Problem making disk image of Panther install cds...

Hi everyone!
I want to make a disk image of my Panther retail install cds...just to have a backup in case I lose my cds or something. The problem is on disk 2 I keep getting an input/output error using Disk Utility. I tried to use SuperDuper and I got the same and the log shows this:

Funny thing is I had problems installing my Panther recently and I had to disable the German package because of errors during install. Does this make sense at all and can anyone help me to make a disk image of my Panther cds?
Thanks in advance,
Reg

Hi eww!
Yes that might be possible? That's one of the reasons I wanted to make a disk image in case my cds would be damaged or something. It makes sense what you say because as I mentioned when I did my install I had a hang up with the German pkg and I just skipped over it...good thing I'm not German huh?
If I clean it up and everything and it's still the same problem what are my options? I don't see a way to de-select this package when making the disk image?
Thanks again,
Reg

  • How do you make a bootable install partition from a disk image of an install disk.

I have an iMac g4 running Leopard and would like to install OS X 10.3 on a different partition Leopard is on. However the super drive in the iMac will not read the disk I have, so I used my MacBook Pro to make a disk image of the install disk to use to install on the iMac. I do not know how to make the disk image into a bootable partition so I can install 10.3. The person I bought it from has already created a partition of the Leopard install disk and it is bootable but I do not know how he did this. Please help me. Thanks!

Could be the cd is bad.  Could be a bad cd reader.
I' not sure what you are trying to do.
    To install,
--  you need to boot from a cd.
-- copy a working installation from another partition. try carbon-copy-cloner
-- could try target disk mode.  There is a cd sharing mode.

  • "Authentication error", making disk image

I'm trying to make a disk image of my OS X boot disk, as an emergency backup. I'm booting from the Installation CD that came with my Mac Pro, and using Disk Utility. I select my boot drive, click New Image, and tell it to save to an external firewire drive, compressed and encrypted. It starts and quickly errors out, with "Authentication error." What does this mean?
I've used 250 GB of the 500 GB on my boot drive, and my external drive is 120 GB. I'd rather tell it to skip some files to save space, but it doesn't give me the option to do that. Will "compress" get it to be small enough? Is this why I'm getting an error? I've repaired permissions before booting from the CD.

I don't know about the authentication error; however, to make a disk image of 250 GB source drive to a 120 GB target is an exercise in futility. There's not enough room. 250 GB? What are storing? A complete music store, the movies of Hollywood, or the pictures in an art gallery?
If you want an emergency backup of your 500 GB HD, then you'll need an external at least as big. BTW, making disk images for this purpose is fraught with danger since you can't ensure that it's good until you restore it to a bootable HD. I strongly recommend something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. instead. BTW, you can just drag & drop any data files from one HD to another. There's no need to put them in a disk image and certainly no need to encrypt things. If you decide to go the bootable backup route, move the data files to root-level and don't back those up. That should make your emergency backup a lot smaller.

  • Disk Utility not copying all files when making disk image

My OS is 10.6.5 and everything is up to date.
I have a dvd that was burned for me of a play my child was in. It was probably burned on a PC using out of date software for all I know. But it plays in a DVD player and also in DVD player on my Macbook.
I want to be able to share clips of it online with friends, and that has all been just fine importing from the disk image I created of the DVD using Disk Utility, using IMovie 09 to edit it.
HOWEVER when I got to the end of act one, chapter 7 in the DVD is only about 3 minutes in length. The disk image I created using Disk Utility does NOT include any chapter 7 (which happens to be the ending of Act 1) and so I cannot import it into I Movie in order to add it to my mp4.
When I explore the DVD itself with my macbook, it only lists twelve files (various BUP's and IFO's and VOB's etc) -- here they are sorted by file name
    VTS022.VOB
    VTS021.VOB
    VTS020.IFO
    VTS020.BUP
    VTS013.VOB
    VTS012.VOB
    VTS011.VOB
    VTS010.IFO
    VTS010.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
Now, when my husband took the disc and created a .dvdmedia file in it and I explore that, there are 14 files. All of the same 12 files plus two more. (The DVD itself has 13 chapters but the main menu doesn't allow you to select them.)
the other two files in the .dvdmedia package are
    VTS020.VOB
    VTS010.VOB
But I can't do anything with that .dvdmedia file except watch it.
So I'm trying to figure out how to at least grab even just that last 3 minutes from Act 1 either from the original disc or from the dvdmedia file, using Imovie. So far having no luck. Disk Utility leaves it out and it's my only bridge from a burned DVD to Imovie. I've tried creating a DVD master and also an ISO using DVDRipper and that does the same thing. Also if I open the original burned DVD with Finder it only shows me the 12 files not the 14 that show up when using DVD Ripper to create a dvdmedia file.

