Problem deleting multiple rejected photos in Lightroom 3

I had some frustrating trouble deleting a set of rejected photos. I am running LR3 on Windows 7 64 bit.
I flagged about 220 out of 600 photos as rejects in a folder. When I hit ctrl-backspace to delete them, the rejects were shown in the grid view but were not deleted. Nothing I could do would delete them, I tried all the workarounds I could find in the forum and tried everything else I could think of. I was able to delete them one at a time but not all at once.
Then I tried deleting them in chunks... two at a time, three at a time - worked. Then I tried 30 or so - got a message that one or more of the photos had been published to flickr. I clicked OK to delete from Flickr, that was processed then I got the prompt to delete them - worked. Then I tried deleting the rest of the pictures - about 160 left at that point, worked fine.
There seem to be quite a few people having trouble deleting rejected photos, maybe there is some kind of conflict between the publishing function and deleting rejects?

With respect to problems deleting multiple keywords: On Windows, since at least version 3, LR has had basic bugs when you have more than about 1600 keywords showing.  (Hard to believe it isn't fixed by now.)   A simple workaround for you situation is to filter the keywords one letter at a time and then select the subset of keywords that are showing -- e.g. filter all keywords with the letter "t", then all keywords with the letter "b", etc.
With respect to not getting the keywords into your catalog in the first place: You can define a Metadata Preset that will clear the keywords on import:

  • Problem deleting multiple keywords in lightroom 5

    I am importing about 20,000 pictures from Flickr. they are all creative commons, and the end result will be the use of approximately 4000 of these in an online sign language dictionary.
    I use Bulkr to import them and this process imports the tags as well as other information such as the photographers name and url.  Many of these photos arrive with hundreds of tags, so that the total number of tags might be 20000 or more.  I need to assign my own tags and delete all the tags that the photo arrived with.  I use the lightroom batch delete to do this (the little minus sign at the top of the keyword list).  i select a keyword, hold down the shift key and scroll down.  the problem is that i cannot just scroll down to the bottom of the list.  There appear to be unpredictable keywords that cause the shift-select process not to work.  if i scroll back up and then carefully scroll part of the way back down, then there will be a point at which shift-select stops working and above that it works.
    The end result of this is that it takes numerous shift-select-scroll down-select to delete everything so that what should take maybe 2 minutes takes 20 minutes or more.
    The problem may be related to foreign language keywords especially chinese characters, but even what looks like a perfectly ordinary keyword can stop it.  Two recent examples: travellers cheque  and Київ. In all cases, the words can be deleted when i click directly on them.  you just cant shift-select THROUGH them.
    A separate annoyance that i will just grumble about is that i was forced to put these pictures in a separate catalog because there is always the risk that i could manage to delete my own keywords while batch-deleting everyone elses, and there is no simple way that i know of to undo this. with the separate catalog at least i wont delete all the keywords for my own pictures.

  • Can't 'Delete Rejected Photos' (since Lightroom 5.6?) - just removes from catalog, not disk

    I use Lightroom 5 (64-bit) on Windows. Recently (possibly since the 5.6 upgrade?) I can't delete rejected photos from the catalog. Instead of asking if I want to delete from the disk or just the catalog or cancel, like it used to, it now asks if I want to remove from the catalog or cancel. The files are left on disk. This happens if I Ctrl-Backspace or choose the Photo > Delete Rejected Photos menu.
    Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions please? My daughter borrows my camera so I delete a LOT of pictures - without this option I don't have a quick way to do that.
    - cheers, Barney

    I had a similar problem, and here is what I think is happening.
    It depends on how you are viewing your pictures.  If you are viewing a collection, Delete Rejected Photos will only remove them from the collection.  There is no prompt to remove the files from the hard drive.  Instead, you need to view the entire catalog (All Photographs).  This time when you selected Delete Rejected Photos, there is a prompt asking if you want to remove the files completely from hard disk.
    I have recently switched from Bridge to Lightroom, and I'm used to organizing and sorting my photos by directory.  This is another adjustment I need to make in my normal workflow.

  • How to delete multiple unplaced photos from photo book?

    Too many photos were loaded into book project, is there a way to select more than 1 photo at a time to be removed from the book project?

