scratch files set up on the third disk.
I'd like to do some work on it at the office (iMac), but I don't know how to do it. Can I simply copy the project files and the .fcp file to a hard drive and copy that to my iMac? How will FCP know where things are? Also, if I can do it successfully, how do I take the edits done on the iMac and bring them back to my MP to use them too?
    Thanks for any guidance.

Jim, I didn't think of that as a rant. In fact, I could relate to it on a musical level. In a former career as a composer/arranger/orchestrator I took a lot of gigs to support myself. Often I copied, transcribed, edited, and proofread music. This is all painstaking and industry specific work. For example, if you're working on a show and a singer complains to the music director that the key of A-flat is too high for her, it's decided to lower the song to the key of F. No one thinks about it, but now you might have oboe, clarinet, trombone, or violin parts that can not be played on the instruments because they're out of the range of the instrument.
So it's up to the copyist, editor, or proofreader to say, "Wait a minute, that really cool effect with the violas holding that open low C is now impossible to play."
With today's technology, however, it's possible for people to compose songs and scores with no knowledge of the intricacies of music whatsoever. I'm not making any value judgments, just agreeing with you that education organization, understanding, and planning are key to doing the best work you can.
I wish I could work as an assistant, but I'm getting into video as an avocation. I don't have a goal of making money, but I would like to make narrative films.
It's been a learning process since purchasing a video camera last year. I've been reading as much as I can about preproduction, scripting, casting, lighting, color, production design, cinematography, audio, writing, and postproduction: basically, movie making in general. And, even with a lot of time and experimentation, I don't even feel I've made a dent in the wealth of knowledge I need to absorb to do my ideas justice, but each day brings new information and new opportunities to learn.
This, for sure, is a rant so I'll end it with my appreciation to you, to Michael, and all the others in this and other similar communities who are willing to share their knowledge and time with neophytes. Though technology has created a new era where anyone -- with or without a lot of knowledge, for better or for worse -- can write a piece of music, publish a book, or create a film, it's also provided us with valuable communities that would have been inconceivable thirty or forty years ago.

  • Mac Pro  Graphics card and Motion 5

I purchased my Mac Pro in 2007,  It is 2x 2.66 GHz dual core with 12 GB 667 MHz DDR2 F8-DIMM
My grahpics card is Radeon X1900.
Is this sufficient for Motion 5 and will I see a difference in speed, etc from Motion 4.
Also, is it possible to upgrade my graphics card to say, ATI 4870 to improve graphic performance all around?   I have a real problem with complex graphics and usually cannot see them in full render until I compress the project.
    Thanks,
    Sandra

Any of the graphics cards that Apple sells for the Mac Pro will be fine. Personally, I'd suggest choosing one with at least 128MB video RAM, 256MB would be better.
2GB RAM in your Mac Pro will be more than enough for general purpose video editing. Going to 4GB will give you more oomph for RealTime effects and somewhat for rendering but you won't see a big difference in regard to capturing or general editing in the timeline.