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Quicktime to iDVD - iDVD quits when making disk image

You folks helped me a hugely with the arduous process of producing a nice 45 minute iMovie->iDVD movie last year from my digi camera, which actually works (http://www.galfromdownunder.com/peru). Thank you! Last year I was flummoxed by misplaced chapter markers. It's not the case this time.
I am doing another one of a similar size, and am at the stage of trying to burn a disk image, but it keeps falling over with 'iDVD unexpectedly quits' after about an hour and half. This time I saved the little log that pops up with 'send to Apple' (does anyone actually read it if you do?) and have posted it here:
    http://www.galfromdownunder.com/ftp/iDVD-crash-report-may2106.txt
I would really be so grateful if an extreme geek would mind taking a look before I try to reverse engineer this whole process further. The log always seems to stop at a place that says:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
The difference between this project and last year's is as follows:
    1) In an attempt to save time and space, I bypassed iMovie, and concatenated the QT7 clips and moved the resulting final movie directly into iDVD.
    2) Yes, I did see that the Chapter Markers I painstakingly inserted (using that arduous text file process described in QT Help, mindful of not putting one within 2 secs of beginning, end, etc etc) into the movie are not picked up by iDVD. Groan. Still, the disk image burn quit. Then I tried again with the second concatenated QT movie without chapter markers, but it still quit with the above report.
    3) I moved individual files to iDVD fudge a separate 'scenes' menu. I know it means there is redundancy in the data now, but there is 4 Gb to play with, so why not....
    4) The total capacity comes to 4.3 Gb according to the Status section in iDVD. When I clicked on the DVD Capacity button it said the total was 62 minutes. I thought it was under ... hmmm... had it set to Best Performance.
    5) I have about 11.47 Gb free on my laptop. I even tried making the disk image to a 20 gb Lacie external Firewire drive but it still quit.
    6) Is there any difference between moving a reference movie to iDVD vs a self-contained? Does the s/w resolve them for you at the end of the day?
Really appreciate help - I realize could/should get iLife06 and a bigger machine etc etc but since I managed to do it last year, why spend more money unless there is an insurmountable tech reason to do so.
    Thanking you,
    Lynette

My. You sound like an advanced user, but that sounds like a very advanced crash....
You know, I'm not one of the great experts, and I'm here to try to learn why iDVD won't start with a "Missing (iDVD) Image" in the crash log, but I've also had very little success with QT editing. Assembling clips frequently produces a video that is corrupted between clips, and a save doesn't really produce a truly complete file from a series of clips. Usually, the file plays up to a broken video, and the video then freezes, while sound continues. Yet picking on the video at the cursor will restart the video, so it's in there, just broken. Common occurance, this. This can be validated when that malformed file is imported into MPEG Streamclip (free app, and a good one), with the import only loading the clips up to the malfunctioning clip. I'm guessing that iDVD is running up against a malformed section in your QT file, causing a crash against a incorrect behavior in how the code accesses memory.
    What would I do?
Since there doesn't seem to be any "self-healing" ability in QT, and since you already have a QT file with times and bookmark names, you might be happier if you went ahead with iMovie, and used the QT file for a ready reference to recreate the video in iMovie. I've done this in remakiing a DVD from another DVD I've created. The recreation process only takes maybe 1/2 hour compared to the much longer first effort. Copying is easy.
I use Final Cut express myself, and like its quality, and use an external drive for movie making, so you can live with the 11gigs you have onboard using your Lacie. Given the sad behavior of iDVD on my G5 recently, not starting and all, I'm thinking that maybe another 3rd party product, like the highly recommended "Toast" may help me elude what I'm beginning to recognize as substandard Apple apps. Apple has annoyed me endlessly with my need to "convert" the standard 'mpeg' to use in Apple products, like Final Cut (even after the $10US upgrade to play mpeg). Perhaps that would be a long term positive for you too.
Like your current experience, I'm at the "had my fill" point with pure Apple apps. Too much dancing with them trying to get common communication to work and too little visibility into why malfunctions are occurring.
In any case, good luck on this fix. Hope someone can get you rolling.