    Hi Terence
    Because over time I will have a lot of books and in each one will have thousands of thumbnails not being used. Must be taking up space surely, because when I delete the original photo from the library the thumbnail is still in the book. So its unused and unnecessary, so therefore would like to delete it.
    For info, I want to delete my library and re-import because I synchronise my photos with my home computer, which is Windows. My photo library is organised in folders before importing into iphoto, such as:
    Holidays 2009
    -> Spain
    -> France
    Family
    -> Rosy
    ----> 0 to 3 Months
    ----> 3 to 6 Months
    ----> 6 to 9 Months
    ----> etc
    Finlay
    --> 0 to 3 Months
    Activities
    --> Snowdonia 2009
    So this is great to be able to find the photos I need.
    iPhoto completely destroys that, I now have something like:-
    2009
    --> Spain
    --> France
    --> Snowdonia
    --> 0 to 3 Months
    --> 3 to 6 Months
    --> 6 to 9 Months
    2010
    --> 0 to 3 Months
    So you can see there is now no categorisation, Rosy and Finlay have disappeared from my hierarchy, I would not know what are Holidays or what are Activites.
    This is OK If I only used iPhoto I can rename the Event. But this does NOT rename the folder. So now when I sync with windows I get the second list above and my categorisation is lost. So I have a lot more than the above folders, its a nightmare to identify what the folders are as I have not renamed them with the full keywords, but have used a hierarchy system.
    So I want to delete my library, and rename all my folders so I get something like Rosy 0 to 3 Months etc. This way when I import the Event is called this, and when I sync with windows the folder is named this too. I dont mind the iPhoto hierarchy, I just need the folders to be called something descriptive.

  • Is there a way to delete multiple duplicate photos easily?

    Is there a way to remove duplicate photos.  I have a hard disk crask and the backup put multipul copies of photos in the photo file.  Is there an easy way to eliminate them?

    Sounds like you imported that back up rather than restored it. Do you still have it? If so, it would easier and faster to restore it correctly.
    If not:
    Some apps for dealing with duplicates in iPhoto
    iPhoto Library Manager
    Duplicate Annihilator
    Decliner
    iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner

  • Problem deleting multiple pages in Pages

    Hi
    When I select 'Delete Pages' from edit I get a dialogue box asking if I want to delete all 160 pages of my document - not what I want to do. I only want to delete certain pages. I've tried selecting some text and no text at all and it still gives me this dialogue box and no option to type in the pages I'd like to delete. In full screen mode I tried to highlight the pages I wanted to delete but I can't do that either.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    I'm using Snow Leopard and iworks '09 on a MacBook.

    Thanks fruhulda,
    Perhaps I caused confusion when I wrote:
    To select a large section of a document, have you tried Shift Click?
    I did not mean Section as in Section Break.
    I edited my post to:
    To select a large part of a document.
    But my internet connection failed when I tried to repost. Then I gave up!
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • HT4927 How to delete all duplicate photos ?

    What is the best way to delete multiple duplicate photos ?

    You can use one of the apps:
    iPhoto Library Manager
    Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
    Duplicate Annihilator
    iPhoto Applescript to Remove Duplicates - free
    My personal favorite is the same as Larry's, iPhoto Library Manager.

  • Problems with Delete Rejected Photos

    I hope this hasn't been addressed earlier. I checked as far back as I had patience.
    I recently upgraded to a new Vista 64bit system. LR 64bit seems to "Not Respond" after I use the "delete rejected photos". Both instances the photos were deleted but LR Library siezed. On the first occaision I deleted around 40 photos the secont time was 300+ photos. Any ideas or information welcome.
    Thanks

    I'm banging myself on the head, 11,400+ items, 39.2gb. I knew that, just forgot to think of it. Just copied/moved much data between four drives. Thanks

  • Can't delete photos from Lightroom 2

    Hi all,
    My first post here.
    I am having trouble deleting photos from my hard drive through Lightroom 2. It will remove the "Rejected" photos from the catalogue, but will only sporadically delete them from my hard drive. I've tried a number of solutions I read about on-line: deteting from the bottom filmstrip only rather than the grid, using Ctrl+backspace, etc. but nothing works. Or I should probably say that nothing works consistently. I also cannot find any pattern as to when it does delete them properly -- the last few days nothing has worked. Do I just have to live with this, or have any of you out there figured out?
    I've also checked the properties of these files in Explorer -- they are not "Read only" nor are they "Hidden". I've made sure that I'm in the Library module, Grid view selected, all filters are off, and I've tried deleting them from individual folders as well as the "All Photographs" option. The last couple of days, all I can get is a message like "There are 203 files that cannot be deleted."
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Take care.

    I think I saw this once, with a few rejects (only with Lr 2.) It would show me the reject grid view without any images, but I could still see them in the library grid as rejected.  Eventually I was able to reject them, but I don't remember what I did, other than ignore it and hope it went away eventually.
    You can do nutty stuff like unflag the images (maybe make a collection first, so you don't lose them in your library) and then delete some or all of them from the filesystem.  Then let Lr complain about the missing files and make the gesture that drops them from the catalogue. It really depends if this problem is related to the underlying unlink operation or some database integrity issue.
    I used to regularly SQLite vacuum my catalogue, too, so if it is catalogue related, perhaps that shook things loose.

