Problem: Cannot send mail unless Password is transmitted insecurely & Port is set to 587.. Can receive mail but can't send Code 501..
Need help with T-bird.. My OS is Win XP-64..Have been using Mozilla for about 10 years with little or no problems.. This happened when I upgraded to 3.17.. Spent hours on T-Bird diagnostics web site.. Called Comcast & talked to a net tech.. he ran some tests on his end & had me log into my Comcast e-mail account & all worked well,, so he concluded the problem was in T-Bird.. He had me change my port to 587 & disable connection security & authentication to none & I was able to send mail.. That was all he could do.. Comcast was working.. the problem is in T-Bird.. Can any one help with this problem.. I don't want to send mail with my password transmitted insecurely..
Thanks
Richard

It was not intended to be "snide". You said two separate things that at face value would be out of the ordinary.
I considered if it might be a typo for 31.7. Since 31.5 is the current formal release, I would have to thank you for volunteering to test a pre-release beta version. If it was truly 3.1.7 then it would appear that you have chosen, or have become stuck with a somewhat ancient version. In either case it's harder to reach out to you with any meaningful comments or advice. However I do watch various other sites and newsgroups and I don't see a clamour of distressed users, so it seems fair to suppose that this feature isn't actually broken in 31.7.
And you said XP 64. XP is obsolete and no longer supported and if there is a 64-bit version, then again you have set yourself apart from the mainstream.
I had a look at the comcast site and found some puzzling recommendations. Some users come here asking how to set up a secured connection in Thunderbird when it isn't offered by the server. Comcast are different, in that they mention the ports 143 and 587, and also 993 and 465. So far so good, in that security is actually on offer, but they also suggest that you enable SSL, regardless of which port is being used. It would be unusual and unconventional to offer TLS or SSL on ports 143 and 587. STARTTLS would be more credible on these ports.
Have you tried IMAP on 993 and SMTP on 465? SMTP on 587 with SSL, or TLS, is not impossible, but is improbable.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Can receive emails but can't send any

Can receive messages but can't send any. What setting am I missing?

I had this same problem with my zoho mail account.  It started when I changed my email password on the computer....Long story short I have been going crazy for a few days. I could receive mail, but couldn't send anything from that account! (Fortunately I have two other accounts which are a different server - gmail.) I turned my iPad2 off then on again...I did a sync with iTunes...I deleted the account and then added it back...Still it would not send..Just receive!
I did finally get it fixed, but it took about an hour poking around and looking for help here.
    There were several problems:
    1. Somehow the server port numbers were incorrect. So when I added the account back in, I found that the "incoming server port" was not correct and fixed it. But I didn't see how to check the "outgoing server port." - somehow in the setting up process, that just wasn't exposed.
    2. Eventually I found the "outgoing server port" here:  - Go to Settings - General - Mail - Account. Then tap on the Account you need to fix. Check the information there to be sure it is correct.
THEN: tap on the white bar just below the word "Outgoing mail Server"
    That takes you to "SMTP"
You will see a primary server, and "other SMTP servers"
Somehow I had 3 there that were the same account server name (zoho) ..all with the wrong port number!
But even after fixing each one, I still couldn't send mail. This led to problem number 3:
    3. Apparently having 3 of the same account was a problem. After I deleted all three of the accounts, then tapped on "Add Server" and entered the information back in again. Bingo, I could send mail!!
I don't know why, but now my "Primary Server" says "Not configured - off"
And all the "Other" servers say "off" as well.
But it's working so I am going to leave it as it is.
I hope some of this is helpful.

  • I can receive email but can't send on my ipad2

I can receive email but can't send on my ipad2. It says 'rejected by the server'.

I would that that your smtp settings are set up wrong
I would verify them 1 by 1 against the setup guide from the mail provider
if they were the same I would suspect that your phone company are blocking the ports
required by smtp in which case I would take contact to them and ask why

  • TS3899 Can receive emails but can't send them

Hello ~I can receive emails on my phone but am unable to send any out.  Any ideas on why this happening? I have contacted our email provider and everything is good on their end.  Thank you in advance!

If you think there is something wrong with the phone, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar to get it checked. I'm just telling you what I know about mail and how it works. Does GoDaddy tell you that you have a POP account? Again, the error that you are seeing is that the server is rejecting the settings you have for the outgoing mail SMTP server. Believe me, I would have changed email providers a lot quicker than 2 years if I could not send mail. Something in your SMTP setting is wrong. Did you verify that the username and password are in every section, even where the phone reports optional? That is one of the things mentioned in the support page. The handling of mail is in two pieces. There is the incoming server, which is how you receive mail. That is completely separate from the SMTP server which is how you send mail. The two function separately, and you can receive mail and not be able to send and vice versa. It all has to do with settings.
No matter what you paid for the phone the error isn't coming from the phone, unless you do not have a setting right. I would be frustrated as well, but it has to do with your email provider. They should be able to see how your email client is pinging the email server and tell you where the error is.
I'll ask this question again, do you have another email account on the phone? I'm trying to understand if you have another SMTP server on the device for a different provider.

  • Exchange Server 2007 OWA users can receive email but can't send

    Hi,
I have an Exchange server 2007 in an SBS 2008 environment with POP3 connector configured and working fine , smtp send mail connector configured.
Now users can connect to OWA, receive email but cant not send.
smtp connector works fine from Outlook client. Tried to track the emails from exchange server management console and I get the
    SEND DELIVER SUBMIT TRANSFER.
The emails go to the sent items folder, but it never reach the recipients.
Have been troubleshooting for a while without succes. Any help will be most appreciated.
    Regards
    Faisal

POP3 is a single mailbox client mail retrieval protocol, not a mail transport protocol.
Any attempt to use it as a mail transport protocol is a great big kludge.
Exchange is designed to connect to the Internet using SMTP.
No version of Exchange has a POP3 connector.
I recommend that you post this in the SBS Forum:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/smallbusinessserver/threads