  • Create encrypted disk image with OS install disk utility.

I thought to make a full backup of Macintosh HD, and followed instructions in /kb/ht1553.  However, every time I tried to creae an encrypted disk image, it barfed with "Failed - User interaction required". I assume it needed the encryption password, but for some reason was unable to display a prompt for this. Anyone know how to fix this?  Thanks, Stephen.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Problems with disk image in Time Capsule

I've created a disk image on my timecapsule to use as extra storage. Since the disk image won't automatically mount on my desktop, I have created an alias to a folder saved inside that disk image. When I open the alias, this mounts the disk image and I can view or write files as I wish. So far so good.
When however I acces the timecapsule through finder, I can see the disk image file (.dmg), but when I click on it, it says "Connection Failed" and that it cannot acces my timecapsule.
I want to share acces to my timecapsule, but from the other computer I cannot use that alias, and I have to access the timecapsule conventionally through finder, but I also get the "Connection Failed" error. How is it possible that I get a message that the connection failed, while I am able to connect through my "alias trick" on my own computer? Moreover, all other functions such as wireless printing work fine through TC and the light is green. I have the impression it may have something to do with how a disk image works which I don't quite understand: Can you open a .dmg file to write in it?
Does anyone have any ideas how this might work? Thanks!

    Real Player was the culprit.

  • Works, just one problem, make disk images non read only

I have a script that enables me to drop a file onto it and will ask for a text. It will copy the file and the text inside a new disk image.
However the created is read only, i would prefer it if i could edit it's contents.
    The code is given below:
global variable1, selecto, diskName, tempfolder, thepathp, xx, pathp
    on open {}
    my openp()
    end open
    on openp()
set thepathp to path to desktop
set pathp to POSIX path of (path to desktop folder) as string
    set variable1 to ""
    tell application "Finder"
set selecto to selection as alias
set infor to info for selecto
set diskName to name of infor
set diskname1 to diskName as text
set john to count character of diskname1
set xx to characters -john through -5 of diskname1 as string
    set tempfolder to make new folder at desktop with properties {name:xx}
set thepathp to thepathp & xx & ":" as string
    my serialnumber()
    duplicate selecto to tempfolder
    my makeimage()
    delete tempfolder
    end tell
    end openp
    on serialnumber()
    tell me to activate
display dialog "Enter the Serial Number:" default answer "" buttons {"Cancel", "Ok"} default button "Ok"
    copy the result as list to {the log_message, the button_pressed}
if the button_pressed is not "Cancel" then
set fName2 to xx & ".txt"
set myFile to open for access file ((thepathp as string) & fName2) with write permission
write log_message & return to myFile starting at eof
    close access myFile
    end if
    end serialnumber
    on makeimage()
    set selecto to thepathp
set pathp to quoted form of (pathp & xx & "s" & ".dmg")
set pselecto to quoted form of POSIX path of selecto as string
    set variable1 to "hdiutil create -srcfolder " & pselecto & " " & pathp
    do shell script variable1
    end makeimage
Merry Christmas and happy new year.

    Hi Richard!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
I don't know how much I can help but maybe you need to make a disk image first then convert it to get your results instead of creating the disk image in one step? In the "attach" function you have the possibility to select read/write. And interesting comments "about overriding the decision to make read only." (See man hdiutil under attach)
But this is just a thought...for what it's worth?

  • Making Disk Image...

I am burning a family slide show, and I need to restart, but I still have to burn 20 dvds. Question is, can I save this "image" to my desktop or movie folder so when I want to burn again I can just burn that instead of going through the whole process again?? There are 450 pics, and it takes for ever!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hello Jason,
creating a disk image is a highly recommended procedure when working with iDVD. Not only can you store the image file for future burns, but it also prevents coasters due to high (and non-adjustable) burn speed in iDVD.