  • Internal Error when trying to delete rejected photos

    This problem started yesterday after I moved some of my library to an external hard drive.  I created a new catalog and moved the photos within lightroom.  I don't know if the move of photos caused the error or not.  Now whenever I try to delete rejected photos, I get the following error message:
    Database "/Users/mollynordin/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat": PreviewDataObservers_DevSettingsDeletions.devSettingsDigest may not be NULL
      Statement: DELETE FROM Adobe_imageDevelopSettings WHERE id_local = ?;

    I cannot delete any photos even if they are not rejected.

  • I no longer get the dialog box when trying to delete rejected photos.

    I have always used the Delete Rejected Photos. . . selection to get rid of the photos I have flagged as rejected. However, after the rejected photos are shown, the dialog box no longer appears with the option to Delete from Disc or to Remove from the LR Catalog. I don't know if this problem began with LR 3.4 or before, but the timing was close. It isn't that I don't know how to use the function because I have been using it for years. Any help would be appreciated.

    Since I had 358 photos out of almost 2800 flagged as 'rejected' I did not
    want to loose all my work. I selected the rejected photos and then flagged
    them all with a 'yellow' color. I then displayed all photos with a yellow
    flag and 'Un-rejected' them. I highlighted a small amount of them, about 30,
    and rejected them and then went to the Delete Rejected photos. the pop-up
    came up and I was able to delete them. Since the rest of my yellow flagged
    photos were still showing I rejected another chunk of them and so on till
    they were all deleted. When trying to delete a group that had published
    photos within I got a box warning me that if I deleted them the published
    ones could no longer be managed by LR. That is alright with me. It would be
    nice if the software would somehow flag those that had been published. All
    the dialog box said was that one or more of the group had been published. I
    did not know which.
    Thanks again for expert help!

  • I'm getting an error message when I try to delete rejected photos!

    When I use the filter for selecting the flagged 'rejected' photos and press Cmd+delete, and then "delete from disk," as I have done many many times in the past, It is suddenly telling me that my files cannot be moved to the Trash folder. I just updated today from Lightroom 1.3 to 1.4.1, but this was happening over this past week, before the update. I'm on a MacBook Pro, using Leopard 10.5.2. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

    I could delete a couple of images through finder, yes...and then they'd delete from Lightroom. The workaround I found is to create a subfolder containing the deleted images in Lightroom, and then delete that folder from the finder. It's not quite right, but it works for now. I wonder if the trouble has something to do with the location of the images? Not sure. I was able to delete some other images within Lightroom successfully, but I can't figure out yet what these have in common that are different! I'll keep working on it...

  • Trouble deleting rejected photos

    I am cleaning up an old catalogue and marked a number of photos for rejecting.  I get the following error message together with a scrollable list of the rejected photos:
    "the files are on a volume that does not support Trash, would you like to permanently delete them?"
    Nothing happened when I selected the permanently delete button.
    This was not consistent behavrior, one time the rejected photos were deleted on persisting.
    This is an old catalogue and the files are on a different internal drive from the cataloge, note that I DID move them within Lightroom and nothing seems wrong with the thumbnail, i.e. the correct path is displayed and there is no question mark, etc.
    Any suggestions or explanations are appreciated.  I really want to delete my subpar photos!

    Hello,
    no solution but a work around.
    Create a filter for all rejected images an move these images a different, drive / partion with a trashcan. Then remove the images.

  • Problem deleting photos using ios7 on ipad 2

    I updated my iPad 2 with no problems. I then went to the apple photo app, selected a photo which correctly put a checkmark on it, but the trash can icon stayed greyed out, making it impossible to delete that photo. selecting multiple photos results in the same problem. Please log this as a bug and fix.

    Ok, more details.
    1. When in the iOS 7 Photo app you tap Photo button in the bottom toolbar.
    2. Then you tap Select in the top right Navbar
    3. Then find a photo which is NOT in the Photo-stream and NOT in the Camera Roll. I have a bunch of these for some reason after updating to iOS 7. These photos will get a checkmark, but will not turn the trash can blue.
    4. You can then select a photo that IS IN Photo-stream. It will also get a checkmark and the counter will display (2), and the trash can will turn Blue.
    5. You can then tap the blue trash can. The Photo-stream selected photo gets deleted BUT the photo the selected photo that is NOT in Photo-stream and NOT in camera roll IS Still There!
    I think the issue is that these photos that show under Photo but don't appear in the Camera Roll or Photo-Stream are "Orphans". So the real issue is how do I "adopt" them and get them into either the Camera Roll or zphto-strem? Still ths appears to be a bug that needs an Ape fix.