  • Problem making web images with Illustrator

I'm in OSX 4.11 and am having problems getting Illustrator html files to show up on a web page. The file contents seem to disappear in uploading via CyberDuck FTP client.
Can anyone confirm that Illustrator can be used in this way please?

    > To to be clear James are you saying start with XHTML, and after that take on Dreamweaver?
Yes. I'm saying just get a book on basic XHTML and CSS. (The two go hand-in-hand.) While you learn basic coding, you'll be building perfectly functional web pages. When (if) you then feel you want to use a WYSIWYG web page editor anyway, you'll have a much better understanding of what Dreamweaver is doing for you.
    > is there an actual XHTML programme that I should use?
No. And yes. You can use just about any program; probably a half-dozen or more that are already on your computer. You don't need to buy anything (except the book).
Just think of XHTML as a more up-to-date version of HTML. XHTML, like HTML, is just text. You can create and edit your web page code in any of these programs:
    * Any of a plethora of WYSIWYG web page editors (Dreamweaver is one) which are designed to put a point-and-click interface on the process of building web pages.
    * The source code window usually built into WYSIWYG page editors. (Dreamweaver has one.)
    * Any of a plethora of glorified text editors with convenience features designed to enhance coding (such as auto-highlighting of tags).
    * Any ordinary text editor that can save plain text.
    * Any word processor that can save plain text.
Whatever book you buy will probably tell you to use a text editor you already have, or will point you to a free download, or will include one (if it's one of those books that come with a disk).
Just for the sake of understanding, do these two exercises:
    1. You're looking at a web page right now. Find the View Source command somewhere in the main menu of your web browser and select it. A separate window will probably open up (IE on Windows opens NotePad), showing you the HTML code of the page. Now, all that gobbletygook looks intimidating, right? Not to worry. Somewhere in there after all that header stuff is a "body" tag. Somewhere near the bottom is its closing "body" tag.
    2. Now go to this page and do the same thing:
    WhyScriptAI.htm
You still see some gobbletygook, but not as much of it, right? That page (along with the others it links to) was written in nothing more complicated than Windows Notepad. (Like Mac SimpleText, if MacOS still has that.) It's certainly not a complex page. It's XHTML compliant. There are no tables, no slices. It references a separate CSS file for the styling, and uses a "div" tag to separate the "menu sidebar". But it's way more involved than would be necessary for the simple things you have so far described wanting to do, yet it and its CSS file were written in an ordinary text editor.
    Now for exercise two:
    1. Launch Illustrator and open a new blank document. Don't draw anything; just open a blank document.
    2. Save For Web. (Yes, we're going to save a blank document.) In the Save As dialog, select HTML only. Save the file wherever you want on your computer.
    3. Open the file with your web browser. Use the View Source command (or just open the file with any text editor), and you'll see something like this:
The background of the image above is the "blank" web page exported from AI, as it appears in a browser. The NotePad window is all of its source code. Much simpler, huh?
Note that the page displays a missing image. That's a default slice that AI inserts, even if there's no content in the document. Its code is highlighted in my screenshot. It's the only thing between the body tags of the source code.
    4. Delete the highlighted text and replace it with "I wrote this." Save the file.
    5. Go back to your web browser and refresh the view:
So now let's go back to your original problem of trying to put a simple mailto link on an HTML page that was exported from Illustrator. To do that, all you need to know is the HTML syntax for a mailto tag. Instead of typing "I wrote this", type a tag like this:
See how simple that is? No mucking around with slices in AI; no trying to find the point-and-click commands for a mailto link in Dreamweaver's interface. But moreover, you now understand what's actually going on, regardless of
whatever WYSIWYG web editing program you end up using (if any).
    > Also I have got CS3 but would I be better off using DW in CS4 do you think?
Doesn't matter. You don't need CS4 to learn your way around Dreamweaver, and you don't need Dreamweaver at all to build fairly simple web pages. You could still use PageMill 1.0 if you had a machine to run it on. HTML is not rocket science. It's just a tags-based markup language. Honestly, if you just learn the basics, you'll probably enjoy it. Concentrate on that and then you'll know when and if you need to use a program like Dreamweaver, and why. Use whatever version of Dreamweaver (or whatever) you want when the design of your pages becomes complex enough that you feel you have a need for it.

  • Problem reading disk image

I just purchased and downloaded a full upgrade version of Lightroom 5 (not creative cloud). I successfully completed the purchase and download but my Mac Pro cannot open the package (i just downloaded a different Adobe product successfully yesteday).
I have lots of disk space. I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 8 GBs of RAM. Any ideas why this won't open?
I have a copy of Lightroom 3 and 4 on the machine already, running just fine.
I'm going to try redownloading this package but wondering if others are having this problem.

It appears that I needed to download it again. It ran this time. Thanks for the idea, but no, for some reason it must have been corrupted.

  • Where can I download the full disk image to re-install OS 10.5.8?

    Hi there!
I brought mi MAC Book in 2008, and now mi OS is working bad. I need to format and re-install te OS. I have the backups in Time Machine in a external HD, but mi DVD room is not working to read a disk from boot, and any DVD actually... (what a surprise!).
How can I download version 1.5.8 full to boot from an external HD? or simple OSX 1.5 and then I can upgrade.
I have all the linceses to verify I 'm the costumer.
    Thanks!

If you're going to boot the Mac with the working optical drive in FireWire Target Disk mode, it doesn't matter when it was made, as you're not actually booting it from the DVD.
If you're going to boot the Mac you want to install the OS onto in FireWire Target Disk mode, the disk must be a retail one(unless both Macs are the same model) and it must be newer than both Macs.

  • Method to repair disk without using Panther CDs?

I'm concerned I may need to repair my drive but as I'm sure most of you know, I would need to start up using the OS X Panther install CDs. I can't; I moved recently and forgot them.
Is there a method, such as if I started up in single user mode, to run a disk utility program?
My computer seems a little less efficient lately; Photoshop won't run as smoothly (although it's not a huge difference, it's noticeable) and videos can be jittery/drop frames. Even if use the renice command and give VLC or the DVD Player a fair amount of CPU priority. It's not all the time, but it can happen when it just shouldn't.
Note: using the fsck command (i can't remember the exact options i used with it, someone suggested it to me in another forum) I checked the drive and it said it appeared to be OKAY.

You can repair the drive by booting into single-user mode and using fsck. The following explains the procedures:

  • How do I create a start-up disk image without restarting from the Install DVD?

(I know this is not MacBook Pro question per se, but I can't find a software discussion this applies to.)
    Situation:
My MBP is running, but it's acting up and Onyx tells me that the start-up volume needs repair and directs me to use Disk Utility.
But to repair a volume using Disk Utility, you must restart from the original Install DVD (or some other start-up volume).
But although the MBP will read my old Leopard Install DVD and the Install DVD that came with my MBP, it refuses to restart from either of them. (Trying to do so gets as far as the Apple logo on a gray screen and then hangs there; all disk activity ceases.)
    Question:
How can I (is it even possible to) create a start-up volume on my external FW drive without starting my MBP from a DVD?
In other words, is there a way to either:
    a) create a disk image from the Install DVD on my external FW drive and then designate that disk image as my start-up drive?
    OR
    b) create a disk image on my MBP's internal drive that I can then use to run a System Install on my external drive?
(BTW, I know I can create disk images using Disk Utility, but it offers many options for type, compression, etc., that are beyond me. )
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs.
Restart your Mac holding down the Command-R to enter the Recovery HD.
From there you can use Disk Utilty.

  • Installing OS from a disk image

    Hi,
I have quite a few systems that I need to rebuild. I've burned disk images of all the apps we need, onto a FW800 drive which has really sped things up. One thing I can't figure out though, is how to install the OS from a disk image. Each of these systems are getting a fresh hard drive with no OS installed. Booting off the install DVD works fine with fresh drives, but how does one boot into a FW800 drive with a disk image of the install DVD?
I thought cmd-opt-shift-delete was the key stroke for this, but it doesn't work for these systems, can anyone help out?
These systems are a combination of Leopard and Snow Leopard and are all Mac Pro's from the 2006-2007 to the early 2009 models.
    Thanks
    Stuart

Cool, thanks, I was kind of thinking along those lines, but couldn't quite put my finger on it/figure it out, that makes sense, appreciate it.
    Thanks again for quick reply,
    Stuart
